There's also this spot called the Meadow that's basically a big grassy area wherestudents can relax, play sports, or even go swimming in the river that runs through it. How cool is that?Then there's Magdalen College which has these stunning medieval buildings made of golden-colored stone. It also has one of the most beautiful gardens in Oxford, with flowers everywhere and cute little bridges over the rivers that run through it. Every May they have a special day where the choir sings from the top of the tower at 6am. I'd love to experience that!New College is another really neat one. Its big claim to fame is having this huge medieval bell tower and bell that are just iconic parts of Oxford. Can you imagine if your college dormitory was in a building that old? You'd feel like you traveled back in time every day when you went to class. They also have a beautiful cloister (which is kind of like a covered outdoor hallway area) that's something like 600 years old. Some of the most famous ones are Christ Church, Merton College, University College, Balliol College, and New College. The dining hall at Christ Church is huuuuuge and looks like something out of Harry Potter with these awesome wooden tables and benches. That's like ancient times! Merton has these courtyards and gardens that are just beautiful from the pictures I've seen. And get this - Merton was a trailblazer because it helped create the idea of having different little residences for students, which became the college system used today!University College is known just as "Univ" for short. It's possibly the very oldest college, founded way back in 1249! Univ has a pretty neat coat of arms with two ravens on it. It also has some of the oldest college buildings that are still standing and used today after all these centuries. Crazy to think about students studying there hundreds of years ago!Balliol College was established in 1263 and was one of the very first colleges ever created for Oxford students. It has an awesome old medieval dining hall and libraries. Balliol was alsoan early college that started admitting students regardless of their financial situation or background, which was pretty progressive for the time. Good for them!New College is kind of a funny name since it's definitely not the newest college at Oxford anymore! It was founded in 1379, making it over 600 years old. Despite the name, it's actually one of the oldest colleges. New has a big fancy bell tower and cloisters that make it look beautiful and almost cathedral-like from the outside.Those are just a few examples but there are literally so many other colleges - each with its own long history, cool buildings, traditions, and claim to fame. Like Magdalen College has an amazing old bell tower, while Exeter College has this pastoral garden setting. Then there's the Queen's College, St. John's College, Oriel College, and like a gazillion more!Each college operates pretty independently from the others in many ways, making its own rules and doing its own thing. But at the same time, they all make up parts of the larger University of Oxford as a whole. It's kind of a confusing system but that's part of what makes Oxford so unique compared to other universities.At most colleges, all the students, faculty, staff and alums are deeply proud and protective of their particular college's history, reputation, and identity.
