He always took medicine books to sea and liked to talk about different diseases. One day a lazy sailor on his ship pretended to be ill. He lay onhis bunk(铺) and groaned as if he were very sick. Three days later another sailor pretended that he had something wrong with his chest. Once more the captain looked in his medical books and told the “sick” man to have a rest. The other sailors were very angry because they had more work to do. The patients had the best food and laughed at their friends when the captain was not looking. At last the mate(船长副手) decided to cure the “sick” men. He mixed up some soap, soot(烟灰), glue(胶水) and other unpleasant things. Then he obtained permission from the captain togive his medicine to the “sick” men. When they tasted the medicine, they really did feel ill. It was so horrible that one of the patients jumped out of his bunk, ran up on deck and climbed the highest mast on the ship. He did not want any more medicine. The mate told both of the men that they must take the medicineevery half an hour, night and day. This soon cured them. A Sudden Cure.B. Two Patients.C. Captain and Sailors.D. A Difficult Voyage.Passage TwoQuestions 6 to l0 are based on the following passage:When aluminum was first produced about a hundred and fifty years ago, it was so difficult to separate from the ores (矿石) in which it was found that its price was higher than that of gold. The price remained high until a new process was discovered for refining the metal with the aid of electricity approximately three quarters of a century later. The new method was so much cheaper that aluminum became practical for many purposes, one of which was making pots and pans.Aluminum is lightweight, rustproof and easily shaped into different forms. By mixing it with other metals, scientist have been able to produce a variety of alloys, some of which have the strength of steel but weigh only one third as much.Today, the uses of aluminum are innumerable. Perhaps its most important use is in transportation. Aluminum is found in the engines of automobiles, in the hulls of boats. It is also used in many parts of airplanes. In fact, the huge “airbus” planes would probably never have been produced if aluminum did not exist. By making vehicles lighter in weight aluminum has greatly reduced the amount of fuel needed to move them. Aluminum is also being used extensively in the building industryin some countries.Since aluminum is such a versatile (多用的) metal, it is fortunate that bauxite (铝土矿), which is one of its chief sources, is also one of the earth’s most plentiful substances. As the source of aluminum is almost inexhaustible, we can expect that more and more uses will be found for this versatile metal.

They want to bring waterinto desserts so that people can live and grow food. Even so,more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Why? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth. Some places on the earth do not get very much rain.Yet,they still do not become deserts. This is because there are some small green plants growing there.Plants help keep water in the earth.Plants do not let the wind blow the dirt away.Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.A man decides to make a farm in a very dry place. He digs in the earth and takes away the grass and plants that are already growing on the dry land.He makes a farm.He puts plants in rows. The sun is very hot.It makes the land even drier. When the rain comes,it runs between the rows of plants. It washes the good dirt away. When the wind comes, it blows between the rows of the plants. It blows the good dirt away.Soon the land is not good enough for a farm any more. The man lets his animals eat all the plants on it.Now the land does not have any plants on it.The sun and wind dry the land and all of the good dirt away. Now the land is a desert. 锛堝垎鏁帮細10锛?/p>(1).A desert is probably______. 锛堝垎鏁帮細2锛?/p>A.grassB.treeless 鈭?/span>C.wetD.muddy瑙f瀽锛?/div>(2)nd is becoming desert because of lack of______. 锛堝垎鏁帮細2锛?/p>A.rainB.windC.peopleD.plants 鈭?/span>瑙f瀽锛?/div>(3).Which of the following is NOT the reason why small green plants are very important to dry places? 锛堝垎鏁帮細2锛?/p>A.They keep the earth from becoming even drierB.They do not let wind blow the earth awayC.They add color to the dry places 鈭?/span>D.They hold water瑙f瀽锛?/div>(4).It can be inferred from the passage that______ . 锛堝垎鏁帮細2锛?/p>A.it is bad to plant in rows in a dry place 鈭?/span>B.it is better to raise animals on dry land than to make a farmC.it is bad to make a farm in a dry place, but it is good to raise animals thereD.all lands that don鈥檛 get very ran are deserts`瑙f瀽锛?/div>(5).What’s the purpose of the writer to give an example of the man?______.锛堝垎鏁帮細2锛?/p>A.To criticize himB.To tell an interesting storyC.To prove that man makes deserts 鈭?/span>D.To prove the hot sun makes a desert瑙f瀽锛?/div>Passage TwoThere are some people who actually enjoy work--in fact, they love to work. They spend many extra hours on the job each work and often take work home with them. These workaholics are as addicted to their jobs as other people are to drugs or alcohol. In some city centers, workaholism is so common that people do not consider it unusual. they accept the lifestyle as normal.Workaholism can be a serious problem. Because true workaholics would rather work than do anything else, they probably don’t know how to relax; that is ,they might not enjoy movies, sports,or other types of entertainment. Most of all, they hate to sit and do nothing. The lives of workaholics are usually stressful, and this stress can cause health problems. In addition, typical workaholics don’t pay much attention to their families. They spend little time with their children, and marriages may end.Is workaholism always dangerous? Perhaps not. There are ,certainly, people who work well under stress. Some studies show that many workaholics have great energy and interest in life.Their work so pleasurable that they are actually very happy. For most workaholics, work and entertainment are the same thing. Their jobs provide them with a challenge; this keeps them busy and creative. Other people retire from work at age sixty-five,but workaholicsusually prefer not to quit. They are still interested in work-and life-in their eighties and nineties.。

