Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes.To some degree our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some degree something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(随机地)from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be pletely different. If on the other hand we take two identical (完全相同的)twins they will very likely be as intelligent as each other.Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees ofintelligence.56.Which of these sentences best describes the writer’s point in Para.1?A.To some degree, intelligence is given at birth.B.Intelligence is developed by the environment.C.Some people are born clever and others born stupid.D.Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.57.It is suggested in this passage that_______.A.unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligenceB.close relations usually have similar intelligenceC.the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligenceD.people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence58.In Para.1, the word "surroundings" means_______.A.intelligence B.lifeC.environments D.housing59.The best title for this article would be_______.A.On IntelligenceB.What Intelligence MeansC.We are Born with IntelligenceD.Environment Plays a Part in Developing IntelligenceBReading can provide lots of fun for children and teens during summer vacation. Are you seeking happiness today? Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness. Some have put their hearts and efforts into their work.Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol.Meanwhile, untold numbers have looked for it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic(异国的)vacation homes and other popular “toys”.Most of their efforts have a root in one mon fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness.Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the journey of finding it.I have heard many people say that, “I’ll be happy when I get my new promotion.”Or “I’ll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.”It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a “response”to having, being or doing something. In life, we all experience stimulus(激励)and response.Today, some people think that an expensive car is a stimulus, and happiness is a response; a great paying job is a stimulus, and happiness is a response; a loving relationship is a stimulus, and happiness is a response. This belief leaves us the thinking and feeling: I’ll be happy when …It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true.I believe that happiness is a stimulus and a response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationships. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health.Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.Happiness is a conscious choice we make every day of our lives. For unknown reason to me, many choose to be painful, unsuccessful and angry most of thetime.Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want--we usually get things we want AFTER we choose to be happy.63.From the second paragraph, we know too many people ______________.A.are not happy when they work hardB.are not happy when they drink or take drugsC.are happy when they possess their own expensive carsD.all desire exotic vacation homes64.Generally speaking, most people feel happy because ______________.A.they think happiness is rooted in their deep heartsB.they get what they want to haveC.they get a great paying jobD.they get an expensive car65.Which of the following is right according to the author?A.If you want to get what you want, you first choose to be happy.B.We should try to get more and then we’ll be happy.C.Most people today are happy.D.Work is a necessary part in our daily life66.From the viewpoint of the author, happiness is _______________.A.based on our needs B.unconditionalC.out of reach D.limitedDA metaphor is a poetic device that deals with parison. It pares similar qualities of two dissimilar objects. With a simple metaphor, one object bees the other: Love is a rose. Although this does not sound like a particularly rich image, a metaphor can municate so much about a particular image that poets use them more than any other type of figurative language. The reason for this is that poets pose their poetry to express what they are experiencing emotionally at that moment. Consequently, what the poet imagines love to be may or may not be our understanding of love. Therefore, the poet’s job is to enable us to experience it, to feel it the same way as the poet does.Let’s analyze this rem arkably simple metaphor concerning love and the rose to see what it offers. Because the poet uses a parison with a rose, first we must examine the characteristics of that flower. A rose is impressive in its beauty, its petals(花瓣)are nicely soft, and its sm ell is pleasing. It’s possible to say that a rose is actually a feast to the senses of sight, touch, and smell. The rose’s appearance seems to border on perfection, each petal seemingly equal in form. Isn’t this the way one’s love should be?A loved one sho uld be a delight to one’s senses and seem perfect. However, there is another dimension added to the parison by using a rose. Roses have thorns. The poet wants to convey the idea that roses can be tricky. So can love, the metaphor tells us. When one reaches out with absolute trust to touch the object of his or her affection, ouch, a thorn can cause great harm! “Be careful,” the metaphor warns, “Love is a feast to the senses, but it can overwhelm us, and it can also hurt usand cause acute suffering.” This i s the poet’s understanding of love—an admonition (劝诫). What is the point?Just this: It took almost 14 sentences to clarify what a simple metaphor municates in only four words! That is the artistry and the joy of the simple metaphor.67. According to the passage, a metaphor is a ________.A. description of two similar objects in a poetic wayB. literary device specially employed in poetry writingC. contrast between two different things to create a vivid imageD. parison between two different objects with similar features68. As is meant by the author, thorns of a rose ________.A. add a new element to the image of loveB. protect the rose from harmC. symbolize reduced loveD. cause acute suffering69. It can be inferred from the passage that a metaphor is _______.A. difficult to understandB. rich in meaningC. simple to useD. perfect in form70. The main idea of this passage is that ________.A. love is a rose in metaphorB. a rose is a good image in poetryC. a metaphor is a great poetic deviceD. a poet should be careful to use a metaphorE根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
