e.g: - Do you think I can use your car for one day?- A .A. I’m afraid not.B. No, you can’t.C. I won’t let y ou do that.D. Absolutely not.解析:此题第一说话人向对方提出请求“想借车一用”,对方如果不能答应,应该委婉地表示拒绝。

因此选A。

礼貌原则还表现在拒绝请求的方式上:一种是委婉回绝,上面的例子“I’m afraid not”就是这种情况;另一种是先表同意,然后用“but”转折,表达不同意的意思。

可以这样说:I’d like/ love to, bu t…That’s a good idea, but…2. 利他原则在日常交际中,英语国家形成一种习俗,要尽可能为对方提供帮助和方便; 对别人遇到的好事/成功表示高兴; 坏事表示难过/惋惜,因此在交际用语中也要体现出来这种倾向。

e.g: - I am going to the City Hall, can you tell me how to get there, madam?- D .A. No, you don’t knowB. I don’t know.C. Yes, you will.D. Sorry, I am new here too. But you can ask the policeman over there.解析:此题第一说话人在向对方问路,按照利他原则,应尽可能为对方提供帮助。

所以选D,首先表示歉意,自己也不知道,同时给出一些有帮助的建议。

Twenty-eight-year-old Marissa Parry was returning home from her job as manager of a bar. She parked her car in a lot next to the local railroad station, locked the door, and started to walk the 100 feet to the entrance of her apartment. The entrance to the apartment is at the rear of the building as the front of the building contains small stores. The neighborhood was covered in a sleeping darkness.Miss Parry noticed a man at the far end of the lot, near a seven-storey apartment house. She halted, then, nervously, she headed up the street, where there is a police call box. She got as far as a street l ight in front of a bookshop, before the man grabbed her. She screamed, “Oh, my God, he stabbed me! Please help me!”. Lights went on in the ten-storey apartment house across the street. Windows were opened and voices spoke in the early-morning stillness. From one the upper windows in the apartment house, a man called down: “Let the girl alone!” The man looked up at him, shrugged(耸肩), and walked down the street toward a white car. Miss Parry struggled to her feet.Lights went on. The man returned to Miss Parry, stabbed her again. Miss Parry called out, “I‟m dying! I‟m dying!” windows were open again and lights went on in many ap artments. The man got into the car and drove away. Miss Parry staggered to her feet, and at the time a city bus passed. The man returned. By then, Miss Parry had crawled(爬行) to the back of the building where doors to the apartment house held out hope for afety. The killer found her at the second door, lying on the floor at the foot of the stairs. He stabbed her again—killing her.Fifteen minutes later, the police received their first call, from a man who was a neighbor of Miss Parry. In two minutes they were at the scene. The neighbor, a 70-year-old woman, and another woman were the only persons on the street. Nobody else came forward. The man explained that he had called the police after much thought. He had phoned a friend for advice and then he had gon e to the apartment of the elderly woman to get her to make the call. “I didn‟t want to get involved,” he told the police.1. When happen the murdering in proper neighborhood? ________A. at duskB. at noonC. at nightD. at dawn2. Why did Miss Parry head up the street when she found a man at the far end of the lot? ________A. calling the policeB. asking the help from the familyC. asking the help from the neighborsD. running away the scene3. Does the man calling the police immediately the killing took place? ________A. YesB. NoC. The passage doesn‟t mention it4. How many times did the man stab Miss Parry throughout the accident? ________A. twoB. threeC. fourD. five5. The author expresses the emotion of ________ to the killing case.A. sympathyB. indignationC. curiosityD. indifferencePassage BI‟m usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today‟s children are significantly mor e anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.Why are America‟s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation—brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things—and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.Given that we can‟t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope. At the top of the list is nurturing (培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.Limit the amount of virtual (虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It‟s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn‟t have to ruin your life.6. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people‟s state of mind are ________.A. surprisingB. confusionC. illogicalD. questionable7. What does the author mean when he says, “we can‟t turn the clock back” (Line 1, Para. 3)?A. It‟s impossible to slow down the pace of change.B. The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.C. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.D. It‟s impossible to forget the past.8. According to an analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill50 years ago ________.A. were less isolated physicallyB. were probably less self-centeredC. probably suffered less from anxietyD. were considered less individualistic9. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is ________.A. to provide them with a safer environmentB. to lower their expectations for themC. to get them more involved sociallyD. to set a good model for them to follow10. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?A. Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be coped with.B. Children‟s anxiety has been enormously exaggerated.C. Children‟s anxiety can be eliminated with more parental care.D. Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help children become mature.Passage CIt was clearly the headmaster himself that opened the door. He was short and fat, with a sandy-colored moustache, a wrinkled forehead and hardly any hair. He looked at me with an air of surpris ed disapproval, as a colonel might look at a private whose bootlaces were undone. …Ah, yes. You‟d better come inside,‟ he grunted. The narrow, sunless hall smelled unpleasantly of stale cabbage; the walls were dirty with ink marks; it was all silent. …You‟d better sit down,‟ he said, and proceeded to ask me a number of questions: what subjects I had taken in my General School Certificate; how old I was; what games I played; then fixing me suddenly with his bloodshot eyes, he asked me whether I thought games were a vital part of a boy‟s education. I mumble something about not attaching too much importance to them. He grunted. I had said the wrong thing. The headmaster and I obviously had very little in common. The school was made up of one class of twenty-four boys, ranging in age from seven to thirteen. I should have to teach all subjects except art, which he taught himself. Football and cricket were played in the Park, a mile away on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. The teaching set up filled me with fear. I should have to divide the class into three groups and teach them in turn at three different levels; and I was dismayed at the thought of teaching algebra and geometry — two subjects at which I had been completely incompetent at school. Worse perhaps was the idea of Saturday afternoon cricket; most of my friends would be enjoying leisure at that time.I said shyly, …What would my salary be?‟ …Twelve pounds a week plus lunch.‟ Before I could protest, he got to his feet. He said, …Now, you‟d better meet my wife. She is the one who really runs the school.‟ This was the last straw. I was very young: the prospect of working under a woman constituted the ultimate indignity.11. The headmaster looked at the author disapprovingly ________ .A. because the latter had left his bootlaces undoneB. because the latter looked too nervousC. because the latter didn‟t show due respectD. as an officer look at a carelessly dressed soldier12. After the author was asked a number of questions, he concluded that the headmaster _______ .A. didn‟t like to play the same gamesB. believed the games was very key to a boy‟s educationC. attached great importance to artD. was a game fan13. The idea of Saturday afternoon cricket was even more discouraging because ________ .A. he had to walk a mile to get to the cricket fieldB. he wasn‟t good at playing cricketC. most of his friends would be free at that timeD. he didn‟t like to play little boys in public14. If the author had had a chance, he would have protested _________ .A. at the term offered by the headmasterB. about meeting the headmaster‟s wifeC. against having lunch at schoolD. about playing cricket on weekends15. We can infer that the author ________ at the end of the story.A. coul dn‟t decide whether he should accept the job or notB. had no choice but to accept itC. refused the job though he needed itD. accepted the job though he didn‟t like it 1-5 D C BBB 6-10 D B C C A 11-15 D B C A CⅣ. P a r t O n e R e a d i n g C o m p r e h e n s i o nDirections: There are 8 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet by blackening the letter.Passage 1When we talk about intelligence we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the a\ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows to do.For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can do, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it all works out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook in life, a special feeling about life, and a special way of how he fits into it.If you look at children, you’ll see a great difference between what we call “bright”children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life—he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.1. According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to .A) work by oneself B) do well in any situationC) know what is right and wrong D) adapt oneself to a new situation2. In a new situation, an intelligent personA) knows more about what might happen to himB) is well-prepared for his actionC) pays greater attention to the situationD) completely ignores himself3. If an intelligent person failed, he wouldA) feel ashamed about the failureB) learn from his experiencesC) find out what he can’t doD) make sure what’s wrong with his outlook in life4. An intelligent childA) learns more about himselfB) shows interest in things around himC) studies everything that may be interestingD) looks down upon unintelligent children5. Why does an unintelligent child seem to have a wall between him and life in general?A) Because he can hardly see the outside worldB) Because life is far away from himC) Because he knows nothing about life in generalD) Because he has little interest in things around himselfPassage 2When I begin to look back on all friends whom I have had, I quickly came to the conclusion that Jerry wasthe most important and had the greatest effect upon my life. His family moved to my block when I was only 10. Jerry was 15 at the time, but the fact that he was so much older than me seemed to make no difference to him. I was very glad that ht liked me. We took long walks together, on which he would tell me stories he had heard from TV and radio programs. But as months went by, a change came into our friendship. Jerry almost stopped coming by the house, and every