AI began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then.I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning aroundto look at me.I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact,I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see--the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then. The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost-having to study in three schools as a result of family moves.I did not quite know what I was or what I should be.Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me.Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other.I was often sad,and saw no end to" the hard times."My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home.I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives. From my experiences I have learned one important rule:almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up,and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.21、How did the author get to know America?___A.From her relatives.B.From her mother.C.From books and pictures.D.From radio programs.22、For the first two years in New York, the author___.A.often lost her way B.did not think about her futureC.studied in three different schools. D. got on well with her stepfather23、The author believes that___.A.her future will be free from troublesB.it is difficult to learn to become patientC.there are more good things than bad thingsD.good things will happen if one keeps trying.BGoing to the toilet is easy down here on Earth, because gravity pulls your solid and liquid wastes down, away from you. But in the gravity-free environment of space, waste tends to justfloat around.Since the early days of the spaceflight, NASA has learned a lot about what to do with human waste while their astronauts are away first American to be put into space, had to pee inside his spacesuit just before the flight on May 5, 1961.Now, space toilets look similar to the Western style toilets that people use on Earth, However. Instead of flushing, they work like a vacuum cleaner sucking away the astronaut’s waste. When nature calls, astronauts fasten their bodies to the toilet so that they won’t float away. They are held on by a had acros s their legs. While the toilet is in use, it has a continues flow of air blowing in through holes under the seat. This airflow pushes waste toward the bottom of the toilet, drawing it into a bag, holding solid waste, but letting the air through. The urinal works for both men and women. It can be used whether you are sitting on the toilet or standing. The long tube then travels to the waste water tank. There are different ways of treating solid and liquid waste. All solid waste is brought back to Earth for treatment, while liquid waste is thrown out into space from time to time. One astronaut had commented: “There is nothing as beautiful as a uri ne dump at sunset.”24. The passage above is mainly about ________.A. the astronauts’ spaceflight in the early daysB. the agreement of treating liquid waste at sunset.C. the invention of the Western style toilets on the earthD. some ways of dealing with the human waste in outer space25. What does the underlined part “nature calls” really mean?A. The telephone calls from the NASA come.B. The astronauts has intention of going to the toiletC. The astronauts make a call with each other in the space.D. The waste tends to float around the gravity-free environment.26. We can infer from the passage that __________________.A. going to the toilet is easy both in space and on earthB. men astronauts can stay in space linger than the women ones.C. both sold and liquid waste are brought back to earth for treatmentD. scientists are t rying to improve quality of the astronaut’s daily life in space.CThe other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 p m. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.By 9.45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11.00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads . Jane and David left hungry and angry.Their experience suggests that the words an the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6 :30 -8: 30 pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8: 00 pm or 8: 30 pm means possible dinner, but 9: 30 pm and any time thereafter means no food, oat beforehand, roll up late. But this is not always the case. If asked to a students' party at 6: 30 pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive - looking eager is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6.30, she likes to be them, if not on lime, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably closer to student-time than grown-up time. The accepted custom at present is confusing, sometimes annoying, and it often means youmay go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element of surprise.27. Jane and David' s story is used to show that______ .A. party invitations can be confusingB. people should ask for food at partiesC. petty-goers usually get hungry at partiesD. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull28. For some young people, arriving on time for a students' party will probably be considered_______.A. very difficultB. particularly thoughtfulC. friendly and politeD. socially unacceptable29. What is the general idea of the text?A. It' s safe to arrive late just when food is served.B. It' s wise to eat something before going to a party.C. It' s important to follow social rules of party-going.D. It' s necessary to read invitations carefully.DI would recommend uV olunteer Programs in Costa Rica(哥斯达黎加) to anyone. Everyonecan learn something and enjoy their time here if they have the ability to adapt to different circumstances and a sense of adventure.I came to San Ramon---the capital of Costa Rica, hardly knowing any Spanish, so the first thing I did there was to take Spanish courses at Spanish Language School for a week. My family stay was also of great help to my language study, but that experience with the classes gave me a huge jumpstart on the language, which has been extremely valuable.Once in San Ramon, I was fortunate enough to experience several projects with amazing people. I taught Adult English Night Classes, helped at an elementary school, and also went to the Community Center in Bajo. The adult classes are just soawesome because it can be really engaging, social, and fun while being educational. We all learned a lot from each other and became pretty close. The Sabana School was a nice elementary school right by the dorm. The kids were so incredibly nice, even giving me lots of hugs and small gifts. I came at a time when there were many holiday celebrations so there were some scheduling challenges, resulting in me being there to assist English classes a couple of hours in the morning. I decided to go to Bajo in the afternoons. I, like all of the other volunteers, absolutely loved it. This is a place where I felt I was really helping in a more significant way. The kids started to open up more to me the more I was there playing with the kids and helping with the educational programs. The staff and kids are just incredible.Aside from work, we decided on some weekend trips. By the end of my stay I hadexperienced hot volcanic springs in La Fortuna, snorkeling and hiking with incredible wildlife in Puerto Viejo, caving in Nicaragua, and kayaking and night fishing (we ate the fish too) in Playa Hermosa. I also enjoyed dancing, eating, and watching performances during the San Ramon festivals.30. At the movies, we know that if we reach out to touch Tom Cruise, all we will feel is air. But does a baby have this understanding? To see whether babies know objects are solid, T. Bower designed a method for projecting an optical illusion(视觉影像)of a hanging ball. His plan was to first give babies a real ball, one they could reach out and touch , and then to show them the illusion. If they knew that objects are solid and they reached out for the illusion and found empty air, they could be expected to show surprise in their faces and movements. All the 16-to 24- week -old babies tested were surprised when they reached for the illusion and found that the ball was not there.Grown-ups also have a sense of object permanence. We know that if we put a box in a room and lock the door, the box will still be there when we come back. But does a baby realize that a ball that rolls under a chair does not disappear and go to never-never land?Experiments done by Bower suggest that babies develop a sense of object permanence whenthey are about 18 weeks old. In his experiments, Bower used a toy train that went behind a screen. When 16-week-old and 22-week-old babies watched the toy train disappear behind the left side of the screen, they looked to the right, expecting it to reappear. If the experimenter took the train off the table and lifted the screen, all the babies seemed surprised not to see the train. This seems to show that all the babies had a sense of object permanence. But the second part of the experiment showed that this was not really the case. The researcher substituted(替换)a ball for the train when it went behind the screen. The 22-week-old babies seemed surprised and looked back to the left side for the train. But the 16-week -old babies did not seem to notice the switch. Thus, the 16-week-old babies seemed to have a sense of“something permanence, ”while the 22-week-old babies hada sense of object permanence related to a particular object.33.
