The five-part series, to be broadcast from Thursday July 14 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC TV, also looks at the scientists’ work for the future of mankind. The scientists were a small group of pioneers who explored a world too small to see. What they found there answered some eternal (永久的) questions—What is life? How is it made? Why are children like their parents?DNA is without doubt the most powerful substance(物质) on Earth. The order of its chemicals determines whether a child has her mother’s eyes or her father’s smile. But as DNA shows, until 50 years ago, almost no one knew of its existence. All that changed when two unknown scientists—Jim Watson and Francis Crick—ran into a pub in Cambridge shouting that they’d found the secret of life. The declaration heralded(预示) a momentous discovery, not just for the human race but for the people involved. As this program shows, it was one of the most heated scientific races the world has ever seen.Dr. Watson takes us back 50 years, guiding us through the tumultuous(喧嚣的) events that led to the creation of a double helix (螺旋结构) model being built by Dr. Francis and himself. He tells how he and Crick try hard to find the double helix first and win the Noble Prize. The program shows others involved with the DNA story, including Maurice Wilkins, who helped create the atom bomb. No specific purpose in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become. When I was a kid in the New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine. Most stores were closed and almost nobody worked. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek. Everything under the sun was useful for conversation. The weather, taxes, the state of the world, food prices, the wild nature of the current crop of children. There are other destinations for our Sunday visits. My great-aunt Hattie, who lived in an apartment above a fruit-and-vegetable store and had a dancing parrot named Peetie; my great-grandparents who lived in an apartment near the Jersey City waterfront and spoke only Polish; and last, my uncle Gene, the only member of our extended family who had managed to accumulate significant material wealth. He has a large and beautifully decorated home on a New Jersey lake. Sunday visit to Uncle Gene meant unlimited swimming, fishing, and hunting---heaven for a city kid.The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly. It was the repetition to church, our reward for an hour of devotion, an opportunity to take advantage of the fact that Dad was not at work, we were not in school, and there were no chores that couldn’t wait until Monday. Sunday was, indeed, different from all the other days of the week, because everyone seemed to be on the same schedule, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everyone else.Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to consider that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association. In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visit someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to DO this Sunday?〞 The answer can range from going to the mall to participating in a road race or to jetting to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to a family,〞 such an answer would feel strange, an echo from another era〔时代〕.I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land and tight relationships. Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural cast (特质) still harbors at least what is left of the ethic of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one another in the face of economic vagaries(变幻无常) and a challenging environment.59. The writer’s general impression of the Sunday in the past was a day when __________ .A. everyone would pay a visit to some relatives far awayB. everyone seemed to be free and could have some leisureC. Dad was not at work while Mom was busy helping around the houseD. every adult would go to church and children were not at school60. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5?A. People nowadays prefer staying at home on Sunday.B. People in the city dislike being disturbed on Sunday.C. Such answers are rarely heard in our modern society.D. Visiting someone on Sunday might take a long time.61. What is the writer’s attitude towards the Sunday today?A. UnsatisfiedB. ConfusedC. RespectfulD. Thankful( D )When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remembered well the polished old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with great interest when my mother used to talk to it.Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person—her name was Information Please and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anybody’s number. My first personal experience with Information Please came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. I accidentally hit my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible, but there didn’t seem to be any reason in crying because there was no one at home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my hurting finger, finally arriving at the stairway—the telephone! Climbing up I unhooked the receiver and held it to my ear. “Information Please,〞 I said.A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear. “Information.〞“I hurt my finger…〞 I cried. The tears came readily enough now that I had an audience. “Isn’t your mother home?〞 came the question. “Nobody’s home but me.〞 I sobbed. “Are you bleeding?〞“No,〞 I replied. “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.〞“Can you open your icebox?〞 she asked.I said I could. “Then chip off a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger.〞After that I called Information Please for everything. I asked her for help with my geography and she told me where Philadelphia was. And there was the time that Petey, our pet canary(金丝雀) died. I called Information Please and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said the usual things grown-ups say to comfort a child. But I was unconsoled. Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers, feet up on the bottom of a cage? She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, “Paul, alwaysremember that there are other worlds to sing in.〞 Somehow I felt better.Another day I was on the telephone. “Information Please.〞“Information,〞 said the now familiar voice. “How do you spell fix?〞 I asked. All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Then when I was 9 years old, we moved to Boston. I missed my friend very much. Information Please belonged in that old wooden box back home, and I somehow never thought of trying the tall, shiny new phone that sat on the hall table.Yet as I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me; often in moments of doubt and sadness I would recall the sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle.I had about half an hour between planes, and I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, “Information Please.〞Miraculously, I heard again the small, clear voice I knew so well, “Information.〞 I hadn’t planned this but I heard myself saying, “Could you tell me please how to spell fix?〞 There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, “I guess that your finger must have healed by now.〞“I laughed, “So it’s really still you,〞 I said. “I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time.〞“I wonder,〞 she said, “if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children, and I used to look forward to your calls.〞I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.“Please do; just ask for Sally.〞Just three months later I was back in Seattle…A different voice answered Information and I asked for Sally.“Are you a friend?〞“Yes, a very old friend.〞“Then I’m sorry to tell you. Sally has been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She passed away five weeks ago.〞 But before I could hang up she said, “Wait a minute. Did you say your name was Paul?〞“Yes.〞“Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down. Here it is. I’ll read it. ‘Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll know what I mean.’〞I thanked her and hung up. I did know what Sally meant.62. The author picked up the telephone for the first time mainly to ____________.A. to call his mother who was visiting a neighborB. find someone to give him some sympathyC. call in the doctor for his aching fingerD. to find out what exactly lived in the telephone63. The underlined word “unconsoled〞 in Paragraph 6 means _____________.A. too sad to have a talkB. difficult to deal with someoneC. hard to communicate with someoneD. unable to accept comfort64. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of praise, admiration and “thank you”s, and making them specific and genuine. The way I got interested in this was, I noticed that when I was growing up, and until about a few years ago, I would want to say thank you to someone. I would want to praise them. I would want to take in their praise of me and then I'd just stop myself. I asked myself: why? I felt shy.I felt embarrassed. And then my question became: am I the only one who does this? So I decided to study that question.I'm fortunate enough to work in a rehab facility, so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction. Sometimes it comes down to something as simple as their core wound is how their father died without ever saying he's proud of them. But then, they hear from all the family and friends that the father told everybody else that he was proud, but he never told the son. It's because he didn't know that his son needed to hear it.I used to take my bike into the bike store and they'd do something called "truing(校正)" the wheels. The guy said: "You know, when you true the wheels, it's going to make the bike so much better." I get the same bike back, and they'd have taken all the little warps out of those same wheels I've had for two and a half years, and my bike would feel like new. So, I'm going to challenge all of you. I want you to true your wheels: be honest about the praise that you need to hear. What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife and ask her: “What do you need?”Go home to your husband and ask him what he needs. Go home and ask those questions and then help the people around you. It's simple. But why should we care about this? We talk about world peace. How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages? I think it starts in each of our households. So, let's make things right in our own backyards.21.Why did Laura mention truing the wheels of her bike in the speech? To thank the staff of the bike shop.To show the importance of praise and admiration. To advise readers to get their bike wheels trued, too.To remind readers to renew their relationships with the people around them.A. DCHarvard University in the United States has been ranked as the university with the best "reputation" in the world. The Times Higher Education magazine has listed 200 top universities all over the world based on how they are regarded by a group of international college teachers. That is to say the list measures how universities are regarded, rather than how they actually performed.A subjective, word-of-mouth(口碑的)quality such as "reputation" has genuine economic value for universities, said Simon Marginson, professor of higher education at the University of Melbourne in