time I went to his house or telephoned, he put me off with some excuses such as “I’m studying now” or “I’ve got some jobs to do for Mum”. When we passed on the street, he would still give me a warm smile and friendly wave with a “Hi, kid”, but he would hardly ever stop to talk. Finally I realized that he was no longer interested in me and that his taste hand changed. I noticed him with a girl once n a while and several times saw him going out in his family’s car on a Friday or Saturday night. I simply couldn’t understand what was so great about girls and parties. But I was hurt when he finally made me know that our friendship was at an end. Of course he didn’t really meant to hurt me, but it was a long time before I realized that it was an age problem that caused the break. There were a world of differences between the ideas and interests of a 17-year-old and a 12-year-old. Now that I’m over sixteen myself, I realized this, and the hurt I got then has become happy memories of the good times we were once together. I wonder if millions of other boys and girls have had a similar experience.1. When the writer and Jerry first met, Jerry was .A) 10 years old B) 5 years older than the writerC) of the same age as the writer D) the writer’s classmate2. Their friendship lasted forA) a few years B) a few weeks C) a few months D) a few hours3. Jerry stopped playing with the writer becauseA) the writer had changed B) he was busy with his studyC) he has some jobs to do D) he was not interested in the writer4. When a change came in their friendship, the writerA) accepted it at once B) couldn’t understand his friend for a long timeC) stopped visiting his friend D) started going to parties with girls5. The main idea of the passage is thatA) the age difference plays a part in friendshipB) friendship is the most important thing for childrenC) many boys and girls have a similar experience as the writerD) “friendship are made in wine and tested in tears”Passage 3Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer”.The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It did n’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write, I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering: What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and anyone with adream must learn to live there.1. The passage is meant toA) warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experienceB) advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC) show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD) encourage young people to pursue a writing career2. What can be concluded from the passage?A) Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewardingB) A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effortsC) Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolationD) The chances for writer to become successful are small3. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?A) He wasn’t able to produce a single book.B) He hadn’t seen aching for the better.C) He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.D) He thought that he lacked imagination4. “…people who die wondering: What if?” (Line 4, Para.3) refers to “thoseA) who think too much of the dark side of lifeB) who regret giving up their career halfwayC) who think a lot without making a decisionD) who are full of imagination even upon death5. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers toA) the wonderland one often dreams aboutB) the bright future that one is looking forward toC) the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reachedD) a world that exists only in one’s imaginationPassage 4It is, everyone agrees, a huge task that the child performs when he learns to speak, and the fact that he does so in so short a period of time challenges explanation.Language learning begins with listening. Individual children vary greatly in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey”spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word obey is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will ask questions by gestures and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to trace the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves out as particularly indicative of delight, distress, sociability, and so on. But since these cannot be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new sounds to their repertoire. This self-imitation leads on to deliberate imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.1. By “…challenges explanation” (Line 2, Para. 1) the author means thatA) no explanation has been made up till nowB) it’s no easy job to provide an adequate explanationC) no explanation is necessary for such an obvious phenomenonD) it’s high time that an explanation was provided2. The third paragraph is mainly aboutA) the development of babies’ early forms of languageB) the difficulties of babies in learning to speak.C) babies’ strong desire to communicateD) babies’ intention to communicate3. The author’s purpose in writing the second paragraph is to show that childrenA) usually obey without asking questionsB) are passive in the process of learning to speakC) are born cooperativeD) learn to speak by listening4. From the passage we learn thatA) early starters can learn to speak within only six monthsB) children show a strong desire to communicate by making noisesC) imitation plays an important role in learning to speakD) children have various difficulties in learning to speak5. The