What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的)art? Can you understand it? Does it
look like anything?
Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or
sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn't want their art to be realistic(现实的). They
were more interested in basic shapes and colours.
Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles.
Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink
colours (his "rose period"). Many of his other paintings are called "cubist (立体派的)"
because they are made of painted squares.
After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and
things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn't
understand it.
Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His
paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists like the surrealists (超现实主义画家),were interested in subconsciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and
Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always
clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams.
There are still many abstract artists around the world. That's the way many artists prefer. They
want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it.
(1)Which would be most like abstract art?
A. A painting of a house.
B. A sculpture of a car.
C. A drawing of two people in a coffee house.
D. A red and blue painting, with no clear subject.
(2)What happened to Picasso's work after a long time?
A. It became more abstract.
B. It became less strange.
C. He went from using red colours to using blue colours.
D. He only painted with coloured squares.
(3)How did Kandinsky express feelings?
A. By using strong colours. B. By painting realistic people.
C. By painting with a lot of symbols. D. By painting in red and pink colours.
(4)Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Picasso painted in many different styles.
B. Dali was interested in dreams.
C. Abstract artists feel each work of art only has one meaning.
D. Magritte's art was full of symbols. 【答案】 (1)D
(2)A
(3)A
(4)C
【解析】【分析】本文介绍了抽象派艺术及其代表人物毕加索。
(1)推理题。根据毕加索是抽象艺术的代表人物Sometimes he used a lot of blue
colours (his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink colours 有时他使用很多蓝色,后来,他使用了更多的红色和粉色,可知一幅红色和蓝色的画,没有清晰的主题最像抽象艺术 , 故选D。
(2)细节题。根据 After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more
abstract 可知很久以后毕加索的作品变得更加抽象 , 故选A。
(3)细节题。根据 His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings 可知康定斯通过使用强烈的颜色基表达感情的 , 故选A。
(4)细节题。根据 The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali,
another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams. 他们工作的意义或主题并不总是清楚的。另一位超现实主义艺术家达利画的画看起来像梦 可知抽象艺术家觉得每件艺术品只有一种意义是错误的 , 故选C。

As far back as he could remember, Larry had wanted to go to Hollywood and become a film star.
The young man's hopes for success were broken again and again. However, Hollywood was just
everything to him. When he first came to California? Larry had decided never to give up and
return home without success. Therefore, he kept on trying. "Some day," he told himself, "my big
chance would come."
Larry found a job—parking cars at one of Hollywood's big restaurants. His pay was low, but
since the guests were kind enough to give him more money, he managed to make a living. One
day he recognized an important film director driving into the parking lot and getting out of his car.
Larry had recently heard that the man was ready to make a new picture.
Larry got into the car and prepared to drive it on into the lot and park it. Then he stopped,
jumped out, and ran over to the director. "Excuse me, sir, but I think it's only fair to tell you that
it's now or never if you want me in your next picture. A lot of big companies are after me."
Instead of pushing away the boy, the director laughed, then wrote something on a card and
handed it to the young man. "Come and see me tomorrow."
Larry got a small part in the director's next film. He was on his way!
(1)It's clear that Larry's job—parking cars ________.
A. helped him make a lot of money
B. brought him the hope to be a film star
C. made him fail again and again in getting into Hollywood

The little bird was so unhappy about being kept in the cage that she stopped singing one day.
The emperor was very angry. He ordered the scientists in his palace to make a robot bird for him.
The bird could sing very beautifully too. The emperor was pleased.

Hobbies let you explore interests outside of your line of work. They let you be creative and try
all kinds of new things. Picking a different one can get your creative juices flowing again.
Look at what interests you.
Check what you love doing in your spare time. Do you enjoy reading books? Maybe you want
to try your hand at writing your own. Do you like a hot coffee at the end of the day? Maybe your
hobby could be trying to make it at home. Turn what you already love into a hobby.
Think about what you value most
Do you value wisdom or courage? Do you admire artists? Let such question guide you when
choosing a hobby.
For example, maybe you could volunteer at a library as a hobby because you value education
or maybe you could try painting because you admire people who can express themselves with art.

As we all know, English is an important subject in middle school. Everyone knows that they
must learn English well, but some people don't know how to learn it well. Here are some
suggestions which may help you with your English.
The biggest problem is people's own fear. They worry that they won't say things correctly or
that they will look foolish so that they don't speak English at all. Don't be afraid of being laughed
at. Only if we aren't afraid of making mistakes can we learn English well.
The fastest way to learn something is to do it again and again until you get it right. Learning
English needs practice. Don't let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
The best way to learn English is to have a good environment. Take notes in English, put English

Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should
know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying
anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you're travelling in
Thailand, never touch people's heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new
people, they like giving business cards-but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in
your pocket.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in
many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually
stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give

Great changes have taken place in family life because of science and industry(工业). In the
past, when most Americans lived on farms, the typical family had many children. In a farm family,
parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Usually, uncles and aunts lived nearby.
But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became
smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off the land and move
again whenever necessary. And large families cannot move from place to place as smaller families.
So, at present people tend to have smaller families.
In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more
often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and
