跨文化交际口语考试题(大学英语)

Topics for Final Oral Exam (3-4mins each)1.Jean Safari, an American manager, was investigating a serious error made by aJapanese worker at the Japanese subsidiary(子公司)of a US multinational(跨国公司). A component(零件)had been inserted upside down(颠倒,混乱)and the entire batch(一组)had been pulled out of production to be reworked. The cost of this was high. Jean asked the Japanese plant director about which employee had made the error. Had she been identified? What action was being taken against her? She was amazed when the director claimed not to know. “The whole work group has accepted responsibility,”he told her. How do you understand this explanation?= = As we have seen, when asked who had made the error, the Japanese worker answered”the whole work group has accepted responsibility.”However,Jean’s question means which one person is to blame for this mistake. This case reflects the differences between individualism and collectivism .Jean is an American manager while the worker is Japanese. American culture determines American attitude associated with individualism, they think each person seperated from others, they usually think in terms of “I”.So, they will think group has relatively little influence on the behavior of group members. That’s why Jean asked which employee had made the error, you know it’s which one people. On the other hand,Japanese attitude associated with collectivism, they think each person is part of a group, he can’t be be separated from the group, they usually think in terms of “we”.So,they think everyone in the group should assume the responsibility when one person in this group made a mistake. As the saying goes in china ,you know, youfutongxiang younantongdang. That’s why he answered, The whole work group has accepted responsibility.2.I was frustrated with a low-English-level Korean student who never askedquestions in class. My goal was to equalize classroom participation, and one aspect of it was to have students ask questions when they didn’t understand something during class. I taught techniques of how to ask a question, which the students from Mexico readily adopted, but not the Korean student. Why?= =From this case, we have seen the differences between the western class and the traditional eastern class because of the different culture. In fact ,this phenomenon is so common in our Chinese classes, students don’t like asking and teachers are always talking alone. So you know, our English class sometimes is so silent, as if there was teacher only one. The western class is student-centered, teachers just give some suggestion when help is needed. Because of this, students usually think by themselves and ask some questions when they don’t understand. The student-centered way can let teachers see the students’potential. However ,the traditional eastern class is teacher-centered. The teacher is the center of the class, students are often passively to accept the knowledge .In fact ,the students are so afraid of the teacher that they avoid making any mistakes, so they usually keep silent .3. A young Japanese student came to the United States, and he was overwhelmed(压倒,覆盖)by the cordial reception(热诚的接待)he was given. He said, “The American people are wonderful. They are so warm, so friendly-much beyond my expectations.” Some time later, while traveling in the west, this same young man had had dinner with an American family and had remarked that he greatly admired the country’s efficiency, organization, and accomplishment. But he said, there was one thing he would never quite understand, and that was why Americans were so cold, so distant. His host was deeply hurt, and the visit ended on a bit of a sour note(不愉快). What had made the Japanese young man change his view about Americans? What can you infer about American friendship based on this case?= =This case was about a young Japanese student’s experience in the United States, especially in his thoughts about Americans. This young Japanese man’s feeling is typical as many foreign visitors do so. Because of the different treat received ,he totally changed his view about Americans. From this case, we can see that how Americans regard the word “friend ship”is quite different from us Asians. American friendships develop rapidly, and they may change rapidly. People from the United States may at first seem friendly. Americans often chat easily with strangers. As we all know, Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. They may call acquaintances and companions “friends”. These friendships are usually based on common interests. When what they shared