an apple for the teacher
american schoolchildren occasionally present an apple to the teacher. obviously the custom contains an element ofbribery1 — you offer sweet fruit to authority figures to “ sweeten”2 their disposition3 . in schoolchildren’s case, the apple is
offered to make their grades more favorable. therefore, the apple has more or less acquired a corrosive4 reputation and
maybe for this reason, in slang english“ to applepolish ”means“ to flatter or fawn”and an applepolisher is a flatterer.
but the custom might also be explained as a fair payment for the teacher’s instruction. in the early days of publiceducation, school teachers were not always salaried. often they would be paid in goods and services, offered by either the
school, or the pupils or the parents. . .. therefore, the occasional gift of an apple for the teacher in today’s classroom should
be a welcome reminder of the era when education was one -to-one and when teaching meant enlightening the students
rather than identifying their rankings.
caps and gowns
for students, the most exciting moment may be the graduation ceremony5: parents, relatives and friends are invited to theceremony; all the graduates are wearing black square flat caps and gowns. they all await the president to announce in the
end,“now, please move your tassels from right to left. ”
the caps and gowns worn by high school and college graduates today are survivors of the everyday dress worn bymembers of the academic community in medieval europe. the majority of scholars in the middle ages6 were churchmen, or
soon to become so, and their dress was often strictly regulated by the universities where they taught and studied. the
standard clerical dress throughout europe was the long black cope. the original preference for black was changed in the
thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, as such colors as red, violet and purple came into fashion; but by the renaissance black
was back, as the color black symbolized simple and plain, or austere way of life in the sixteenth century. with few exceptions,
modern universities keep that ceremonial austerity.
the origin of the square flat cap, or mortarboard7 , is obscure, though it probably derives from the medieval biretta . sucha tufted square cap is considered the badge of the 024 mastership , and is later adopted by undergraduates and schoolboys.
the term mortarboard does not appear in english until the 1850 s. the tassel that graduates transfer from one side to another
as a signal of their elevation is an outgrowth of the medieval tuft. the tuft still appears on the modern biretta, worn by bishops
throughout the church of rome .

the tree of language
a world with out language
it may be that when the world was young, no one knew how to talk. people had to learn to speak just like babies do.when no one knew how to tell, how did anyone learn? that is a mystery that remains unsolved even today.
the stories behind words
lunch lunch perhaps comes from an old spanish word lonje , a slab of1 ham. we may get our word from a lump of bread, but whether lunch comes from ham or bread, it meant a hunk of something to eat.
atlas an atlas is a strong man, and also a book of maps. the story of this word begins a long time ago in greece. theancient greeks believed that their gods had once been a race of giants2 called titans. the titans fought with another group of
gods called olympians, and the olympians won. atlas was a titan. he was punished for fighting be having to stand at the
western end of the world, holding the sky on his head and hands, so that it would not fall on the world and smash everything.
after the ancient greek religion died out, the idea of atlas changed. from holding up the sky with his head and hands, hecame to be thought of as holding the world on his shoulders. mercator3, a map maker of the sixteenth century, used a picture
of atlas on the cover of a book of maps, so a book of maps came to be called an atlas.
the word has still another meaning. the top bone of the neck is called atlas because it supports the head. good-bye or good-by good-bye is a blessing; originally it was god be with ye, and in the course of time it became oneword. many of our greetings are good wishes, but we say them with so little thought that we forget this. when we say good
morning, good evening, good night, and so on, what we are really saying is,“ i hope you will have a good morning ( or
evening, or night) . ”
daisy the daisy has a little golden eye , like a tiny sun . perhaps this is the reason the english people named it day’s eye,or perhaps they chose the name because the english daisy closes at night. the english loved their daisies, which were pink

They're still kids, and although there's a lot that the
experts don't yet know about them, one thing they do agree on
is that what kids use and expect from their world has changed
rapidly. And it's all because of technology.
To the psychologists, sociologists, and generational and
media experts who study them, their digital gear sets this new
group apart, even from their tech-savvy (懂技术的) Millennial
elders. They want to be constantly connected and available in
a way even their older siblings don't quite get. These
differences may appear slight, but they signal an
all-encompassing sensibility that some say marks the dawning
of a new generation.
The contrast between Millennials and this younger group was

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.
A new era is upon us. Call it what you will: the service economy,
the information age, the knowledge society. It all translates
to a fundamental change in the way we work. Already we’re partly
there. The percentage of people who earn their living by making
things has fallen dramatically in the Western World. Today the
majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan (two thirds or
more in many of these countries) are in the service industry,
and the number is on the rise. More women are in the work force
than ever before. There are more part-time jobs. More people
are self-employed. But the breadth of the economic
transformation can’t be measured by numbers alone, because it
also is giving rise to a radical new way of thinking about the

