Task 4

√ Using the example discussed by the professor, explain what cognitive dissonance is and how people often deal with it

√ Explain how the examples of tying shoes and learning to type demonstrate the principle of audience effects.

Cognitive dissonance

Individuals sometimes experience a contradiction between their actions and their beliefs---between what they are doing and what they believe they should be doing. These contradictions can cause a kind of mental discomfort known as cognitive dissonance.People experiencing cognitive dissonance often do not want to change the way they are acting,so they resolve the contradictory situation in another way. They change their interpretation of the situation in a way that minimizes the contradiction between what they are doing and what they believe should be doing.

Social interaction

People deal with each other everyday. This interaction is at the heart of social life. The study of social interaction is concerned with the influence people have over one another’s behavior. People take each other into account in their daily behavior and in fac t,the very presence of others can affect behavior. For example, one principle of social interaction, audience effects, suggests that individuals’ work is affected by their knowledge that they are visible to others, that the presence of others tends to alter the way people behave or perform an activity.

Explain how the examples of tying shoes and learning to type demonstrate the principle of audience effects.

位语为a kind of mental discomfort。 Cognitive dissonance is a kind of mental discomfort. Cognitive Dissonance is a kind of mental discomfort people feel when they experience contradictions between their actions and their beliefs.

This is a true story from my own life. In my first year in high school,I was addicted to video games. I played them all the time and I wasn’t studying enough. I was failing Chemistry that was my hardest class. So this was a conflict for me because I want ed a good job when I grew up and I believed,I knew, that if you want a good career you gotta do well in school. But I just couldn’t give up video games!I was completely torn.

And my solution was to change my perspective. See,the only class I was doing really badly in was Chemistry. In the others,I wa s OK. So I asked myself if I wanted to be a chemist when I grew up. And the fact is I didn’t. I was pretty sure I wanted to b e a sociologist. So I told myself my chemistry class didn’t matter, because sociologists don’t need to know chemistry. In other word s,I changed my understanding of what it meant to do well in school. I reinterpreted my situation. I used to think that doing well in school meant doing well in all my classes. But now I decided that succeeding in school meant only doing well in the classes that related directly with my future career. I eliminated the conflict,at least in my mind.

People experiencing cognitive dissonance often do not want to change the way they are acting与听力中的But I just couldn’t give up video games! And my solution was to change my perspective. They change their interpretation of the situation。

Cognitive Dissonance is a kind of mental discomfort people feel when they experience contradictions between their actions and their beliefs. The professor uses his own experience to illustrate this phenomenon. When he was in high school,he was addicted to video games. He didn’t do well in study and even failed in chemistry. He knew he should study well in order to find good jobs and have a good career. But he just couldn’t give up video games. And this was his conflict. His solution was to change his perspective.Chemistry was the only class he did badly. He was pretty sure that he wanted to be a sociologist and being a sociologist doesn’t need to be well in chemistry. So he reinterpreted his understanding of doing well in school. Initially,he thought he should do well in all subjects to be successful in school. But then,he thought he should only do well in the subjects that are directly related to his future career. So he changed his belief to eliminate the conflict.

如可将听力中的change my perspective换成alter my understanding。

Other people prefer to move to different places. Which do you prefer and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your response. sample answer: I prefer to move around a lot instead of settling in one place because first of all I believe most people’s growth comes with the changes in their lives. For example, after finishing my junior high school in China, I decided to go to Canada. This gives me an opportunity to be instructed in an entirely different manner. I’ve become a more independent thinker and learned how to look at things from different perspectives. If I were still studying in China, I quite doubt I would learn all this. Secondly, I think that by moving around, people are able to experience diverse circumstances which give them new experiences and broaden their views, and thus they can get more comprehensive understanding of the world, the society and life itself.

Task 3 “To succeed academically in English-speaking colleges and universities,students need to be able to combine all their English-language skills- in reading,listening,and speaking…”,所以在新托福口语task3中考生们首先遭遇了先读,再听,后说相结合的考试形式,虽然内容为较易理解的校园生活场景,但环环相扣的考试环节加上严格紧张的时间限制,不免给备考带来了种种压力。 支招:笔记中只需要notice/message/proposal (key words) + reasons(keywords)。 例如:(Official Guide P213)announcement 关键词位于第一行“increase tuition”,而通过“but itis necessary to increase them now for several reasons”和“we havealso…” 例如在(Official GuideP214-215),我们可以看到“But I can see why”,“ And the other thing is ”,“I’mdoing OK, but the facilities here are so limited.”这些明显的信号句所引出的关键信息,所以笔记可记为:many students(班级+),hard get personalattention (关注?),not job(工作难),facilities?equipment ?(设备?)out of date(过时) 三.

What charactereristics do you think a good teacher should have?(06. 3.3; 07. 11.3考题)

Sample answer: In my view, a good teacher should have different characteristics. First, a good teacher should be faithful and dedicated to the job. If a teacher is faithful to the job, then s/he never cheats and will be impartial(偏向)and students will respect such a teacher. If a teacher is dedicated towards his/her work, then s/he will teach with his/her heart. Another most important characteristic of a good teacher is patience. Teachers should never lose their patience in class when students ask questions repeatedly. A teacher should explain each and every aspect of the topic in the easiest way. Most of all, a good teacher should update his/her knowledge ‘cause further learning can make a good teacher re-discover the beauty of the teaching profession. 2. What are important characteristics you look for in friends?(06. 5.12; 06. 6.24; 07.1.27考题) Sample answer: I think what makes a good friend is someone who is honest, supportive, and has a good sense of humor. I just look for someone who's honest to me no matter what. He should not tell stories behind my back; he should tell me my short-comings at my mouth, but never praises me in front of me. It is a well known saying that "A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED." Therefore, a friend should stand by you in the hour of any sort of need. I just think that a good friend won't leave me if I'm in trouble. They can be my friends in sunshine and in shade, care for me even when the times are bad and even more when the times are great. Also, I'd love to spend more time with someone who can make me laugh and is fun to be around. 3. Describe a person that influenced you most.(06. 5.26; 06. 3. 17;06.10.22考题;与06.5.26类似) Sample answer: The person that really influenced me most was Ms. Xing---my college teacher who taught us English literature. Her class was quite different from the other teachers. In her class we were not expected to sit there and listen. We had to get more involved in the class activities, like discussions, comments or debates sometimes. Our creativity and imagination were developed enormously through the active participation. On the other hand, she let us think more about life by sharing her experiences and more importantly, she taught me how to live on my own. So that's why I was greatly influenced. Not only did she give me knowledge, but also she gave me courage and confidence as well.