activities end , the friendship may fade.4. Litz met a Chinese doctor in the United States, and fell in love with him and theygot married. Litz’s husband had long wished to bring his mother to live with them for a while. So, they invited her over. They are very happy about their mother’s visit. Litz knows being filial to parents is a great value Chinese people cherish. As wife of a Chinese, she tries to be as filial as her husband. Two days after the mother’s arrival, Litz talked to her husband, Dick, while his mother was sitting in the garden enjoying the sunshine.Litz: Dick, how long is your mum going to stay?Dick: I don’t know. I haven’t asked her.Litz: Why not ask her?Dick: What do you mean by asking her?Litz: I mean what I said. Just ask her how long she’ going to stay. What was going to happen the next day made Litz very confused. The mother overheard their conversation and decided to leave for China the very afternoon. Litz had never expected that her visit should be so shot. Why did the Chinese mother-in-law decide to leave the very afternoon? What went wrong?= =Because she heard what they said and feel that Litz may don’t welcome her. She felt sad and unhappy ,then she thought she had better leave .from this case ,we can see the big difference in language between China and America. Chinese people tend to speak more subtle , while the Americans are more directly . This difference is determined by the different cultures between ours. Chinese people pay more attention to subtle, and like to think the deep meaning of each of what others have said. Americans prefer to directly talk about their feelings and thoughts . They do not think that more. This will easily lead to ambiguity and then produce conflict. Just in this case ,Litz just want to know how long her Chinese mother-in-low is going to stay. However, her husband and his mother don’t think so , they think Litz don’t want his mother to live here. So this case arises.4.Linda was a young Puerto Rican girl studying in a New Y ork City high school. She was once suspected of smoking with a group of troublemakers and was punished with them by the principal. She was thought so because when she was interviewed by the principal, she avoided meeting his eyes and only stared down at the floor, hence(因此)being regarded as sly(诡秘的) and dishonest. Her mother insisted that she was a good girl while the principle firmly believed that she was not. This led to a demonstration(实证)of Puerto Rican parents at the school the next morning. And later the principal found that Linda was indeed a gentle and sweet girl.= =Linda is misunderstood because she avoided meeting the principal’s eyes and stared down at the floor. Her behaviors may express that she has down something terrible and she felt guilty .She told a lie and tried to conceal something.Sometimes eye contact plays a meaningful part in communication.Eye contact is an important aspect of body language. One could draw up quite a lot of 'rules' about eye contact: to look or not to look, when to look and how long to look, who and who not to look at, etc. And these rules vary from culture to culture.People from American culture expects eye contact, though this does not have to be constant when communicating with one another. If you look at the other person’s eye when speaking,he will think you as a confident person and feel be respected.6.Attending a conference in Rio de Janeiro, Linda struck up a conversation with a young lady from the local group. As the lady talked, she appeared to be making a physical advance, moving toward Linda every time Linda moved away. Eventually, Linda found her back against the wall, unable to retreat any further. Concerned and uncomfortable, she excused herself curtly, left the party, and did not attend any others. Why?This case is about the cultural differences in the understanding of personal space.Riode janeiro is a big city in brazil.Brazilians simply do not give private, personal space high consideration. The local lady is not as sensitive about personal space as is linda.Maybe she only wants to express her enthusiasm,so she makes a physical advance. In this sense, she never realizes that her behaviors may be regarded as rude. By constrast, linda’s culture is more sensitive to privacy. When the lady approaches her,she feels an invasion of his private space, and thus becomes angry.。

