鲁米斯向前一步紧紧拽住他的衣服，狠狠地盯着他：“现在他们将必死无疑，难道死囚就不是生命吗?”海尔墨完全被这个平日里沉默文雅的老头给震惊了，他无奈地指指自己的办公桌：“如果你不怕接受被审判的命运，四号囚室的钥匙就在我办公桌的抽屉里!”巨大的马塔尔监狱到处是夺路狂奔的犯人，四号囚室的大门已经快被海水淹没，愤怒的死囚们的吼声让人毛骨悚然。

“有钱是多么快活！”坐在茶几旁的肖夫人，当她拿起古色古香的精细的银茶壶倒茶时，心里也许是这样想的。
她身上的穿戴，屋里的陈设，无不显示出家财万贯的气派。
她满面春风，得意之情溢于言表。
然而，由此而认定她是个轻浮的人，却是不公平的。
“你喜欢这幅画，我很高兴，”她对面前那位正襟危坐的年轻艺术家说，“我一直想得到一幅布吕高尔的名作，这是我丈夫上星期给我买的。
”
“美极了！”年轻人赞许地说，“你真幸运。
”肖夫人笑了，那两条动人的柳眉扬了扬。

就在肖夫人要说出她如何选择的这相当戏剧性的时刻，外面进来了一位仪表堂堂的先生，谈话被打断了。
这位先生，不但像一位时装展览的模特儿，而且像一幅名画里的人物，他同这里的环境十分协调。
他吻了一下肖夫人，肖夫人继而将年轻人介绍给她的丈夫。
他们在友好的气氛中谈了十五分钟。
肖先生说，他今天碰见了“可怜的老迪克·罗杰斯”，还借给他一些钱。
“你真好，亲爱的。
”肖夫人漫不经心地说。
