No.2 Gone with the Wind (1939)《
No.3 Random Harvest (1942)《
No.4 Ghost (1990)《
No.5 La Grande vadrouille (1966)《
No.6 Suspicion (1941) 《
No.7 The Great Waltz (1938)《
No.8 All About Eve (1950)《
Waterloo Bridge (魂断蓝桥)

Katy---Character Analysis on Waterloo BridgeAbstract:Friendship is like a plant of slow growth, and between friends all is common. We may know not whether our names will be immortal; but our friendship will.In the hours of distress and miser, the eyes of every mortal man turn to friendship; in the hour of gladness and conviviality, what is our want? It is friendship. When the heart overflows with gratitude, or with any other sweet and sacred sentiment, what is the world to which it would give utterance? That is a friend.Key Words: Waterloo Bridge, Katy, friendshipThe Waterloo Bridge as a very classic film is usually famous for its beautiful love and the cruel world war. Almost everyone is touched and shocked in Myra and Roy’s encounter, love, marry and then depart. We are attracted by the beautiful song, the romantic love; on the other hand, we are depressed on their depart, the misfortune between them; we hate the war, it destroy the love between Myra and Roy, and it also destroys our dreams on the happy ending. What’s more, maybe someone is attracted by their elegant dancing; their beautiful costume, and etc. While others concentrate on these wonderful and terrific things, I am touched by a girl—Katy, Myra’s friend, and the only friend, the only true friend. She is forgotten by the world because of the leading roles fame. Maybe she is not beautiful as Myra, but she is brave; maybe she is not so lucky as Myra, for she hasn’t met a person who loves her like the way Roy treats Myra; or maybe she also wants to get marry, and be a good woman, but for her friendship, she steps into a way, a long way, which can never comes back. She just like a green leaf in this film, and inlays in the film, present her special charming; give us a different sight of beauty. So I will analysis this special beauty in following aspects.First, as a very common woman, she is so different in my perspective. Katy is frank, strong, outspoken and justice. When Myra is scolded and dismissed by the theatre’sboss for she went to the railway station to meet Roy, Katy stands out and scolds the lady, to point out her unkindness and rudeness, as result, they are dismissed b the Ballet Theater. Here, her angry expressions and fairly words show us her personification. Although they are jobless, she does not negative as Myra, and she even always comforts Myra to believe that this is a beginning of new life. However, the reality is cruel, she has to make a living, for herself and especially for Myra, maybe someone wants to say that they are not mature and wise to make the lady angry, but for me, I think, this is what her firmly friendship makes her do that.Second, due to the difficult, somewhat miserable life, she has to make a living on a informal way, but she still lives strongly. She pays much on their friendship. I still remember the dialogue which Myra found what she is doing to make money, I do think that no one cannot be touched and feels miserable. When Myra doubted “Kitty, we've never got a job at all, we never did have one.”“How we've been living?” Katy is out of her wits in panic, then says “What differences make as long as we live!” then, the Myra has the right answer, she knows that all Katy’s action is just for her, for her health, but Myra does not have the courage to live, while, Katy encourages her “We're young, and it's... it's good to live! Even the life that I am living now...”With these words, she turns back, and restrict herself, she must to be strong, she must help Myra to get out the misery, and she just unfold her hands and smile in a unusual way, we can touch that she has no choice but to be a “hooker”, here I do not regard her as a general hooker. Of course, she is different and noble. Although Katy does cry loudly, but I can feel that she is crying every minute in her heart. It also makes me miserable. In that age, during the World War, although England was a developed country, the social status of women is extremely low, and Katy is just a dancer, no status, no knowledge, it seems impossible for her to find a job. When the money used out, the miserable life broke all her hopes, therefore. When facing the cruel reality , and for Myra’s happiness, their loyal friendship, she gave up the most valuable self-respect and purity, degenerated to be a petty hooker. Maybe in our perspectives, these really are the sadness to be a woman, but form the angle of humanity, she is a woman who is deserved to be respected, for her sacrifice is to save a marriage, a noble, pure, andprecious love. To some degree, her sacrifice is beyond the underline of love and marriage. In the movie, the loyalty which Roy gives Myra can be the proof that the sacrifices of Katy are deserved. And she proves us that there exists true love in the world. No matter how the out-world argues about the love of the two persons, they still love and their love will continue till forever. While in the end of the movie, we can see the purity of love from the death of Myra, and on the other hand, we can also say that it reveals the kind-hearted of Katy and their sincere friendship. What’s more, Katy is not the main character, but she plays a great role in the movie and makes a big difference for the story line. If there is no Katy, maybe