Quite simply, because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person had the right to fail. Most parents work hard at preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her child’s hastily made table as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to shift blame. If John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. The trouble with failure-prevention devices is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything. No one can win all the time---and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. A child who’s not invitedto a birthday party, who doesn’t make the honor list on the baseball team, feels terrible, of course, but parents should not offer a quick consolation prize(安慰奖) or say, “It doesn’t matter.” Because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment---and be helped to master it. Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step one is to ask “why did I fail?” Don’t blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about inquiring.Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn from a bad party how to give a second one, from an ill—chosen first house what to look for in a second. Even a failure that seems definitive can prompt(激起) fresh thinking, a change of direction. After 12 years of studying ballet a friend of mine auditioned(面试) for a professional company. She was turned down. “would further training help?” she asked. The ballet master shook his head. “You will never be a dancer,” he said, “you haven’t the body for it.”In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock(鉴定) bravely and ask, “What have I left? What else can I do?” My friend put away her shoes and moved into dance treatment center, a field where she’s both able and useful. Failure frees one to take risks because there’s less to lose. Often there is recovery of energy—a way to find new possibilities.46. The first paragraph tells us _______.A. the reason why so many people are afraid of failureB. the reason why we don’t know how to failC. failure is very natural for every personD. one should be ready to face failure at any time.47. The second paragraph tells us___________.A. how a mother praised her childrenB. two ways of failure prevention most parents use when their children failC. how to shift blameD. parents should blame their children at the proper time48. According to the author, what should a child know in the real world?A. Ways to avoid failure.B. No one can be best all the time at everything.C. No parents should offer quick consolation.D. He can get pleasure from failure as well as success.49. What can make a positive contribution to one’s life once he learns to use it?A. SuccessB. DisappointmentC. FailureD. Value.BWas he dreaming? David Ewart saw a red ball of fire. He shot out of a deep sleep and heard his ten-year-old daughter, Heather, screaming. Ewart jumped out of bed on the second floor of his home. Downstairs he heard loud popping noises, glass bulbs, furniture, appliances exploding as fire consumed them.Three hundred and fifty people, including friends and family members, had attended Ewart’s annual Christmas party at his home in Valencia, California. David was a giver. They all enjoyed themselves. After the party, he and his 77-year-old mother, Esther, put out the candles—all but one, missed and left burning on a holiday paper tablecloth. Now, as Ewart started down the hall to alert his parents and three children, he said a silent prayer: God, if it is your will, save us. The heat was hellish(地狱般的). But then he felt a hand on his shoulder—and something that was not quite a voice guiding him, giving him the direction: the bedroom window. He kicked out the window screen and told Heather to jump onto the patio(院子) cover, crawl to the edge and drop to the ground, the feet below. Next he headed for his two sons, Jonathan, 13, and Michael, 15, who were screaming with pain. David led Jonathan to the window. He returned for Michael, who was now helping his grandparents, trapped in their room behind a jammed door. Michael threw himself against it and finally burst through. David guided his mother, then Michael, to safety.Only his father remained. The 81-year-old’s face was badly burned. He lost his footing and fell. David took his hand and helped him to the window. Too weak to hold on, his father rolled off the patio cover to the ground. Finally,David escaped. Second later, the second floor exploded, yet all the while, he felt he was being led, under protection. The family survived and firefighters said they were mystified(迷惑) as to how the family survived. David Ewart was not.50. Why did the fire take place?A. This visually striking and finely made life-size portrait(肖像)records Washington’s 6-foot-2-inch figure in a pose highlighting strength, composure(沉着), and elegance(高雅). It is put up in a room neighboring to the Powel House parlor(客厅), a periodroom from one of Philadelphia’s greatest eighteenth-century private homes, where Washington was frequently entertained by his friends, Samuel and Elizabeth Powel. Both spaces contain important examples of furniture by Philadelphia’s finest craftsmen, such as Thomas Affleck and Aitken. Among these is a side chair specially ordered by the Washingtons when living in Philadelphia.Painted in Philadelphia in 1779, Peal’s painting was immediately sent to Europe to promote Washington’s reputation as a leader and the cause of the American Revolution, then in progress. Later , during Europe’s Napoleonic Wars, a Spanish duke(公爵) with strong sympathies with American Revolution owned the picture. At that time he added the complicated carved caption(标题) to it, which describes Washington as “a liberator of his country who abandoned absolute power.”Curators馆长,监护人American Art Department Staff, website commentary by Carol SoltisLocation位子Galleries 286 and 287, second floor55. Unit 5单元测试题第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

