Abstract“龙” is the counterpart of the word “dragon” in Chinese. But most of the time, they are not quite the same. They even have opposite meanings. Therefore, this essay will analyze the similarities and differences between “龙” and “dragon” in many aspects.Key words:“龙”“dragon” similarities differences摘要“龙”和“dragon”是英汉中相对应的两个词，但是很多时候它们是不完全相同的，甚至是意义相反的。
因此，本文将从多个方面分析“龙”和“dragon”的相似点与差别。
关键词：“龙”“dragon”相似差别“龙”与“dragon”的对比研究1 绪论中华儿女一直有一个响当当的称号，那就是龙的传人，龙在中华文化中的地位和意义可见一斑，“龙”一词在汉语中应用广泛，意义繁多。
在英语中，与“龙”一词相对应的是“dragon”。
在翻译的时候，我们经常会理所当然地把“龙”译为“dragon”或者把“dragon”译成“龙”，这在很多时候是不准确甚至是错误的，因为二者之间既有相似点也存在很大的差别。

2.1 起源2.1.1 中国龙的起源据文献记载，龙在中国古代确实存在，但那时的龙是可供人食用或者饲养的动物，因此其与我们今天所说的龙是不同的。
提到汉语中的龙，首先要了解一个概念，那就是图腾崇拜。
所谓图腾，就是原始时代人们把某种动物、植物或非生物等当做自己的亲属、祖先或保护神，相信它们拥有超自然的力量，可以保护和庇佑自己。
而龙就是中国古老图腾崇拜的产物之一。
据记载，龙起源于新石器时代早期，距今至少8000年。
先民们无法用科学解释一些自然现象，如地震等，因此他们认为存在一种控制一切的“神力”，龙就是被先民赋予这种“神力”的事物之一。
在中国，关于龙的记载不胜枚举。
最早记录龙的书是《易经》，有：“飞龙在天”“龙跃于渊”的记载。
中国最早的诗歌总集《诗经》中也有“龙旗十乘”、“龙旗阳阳”的记载。
我们熟知的《荀子. 劝学篇》记载着“积水成渊，蛟龙生焉。
”中国民间和典籍中关于龙的传说也数不胜数。
叶公好龙的故事家喻户晓，在《西游记》中，龙王分别是东海敖广、西海敖钦、南海敖闰、北海敖顺，称为四海龙王。
《太平广记》搜集的龙的神话小说就有八十一则，可以说，龙在中国无处不在。
2.1.2 英语中“dragon”的起源关于西方龙的起源，众说纷纭，因为西方龙的形象在北欧、希腊、巴比伦、中古欧洲的神话传说中都出现过。
其起源的时间也没有明确的记载。
但不可否认的是，西方的龙与汉语中的龙都是神话传说中的形象，都是人类祖先丰富的想象力的产物。
西方关于“dragon”的记载也是相当多的。
《圣经》是西方的典籍的代表，仅《圣经》就提到“dragon”二十几次，其中《圣经.新新约》中的《启示录》说：“一条七头红龙，每个头上都戴着王冠，长长的尾巴把天上三分之一的星星打落在地。
红龙守在孕妇旁边，打算吃掉她即将生出的婴儿。
一个小男孩生下来后，立即被接到上帝宝座中，因为他是未来管辖万国的首领。
他的母亲逃到旷野，在上帝给她准备好的地方住了一千二百六十天。
”于是有了后来的天使米迦勒屠龙的故事。
其他关于龙的传说还有很多，比如守护金苹果的龙、圣乔治与龙的故事等等，这里不做详细的阐释。
2.2 外形特征和特异功能汉语中的“龙”与英语中的“dragon”的形象在外形特征和具备的特异功能方面既有相似，又有差别。
2.2.1 外形特征2很多人说中国龙的原型是蛇，但是古籍对龙的形象的描述多不一。
《论衡》将龙描述为“龙之像，马首蛇尾”。
有的则说“身披鳞甲，头有须角，五爪”。
我认为不管将龙的原型定位为马还是蛇或者其他动物，都有以偏概全的嫌疑。
龙应该是综合了多种动物的特征的新的形象，它的龙须似虎须，尾巴如鬣，身长似蛇，像鱼一样有鳞，又像鹿一样有角，它的龙爪又似鹰爪。
西方的龙身躯强壮，拥有又长又粗的颈。
与中国龙一样，它的头上也有角，但它有中国龙没有的尖锐的牙齿。
它的特色之一就是长长的尾巴。
他拥有像蝙蝠翅膀一样的巨型翼，但在中国，并不是所有的龙都有翼。
和中国龙一样，它的全身也覆盖着鳞片，保护着身体。
它的眼睛有四层眼睑，可保护眼睛免受伤害，它的尖锐的牙齿一般会向内弯曲，以便撕开猎物。