Therefore, they also have the obligations to treat animals around us well. we need laws to punish those who mistreat animals. Some people regard animals as a kind of resource on the earth. I think we should evaluate this view critically. In the last analysis, we are creatures too. We need energy too, So, I am against the idea of absolute vegetarianism. Some other animals are used in the scientific experiment. I think it’s very hard to say whether it is good or not. But I want to point out two things. First, condition permitting, used the animals as less as possible. Second, do not mistreat animal during the process of experiments. As human beings, we needn’t apotheosize ourselves. Should animal products be bannedSome people regard animals as a kind of resource on the earth. I think we should evaluate this view critically. In the last analysis, we are creatures too. We need energy too, So, I am against the idea of absolute vegetarianism.many farmers put five hens whose wingspan length is about 32 inches each into one cage which is only 51 inches long. And they will be exposed to bright light all day in order to lay more eggs. And it is even impossible for these hens to move all its life. They are treated like machines. This action is undoubtedly the mistreatment of animals and should be banned. Some other animals are used in the scientific experiment. I think it’s very hard to say whether it is good or not. But I want to point out two things. First, condition permitting, used the animals as less as possible. Second, do not mistreat animal during the process of experiments.Still some animals are used in the show or hunt game for human’s fun. For example, some British hunt foxes in a certain hunt zone just for fun which has arouse the world’s attention.I think we should take measures to stop games or show like this.NO. humans are animals. and animals do use any means possible to make it easier for them to get food. humans are also following the same animal trend of thought when thinking of ways to save them the trouble of having to go forage and hunt for what is so non-animal about breeding animals for foodand if people dun breed animals for food, you will run out of wild life pretty fast一些人把动物作为一种地球上的资源;我认为我们应该评价这一观点的批判;在最后的分析中,我们的生物也;我们需要的能源,因此,我反对绝对的素食主义;许多农民把五只母鸡,它的翼展长度约为32英寸,每到一个笼子里,只有51英寸长;他们将被暴露一整天的明亮的灯光为下更多的蛋;它甚至不可能将所有这些母鸡的生活;他们像对待机器;这一行动无疑是对动物的虐待和应该被禁止;其他一些动物被用于科学实验;我认为说它是否是好或不好,很难;但我想指出两件事;首先,条件允许的情况下,使用尽可能少的动物;第二,不虐待动物实验过程中;还有一些动物被用于显示或找人的有趣的游戏;例如,一些英国狩猎狐狸在一定的狩猎区只是为了好玩,已引起世界的关注;我认为我们应该停止游戏或显示这样的措施;人类是动物号;和动物一样用任何可能的手段使他们更容易获得食物;人类也遵循同样的趋势时,认为动物想拯救他们不得不去的食物有什么非动物饲养动物为食的牧草和狩猎的麻烦的方法吗如果人们墩养殖动物的食物,你会很快的野生生活Unit 7you dream to visit.Denmark, the beautiful country in the in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe. Whether a short trip between neighboring towns or a long jaunt across the countryside, there are a few things you should keep in mind when attempting train travel in China.Train Travel in China has four different travel classes. Hard Seat is the most common and cheapest way to trave. The greatest numbers of Chinese travellers use this class, and more tickets than seats are sold so only the very quick are assured a seat. Soft Seat is a better way to travel and most of the time you can reserve a seat. These are the best for city to city or fairly short distance train travel in China. Hard Sleeper are for long journeys, and not for the novice traveler. With a Soft Sleeper you upgrade to a room with an actual door. Not to mention a fairly decent bed, though you are usually on your own for food. This is the preferred way for many to experience China rail travel. For me, traveling by train means that you have to sit on your seat still, never expecting to go for a walk in the aisle or go to the WC. You have to sit on your seat, keeping the same gesture and taking to the one next to you only in order not to disturb the men sitting in the aisle. And we can easily get tired and become sleepy because of being still and the low-Oxygen air. However, you will suffer more if you want to take a sleep. It is really uncomfortable to lie on or bend over on something. And you will always be woke up by the noise, temperature or speed of the train.