第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

April 03, 2016 Dear Sir / Madam,

Over the past 6 months, the service from the garbage collection truck has been very disappointing. We have complained to the truck driver, but he has done very little to solve the

problems. Therefore, I am writing directly to your department to request your help.

Basically, there are two problems. The first is that the truck never follows the correct time schedule. Your notice says that garbage will be collected in our area from Monday to Friday at 6 p.m., but the truck always either arrives too early or too late. It has been as much as 15 minutes early and 25 minutes late. The second problem, which is more serious, is that the truck moves off too quickly. I have seen people running after the moving vehicle almost every time, making a disaster very likely. What if the person running were pregnant, disabled, or elderly?

As I mentioned at the beginning, we did express our concerns to the driver. The first time we spoke to him, he was very kind. He explained very patiently that the department was trying to make a better time schedule. After that, he just started ignoring us. Honestly speaking, I felt this was very rude of him and unprofessional.

If these problems continue, I am worried that residents will start dropping their trash on the corner of the street. Therefore, for both the safety and health of everybody, I hope that you will look into this matter as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Tsai, Chia-wen

tsai.ch@https://www.360docs.net/doc/1d11951213.html,

Jenny, a girl of five years old, lived in Houston, Texas. Like many other children of the same age, she would use a stool(凳子) to help her reach the bathroom sink (洗手池). However, the plastic stool was not firmly placed and made the small bathroom untidy. After learning of an invention competition held by her school that year, Jenny determined to create a stool that would be a permanent fixture in the bathroom, and yet could be kept out of the way when not in use.

Jenny decided to make a stool attached to the bathroom cabinet door under the sink. She cut a board of wood into two pieces, each about two feet wide and one foot long. Using metal hinges (铰链), Jenny attached one piece of the wood to the front of the cabinet door, and the second piece to the first. The first piece was set just high enough so that when it swung out levelly from the cabinet door, the second piece would swing down from the first, just touching the ground, and so serving as a support for the first piece of the wood. This created a convenient, steady platform for any person too short to reach the sink. When not in use, the hinges allowed the two pieces of wood to fold back up tightly against the cabinet, where they were held in place by magnets(磁铁). Jenny called her invention the “Kiddie Stool.”

Jenny’s Kiddie Stool won first place. Two years later, it was awarded first prize again at Houston’s first annual Invention Fair. As a result, Jenny was invited to make a number of public appearances with her Kiddie Stool, and was featured on local TV as well as in newspapers. Many people found the story of the Kiddie Stool inspiring because it showed that with imagination, anyone can be an inventor.

24. Why did Jenny invent the Kiddie Stool?

A. Many kids can’t reach the bathroom sink.

B. The stools were too tall for her to reach.

C. Her stool wasn’t firm and often got in the way.

D. She was invited to enter a school invention game.

25. How does the Kiddie Stool work?

A. It will swing out only when the cabinet door opens.

B. It keeps the wooden pieces in place by hinges and magnets.

C. It swings from left to right to be attached to the sink.

D. It uses two pieces of metal to support the platform.

26. What are the characteristics of Jenny’s Kiddie Stool?

A. Permanent and foldable.

B. Easily broken but attractive.

C. Conventional and backward.

D. Convenient and recyclable.

27. What is the main spirit of Jenny’s story?

A. Failure is the mother of success.

B. There’s nothing new under the sun.

C. Need is the mother of invention.

D. Genius means hard-working all one's life.

In a speech this week to the Institute of Civil Engineering, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, made clear his support for wind energy. He focused on some of the many advantages of developing the industry.

Let’s examine those reasons. It is an abundant, clean and sustainable source of energy, reducing our dependence on expensive fossil fuel imports, increasingly from politically unstable parts of the globe. Let’s not forget that Russia turned off the gas supply to Europe in 2006.

More recently, we have all felt the pain this winter, when international gas prices soared by 40% compared to last year. Should we carry on exposing ourselves to the instability(不稳定)of global energy prices and the unpredictability of global events, or should we recognize the value of taking control of our energy supply?

As for the economic opportunities, over the last decade wind energy has attracted $5 billion in investment(投资)to the UK and is set to go above $50 billion by 2020. Look at the companies queuing up to build wind turbine (涡轮) factories in the UK, such as Siemens and Vestas. Examine the number of people employed in the wind industry in the U K—nearly 12000, now with nearly 90000 jobs by 2021.

The UK is already the global leader in wind power, with greater ability than anywhere else in the worl d—enough to supply more than a million homes with electricity all year roun d—and the government is calling for an increase by eight times in the amount of wind turbines installed by 2020, which the industry can achieve as long as it gets the right level of support from ministers. In return, as well as bring the environmental benefits of clean energy, the wind industry is committed to save consumers a lot of money.