1. There are many people (who like to go to the movies).2. There are different kinds of vegetables can be bought on the market by people. 1. There are many people who like to go to the movies.2. There are different kinds of vegetables that people can buy on the mar ket.

1. Comparing with the bike, the car runs much faster.2. The climate in Walton is colder than other cities. 1. Compared with the bike, the car runs much faster.2. The climate in Walton is colder than that of/in other cities.

Reading ComprehensionPassage OneThe TV play Zheng He is broadcasted on CCTV and the great Chinese traveler comes gradually back to us. It reminds us of a lot of excitement.Zheng He, the Columbus of the east, was an amazing man. He was born in 1371 and, 11 years later, was caught by the army of a rich young man called Zhu Di and made to word for him. Over time the rich man saw that Zheng He was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403, Zhu Di was made the king of China and asked Zheng He to join his new government. The King wanted to learn more about the world and show other countries his power. He ordered many new ships to be built and made Zheng He the leader. Between 1405 and 1433, he led seven sea ships to different parts of the world. He certainly traveled to India, Africa and the Middle East. Some people insist that his ships may have even reached South Africa and Australia. Each trip lasted between two and four years and it is believed he sailed more than 50,000 kilometers during his travels. With 28,000 men and over 300 ships, such as boats for food, water and even soldiers’ horses, Zheng He led a fleet whose size would not be equaled by Europeans for over 500 years. On these trips, he brought with him many Chinese goods like silk and medicine to give to the foreign kings or to sell for local goods. He returned from each trip with boats filled with expensive things such as gold and jewellery, foreign guests and strange animals like a giraffe. It is a pity that we may never learn everything about Zheng He’s travels. After he died in 1433, the new king, who thought these trips were unlucky and cost too much, had them stopped and he burned almost all the books about Zheng He’s travels. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the rubbish and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery, “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”Vaillant’s study followed these males in great d etail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Scores were given to such things as part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had down as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. Third, attending classes regularly will help to form a good habit of punctuality, which is of great importance for the students to do a good job in the future. Therefore, we university students should form the good habit of attending our classes regularly from now on. And some day we’ll benefit from it.31. My First Impression in CollegeOn the very first day in college, I was surprised to find the campus was so large. Believe it or not, I even lost my way to the dormitory when I returned from the dining hall.At first, I had difficulty adapting myself to college life. In college, we had more free time than in middle school. In the evening, we were not required to study in the classroom. Instead, we could go anywhere and do what we want. I was at a loss on how to make use of so much free time. Then I borrowed a number of books from the library and most of them were novels, which I had no chance to read in middle school. Besides reading books in my spare time, I played table tennis for fun and made enormous progress. In my opinion, study should be the priority of our college life. Besides, we can take part in sports activities and have fun. Of course, we may take part-time jobs to improve our skills. In all, college life should be colorful and meaningful.4. 1. The Prevalence of Western HolidaysIt is noticeable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while Chinese traditional holidays are being somewhat neglected. Old people often complain that Chinese New Year has lost its real meaning. To their astonishment, young people in China, ignorant about Chinese traditional holidays, are crazy about Christmas or Valentine Day.There are several possible reasons for this phenomenon. First, western nations, such as the United States and Britain, are powerful and dominant in every aspect. Everything in these countries is assumed to be superior and adored by some modern young people. Second, the prevalence of English as a world language and the development of globalization enable western culture to flood in China. Overwhelmed by such a trend, Chinese unconsciously get involved in western culture. Last but not least, some Chinese people have blind faith in foreign things while dismiss our own possessions with contempt.I am critical of this trend. China boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. In modern times, Chinese tradition should be preserved and promoted. But it seems that young people no longer treasure the tradition. On the contrary, they turn to pursue enthusiastically a supposedly more modern culture. If this trend is allowed to continue, the priceless heritage of our ancestors will be replaced by western traditions. Nobody expects such a consequence. So let join hand in handto protect Chinese tradition.51. Living alone or Living with RoommatesNowadays, there has appeared a heated discussion among the college students as to whether they should live alone outside the campus or live together with other roommates in the students’ dormitory. Opinions are divided over the matter. Those who are in favor of living alone maintain that it is very convenient to live by themselves. They can enjoy absolute freedom in a room of their own. They can have their own timetable without disturbing others. They are also free to equip the room with a personal computer so that they can have easy access to the Internet. But others argue that living with roommates has attractions of its own. With several students sharing the same room, each person’s experiences can be greatly enriched. They can learn a lot from talking to one another. By learning to tolerate the differences between individuals, they can become more mature. As far as I’m concerned, I prefer to live with roommates because I love the feeling of belonging. Besides, it is a lot cheaper to live in a dorm than to rent a apartment outside the campus.61. Traffic JamThere is no doubt that traffic congestion becomes a growing worry for the residents of most urban areas. Some major roads are regularly choked with traffic in rush hours. The limited transport capacity contributes largely to the vexing problem. How to solve the headache?.The existing solutions to traffic jam mainly aim at creating metro bus systems and broadening major roads. Widening the existing roads can solve traffic snarls on some level. Soaring car ownership compounds the chronic annoying problem, so we must sharply reduce the heavy reliance on cars and drive a shift to the mass transportation. It is a cheap and good way. We can create a system of customized bus routes and highlight the development of subways, trolleys and light rail. The effective combination of these solutions will enable the urban areas to possess a smooth traffic.7 水资源短缺 On Water ShortageNo one can have failed to notice the fact that water shortage is a grave problem with which the whole world is confronted. Actually, it has become so widespread that it has severely affected people’s daily life and hindered the development of the global economy.A number of factors could account for the problem, but the following might be the critical ones. First, with the development of agriculture and industry, an increasing amount of water is needed. Secondly, the ever-increasing population is another leading cause of water shortage. Besides, the global tendency of warming up also contributes to the problem. What’s worse, pollution and waste of fresh water aggravate the situation. In view of the seriousness of the problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that laws and regulations be worked out and enforced to protect water resources. Secondly, people should enhance their awareness of saving water. With these measures taken, it is reasonable for us to expect a brighter future.8大学生使用信用卡现象On Credit CardAt present, a wide variety of credit cards issued by major banks and shopping malls are thriving in colleges and universities across the nation, with a multitude of college students making up a growing population of card holders. Indeed, one out of five students is estimated to be in possession of at least one credit card, and the figure is expected to be on the steady increase, the latest data published by Yangtze Evening Post suggests.Like anything prior to the emergence of this small piece of plastic, the increasing popularity of credit card on campus has both bright and dark sides. On the one hand, young adults in college, free from the trouble of pocketing a considerable sum of cash, could enjoy the convenience of credit cards and purchase expensive goods by installments. On the other hand, however, the irresponsible and excessive use of the cards by these youngsters, the majority of whom are fresh out of middle school incapable of budgeting their money, can make them heavily in debt which will take them years to pay off.On my personal level, while enjoying a host of conveniences the credit card may bring, we couldn’t afford to ignore a conspicuous fact: in most cases, parents are our sole financial sources. Instead of spending without any restrict, we are supposed to put studies on the top of our agenda and move ourselves beyond heavy dependence upon our parents.91)现在有一些大学生沉迷于网络游戏,家长和学校对此忧心忡忡2)但有人认为网络游戏并不是一无是处3)你对此的看法是……Online GamesAs a product of modern computer and the Internet, online games have become very popular among college students. Many students have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self-discipline are too much indulged in these games so that their health and academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry from the teachers and parents。

