Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Archaeology, like many academic words, comes from Greek and means, more or less, “th e study of old things”. So, it is really a part of the study of history. However, most historians use paper evidence, such as letters, paintings and photographs, but archaeologists (考古学家) learn from the objects left behind by the humans of long ago. Normally, these are the hard m aterials that don't break down or disappear very quickly—things like human bones and objects made from stone and metal. It is very unusual to find anything more than the hard evidence of history--normally, the b acteria (细菌) in the air eat away at soft materials, like bodies, clothes and things made of wo od. Occasionally, things are different. In 1984, two men made an amazing discovery while working in a bog called Lindow Mos s, in the north of England. A bog is a very wet area of earth, with a lot of plants growing in it. It can be like a very big and very thick vegetable soup—walk in the wrong place and you can sink and disappear forever. The men were working when one of them saw something stic king out—a human foot! Naturally, the men called the police, who then found the rest of the bo dy. Was it a case of murder? Possibly--but it was a death nearly two thousand years old. The two men had found a body from the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Despite being so old, this body had skin, muscles, hair and internal organs—the scientists who examined him we re able to look inside the man's stomach and find the food that he had eaten for his last meal! Why was this man so well preserved? (76) It was because he was in a very watery enviro nment, safe from the bacteria that need oxygen to live. Also, the water in the bog was very ac idic. The acid preserved the man's skin in the way that animal skin is preserved for leather coa ts and shoes. How did he die? Understandably, archaeologists and other scientists wanted to know more about the person that they called,“Lindow Man”. (77) His hands and fingernails suggested that he hadn't done heavy manual work in his life—he could have been a rich man. They found tha t he hadn't died by accident. The archaeologists believe that he was sacrificed to three different gods.1. Which language does the word “archaeology”come f rom?A. French.B. Greek.C. Roman.D. German.【答案】B。

When he helped his parents at age 5, his right hand accidentally was caught in a corn harvester, losing parts of two fingers or three fingers left. However, his disabled hand did not keep him from doing what other boys of his age were doing, like playing baseball. While working as a coal miner in his twenties, Mordecai joined a baseball team made up of fellow coal miners. In 1898, th e team’s pitcher injured his arm. The manager ordered Mordecai to act as the pitcher. Mordecai shook his head and held up his right hand as a reminder. But themanager didn’t care. “Since you have the best arm on the team, you will have to pitch.” Finally, his team won the game nine to three. In 1903, Mordecai Brown broke into Major League Baseball when he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Only a year later, the management of the Cardinals decided that Mordecai’s disability would keep him from ever becoming a star pitcher. They traded him to the Chicago Cubs.On a sunny October afternoon in 1908, thousands of people went to New York City’s Polo Grounds to see the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs battle. Mordecai was not the pitcher at first. He watched as the chosen starter faced the batters (击球员) for the New York Giants. Soon, the batters were filling the bases. Then, Mordecai was asked to be the pitcher. It seemed that the unfavorable condition didn’t affect him. He held the ball with his three fingers firmly and let it go. Strike one! Strike two! Strike three! The batter was out. And soon, the game was over. The Cubs beat the Giants, four to two.Mordecai went on to pitch, winning one game after another, and retired after the 1916 season. In 1949, Mordecai Peter entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in New York, earning him a well-deserved place in baseball history.4. What can we learn about Mordecai from Paragraph1?A. The Most Pitiful Baseball Pitcher【答案】4-7 CABCCOne in five children starting primary school in the UK are overweight. By the time they leave school, that figure will rise to one in three. The chance of them being overweight in adulthood, which brings range of associated health risks, is high, at 50-75%.The root cause of diet-related fatness is no secret: an energy imbalance between the quantity of food being consumed and the level of physical activity being conducted. Addressing this imbalance needs to be, in part, a review of our diet. More fresh ingredients(原料) especially fruit and vegetables, less processed foods and fewer additives(添加剂) are all important factors in building a balanced diet. The Department of Health has recognized that a collective approach, rather than just individual behavior change, is a successful way of achieving this. Universal adjustments like a blanket decrease in sugar content influence the way we eat through the choices available to us.Applying this approach to school kitchens makes