Myra and Roy wouldn’t meet each other again in the coffee shop, and then the story wouldn’t continue. Thus, from this angle, I suppose the director may make efforts on this role, we also can figure out that Katy is somewhat necessary for the story. Besides, Katy is also a foil to the sincere love between Roy and Myra, in this way; it also reveals the theme of the movie. Above all, Katy adds the essential elements to the movie. At last, I also want to talk about her limits and disadvantages. First, as a woman in the capital society, and during the world war, the traditional concepts of women are still present on Katy---value the chastity. As Myra thinks she can never match with Roy, Katy also thinks she will never find her true love; and I think the conservative limits are the killer towards these two poor women. Second, as a woman, Katy’s attitudes towards life are limited and narrow. She always believes that the happiness of life is to find a good husband, so as she looks the love between Roy and Myra. Third, she is in contradiction, she wants to pursue a better life but still obeys to the hooker’s life, for her narrow sight leads that she cannot see her bright future, therefore, she cannot find her true love. Maybe her true love is by her side, but she cannot feel or believe that. The old hooker which stands in the bridge tells us this truth. That is really a miserable reality, no matter before, or nowadays, even in the future, I suppose, the human beings---especially the women, who want to break this concept seems impossible. So I think this the sorrow of all the women not only Katy, for this world there still exist Male Chauvinism①,Hierarchy②, Traditional Values and etc. There is a really long and difficult road to the liberation of humanity. These are all for my analysis on Katy, she is in my brain and heart deeply, and gradually clear. No matter praise or criticize, are both our understanding on that age’s women. Although she is just a piece of green leaf in the movie, I think she deserves us to read in the whole of our life.(1) Male Chauvinism: An activity indicative of belief in the superiority of men over women, that is, if you accuse a man of male chauvinism, you disapprove of him because his beliefs and behavior show that he thinks men are naturally superior to women.N-UNCOUNT disapproval(2) Hierarchy: a system of organizing people into different ranks or levels of importance, for example in society or in a company.(3)/question/64035299.html?fr=qrl&cid=187&index=3&fr2= query(4) Wikipedia。

This is the Love Story, Just Say YesBy: Mia"Liang and Zhu" is a classical love story in China, moved so many people. It embodies a concentrated reflection of Chinese people love in traditions that the children, especially daughters, ought to accept the parents' orders and matchmaker's help to marry someone strange. Many love stories about free love in ancient age mostly ended in tragedy, so the magic ending that heroes cannot company each other while alive would rather die together and love each other as butterflies supernaturally. In the other side of the earth, "Waterloo Bridge" also influenced the generations as a "love Bible". It conveys a message that love can forever, lies in the heart, not the body. The heroine is reduced to a prostitute, but in people's mind, she is still cute and virtuous. However, in the end, she was gone in the street alive in the mind of the hero. Both the stories are impressive and taken into hearts of peoples, but it makes sense that wherever we are in and whenever we are in, the shackles of the social environment and the traditional view of the times seems always to be around us, and likes an impossible mission to rid of. Either Butterflies Love or Waterloo Bridge, the heroes of the story both sacrificed their true love for the sake of the "perfect" fame or honor of the family. We are not troubled by the parents' orders and the matchmaker's help any more, whereas often confused and broke up for some unnecessary misunderstanding and trivial conflicts; our love finally are able to be here without worries about the hardship in wars or responsibilities unable to shirk, whereas defeated by gossips from some people, even a stranger. Then endlessly complaining or contemplating alone is so unwise. If this is the love, baby, just say yes.。

The movie "Waterloo Bridge" is a classic love storythat has touched the hearts of many. The story follows the lives of Myra and Roy, two lovers who meet during World War I. Their love is tested when Roy is sent to fight in the war, and Myra is left alone in London. The movie is a beautiful portrayal of the sacrifices that people make for love. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is when Myra and Roy meet on Waterloo Bridge after he returns from the war. The scene is filled with emotion as they embrace each other, and Myra realizes that Roy has lost his memory of her. This scene is a perfect example of how love can overcome even the most difficult obstacles.Another aspect of the movie that I appreciate is the attention to detail in the set design and costumes. Themovie is set during the 1910s, and the filmmakers did an excellent job of recreating the time period. The costumes are beautiful, and the set design is intricate, adding to the overall beauty of the film.Overall, "Waterloo Bridge" is a must-watch movie for anyone who loves a good love story. The movie is a timeless classic that has stood the test of time.

