The path also has a special charge (电荷). The lightning can follow this path almost as if it were a lightning rod. Scientist Matteo Clerici said, “The fact that we managed to do it in an outdoor environment is a very big step.”But the laser still didn’t guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. Besides, the laser is also very expensive. The scientists say it cost about $2 billion. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser like this is truly able to protect large buildings.6.To know how powerful lightning can be, which paragraph can we read?A.Paragraph 2.B.Paragraph 3.C.Paragraph 4.D.Paragraph 5.7.What is the laser technology expected to protect?A.High-rise buildings.B.Large buildings.C.Beautiful buildings.D.Important buildings.8.Why are lasers not used widely for changing the path of lightning strike now?A.Putting metal rods on the buildings is the best way.B.Some buildings are so large that it’s difficult to protect.C.Lasers are only able to guide lightning for a short distanceD.Lasers are so expensive that scientists can’t pay for experimenting.9.What can we learn from what Matteo Clerici said?A.Scientists still need to work harder to achieve a greater success.B.It is not easy for scientists to guide lightning with lasers outside.C.Scientists need to change working environment in next experiments.D.It is a great progress for scientists to guide lightning with lasers outside.10.What can we get to know at the end of the passage?A.Behind bad luck comes good luck.B.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.C.There is still a long way to go before a laser can really work.D.For scientists, working together is better than working alone.CHave you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow? Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is to book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru (秘鲁).Rainbow Mountain is a beautiful natural wonder. It lies in the Andes in Cusco (库斯科的安第斯山脉). As its name suggests, the mountain has different colours. But why is it in yellow, green, red and purple? The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt (融化), the water mixed with the minerals (矿物质) in the ground and turned the earth into many colours. If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing more difficult and the colours will look less beautiful. The best time is from March to November, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or evening, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny days may make you not take nice photos. To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco—a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three-hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but the trip is very difficult. Do you remember the name of your kindergarten (幼儿园) teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs. White. And I remember I thought she must be a sister of Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair and fair skin as her.I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections (改正), and always a star. Sometimes even a Good, which would make me fly with happiness. So one day when my mother went to meet Mrs. White for one of those parent-teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical mistakes.“The children are just beginning to get excited about using words and forming (形成) sentences. I don’t want my students to lose interest because of red ink (墨水). Spelling and grammar can wait, the wonder of words won’t...”Mrs. White said.Later I knew that if Mrs White had used her red pen often, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather unusual teacher to use as less red pen as possible.I used to misspell (拼错) “beautiful” a lot, and could never remember that the “e”goes before the “a”. It made my teacher in high school angry. She asked me to use “pretty” when I was writing. I didn’t listen to her. To my eyes, “pretty” is easier to spell, but it doesn’t hold as much as we mean sometimes. And thanks to Mrs. White, I never worried about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out, because life isn’t “pretty”. It’s “beautiful”.21.How might Nancy’s mother feel before she went to meet Mrs. White?A.Worried.B.Pleased.C.Proud.D.Embarrassed.22.Which one is right according to what Mrs. White said in Paragraph 3?A.Children don’t have the patience in spelling words.B.Red corrections are used to draw children’s attention.C.Children’s interest of learning words is very important.D.Grammar and spelling should be paid more attention to.23.What is the correct order according to the text?a. I work hard, but the dog only shakes its tail, barks and jumps onto the master’s knee. It is not fair.”Then the donkey said to himself, “If I do what the dog does, the master may choose me as his pet.”As we walked about halfway down the hillside, she fell over a stone. But in China, I rarely see people reading during their free time. Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books over regular books. However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the US than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature. From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms(《三国演义》)to the modern science-fiction epic The Three-Body Problem(《三体》),Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Chinese students definitely(肯定) have to read more and do more homework that US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time. But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?1. From Paragraph 1, what do we know about people in the US?A. Most people take public transportation to work.B. Students have homework to do on their way to school.C. Many of them have the habit of reading.D. They read books that are left behind on public transportation.2. Which of the following is TRUE?A. Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have change d.B. Our answers may be different greatly. Even now your dream may have changed from when you were in primary school. However, it seems career choices aren’t only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the UK in May 2011, in which medicine was the top choice among the UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions(职业). Doctors and lawyers are some of the most respected members of society, and they make good money. It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important signs of a successful career. British young men list the UK tycoon Alan Sugar, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”. Just asChinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun pathway to “wealth”.However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer, or banker. They are those who see happiness in other areas. As the Teens’ survey discovered, a lot of new and challenging jobs---coffee shop owner, waiter at a fast food restaurant---are among teenagers’ career choices. But they would do well to remember that a new choice is available --- micro-homes.Fondly called “tiny houses,” these houses have all living necessities in a small package, including kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Generally under 50 square meters, most tiny houses can hold just one or two people though some say they have the space for more. What’s lost in size is not lost in design as these homes are often quite modern in design.Besides an attractive appearance, tiny houses can also have practical features(特点). Making the best of urban space, the 72-to-122-centimeter-wide Keret House in Warsaw, the world’s narrowest home, filled in an alley(小巷). The house uses solar power, wind power and rainwater collection to make its owner live practically anywhere.Although micro-homes are attractive, there are a few disadvantages to consider before getting comfortable on a minicouch. Moving into a tiny house, you should throw away unnecessary things. It is also mostly impossible to invite guests. I know people who graduated late at 25 and they found work immediately. I know people who never went to university but found what they love at 18. I know people who found a job straightout of college making much money but hate what they do. I know people who took gap years and found their purpose. I know people who were so sure about what they were going to do at 16, but they changed their mind at 26. So my point is everything in life happens according to our time, our clock. You may look at some of your friends and think that they’re ahead of you. Maybe some of them you feel are behind. But everything happens at their own pace (速度). They have their own time and clock and so do you. Be patient. It took till 32 for J.K. Rowling to be published for Harry Potter. Ortega set up Zara when he was 39. Jack Ma started Alibaba when he was 35. Morgan Freeman got his big break (机遇) at 52. Steve Carell only got his break after 40 years old. Virgin was started by Richard Branson at 34.Getting your degree (学位) after 25 is still an achievement. Not being married at 30 but still happy is beautiful. Starting a family after 35 is still possible. And buying a house after 40 is still great. Don’t let anyone rush you with their time lines. As Einstein said, “Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that’s counted truly counts.” And this is the most important thing. I want you to be able to have meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling (让人感觉有意义的) lives for yourselves, and learn how to use that to make a difference in the lives of others. That will be the true success.1. The speech may make the listeners think life is full of ______.A. dangerB. hopeC. fearD. surprise答案:1~4 CCDBPassage 11Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in t heir lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brother s and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families. You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied s hyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelisworry less about failure and are less shy.For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget---if you are shy, you are not the only one.1. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness(固执), or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as uncomfortable, therefore, people try to fill every gap with conversations. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs. Many Native Americans think silence is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied (暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.Other cultures may use silence in other ways, especially when dealing with conflicts (矛盾)among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may keep silent when a powerful person is giving instructions because they think it rude to argue with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may regard silence as a sign of respect.Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of。

冲刺2024年中考英语必考题型终极预测(重庆专用)专题03 阅读理解(记叙文) 15篇(2023·重庆渝中·重庆巴蜀中学校考模拟预测)Candy is smart, talented and really nice. As a team leader, she wishes Frank, a member of her politics project, did his part as required. But rather than criticize (批评)him, only to find that Frank kept falling behind. It ended up that other team members, who had to take on more work, while Frank himself complained that he was not treated fairly. How did poor Candy get into this mess? The primary reason was that Candy failed in a key part of leadership—the duty to provide clear feedback(反馈)for team members. This isn’t simply a duty but a correctness.Failing to question or criticize Frank’s work, Candy was in fact unkind. Many people are not a failure, like Frank. They’re just in the wrong place, and still left in the dark. What they really need is feedback from their leaders. However, Candy didn’t bring out a gift in Frank.A leader had better use open, honest, continuous and clear feedback to help solve someone’s best fit in their job or in the organization. This method also avoids surprises. It’s not uncommon to see someone suddenly removed from a team. Maybe it serves them right, they wouldn’t have been caught off-guard (猝不及防)because they would have been receiving open, continuous and clear judgment of their performance. Then why is it so hard for leaders to give good feedback? People always like to be liked, so they avoid anything that may cause unpleasantness. But that kind of feedback usually helps members find the right place for them. If you just only like to be liked, the chance of being respected is really low. However, you have a chance of being liked. Of course, the most difficult part for a nice leader is criticizing someone.Back to Candy’s case. Not telling Frank how he was on the team only made a hard situation worse. But with a different mindset, she could have led her team to success and have been a likeable and critical leader.1.The word “gift” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ________”.A.present B.ability C.pride D.praise2.According to this article, what is necessary between leaders and team members?A.Being nice to team members is likely to win leaders great respect.B.Criticizing team members results in serious complaints to the leader.C.Open and honest communication is a must for leaders and team members.D.Praise and encouragement from leaders bring out better team performance.3.Based on the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.Candy should patiently encourage Frank to try his best.B.Candy