sense. They have an important role to play in maintaining healthy diets. Offering a school menu packed with fresh ingredients and without artificial additives makes a direct and effective impact on what children eat at school. It's an area the Soil Association consistently works to handle through its Food for Life program -working with schools to transform food culture, improve food education and encourage lasting changes to the way schools think about food. It works. In Food for Life schools, pupils are a third less likely to eat no fruit or vegetables than those in comparison schools. One way for schools to get involved is a Food for Life Served Here award which means at least 75% of dishes are prepared on site using fresh ingredients. It encourages local seasonal produce and, at silver or gold level, requires a commitment to environmentally friendly produce. At its heart, the award is designed to support health and enhance food understanding.Over 50% of English primary schools have such an award, already, -serving around 1.7 million meals each day to over10.000 schools and it's a figure we'll see grow.8. What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Tackling.B. Ignoring.C. Maintaining.D. Postponing.9. Which approach will work for students to build balanced diet?A. Stopping them eating alone in schools.B. Getting them aware of the harm of fatness.C. Ensuring healthy recipes on school menus.D. Increasing the availability and flavor of food.10. What can we say about the Food for Life program?A. It’s a heavy load on schools.B. It’s complicated to operate.C It’s a temporary project.D. It’s fruitful attempt.11. Which type of food may the Food for Life Served Here award promote?A. Sugary snacks.B. First-class sausages.C. High-quality imported beef.D. Freshly picked organic beans.【答案】8-11 ACDDDRoughly the size of a soda can, sitting on a bookshelf, a ly harmless device(设备) may be turning friends away from your home. The elephant in your living room is your Internet-connected camera, a device people are increasingly using for peace of mind in their homes. But few stop to think about the effect these devices may have on house guests. Should you tell your friends, for instance, that they’re being recorded while you all watch the big game together?“It’s certainly new territory, especially as home security cameras become easier to fix,” says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America’s distinguished manners advisors.“I think it will be very interesting to see what manners appear in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it’s not a security issue.”Post wants to make clear that she’s not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preference. When it comes to security came ras, Post says it’s a host’s responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home. If the host casually acknowledges that there is a camera in theroom by telling a story about it, that may be enough to provide an opening for a guest to say if they are uncomfortable. However, if a contractor(合约工) is working in your home, you don’t need to tell them that there are cameras watching. Then again, the camera can also work in contractors’ favor. “If anything does go wrong while they’re in the house, they don’t want to be blamed for it,” she says. “In fact, the camera could be the thing that proves that they didn’t steal the $20, or knock the vase off the table.”12. The visitors are concerned that the security camera may ____A. threaten their health.B. spoil their peace of mind.C. disturb their privacy.D. affect their preference.13. What is a host’s responsibility concerning the security camera?A. Indicating its position.B. Making their guests feel at ease.C. Turning it oil in time.D. Having a casual talk with guests.14. How can the home security camera benefit contractors working in your home?A. It can prevent the accidents happening.B. It can prove their innocence.C. It can record their working progress.D. It can make their work more enjoyable.15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the security camera?A. Negative.B. Pessimistic.C. Favorable.D. Objective.【答案】12-15 CBBD第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

For each question, there are four choices marked A, B, C arid D. You should decide on the best choice, then mark the corresponding letter on the answer sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 46-50 are based on the following passage.Mark Twain pointed out that if work were so pleasant, therich would keep it for themselves. But however much people may think they dislike work, everyone has a deep psychological need for it. Everyone wants to be valued, and wages and salaries are the visible proof that we matter. Not all kinds of work qualify, however. No matter how worthwhile or demanding they might be, bringing up children, housework and voluntary employment are not usually seen as proper jobs. The only proper job is one that provides paid employment. Being paid for a job in our society means higher personal status.Of course we would also prefer work to be useful, pleasant and interesting—and also well paid. But you don’t really have to enjoy your work to get pleasure from it. The fact that we have to overcome some difficulties that we have to