Unit 16 StoriesⅠ.阅读理解AWhen I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me. I've lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shootups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who were barred in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn't let that happen.Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.Mr. Clark was selected as Disney's 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angeles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. Clark said,“You're all going.〞On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn't want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestselling book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages. It was the most amazing experience of my life. It's now my dream to one day start a group of women's clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.文章大意:本文是一篇写人记叙文。

I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city. So I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After 10 years of living in one, I can‘t imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can‘t get around without one, because there isn‘t any kind of public transport. Big cities general ly have heavy traffic and expensive parking. But there you have a choice of taking public transport which is cheaper than driving. So if you don‘t have a car, you‘d better live in a city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts and other wonderful shows. However these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course safety should be considered. And that‘s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than do feel safe but dull.31-5 ACACB 6-10 BBABA 11-15 BACAA 16-20 BCBCCText 1M: My classmates and I help each other solve homework problems online.W: It sounds like you‘re using th e Internet in a useful way.Text 2M: I think everyone can enjoy a talent show. I was expecting excitement and rapids and beautiful landscapes and all we‘re getting is a flat river surrounded by dull little trees –and the mountains are miles away! It‘s not as if we had to come here. There were lots of other places we could have gone. M: Come on. It‘s not so bad. If I were you, I‘d take some steps right away, just like I‘ve done, and then they won‘t bite you. And if you‘d just stop complaining for a while, perhaps we‘d start enjoying ourselves a bit. Just thin k about how quiet and peaceful it all is and what a lovely rest from city life!W: Rest! If we‘d stayed at home, I‘d be resting in front of the TV right now, instead of paddling up this miserable river.M: OK!Text 10The Inuit, or Eskimo people, live in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Siberia, Greenland and Canada. Altogether there are more than 100,000 Inuit. Most of them live near the sea, hunting for living.European whalers, who arrived in the latter part of the nineteenth century, had a strong impact on the Inuit. They brought their religion but they also brought their infectious diseases, to which the Inuit had no immunity and which, as a direct consequence of this, reduced the population in some areas. In the past, the Inuit had several different forms of traditional housing. In Greenland, they often lived in permanent stone houses. Along the shores of Siberia, they lived in villages made up of wooden houses. Summer housing for many Inuit was a skin tent, while in the winter houses made of snow, which were called igloo, were common. Wherever they live today, the Inuit are involved in the modern world. They have wholeheartedly adopted much of its technology, as well as its clothing, and the design of their living spaces. Their economic, religious and governmental institutions have also been heavily influenced by the cultures of their near neighbours in Europe and America.41-5 BABCC 6-10 BCACB 11-15 AACBB 16-20 CAACBText 1W: Let‘s meet after school tomorrow.