best title for this passage would beA) How Babies Learn to Speak B) Early Forms of LanguageC) A Huge Task for Children D) Noise Making and Language LearningPassage 5It is not often realized that women held a high place in southern European societies in the 10th and 11th centuries. As a wife, the woman was protected by the setting up of a dowry. Admittedly, the purpose of this was to protect her against the risk of desertion, but in reality its function in the social and family life of the time was much more important. The dowry was the wife’s right to receive a tenth of all her husband’s property. The wife had the right to withhold consent, in all transactions the husband would make, and more than just a right; the documents show that she enjoyed a real power of decision, equal to that of her husband. In no case do the documents indicate any degree of difference in the legal status of husband and wife. The wife shared in the management of her husband’s personal property, but the opposite was not always true. Women seemed perfectly prepared to defend their own inheritance against husbands who tried to exceed their rights, and on occasion they showed a fine fighting spirit. A case in point is that of Maria Vivas. Having agreed with her husband Miro to sell a field she had inherited, for the needs of the household, she insisted on compensation. None being offered, she succeeded in dragging her husband to the scribe to have a contract duly drawn up assigning her a piece of land fro Miro’s personal inheritance. The unfortunate husband was obliged to agree, as the contract says, “for the sake of peace.” Either through the dowry or through being hot-tempered, the wife knew how to win herself, with the context of the family, a powerful economic position.1. Originally, the purpose of a dowry is to .A) give a woman the right to receive all her husband’s propertyB) help a woman to enjoy a higher position in the familyC) protect a woman against the risk of desertionD) both A and C2. According to the passage, the legal status of the wife in marriage was ______.A) higher than that of a single woman B) higher than that of her husbandC) lower than that of her husband D) the same as that of her husband3. Why does the author give us the example of Maria Vivas?A) To show that the wife shared in the management of her husband’s personal propertyB) To show that the wife can defend her own inheritanceC) To prove that women have powerful positionD) To illustrate how women win their property4. The compensation Maria Vivas got for the field is ______.A) some of the land Miro had inherited B) a tenth of Miro’s landC) money for household expenses D) money form Miro’s inheritance5. The author’s attitude towards Maria Vivas is ______.A) sympathetic B) disapprovalC) indifferent D) objectivePassage 6Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. The best title for this passage would beA) How Babies Learn to Speak B) Early Forms of LanguageC) A Huge Task for Children D) Noise Making and Language LearningPassage 8Dam is a barrier constructed across a stream or river to impound water and raise its level. The most common reasons for building dams are to concentrate the natural fall of a river at a given site, thus making it possible to generate electricity; to direct water from rivers into canals and irrigation and water-supply systems; to increase river depths for navigational purposes; to control water flow during times of flood and drought; andto create artificial lakes for recreational use. Many dams fulfill several of these functions. In the United States the network of dams under the Tennessee Valley Authority is an outstanding example of a multipurpose dam development. The first dam of which record exists was built about 4000 BC to divert the Nile in Egypt in order to provide a site for the city of Memphis. Many ancient earth dams, including a number built by the Babylonians, were part of elaborate irrigation systems that transformed unproductive regions into fertile plains capable of supporting large populations. Because of the ravages of periodic floods, very few dams more than a century old are still standing. The construction of virtually indestructible dams of appreciable height and storage capacity became possible after the development of Portland cement concrete and the mechanization of earth-moving and materials-handling equipment.Controlling and using water by means of dams profoundly affects the economic prospects of vast areas. One of the first stages in the progress of developing countries usually involves gaining the ability to use water for power generation, agriculture, and fllld protection.1. What is the main idea of this passage?A) To tell the main function of dams.B) To date the existence of the first dam.C) To emphasize the economic effects of dam.D) To give a brief introduction to dam.2. Which of the following is not mentioned as one the common reasons for building dams?A) People build dams to generate electricityB) Dams are used to control water flow in time of flood and droughtC) People build dams to divert riversD) Dams serve as part of the irrigation system.3. Many ancient dams mainly served the need to ______.A) generate electricity B) create artificial lakes for recreational useC) irrigate fields D) protect people from the suffering of floods5. According to the passage, when did the construction of virtually indestructible dams become possible?A) After many ancient earth dams were destroyedB) Not until the development of cement concrete and earth moving machinesC) About 4000 BC.D) Before the turn of last century.Part Two Vocabulary and StructureDirections: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. 