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk about the 2021
English CET-6 June exam paper 3 and the answers. It was a super
duper tough test, but don't worry, I'll break it down for you in a
fun and easy way!
The first section of the test was all about listening. We had to
listen to some conversations and answer questions about them.
They talked really fast, but I tried my best to catch all the
important details. The questions were like, "What did the man
buy at the store?" or "Where are they going on vacation?" It was
tricky, but I think I did okay.
Next up was the reading section. We had to read some
passages and answer questions about them. Some of the
passages were about history, science, or even literature. I had to
really pay attention to the details to get the answers right. It was

Passage One
Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.
Caught in a squeeze between the health needs of aging
populations on one hand and the financial crisis on the other,
governments everywhere are looking for ways to slow the growth
in health-care spending. Increasingly, they are looking to the
generic-drugs (普通药物) industry as a savior. In November
Japan's finance ministry issued a report complaining that the
country's use of generics was less than a third of that in
America or Britain. In the same month Canada's competition
watchdog criticized the country's pharmacies for failing to
pass on the savings made possible by the use of generic drugs.
That greed, it reckoned, costs taxpayers nearly C$1 billion a
year.
Then on November 28th the European Commission issued the

2021 年 6 ⽉(第⼀套) Genetic Selection and Intelligence基因选择与智⼒之间的关系到底⼤不⼤呢?Humans are fascinated by the source of their failings and virtues. This preoccupation inevitably leads to an old debate: whether molds us more.A revolution in genetics has poised this as a modern political question about the character of our society: if personalities are hard-wired into our genes, what can governments do to help us?It feels morally questionable, yet claims of genetic selection by intelligence are making headlines. This is down to "hereditarian" science and a recent paper claimed, "differences in exam performance between pupils attending schools mirror the genetic differences between them."With such an assertion, the work was predictably greeted by a lot of absurd claims about "genetics determining academic success."What the research revealed was the rather less surprising result: the educational benefits of selective schools largely disappear once pupils' ⼈类着迷于探究他们的失败和美德的根源。 inborn ability and socio-economic background were taken into account. It is a glimpse of the blindingly obvious — and there's nothing to back strongly either a hereditary or environmental argument.Yet the paper does say children are "unintentionally genetically selected" by the .Central to hereditarian science is a tall claim: that identifiable variationsin genetic sequences can predict an individual's aptness to learn, reasonand solve problems. This is problematic on many levels.A teacher could not seriously tell a parent their child has a low genetic tendency to study when external factors clearly exist.Unlike-minded academics say the inheritability of human traits is scientifically unsound. At best there is a weak statistical association and not a causal link between and intelligence. Yet sophisticated statistics are used to create an intimidatory atmosphere of scientific certainty. While there's an undoubted genetic basis to individual difference, it is wrong to think that socially defined groups can be genetically accounted for.The fixation on genes as destiny is surely false too.Medical predictability can rarely be based on DNA alone; the environment matters too.Something as complex as intellect is likely to be affected by many factors beyond genes. If hereditarians want to advance their cause it will require more balanced interpretation and not just acts of advocacy.Genetic selection is a way of exerting influence over others, "the ultimate collective control of human destinies," as writer H.G. Wells put it.Knowledge becomes power and power requires a sense of responsibility. In understanding , we must not elevate discrimination to a science; allowing people to climb the ladder of life only as far as their cells might suggest. This will need a more skeptical eye on the science. As technology progresses, we all have a duty to make sure that we shape a future that we would want to find ourselves in.

Passage Two
What can be done about mass unemployment? All the wise heads agree:
therere no quick or any answers. Theres work to be done, but workers arent ready to
do it-theyre in the wrong places, or they have the wrong skills. Our problem are
structural, and will take many years to solve.
But dont bother asking for evidence that justifies this bleak view. There isnt any.
On the contrary, all the facts suggest that high unemployment in America is the result
of inadequate demand. Saying that therere no easy answers sounds wise, but its
actually foolish: our unemployment crisis could be cured very quickly if we had the
intellectual clarity and political will to act. In other words, structural unemployment is

2021 年 6 ⽉ (第三套)Why Do We Emulate OurConversation Partner's Actions?
Emulating your conversation partner's actions is a common human
behavior classified as "mirroring" and has been known and studied by
psychologists for years.
We all tend to subconsciously copy gestures of people we like.
But why do we act like this?
As a rule, mirroring means that conversationalists enjoy their
communication and that there's a certain level of agreement between
them.
The topic of discussion is equally interesting for both and they know
their interests meet.
Repeating someone's behavior is typical of talented communicators, not
always because the person is sympathetic, but because there is a goal to
be achieved.
This way new idols have been brought to the stage: politicians,
celebrities, and other big names.