deal with doing routine tasks, in some way gives us pleasure. For example, having to be in a particular place at a particular time, working as part of a team towards a common goal, gives us a sense of purpose. The modern workplace also provides somewhere where people can assert their identity or create a new one.Without work many people become untidy and lazy, andfind they are unable to enjoy the leisure time which is available to them. When some people retire from work, they lose their sense of value and purpose. For most of their lives, their personality, self-image and status have been defined by work; without it they lose their appetite for life.People who suddenly lose their jobs can find the situation particularly difficult. At a single stoke they lose all the advantages and status that a paid job provides. In a culture dominated by work, they are seen by those with jobs as incompetent or lazy. It is little wonder that stress and illness occur more frequently among the unemployed.Employment is now changing, however. Information technology has already significantly altered the world of work. For many, the idea of a job for life is no longer realistic. Many people fear they will lose their jobs, and some are being persuaded to accept the possibility of part-time work. Even the workplace itself may become a thing of the past with more and more people working at home. This means that we may no longer be able to depend on work to define ourselves and our position in society, and that we will have to find new ways to give our lives a sense of value and purpose. Questions:46. Mark Twain pointed out that______.A. the rich should work moreB. work is not such a pleasurable thingC. the rich should keep all the work for themselvesD. work makes people rich47. People have a deep psychological need for work because______.A. they want to be richB. they like being told what to doC. everyone needs moneyD. they want to be valued and work proves this value48. People don’t have to enjoy their work to get pleasure from it because______.A. the salary makes them happyB. they get used to the routineC. coping with problems can be satisfyingD. they know their work is still useful49. People who have no work often______.A. enjoy their leisure timeB. develop a better self-imageC. have difficulty coping with the changeD. take an interest in new activities50. The arrival of information technology has______.A. enhanced people’s interest in workB. made work more stressfulC. made the workplace unnecessaryD. made people change their attitude to workSection B (10 marks)In this section, there is one passage followed by a summary. Read the passage carefully and complete the summery below by choosing a maximum of three words from the passage to fill in each of the blanks 51-55. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.Companies say that in many cases, the benefits of foreign-language knowledge can lie outside the specific realm of business. That’s one reason why the programs are optional. Mayer says that the benefits are more to help each employee adjust to his or her new surroundings and to promote the company’s policy of being a good neighbor and becoming integrated into local communities than to help the executive conduct actual business. At IBM, company-subsidized foreign-language training is provided on a case-by-case basis, says Mia Vanstraelen, director of human resources for learning in Europe, theMiddle East and Africa. If employees need foreign-language skills to do their job properly—for example, an expatriate manager who functions as the point person between an overseas operation and headquarters or a sales employee who deals with clients on the ground overseas—the company will provide financial support. In addition, company support is often available for employees seeking business-related skills to further their own careers within the company.A less-than-aggressive attitude toward foreign-language acquisition at the corporate level is typical, some experts say, and the reasons range from high cost to a lack of necessity. English, the language of business, the language of technology, the language of Hollywood, is the language to know in global business even for traditionally non-English-speaking countries. While Americans have to decide which second language might be most useful for their business careers according to their areas of interest, potential business professionals in other countries whose native language is not English have a clear answer to that question. And as more students worldwide learn to conduct business in English, itsposition as the language of commerce solidifies.Even multinationals that are headquartered in other countries are using English as the language of business, Van Someren says. He cites Sony’s Berlin headquarters as an example. In that office, which has about 400 employees, there are 45 different nationalities and almost as many l anguages, he says. “So the cost and effort associated with trying to teach everyone German when a lot of them will be moving on to other assignments in a matter of months probably doesn’t make a lot of sense,” he says. Language acquisition can be a slow process, and companies that need someone who speaks a foreign language can’t wait years for the