②Many people prefer to travel by air. This is because air travel has some advantages. In the first place, airplane, the miracle created by man, is the fastest means of transport. It takes the least time for one to travel by air from one place to another. Secondly, traveling by air is convenient and comfortable. Friendly air hostesses are affectionate and considerate. They look after passengers all the way to their destinations. Moreover, on long distance flights there are films and music for people to entertain themselves.Everything has two sides. The same is true of air travel. It has some disadvanges, too. For one theing, air travel costs a great deal. The average Chinese are not rich enough to afford expensive air fares. So they prefer to take trains, which save a lot of money. For another, although passengers are assured of their safety, they are still worried about it during the journey because flying always involves more or less risk.As far as I am concerned, the advantages mentioned above exceed the disadvantages. IF I were given choc=ice between travelling by air and travelling by train,I would certainly prefer the former. For me, time is money and it is the most important thing I have to take into consideration whatever I do.③bus travel is limited to the distance. Few people will travel long distance by bus. It is a waste of time, and it is uncomfortable.①中国铁路旅行通常是微风,列车运行时间和覆盖网络包括几乎任何你想去的地方;是否邻近的城镇和农村的跨越长短途旅行之间的一个短暂的旅行,有几件事你应该记住,当试图在中国乘火车旅行;火车在中国旅行有四个不同的旅游类;硬座是旅游的最常见和最便宜的方式;中国游客人数最多使用这个类,销售超过座位只有很快向一座的票;软座是一个更好的方式去旅行,大部分的时间你可以预定一个座位;这是最好的城市或相当短的距离,在中国乘火车旅行;硬卧是长途旅行,而不是旅客的新手;用软枕您升级到一个实际的门的房间;更不用说一个相当不错的床,但你通常在你自己的食物;这是很多经验,中国铁路旅行的首选方法;对我来说,坐火车旅行,意味着你必须坐在你的座位还是,没想到走在过道散步或去WC;你要坐在座位上,保持同样的姿势,以一只为了不打扰的人坐在你旁边的过道;我们可以很容易累,成为困因仍然和氧低的空气;然而,你会更想睡觉;这真是躺或趴在什么地方不舒服;你总是会醒来的噪音,温度和速度的火车;②许多人愿意乘飞机旅行;这是因为空中旅行有一定的优势;在第一个地方,飞机,人类创造的奇迹,是最快的交通工具;它需要一个旅行的空气从一个地方到另一个最少的时间;其次,空中旅行方便和舒适;友好的空姐深情体贴;看看他们的乘客到他们的目的地后;此外,在长途航班上有供人娱乐,电影和音乐;任何事物都有两面;空中旅行也一样;它有一些缺点,太;一上,空中旅行费用高;普通中国人还不富裕,昂贵的机票;所以他们宁愿乘火车,这样能省下许多钱;另一方面,虽然乘客保证他们的安全,他们仍然担心在旅途中因为飞行或多或少的风险;就我而言,上述提到的优点超过缺点;如果给我巧克力=冰之间的空中旅行和乘火车旅行,我宁愿选择前者;对我来说,时间就是金钱,最重要的是我必须考虑我无论做什么;③旅游巴士有限的距离;一些人将乘公共汽车长途旅行;这是浪费时间,这是不舒服的;3. benefits of traveling.I am always interested in traveling.traveling increases our knowledge. 此处需要一个形容词来修饰名词fable。
符合这一要求的选项有E “same”,J“consistent”,K “similar”以及O “opposite”。
从原文“At the request of the hare, a second race is 47 ”来看,因兔子的要求,第二场比赛……。
49.选B。
首先,这句话是一句强调句,由“it is … that”引导,强调主语the tortoise。

You can lose your bad memory , such as lose love , sad issues , or unsuccessful periodA poor memory may have some advantages. With the passage of time, the sad memories will fade. Those with a short memory tend to recover faster than those with a tenacious memory. For the same reason, forgetful people may be more ready to forget their daily worries and forgive others for their offenses. With a less retentive mind, they may enjoy life more2.Do you think it is necessary for most of Chinese children to do a lot of difficult math problems for Olympic Math Competition? Some parents believe that by doing a lot of difficult math problems, their children will have a solid foundation in math. Some parents even believe that trying to solve hard math problems will promote the growth of children's brains and help develop their logical reasoning ability and concentration, which will facilitate learning in other areas. Before class, they preview the text to get some idea about what the teacher is going to say and which part of the text is difficult. If somebody is twenty minutes late for an appointment, you may be annoyed because it is a waste of your time. To avoid being late, we should make adequate preparations. With my educational background, I may find it easier to run a company selling bio-tech products. The next thing I would have to take into account, is the money available. Suppose the establishment of a company required a capital of a million dollars, I would try to see whether I could get a loan. If not, I would give up the idea and try to set up a smaller service company that required less capital. Candidate 2: I think that some people may choose a well-paid job instead of a job close to their heart.I think many people prefer to find a job that they really like. After all, most people want to enjoy themselves rather than have plenty of money without a sense of achievement and happiness. If one is in serious financial difficulty, one can hardly afford the luxury of a dream job. Money is the top priority.2. Should different cultures integrate or keep their own characteristics? Candidate 1: I think that different cultures should integrate during the trend toward globalization.Candidate 2: I think that diversified cultures make our world more interesting and colorful.First, Merging into of will make the culture to have multi-faceted, best illustrate, such as American culture Canadian culture and native culture difference. Secondly, why this multi-faceted will benefit. Of course, bad also have, that is aboutto explain why advantages disadvantages. Or examples such as the United States and other western developed countries give full play to the advantage of the strong in culture. China is also