In November, the Ministry of Agriculture gave safety certificates for the production of two types of GM rice and one type of GM corn in China. The announcement caused great debate on the Internet. In a recent survey conducted by China Daily and , more than 85 percent of respondents were worried about the potential health hazards of GM food. Several forums against GM food even posted messages requesting signatures from netizens against the commercialization of GM rice, using the slogan “Saving our children”.“If the world has not reached a consensus on GM food safety, it is too proactive and risky to commercialize GM crops on a la rge scale,” said Zheng Fengtian, vice-dean of the Rural and Agricultural Development Institute at Renmin University of China. However, supporters of GM crops have argued there is no clear evidence that GM crops pose safety risks to either people or the environment.Wu Yongning, a food safety specialist from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said current studies have not proven GM food is harmful to consumers’ health. “I am not ruling out all possible risks, but the risks of GM food are no greater than those of traditional ones, given the heavy use of pesticides in growing traditional food,” he added.According to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Application (ISAAA), about 224,000 tons of pesticide was saved during the decade between 1996 to 2006, thanks to the expansion of GM planting.Another benefit of GM food is its amazing yields. Huang Dafang, director of the Biotechnology Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that using GM technology would help the country achieve the target of increasing grain output by 50 million tons between 2009 and 2020.GM soybeans are already widely consumed in China, as well as in the United States. Will GM rice be next? While scientists and social activists are taking their sides, Yuan Longping, “father of hybrid rice” and China’s top agricultural scientist, was neutral on GM food. “We shouldn’t dismiss GM food just like that, some GM foods are safe”, said Yuan, “I would like to volunteer to test GM rice”.Extensive reading AScientists have found a gene that will allow rice to survive longer in rice paddies that are under water. They hope their discovery will mean the crops will last longer in regions that are regularly flooded. They also hope they will get bumper harvests. This is good news for the millions of people who suffer from food shortages because of heavy rains. The research is from teams from the University of California and the International Rice Research Institute. Their findings have been published in the science journal Nature.France's government on Wednesday asked a health watchdog to carry out a probe, possibly leading to EU suspension of a genetically-modified corn, after a study in rats linked the grain to cancer. Another concern is that crop plants engineered for herbicide tolerance and weeds will cross-breed, resulting in the transfer of the herbicide resistance genes from the crops into the weeds.Genetically-modified foods have the potential to solve many of the world's hunger and malnutrition problems, and to help preserve the environment by increasing yield and reducing reliance upon chemical pesticides. Yet there are many challenges ahead for governments, especially in the areas of safety testing, regulation, international policy and food labeling. However, we must proceed with caution to avoid causing unintended harm to human health and the environment as a result of our enthusiasm for this powerful technology.Frank has a very positive attitude towards science and views its purpose as making new developments that improve the quality of life. He believes that GM food could have far reaching impacts on the world food economy and have the potential to bring both benefits, such as improving the nutritional content of food, and risks, such as impacting on farmers’ livelihoods.Extensive reading BThe researchers believe the new GM milk is a healthy alternative to milk powder, which many infant nutritionists say is not so good for babies. Researcher Professor Ning Li said it would be as safe as milk from ordinary dairy cows. He believes it will be very popular, saying: “The milk tastes stronger than normal milk.” He said: “There are 1.5 billion people in the world who don't get enough to eat. It's our duty to develop science and technology, not to hold it back.”Extensive testing of GM foods may be required to avoid the possibility of harm to consumers with food allergies(过敏).They argued against the claim that GM food is unnatural, viewing it as an extension of evolving scientific and agricultural practices. The potential risks of GM food were recognised but it was claimed that these were outweighed by the benefits.Christine, who is very interested in food and believes there is a very strong linkbetween food and health, th inks that GM food is “not right‟ because it is unnatural and “against the laws of nature‟. She thinks that the human body is not suited to GM food and that eating it could have a direct negative impact on health. The European Union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animal cloning for food production, while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring of clones from the United States and elsewhere. "Food from cloned animals is safe. In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare," EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.。