right employee to gain the skills. When knowledge of a foreign language is what is specifically required, that’s the skill set human resources looks for. Lieberthal says that in many ways, training high-level employees in a foreign language such as Chinese simply doesn’t make good business sense. “It’s a large investment with high front-end costs.” Top executives could harm their careers by taking time off to study a language. In addition, he says, even if an executive were willing to put in the time to learn a language, the training just doesn’t make economic sense. Anemployer would have to not only cover the cost of language training as well as the executive’s sa lary, but also absorb whatever financial burden results from lost productivity. An executive sitting in the classroom memorizing vocabulary could be an investment in the future, but it would be a very costly one, Lieberthal says, and one that might not produce great returns.Summary:Some companies believe that foreign-language ability plays an unimportant role in (51) , but it does help their employees become (52) into a foreign environment. IBM offers (53) to employees who need foreign language skills to do their job well. Because of the high cost and lack of necessity, corporations do not think training executives in a foreign language makes (54) and believe it may not generate (55) .Section C (10 marks)In this section, there is passage followed by five uncompleted sentences. Read the passage carefully, and then complete the sentences in a maximum of three words for each blank. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet. Read the passage carefully, and then answer the questions in a maximum of ten words. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.Questions 61-65 are based on the following passage.Of all the many factors which contributed to the Industrial Revolution, the most revolutionary and the most impressive was not coal but steam power. J. L. and Barbara Hammond said that steam power “declared the triumph of industry and the glory of man”. From clumsy and inefficient beginnings it was quickly improved to open up tremendous possibilities for industrial progress. The limitations of muscle—power are obvious, and though water had served well to work bellows and hammers in iron works,or to turn machinery like the water-frame and the mule in the textile industry, it could only be applied in a limited way in Britain. For waterpower is most useful in a land with many fast-flowing streams and apart from areas like the Pennines, Scotland, and Wales, this country’s rivers flow slowly. The Alpine area of Europe, and much of the United States relied on water power for much longer than Britain, and hydroelectricity has brought water back into its own in many parts of the world. The geographical limitations of Britain’s water power, however, necessitated finding an alternative solution to the problem. When water vaporizes it expands 1,800 times. The idea of harnessing this energy is far from new. It was probably used by Hero of Alexandria in the 1st century B.C. to open temple doors or to pour libations apparently by magic. Hero’s writings were rediscovered during the Renaissance and many people, including, for example, the Marquis of Worcester (1601-1667) experimented with devices using steam. Regretfully, therefore, we must dismiss the old myth that steam power was born in the mind of a bright Scots lad called Jame s Watt as he sat one winter’s evening watching his mother’s kettle boil on the hearth. Watt’s contribution to steam is incalculable, but steam-pumps had been used in Britain for over seventy years before he began his work. The first steam-engine used in industry was invented byThomas Savery (1650-1715). Called “The Miners’Friend or an engine to raise water by fire”, it was patented in 1698 and worked on simple principles. It pumped water from wells quite efficiently and was used successfully in Cornish copper-mines, but its limitations were revealed when it was tried in the Broadwater Collieries in Staffordshire in 1706 and was found to be capable of pumping water up no more than 100 feet. When greater pressure was used the boiler burst. Therefore, Saver y’s engine was used to supply water in gentlemen’s houses or to work fountains—tasks it could perform effectively, though not quite safely as there was no pressure-gauge.It was Thomas Newcomen (1663-1729), a Dartmouth blacksmith and ironmonger, who produced the first steam-pump to be used widely in industry. It was known as an “atmospheric engine”because, in contrast to Savery’s engine, the steam in the cylinder was not used to drive the pump but only to create a partial vacuum when condensed. Ordinary air pressure drove the piston into the cylinder and this raised the pump which was connected to the piston by a see-sawing cross-beam. A large piston meant that it was possible to gain more force without increasing steam pressure and this made Newcomen’s e ngine much morepowerful than Savery’s.The first engine was made about 1706 but it was a clumsy affair. The piston did not fit tightly into the cylinder and condensation, which was achieved by pouring cold water on the outside of the cylinder, was far from complete. Moreover, the tap controlling the passage of