AOn a dark winter day in Russia in 1896, Sergei Prokofiev sat by a piano next to his mother. She was helping him compose (作曲) his first piece of music. Sergei was only five years old.He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine (饥荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story, in the form of musical notes. Sergei could not read music, so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes. Sergei titled it “Indian Gallop.”Sergei's mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day, and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano.Sergei's parents found a famous music teacher for him. The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn't practice reading and playing music. Sergei later wrote, “I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks.” Yet he persisted with his studies and grew up to be a great composer. In 1936 a children's theater asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf.Sergei's Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited.Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions (贡献) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun.21. When he was five, Sergei _____.A. could read musicB. experienced a famineC. created his first compositionD. wrote a story about his parents22. What does the underlined part “persisted with” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Hurried up.B. Put up with.C. Continued with.D. Walked away from.23. The piece of music Peter and the Wolf _____.A. was a great successB. was one of Sergei's early worksC. was written to teach children about the pianoD. was played three extra times when first played24. What's the text mainly about?A. The greatest 20th-century composer.B. Sergei's contributions to music.C. Musical plays in Russia.D. Sergei's musical stories.BInside Out is one of my favorite Disney / Pixar movies. The story is about a young girl named Riley who moves from Minnesota to San Francisco with her family and how she deals with her emotions (情感) through the move. These five emotions in Riley's brain are Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust (厌恶) and Sadness. These emotions play a very important role in her life. I can relate because I am an 11-year-old girl and I am very in touch with my emotions and pre-teen feelings. The film is extremely beautiful and you couldn't ask for better direction from Pete Doctor. The use of the right colors for the characters is great. For example, Joy is yellow, Sadness is blue, Disgust is green, Fear is purple and Anger of course is red. Sadness plays a main role in the story and it makes me wonder why we are told not tobe sad. I think it's important to be sad when the time comes. The end of the movie pretty much got me and the whole audience (观众) (families, couples and even elderly people) in tears and I cried very hard.I recommend (推荐) this movie for anyone from 8 to 18 because it has enough joy in it for younger kids to like it even though it does have some sad moments. I believe that adults will like it too. And I give it 4 out of 5 stars because it connects to an older audience even though it is designed for a younger audience. I think younger children can see this, but a parent would have to explain some things to them after the movie.25. The author feels connected with the movie because she and the character Riley_____.A. enjoy the same movieB. have the same feelingsC. have the same move experienceD. have a similar family background26. What does the author think of Pete Doctor's job?A. Bad.B. Just so-so.C. Wonderful.D. Disappointing.27. After seeing the movie, the author has a new understanding of _____.A. fearB. sadnessC. angerD. joy28. In the author's eyes, the movie _____.A. won't attract people over 18B. is really unsuitable for childrenC. will be popular among kids and adultsD. can easily be understood by younger kidsCMary bought a dress in a women's clothing store. She felt very happy about buying the dress until she got home. Then she remembered she had left her purse atthe store. It was the third time that month that Mary had forgotten something important. Mary was angry with herself. She said, “Am I losing it?”Emma was teaching a class in mathematics at a college. She began to explain to the students how to solve a very difficult problem. She understood it very well. But somehow, at that moment, she could not explain it. Emma said, “I must be losing it.”Americans seem to have a lot of concern about losing it. At least that is what you would think from hearing them talk. They use the expression when they feel they are losing control. It can mean losing emotional control. Or losing the ability to do something. Or losing intelligence.Word experts differ about how the expression started. Some believe it came from television programs popular in the 1980s. Others believe it began with psychologists, who deal with how people think, feel and act.“We Americans have many concerns about controlling our lives. Perhaps we worry too much,” one psychologist said. “In many situations, to say you are losing it eases the tension (不安). It's healthy. And most people who say they are having a problem are not losing it.”Pe ople may feel more like they are losing it when they are “down in the dumps”. Word expert Charles Funk says people have been feeling down in the dumps for more than 400 years. The word dumps probably comes from Northern European countries. The languages of Denmark and Norway both have similar words. The words mean to fall suddenly. Americans borrowed this saying. And, over the years, it has become a popular way of expressing sadness.29. What problem did Mary think she had?A. She seemed to have a poor memory.B. She lost the ability to shop wisely.C. She easily lost emotional control.D. She had quite low intelligence.30. How does the author explain the use of losing it?A. By using examples.B. By giving instructions.C. By providing research findings.D. By describing his own experiences.31. We can infer from the psychologist that _____.A. Americans worry too much about their health problemsB. people really lose it when they say they're losing itC. it's good for your health to say you're losing itD. Construction (建设) of the National Museum of African-American Music (NMAAM) will begin this year. NMAAM’s aim is to celebrate the more than 50 music styles that African Americans have created or influenced.