should gradually kick Frank off her team.C.Candy should politely show Frank the improvement he made.D.Candy should clearly tell Frank her judgment of his performance.4.What is the best title of the passage?A.Become a Good Leader B.Set a Good TeamC.Frank’s problem D.Cindy’s Worry(2023·重庆大渡口·统考二模)①Walking around the city, you will see girls wearing hanfu on the underground or people wearing T-shirt with Chinese characters in the streets. This is one of my Chinese teacher’s favorite Chinese idioms (习语), Deyuwangquan. It comes from Zhuangzi and the meaning of it is that you are used to getting help from others but don’t show your thanks to them. When I studied this idiom in the United States, I read traditional Chinese characters (汉字). The character for“fish” has four dots (点) at the bottom. However, when today’s Chinese students study this idiom, they read simplified (简化的) characters. The character for “fish” only has a line at the bottom. This simplified character is easier to write. However, why are the four dots replaced by a line, rather than something else? And how many of you have thought about this? This simplification of Chinese characters started in the 1950s. The purpose was to improve literacy (文学). Simplified characters are easier for people to read and write. However, they fear that over-simplifying Chinese characters may cause some cultural heritage (遗产) to be lost. The first four dots at the bottom of the character for “fish” come from even older characters. These characters not only mean fish but also look like a fish. There are hundreds of such characters in Chinese. Each of them has a story behind its meaning. Some people have suggested that schools should teach traditional characters.
如Adela、Manchester、NATO。

15Extra Passage 15In most countries, the law on organ transplantation is poorly defined, as legislation has not yet been created to cope with this advance in surgery. The existing framework relating to physical assault and care of the dead has no provision for organ transplantation. It is customary to ask the permission of the relatives, but, because organ removal must take place immediately after death, it may be impossible to reach the relatives in time. It has been suggested that there should be a widespread campaign to encourage persons to provide in their wills that their organs be used for transplantation. An alternative is to provide by law that permission is assumed unless removal has been forbidden by the individual in his lifetime. Such laws have been passed in Denmark, France, Sweden, Italy, and Israel. Compulsory postmortem examination, a far more extensive procedure than organ removal for grafting, is required in most countries after unexpected death, and this compulsion is not a matter of public concern and debate. There would seem to be no reason why organ removal for transplantation purpose should not also be acceptable to public opinion, provided there is a mechanism by which individuals in their lifetime can refuse this permission. This, of course, requires an efficient register of those who indicate their refusal: the register would be consulted before any organs would be removed. It is important thatthere be public reassurance that consideration of transplantation would not impair normal resuscitative efforts of the potential donor.Transplantation has obviously raised important ethical considerations concerning the diagnosis of death, and, particularly, how far resuscitation should be continued. Every effort must be made to restore the heartbeat to someone who has had a sudden cardiac arrest or breathing to someone who cannot breathe. Artificial respiration and massage of the heart, the standard methods of resuscitation, are continued until it is clear that the brain is dead. Most physicians consider that beyond this point efforts at resuscitation are useless.1. According to the author, which of the following is NOT true?A.Most countries do not have an effective law on organ transplantation.B.The traditional way of asking for permission of relatives for organ removal does not prove to be always feasible.C.It is hard to understand why people should remain silent on compulsory postmortem exam after unexpected death.D.In some countries there are laws providing that the permission of organ removal is taken for granted unless it has been refused by the person in his life time.2. Which of the follow is NOT a suggestion made in passage?A.People be encouraged to donate their organ after deathan removal should be permitted in course of compulsory postmortem examan removal for transplantation should be advocated because it benefits the human societyan removal for transplantation could be considered legal unless the dead person stated otherwise in his lifetime3. The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health. There are plenty of "energy drinks" on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great! But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine (咖啡因)in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited(限制)its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passingcar lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘)seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象)would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the "enemy(敌人)" would not discover me.Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn't let the leaders out of my sight.Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. My wife recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some of the extreme trauma (精神创伤)and pain of the loss for my 16-year-old daughter. It was important for me to keep her in her high school. I could still hardly talk about the loss of my wife.Bruce, the interviewer, was politely empathetic, but he didn't probe any further. He admitted my loss and with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of the interview,Bruce took me to lunch with another person. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. The New York police have 170 horses working in certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed, but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horseshoes. In fact, they need more than 8,000 of them each year. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths. There are only about thirty-five of these blacksmiths in the whole United States. The cost of shoing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars, and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job.A blacksmith's job is not an easy one. The blacksmith must bend over all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight of the horse's leg while he works. Clearly,a blacksmith must be very storng.