28. The writer uses the example of Russia to prove that______.

A. international gas price is not always stable

B. there exists the unpredictability of global events

C. there are conflicts between Europe and Russia

D. every nation is badly in need of gas

29. What does the underlined word “soared” mean?

A. Set.

B. Dropped.

C. Cancelled.

D. Rose.

30. What can we know from Paragraph 4?

A. Many job opportunities are created by wind industry.

B. The UK would not accept many companies’ investment.

C. Over the last ten years the UK has attracted little investment.

D. Other industries are less important than wind industry.

31. What is the most important thing for the government to achieve its goal by 2020?

A. Attracting more investment.

B. Getting enough support from ministers.

C. Improving the technology a lot.

D. Listing the advantages of wind power to the public.

Wild elephants can tell whether a voice comes from a man, woman or boy, a new study says. That’s what researchers found when they played recordings of people for elephants in Kenya. Scientists say this is an advanced thinking skill that other animals haven’t shown. It lets elephants figure out who is a threat and who isn’t. The result shows that the clever animals are also studying people, said study author Karen McComb.

“Basically they have developed this very rich knowledge of the humans that they share their habitat with,” said McComb, a professor at the University of Sussex in England. “Memory is key. They must build up that knowledge somehow.”

The study was released on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It’s close but not quite like the Dr. Seuss book, where the elephant Horton hears something that others can’t hear.

McComb and colleagues went to Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where hundreds of wild elephants live among humans, sometimes coming in conflict over scarce water. The scientists used voice recordings of Maasai men, who on occasion kill elephants, and Kamba men, who are less of a threat to the elephants.

As a result, the elephants reacted defensively — retreating and gathering in a bunch — more to the Maasai language recording because it was associated with the more threatening human tribe, said study co-author Graeme Shannon.

They repeated the experiment with recordings of Maasai men and women. Since women almost never spear elephants, the animals reacted less to the women’s voices. The same thing happened when they substituted young boys’ voices. “Making this kind of fine distinctions in human voice patterns is quite remarkable,” said Emory University animal cognition expert Frans de Waal, who was not part of the study.

32. Who were the people taking part in the study?

A. Frans de Waal and Karen McComb. C. Dr. Seuss and Graeme Shannon.

B. Graeme Shannon and Frans de Waal. D. Karen McComb and Graeme Shannon.

33. What can wild elephants benefit from their special ability?

A. Identifying and avoiding possible danger.

B. Growing much faster than any other animals.

C. Having a better understanding of humans.

D. Developing their language skills.

34. How did the elephants feel of young boys’ voices?

A. They are extremely exciting.

B. They are very depressing.

C. They are less threatening.

D. They are gentle and kind.

35. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Wild elephants can distinguish between human languages.

B. The conflict between humans and wild elephants is growing.

C. Wild elephants use language skills to make discrimination.

D. Wild elephants can build up good memory and learn tricks.

Reading plays an important role in the development of an individual. 36 One needs to, however, understand that reading does not mean making it through your school textbooks to prepare for the approaching tests. You can read almost anything, including novels, newspapers, magazines, and so on. 37

Sadly, people nowadays seem to have lost interest in this activity. Children are busy with computer games and television. 38 Reading does have its loyal fan following, but this fan base is fast disappearing. It seems that people have forgotten the importance of reading. If that’s the case, it calls for a revision.

The most important thing is that reading improves your vocabulary and communication skills and idioms. Reading books of a variety of subjects helps add to your knowledge. 39 You can look at the things from a different view.

40 An individual who doesn’t read will always experience a lack of words when it comes to writing. Reading non-fiction is no doubt important as it helps you gain knowledge, but reading fiction is a must for people in all walks of life as it gives them a glimpse of different views.

A. Every coin has two sides.

Britain is famous for many of its old universities, such as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. And many foreigners come to Britain to get a university degree. Most universities in Great Britain can be divided into 4 groups:

1. Ancient Universities

These are universities founded before the 19th century such as the universities of Oxford, Cambridge or Durham.

2. Red Brick Universities

These universities were founded in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of them are built with red bricks, a characteristic of the time. The universities of Liverpool and Manchester are

probably the most famous Red Brick universities.

3. New Universities

These are universities created in and after the 1960s, such as Keele University, Portsmouth University or Northumbria University.

4. The Open University

It is Britain’s Distance-learning University founded in 1968. This means that students can learn and study at home, rather than sit in a classroom.

Developing a Good Teacher-Student Relationship

A good teacher-student relationship is one of the guarantees for successful teaching and learning.

However,a good teacher-student relationship never comes easily. It depends on the conscious efforts from both the teacher and the students. In the past three years, we have developed a warm, friendly relationship with our English teacher, John Kent. His lectures were always well prepared and he explained his ideas with paintings and recordings. Inspired by our teacher's devotion, we studied all the more diligently. We were all eager to show our appreciation by doing well in studies.

Of course, misunderstanding may occur once in a while. In this case, both sides should be

kind and patient. By sitting down and having a good talk there is no trouble that can't work out.