“Whether you’re talking about countr y, blues, R&B, jazz, even rock and roll, the odds (可能性) are pretty high that it’s African American in its beginnings,” NMAAM president and CEO Henry Hicks says. The museum is due to open in 2019. Visitors will have many chances to explore and learn. They will be able to enjoy musical performances and learn the history behind the music. They will be able to record their own songs and try out dance moves.NMAAM is already offering programs, including a summer music camp heldat Tennessee State University, in Nashville. The most interesting part for camper Matthew Mueller, 10, was when Lucius “Spoonman” Talley played the spoons, a creative way to make music.“People started using spoons because they were something that all people had. AThe term country music refers to a variety of styles, originally popular among working class white Americ ans in the rural areas of the South and West.Originally known as “hillbilly music”,the term was replaced by country and western music in 1949 and eventually shortened to country music. But the origins of country music go way back a century ago,to the waves of immigrants from Britain and Ireland.Their songs and dances, nursery rhymes and ballads, would form the most important part of the folk musical tradition of rural America, and the basis for what became known as “old time”music. These roots of country music lie largely in the folk songs and instrumental music of the English,Irish, and Scots who settled in the Appalachian areas of the MidSouth during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many of these mountainous areas were not settled until the 1830s,and then by impoverished immigrants who were concerned with the daily struggle for survival. The communities were cut off from the rest of America and still attached to their traditions.Other origins of country music can be traced back to the flamenco and habanera music of Spain, the polka and other dances of Eastern Europe and—as with almost all the popular music of the United States—the influence of the slave populations shipped from the African continent. In fact one of the major instruments in Appalachian and early country music, the banjo, has its origins in AfroAmerican history. Two publishing events in the early part of the 20th century excited a widespread interest in America's white musical tradition and “old time” music.First,in 1910,the musicologist John Lomax published Co w boy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads. Then in 1916 the English song collector Cecil Sharp put together a collection of folk music from the Appalachian mountains. But it wasn't until 1922,when Texas fiddler(小提琴家) Eck Robertson cut the firs t record of “old time”music, that the popularity of what also became known as“hillbilly music”really began to grow, via pioneering artists, record labels and radio stations. The record that more generally gets cited as the first country release was made in June 1923 by Fiddlin' John Carson.21.What does the text mainly discuss?A.The history of the US folk music.B.The origins of country music.C.The influence of “old time” music.D.The waves of immigrants in the US.22.The underlined word “impoverished” in Paragraph 3 most probably means“______”.A.brave B.poor C.legal D.kind23.Who made a great contribution to the spread of Appalachian music?A.Fiddlin' John Carson. AMy school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work, but it was all worth it. I got blisters from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.I learned a lot about gardening and cooperation, and then I learned about the media. Our teachers telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them. The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth-grade students. As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project. That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter toldour story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. He ran to the scene with his first-aid kit and found an old lady sitting at the bus stop. When boarding (上车) the bus, the old lady painfully hurt her left leg, which was bleeding. He introduced himself, and asked some basic first-aid questions to get a general picture of her health. When he had nearly finished, he told the lady that she was his first one. Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Across the country, sports injuries are a safety concern for young athletes. Now, the American Medical Association (AMA) has a new set of guidelines aimed at protecting players from the danger of concussions—serious injuries caused by a blow to the head."By raising awareness of the serious risks associated with concussions and ensuring that the appropriate guidelines are in place, we can reduce the number of young athletes who may return to the game too soon, which can put their health at further risk, said AMA Board Member Jack Resneck Jr, M.D., in a statement. The policy recommends that young athletes who may have a concussion be taken off the field as soon as possible. Then, they are only to return to their sport with a doctor's written approval.