英译汉(5句)来自Passage A, Passage B阅读理解复习题Passage 1Long, long ago there was no zero. To write the number sixty-three people wrote 63. To write six hundred and three, people wrote 63. The space between six and three was there to mean." not any "tens. Sometimes people did not remember the space. It was hard to see and read.Later people used a dot to hold the space. Six hundred andthree looked like this 6.3. But the dot was hard to see. So people put a circle around it like this 6⊙3. Then people could see the dot. They remembered the space. At last, only the circle around the dot was used. It was like a zero. This is one story of how the zero came to be used. Now zero has many important uses. Zero tells how many. Can you tell some other ways of using zero?1. Long, l ong ago people didn’t know how to ________.A. writeB. write zeroC. write numbersD. write sixty-three2. People used circles ________.A. to remember waysB. to remember numbersC. not to forget the spaceD. to mean nothing5. The story tells us ________.A. how zero came to be usedB. how to write zeroC. what’s the use of zeroD. that zero means a dot, a circle or spacePassage 2If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Y et many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.1. Someone can't have a good memory if ________.A. he can't read or writeB. his parents haven't a good memoryC. he doesn't make good use of his memoryD. he doesn't use his arms or legs for some time2. If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________.A. they will become thinB. they will become weakC. they begin to ache all overD. you can't use them any more3. Which of the following statements is true?A. Y our memory needs chance for practice.B. A good memory is inherited from parents.C. Y our memory works in the different ways as your arms or legs.D. Don't learn to read and write if you want to have a good memory.4. Few people know that if someone has a poor memory it is ________.A. his own faultB. his parents' faultC. his teachers' faultD. his friends' fault5. The writer wants to tell us ________.A. how to read and write wellB. how to have a good memoryC. how to use our arms or legs betterD. how to learn from the people who can't read or writePassage 3A foreigner's first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands(任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be servedand get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.Y ou also find drivers will be abrupt and people will push past you. Y ou will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else "wasting" it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some re-turnbe this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a caféor coffee house. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.1. Which of the following statements is wrong?A. Americans seem to be always under pressure.B. Americans attach less importance to patience.C. Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D. Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.2. In t he fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means ________?A. a less important thingB. a first concernC. a good businessD. an attractive gift3. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is ________.A. criticalB. ironicalC. appreciativeD. objectivePassage 4In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call duringsleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite.A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence. (260 words)1. What is the main idea of this passage?A. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B. The role of time in social life over the world.C. Passage 8Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary(周年纪念)of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug(拥抱), Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Br itons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys(调查)show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever th e answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.1. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is ________.A. friendlyB. impoliteC. brotherlyD. a mixture of love and hate2. The war in Iraq does ________ to the relationship between France and Britain.A. goodB. harmC. neither good nor harmD. both good and harm3. What does the last sentence mean?A. As long as the English Channel exists, no further disagreement will form between France and Britain.B. The English Channel can prevent anything unfriendly happening in both France and Britain.C. France and Britain are near neighbors, and this will help balance the relationship between them.D. The English Channel is the largest enemy between France and Britain.Passage 9When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean and may feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth rises. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves in. Y ou feel the wind, which makes you cool.Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, "Why is the ocean full of salt?" scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, "What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get more salty every year." Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do not have and we are curious.1.