on its way. Finally, the full analysis maintain their feature in the disadvantages and shortcomings than it tries to explain the advantages. Best explanation of the world's cultures is the trend of fusion, not independence.A well-integrated nation can better keep the unity and stability of the country. People in some countries dislike foreigners or ethnic minorities to behave in different ways. They prefer foreigners to be assimilated. From the saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”, we know local people expect foreigners to conform to local customs. From the phrase “Immigration and Naturalization (归化) Service” used in America, it seems foreigners are unnatural and should become naturalized citizens. Those who behave differently are more likely to be subject to racial attacks. The trend toward globalizations encourages international exchanges and integration of cultures. In favor of diversification:If all nations integrated into one, the world would be monotonous. The world is interesting and colorful because of its diversified cultures. Multiculturalism encourages tolerance and understanding among diverse groups in a society, thus promoting stability and development. All ethnic groups should be allowed to maintain their unique characteristics. To achieve this, the Chinese government has adopted a series of favorable policies for ethnic minorities.3. What kind of boss would you like to work for: one who is inefficient but kind, or one who is efficient but very strict with employees?Candidate 1: I think that many people, if not most, prefer to work for a kind, good-natured boss.Candidate 2: I think that some people, including me, will choose to work for a boss who is capable but very strict with his subordinates. Many people, if not most, prefer to work for a kind, good-natured boss. Under such a boss, they feel secure and happy. The boss won't scold employees simply because they have made a small mistake. He will also be generous. It is true that sometimes because of his lack of ability, his company may not reap huge profits, and employees can hardly get a raise. But happiness is surely more important than money. However, some people, including me, will choose to work for a boss who is capable but very strict with his subordinates. If the boss is capable, he will lead the company to one new height after another. When the company thrives, all employees will benefit. Even if the boss may give an employee a severe dressing-down for something he or she did, the employee can learn a lesson from the event. Under such a boss, employees can gain valuable experience, which may serve as a good foundation for them to start a business of their own in the future.4. Which do you prefer, Chinese movies or foreign movies? Why?Candidate 1: Occasionally I do enjoy seeing a foreign movie.Candidate 2: I feel more at home with Chinese movies.my answer is Chinese Movies.reasons below:As we know ,every excellent movie has its special background , if u have known it very well ,then it is helpful for us to grasp the real sentiment the movie intend to express.otherwise,u might cannot seeing into it at all.i mean the comprehension of the culture that the movie involved in is very important .So i am chinese , i know Chinese culture very well ,So when i watch a Chinese Movie, i feel good ,at least i prefer Chinese movie at present, maybe oneday when i learns foreign culture very well , i gonna prefer foreign movies 2.i believe every culture has its attraction and glorious. It is my presonal opinion .As a young man,I wanched a lot movies, both Chinese movies and foreign ones, but the latter is my favourite.let me tell you why foreign movies attract me more, first, their drama is better, the story is thrill and suspensive, more like a story;additionally, there are much more famous movies and movie stars in foreign countries, like America;the last thing is I wanna improve my English by watch a lot of foreigh movies.so,I prefer foreign movies to Chinese movies.5. Do you think a girl should share the expenses or let the boy pay the bill? Candidate 1: I think it is natural that some girls no longer want men to pick up the check.Candidate 2: I think that the normal pattern is that the boy pays the bill. Girls doesn't mind to share the cost on a date, which means she can relax and feel free at the most.no !!in my eyes ,a pair of lovers,.if you date, you shouldn't pay for everything, just a heart .the heart of your love for herIn the past, the normal pattern was that men worked, while women did not. Thus, it was natural for men to pay. Things have