steam into the cylinder was worked by hand seven or eight times a minute. These difficulties were ironed out by 1720;water was now sprayed into the cylinder to improve condensation, the operation of the taps had been made automatic, and a safety-valve had been fitted to eliminate the danger of explosion. The improved engine soon became standard equipment in most large mines, and it was also used to pump water into canals and to supply drinking-water in towns. It is difficult to know exactly how many were in use by the second half of the 18th century but in 1767 fifty-seven were found around Newcastle, and there were eighteen in Cornish mines in 1780. Questions:61. Why could water power only be applied in a limited way in Britain?62. Who was the first person mentioned in the text trying touse steam power?63. There are few decisions that I now regret more. I wasn’t mature enough to see how much I could have gained at home. In China, playing or singing the national anthem and raising the national flag are routines done on a daily basis at Tiananmen Square, and there are always people traveling long distances to watch the ceremony. This year's National Day also marked the first day for the national anthem law to take effect, in order to ensure appropriate use of the song “March of the Volunteers.” Inappropriately using the national anthem at private occasions, commercial events or as background music in public places willbe taken as illegal. The lawbreakers, including those who deliberately change the lyrics, play or sing the national anthem in a distorted(歪曲的) or disrespectful way, can be detained(拘留)for up to 15 days or face further charge in more serious situations. The national anthem “March of the Volunteers” with lyrics by poet Tian Han and music composed by Nie Er, honors those who fought on the front during World War II against Japanese invaders in northeast China. The song will be included in textbooks for primary and secondary schools, and people are encouraged to sing the national anthem on appropriate occasions to express patriotism(爱国主义).Some Chinese internet users worry about whether they will break the law if they cannot sing the song well since they are tone-deaf.“This is a misunderstanding”, Yu Hai,a CPPCC National Committee member, said “The national anthem legislation urges that the song should be played solemnly on formal occasions to show respect to the Chinese nation. And on important occasions, attendees shall pay respect to the song. So whether one can sing the song well or not doesn't result in breaking the law.”28. Which of the following statements is true?A. But truth be told, the best brain sharpener may actually be where you live, science says.In a small pilot study of 25 people, Kansas University researchers used a mapping software called Space Syntax to classify “walkable” neighborhoods, or areas with many nearby places to visit and a complex layout. A Walkable Neighborhood is a place where people live within walking distance to most places they want to visit, whether it is school, a grocery store, a park, church, a bank, retail shops, a drug store, and so on. Their data showed that older adults who lived in more walkable neighborhoods scored higher on cognition(认知) tests.“This could be a relatively small contribution, but it could be important.” Watts, a researcher in Kansas University says. “We can’t change our age, we can’t change whether we have genetic alleles (遗传等位基因)that put us at risk, but we can change how we live.”According to Watts, constantly walking in a more complex neighborhood could improve cognitive function for older adults. Plus, with more places to walk to and visit, older adults have more opportunities to socialize and exercise outside of the house. However, for people with Alzheimer’s(阿兹海默氏症), a complex neighborhood layout could cause a risk; walkability might make it worse if the patients can get confused or lost easily.Although “walkable” neighborhoods keep older brains sharp, experts warn against concluding that living in a walkable neighborhood can prevent Alzheimer’s. A bigger follow-up study is in the works to determine why, exactly, walkable neighborhoods have so many brain benefits, Watts says.32. What do we know about “walkable neighborhoods”?A. Living in a walkable neighborhood can prevent Alzheimer’s.B. Walkable neighborhoods make older adults stay inside the house.C. People living there can walk to the grocery store conveniently.D. It is quite difficult for older adults to walk in a complex layout.33. Why is a walkable neighborhood beneficial to old adults?A. It can enable older adults to find their homes easily.B. It can make older adults live longer.C. It can make older adults gain good genetic alleles.D. It can help improve older adults’ cognitive level.34. What will probably happen to the people with Alzheimer’s if they live in walkable neighborhoods?A. They will keep their brains more active.B. They will lose themselves frequently.C. They will get better medical treatment.D. They will get on well with others.35. What is the best title for the text?A. A Way to Sharpen Your Brain.B. A Solution to Preventing Alzheimer’s.C. A New Mapping Software.D. A Complex Neighborhood Layout.其次节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