3.The person I trusted most was a friend ______ I had been cooperating in business for a long time.A.whomB.with whomC.with whoD.that正确答案:B解析:本题考查的是定语从句。

通常我们写扩展句所采用的方法是举例子(for example, for instance, such as, a case in point is that---)、列数据(according to the recent study/survey,---)等。

在这里很明显用后面的词来修饰眼睛是不可以,只能用big,因为我们听过一首英文歌曲叫做“I am a big big girl, in a big big world.” big表示眼睛大而迷人可爱的。

I am a good boy, and I am a student. I study in Nanjing University, and I have three years experience in Hilton Hotel.

如下所示(黑体划线处):Jinan, the Spring City, is a famous tourist city.Other people may give us instrumental support—financial aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems. He, who would like to play basketball, is a good student. People, especially students, should work hard.

Only when all of us join in the efforts of eliminating cheating at all levels, can we expect to have a cleaner society and a more beautiful future. Only by planning his time care fully can he improve efficiency and make achievements.Only in this way can we master the writing skills step by steps.否定词位于句首(hardly when; never; not only---,but also---; seldom)在我一生当中很难遇到这样的人Seldom in my life have I met such a kind-hearted man. In no other place in the world can one find such enthusiasm for applying for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games.(3)修辞无论是汉语写作还是英语写作,修辞其实非常的重要。

The bicycle is important for us.The bicycle is of importance for us.The bicycle plays an important role in our life. The bicycle, environmental friendliness vehicle, plays an important role in our life. The bicycle is like the air, water, and sunshine and cannot be parted with a moment in our life.