changed now. A certain level of equality between men and women has achieved, so it is natural that some girls no longer want men to pick up the check. Instead, they prefer to share or “Go Dutch.” to show that they are equal to males6. Candidate 2: I think this punishment is not strong enough to stop drunken driving.8. Is there a relationship between reason and emotion? Which plays a bigger role in our lives?Candidate 1: I think that reason plays a bigger role.Candidate 2: I think that emotion plays a bigger role. Both reason and emotion are important in our lives. Although they are obviously different from each other, they complement each other just the same. Think about it, it is difficult to isolate reason from emotion and vice versa. When one is arguing, one is combining logic with feelings. When a speaker is advocating a principle, the feeling he puts into his voice reinforces his argument. When scientists conduct researches, they may choose an area that is interesting to them. Darwin studied science because he had been fascinated by plants and animals since his childhood. However, in some areas either reason or emotion may play a bigger role. Science students may need more logic than emotion to conduct experiments, while art students tend to rely more on their emotion for creativity. Within a family, people usually cherish the emotional ties between family members. Emotion could be more important than reason when falling in love or trusting a member of one's family, whereas reason plays an important role when deciding how to educate a child. Together or separate, reason and emotion play critically important roles in our lives. What do you think? Or feel?9. When a boss employs or promotes people, what may be the chief consideration: their education or their practical ability?Candidate 1: I think that one’s educational background is not unimportant. Candidate 2: I think that most bosses may probably attach more importance to the candidate’s ability. If I wanted to launch a business, I would consider all of these factors, for they all play an indispensable role. First of all, I would consider my ability. Since I majored in biology, I would be cautious in starting a company to sell something I am not familiar with such as building materials or DVDs. With my educational background, I may find it easier to run a company selling bio-tech products. The next thing I would have to take into account, is the money available. Suppose the establishmentof a company required a capital of a million dollars, I would try to see whether I could get a loan. If not, I would give up the idea and try to set up a smaller service company that required less capital. Last but not least, I would survey the market to see if the products I planned to deal with could be sold. If they were unmarketable, I had better give up the idea of founding a company in this area. If they sold well, then I would go ahead. In fact, most bosses will consider both, though they may probably attach more importance to the candidate's ability. After all, a company's profits come directly from the abilities of the entire staff. Many of the qualities of a good worker such as diligence, teamwork, loyalty to the company, and courtesy to customers are gained through on-the-job training rather than from book knowledge.10. Stores are closed in the evenings and on weekends in many Western countries, while they are normally open in China. Which system do you prefer? Why? Candidate 1: I think that the weekend is meant for people to have a rest and the employees at stores, post offices and so on all deserve a rest.Candidate 2: I think if all stores are closed, it can be inconvenient for many people, especially those in double-income households. In my opinion, each system has its advantages and disadvantages. The weekend is meant for people to have a rest, and the employees at stores, post offices, government departments, schools and so on all deserve a rest. The two-day weekend was won after centuries of demands for workers' rights. If one store breaks the rules and stays open on the weekend, it will do unusually good business, but this is unfair competition. If people can enjoy proper rest over the weekends, they can work more vigorously during the weekdays. However, if all stores are closed, this can be inconvenient for many people, especially those in double-income households. If a small proportion of the population, that is those in the service industry, work on weekends, most people will enjoy their weekends even more. On the whole, I am in favor of the current Chinese system.。