Australia."Reputation is not just an impression, though it might be not as reliable as performance by objective indicators(客观指标)," said Prof Marginson.Based on the views of 13,000 college teachers around the world, it confirms the power of the big US universities, which dominate this list. Seven of the top 10 are US universities, headed by Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Furthermore, 14 of the top 20 are from the US. Cambridge is the highest ranking UK university in the list, in third place, with Oxford ranked as sixth. For students applying to university, reputation might be hard to quantify, but was an important part of the attractiveness, said the president of Cambridge University's students' union, Rahul Mansigani."Reputation makes a huge difference. If there is an idea that somewhere is great, it will get lots of good people applying whether it's true or not. Factors such as a sense of history and the presence of outstanding college teachers were part of the reputation of Cambridge," he said.25.The underlined word “dominate” in Paragraph 5 probably means __________.A. affectB. decideC. controlD. improve26.What can be inferred from the text?A. No Asian universities are among the Top 10.B. At least five UK universities are among Top 20.C. The Times Higher Education magazine is from the US.D. Reputation affects students’ decisions when choosing universities.27.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. Turning ideas into reputationB. World’s best universities ranked in order of reputationC. The top 200 universities in the USAD. Reputable Universities attractive to more studentsDIN the famous fairy tale, Snow White eats the Queen’s apple and falls victim to a curse; in Shakespeare’s novel, Romeo drinks the poison and dies; some ancient Chinese emperors took pills that contained mercury, believing that it would make them immortal, but they died afterward.Poison has long been an important ingredient in literature and history, and it seems to always be associated with evil, danger and death. But how much do you really know about poison? An exhibition, The Power of Poison, opened last month at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, intended to give the audience a more vivid understanding of poison. The exhibition will continue until Aug 2014, reported The New York Times. The museum tour starts in a rainforest setting, where you can see live examples of some of themost poisonous animals: caterpillars, frogs and spiders. Golden poison frogs, for instance, aren’t much bigger than a coin, but their skin is covered in a poison that can cut off the signaling power of your nerves, and a single frog has enough venom to kill 10 grown humans. The exhibition also features interactive activities. In an iPad-based game, visitors are presented with three puzzling illnesses and asked to identify the poisons based on symptoms. In one case, for example, a pet dog is found sick in a backyard and visitors have to figure out whether it was the toad (蟾蜍), the leaky batteries in the trash or the dirty pond water that did it.“Poisons can be bad for some things,” Michael Novacek, senior vice president of the museum, told NBC News. “Yet they can also be good for others.”This is what visitors learn from the last part of the exhibition, which displays how poisons can be used favorably by humans, including for medical treatment. The blood toxins of vampire bats, for example, can prevent blood from clotting (凝结), which may protect against strokes. A poisonous chemical found in the yew tree is effective against cancer, which is what led to the invention of a cancer-fighting drug called Taxol. One chemical in the venom of Gila monsters can lower the blood sugar of its victims, so it has been used to treat diabetes. The benefits from natural poisons are not limited to just medicine. Believe it or not, many substances that we regularly take in – chili, coffee and chocolate, etc. – owe their special flavors or stimulating effects to chemicals that plants make to poison insects.28.By mentioning Snow White and Romeo at the beginning of the story, the author intendsto .A. show that poison has long been involved in literatureB. show that poison is always linked with evil and deathC. draw readers’ attention to the topic of the articleD. get readers to think of more examples of the use of poison in stories29.What is the main purpose of the exhibition The Power of Poison?A. To give people more in-depth knowledge about poison.B. To teach people how to handle poisonous animals.C. To inform people about which animals are the most poisonous.D. To show how poison has been used for medical treatment.30.Which of the following statements about the exhibition is TRUE according to the article?A. The exhibition will lead visitors to a real rainforest.B. Golden poison frogs are the most poisonous animals on display.C. Those who visit the exhibition can join in some iPad-based interactive games.D. Besides taking an active part in class activities, we are expected to behave responsibly to build up a good reputation for the team.In addition, students with high popularity are those who show respect, concern and sympathy for others. So undoubtedly, we should never hesitate to give a hand to those in need. Finally, when it comes to gaining popularity, one thing that can’t be ignored is to be strict with ourselves, making every effort to achieve an all-round development. In times of success, we should remain modest, while in the face of difficulty, we need to be strong-minded enough. All in all, popularity with classmates and teachers comes naturally to those who keep improving their own qualities.听力材料Text 1W: I need some cash.