3中国龙4西方龙2.2.2 特异功能曹操在在《煮酒论英雄》中道：“龙能大能小，能升能隐；大则兴云吐雾，小则隐介藏形；升则飞腾于宇宙之间，隐则潜伏于波涛之内。
方今春深，龙乘时变化，犹人得志而纵横四海。
龙之为物，可比世之英雄。
”由此可见，龙在中国文化中是被奉为英雄的，它能在空中、地上走、水里游，能腾云驾雾、呼风唤雨，是神通广大的神物。
在中国的神话传说中，龙是海的主人，因此在我们的印象中，龙最常见的本领是呼风唤雨，拥有治水的本领。
唐玄宗时，曾诎祠龙池，设坛官致祭，以祭雨师之仪祭龙王，以求龙王保佑天下风调雨顺，五谷丰登。
西方的《动物寓言集》首次对龙进行了描述：“它的牙齿和尾巴都很有力量，它通过吹气而不是拍打来杀死敌人，它的尾巴卷起来可以杀死一切东西。
”可见5西方龙力量之强大。
除此之外，西方龙给人留下最深刻印象的是它可以口中吐火。
中世纪的圣徒传中记述的龙便是可以喷火和散发毒气（称为“吐息”）的恶魔。
3 “龙”与“dragon”的象征意义比较象征意义是二者差别最大的方面。
3.1 “龙”的象征意义从中国龙的起源我们可以看出，龙是受人膜拜与尊敬的神物，是神圣的，因此中国龙的象征意义是积极的。
3.1.1 “龙”象征权力与地位中国历史上与皇帝与皇权相关的事物很多用龙来命名。
“真龙天子”的是历代君王的尊贵称号，皇帝的龙袍上一般都绣着金色的龙，象征皇权的至高无上和不可侵犯。
皇帝坐的椅子被称为龙椅，皇帝发威叫龙威大怒，皇帝的身体是龙体，皇帝的面貌是龙颜。
炎帝、黄帝在《史记》中也被记载为“龙颜有圣德”、“感神龙而生”。
此外，皇宫的建筑一般都雕刻有龙。
可见龙在中国一直是无上权力和尊贵地位的象征。
3.1.2 “龙”象征吉祥和繁荣中国很多关于龙的成语都与龙的吉祥意义有关。
“龙凤呈祥”很好地诠释了龙对祥瑞的象征意义。
“鲤鱼跃龙门”也表达了人们对繁荣富足生活的渴望。
“龙腾盛世”更是描述了一个繁华的太平盛世。
很多事物以龙命名也是为了取其吉祥之意，像龙舟、龙川、龙山等。
可见，龙承载了中国人对吉祥和繁荣的追求和向往。
3.1.3 “龙”象征聪慧的人才《三国演义》中，诸葛亮被称为“卧龙先生”，而诸葛亮是上晓天文，下知地理的人才，因此“卧龙”意为隐居的人才。
“卧虎藏龙”用来形容某地或某领域隐没着很多人才。
“望子成龙”则表达了父母希望儿女成为人才的美好愿望。
此外“乘龙快婿”、“龙驹凤雏”中的“龙”也是聪慧人才的象征。
3.1.4 象征充沛的活力与高昂的精神“生龙活虎”、“龙腾虎跃”表明龙是生机与活力的代名词。
《尚书中候.握河纪》是这样记载的：“伏羲氏有天下，龙马负图出于河。
”龙马是指古代传说中形状像龙的骏马，因此“龙马精神”一词就用来比喻人精神旺盛高昂。
3.2 西方“dragon”的象征意义与中国龙相反，西方龙的象征意义是消极阴暗的。
3.2.1 象征邪恶与残暴《圣经》将恶魔撒旦命名为“the Old Dragon”，可见龙是邪恶的化身。
在西方的神话传说中，“dragon”是人们的宿敌，他要么以年轻的姑娘为食，要么兴风作浪或吐火来毁坏人类建筑或伤害杀死人类，而只有最勇敢的骑士才能杀死恶龙，解救百姓于水火之中。
一些与“dragon”相关的短语，像“chase the dragon”（服用鸦片）、dragonish（凶暴的，严厉的），都很好地体现了“dragon”的邪恶与残暴。
3.2.2 象征战争在希腊神话中，国王播种的龙齿后来成长为武士，于是这些武士互相残杀，于是有了“sow dragon’s teeth”（播下毁灭的种子）的说法，因此“dragon”预示着战争与毁灭的降临。
此外，龙在西方经常被用作战争的旗帜标志，西方人经常把“dragon”雕刻在兵器上或者画在战旗上。
因此我们说“dragon”在西方是战争的象征。
63.2.3 象征丑陋凶狠的女人《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》中对“dragon”一词有这样一种解释：“a woman who behaves in an aggressive and frightening way 悍妇，母夜叉。
”这时“dragon”与“tigress”是同样的意思。
因此，“dragon”也象征凶狠的女人。
4 结论“龙”与“dragon”之间既有相似点又存在差异，特别是二者的象征意义存在极大差异，“龙”象征着正义，而“dragon”却是邪恶的化身。
因此在日常英语学习和研究中，尤其是在翻译工作中，要特别注意二者的差别，随意地将“龙”译作“dragon”或者将“dragon”译作“龙”是不妥的。