The above synopsis is familiar to those who have seen A Streetcar Named Desire, for which Leigh won her second Oscar for Best Actress in 1952. But the same description applies equally to her first film made after the seminal Gone With the Wind (1939), the largest grossing film for many decades, and for which she had received her first Best Actress Oscar.Lovely, innocent Myra (Vivien Leigh) is a ballet dancer at a touring company run by humorless taskmaster Madame Kirowa (Maria Ouspenskaya). It is London during World War I, and Myra falls for a privileged, dashing, and impossibly nice military officer while seeking shelter during an air raid. He's Captain Cronin (Robert Taylor), and the feeling is mutual. But Cronin's wealthy, snobbish family, led by his matron mother (Lucile Watson) and curmudgeon uncle (C. Aubrey Smith), don't look kindly towards the curious, unconnected Myra. But if they're not sure about her now, just wait until they find out what she's been doing on Waterloo Bridge. Myra and her headstrong roommate Kitty (Virginia Field) have been fired from the ballet for insubordination, and to make ends meet...There's no need to finish the sentence, because such words were apparently unspeakable in 1940. The strict production code may have let Clark Gable shock audiences the year before by telling Leigh, "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn!" But they weren't going to let anyone on the set of Waterloo Bridge tell Leigh that she is a prostitute. Not directly, at least. How different it all was in 1931, when Frankenstein director James Whale filmed the original version of Waterloo Bridge. In that racy (and more realistic) version, Myra was a prostitute before she met Cronin. The film was also closer to the original play by Robert E. Sherwood, who during his career would win the Pulitzer Prize on four separate occasions. (Sherwood also wrote the scripts for two of my favorite films, Rebecca and The Best Years of Our Lives.)The production code came into being during 1934, and ruled Hollywood until films like Double Indemnity and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (both from 1944) began to erode it. But the subtlety forced onto the script by the code actually suited both Leigh and Taylor, and gave their characters a gracefulness that would not be possible during a more liberal Hollywood era.The tragedy that befalls Myra is similar to that of Leigh's character in another of her famous films, Anna Karenina (1948). The portents of doom are laid out early in the film, which is told largely in flashback. This technique adds to the suspense. We may know that the lovers are to be parted, but we don't know how or when. The story and direction yanks us around with endless raised and dashed hopes, and seemingly permanent separations that prove fleeting. Taylor and Leigh are so painfully nice throughout that you can't help but feel sorry for them. Some will find it to be a 'four hanky' film, but such reactions are highly personal. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) is the real weeper from the 1940s.1940 was a busy year for Vivien Leigh. She married noted thespian Laurence Olivier later that same year, after both had obtained divorces from their previous spouses. They did manage to make a few films together, but their best films of the era were made apart. Certainly, Olivier is better known for Rebecca and Wuthering Heights than for 21 Days and That Hamilton Woman, the latter two with Leigh co-starring.Waterloo Bridge was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Cinematography (Joseph Ruttenberg) and Best Original Score (Herbert Stothart). It would be remade again as Gaby (1956) starring a real life dancer, Leslie Caron.。
