These three things are spelling, pronunciation and meanings.First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order —a, b, c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page, the word “poor” comes before “poverty” and the word “poverty” comes before the word “power”.The second thing, a dictionary will tell you the pronunciation of a word. Most dictionaries give a phonetic sound or alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation. The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meanings of a word. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word’s meanings. For example, in English the common word “get” has over 20 different meanings.Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.29. In the passage, which is not one of the three important things of dictionaries?30. What can a better dictionary tell you?31. What are the phonetic alphabets used to show?Passage ThreeDuring a 1995 roof collapse, a fire fighter named Donald Herbert was left brain damaged. For 10 years he was unable to speak. Then one Saturday morning, he did something that shocked his family and doctors —he started speaking. “I want to talk to my wife,” Donald Herbert said out o f the blue. Staff members of the nursing home where he has lived for more than 7 years rose to get Linda Herbert on the telephone. “It was the first of many conversations the 44-year-old patient had with his family and friends during the 14 hour stretch,” Herbert’s uncle Simon Manka said. “How long have I been away?” Herbert asked. “We told him almost 10 years,” the uncle said. He thought it was only three months.Herbert was fighting a house fire on Dec. 29, 1995, when the roof collapsed burying him underneath. After going without air for several minutes, Herbert was unconscious for two and a half months and has undergone therapy ever since.News accounts in the days and years after his injury described Herbert as blind and with little, if any, memory. A video shows him receiving physical therapy, but apparently unable to communicate and with little awareness of his surroundings. Manka declined to discuss his nephew’s current condition or whether the apparent progress was continuing. “The family wa s seeking privacy while doctors evaluated Herbert,” he said. As word of Herbert’s progress spread, visitors streamed into the nursing home. “He is resting comfortably,” the uncle told them.Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.32. What happened to Herbert 10 years ago?33. What surprised Donald Herbert’s family and doctors one Saturday?34. How long did Herbert remain unconscious?35. How did Herbert’s family react to the public attention?Section CDirections: In this section, you will hear a passage three times, when the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information. For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written.Ever since humans lived on the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When it is difficult to express with language, communication is accomplished through sign language in which body movements stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to turn to this form of expression. Many of these movements are simple and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.Body language passes on ideas or thoughts by certain actions. A nod means agreement, while shaking the head shows disagreement. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While verbal form is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.。

The 20-lane Avenue 9th July is the widest street on the planet and if you need to know where you are in the city, it’s an easy reference point as it cuts through the metropolis from north to south. La Boca, the port where the first Spaniards landed, is one of the poorest regions in the city. The people of La Boca share one of Argentina’s greatest passions: football. From its slums have come some of the greatest players and its most famous team. La Boca is where Diego Maradona, one of football’s leading legends, began his career. So why is football so important to Argentinians?W: Because we are a very passionate country. We are Latins.M: In every way, we have passion, for football, for music. We are also famous for the tango. People started dancing the tango in the 1800s. N: It’s a dance full of passion and emotion.N: I’ve been riding on and off since I was eight or nine and I love horses and I’ve never played polo before and apparently Argentina is the place to learn. Morning, Juan. Morning, Gada. First lesson: getting on the horse.J: Come on, Nicki. You can do it!N: I can do it. I’ve got to do one, haven’t I? Here we go!J: Ola, Nicki!N: Yes! That was one! F: If you want, we have very good vegetables here!N: Very social, isn’t it?F: As you say, with family and friends, good table, good wine, you share wonderful moments. It’s got a beautiful beach and you can swim in the sea in the summer. One of the most important places in Rimini is the cathedral, and also the Arch of Augustus.W: Ah, but for me the most important place is the beach.M: Yes, for me, too. And at night, the bars on the beach … You can go dancing –it’s really good fun …W: And what about the food? Well, a typical food from Rimini is puntarelle or pasta with fresh vegetables, but the fish is really amazing. The city is by the sea so the fish is very fresh.M: So, we think Rimini is a beautiful, relaxing place. This year, some shoppers, however, stayed up late on Thanksgiving night. This change in behavior was in large part due to the efforts of different stores to beat each other during the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Some popular stores for the first time opened at midnight on Thanksgiving night to offer deals that once were reserved for the next day. It was reported that 24 percent of Black Friday shoppers were at stores at midnight. That’s up from 9.5 percent the year before when only a few stores were open during that time. But those hours mostly attracted the younger people. Of those shopping at midnight on Black Friday, 37 percent were aged 18 to 34. Oldershoppers weren’t as quick to run to the stores. Only 23.5 percent of 35- to 54-year-olds were in stores by midnight. One department store, for example, attracted 10,000 people to its midnight opening and many of them were young people who turned out for the gift sets and discounted fashion items. Jenny, 15 years old, went out with her four cousins to one big department store at midnight and then shopped at another one until 2:30 a.m. Then, she and her cousins went home to bed. “It’s always been inconvenient,”Jenny says of the traditional 4 a.m. Black Friday openings of years past. “No one likes to wake up that early.”Q1: Wh at is special about this year’s Black Friday shopping?Q2: Why did some stores open at midnight on Thanksgiving night?Q3: How many Black Friday shoppers were reported to go to the shops at midnight this year?Q4: What can we learn about the 15-year-old Jenny?Passage 2Scripts and answersMost people like to keep a healthy diet during the holiday season starting from Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Year. How we see our environment shapes our whole world. Most of us see everything as independent from one another. But the reality is that everything is part of one interconnected, interrelated whole. For example, a tree may appear isolated, but in fact it affects and is affected by everything in its environment - sunshine, rain, wind, birds, minerals, other plants and trees, you, me. The tree shapes the wind that blows around it; it is also shaped by that wind. Look at the relationship between the tree and its environment and you will see the future of the tree.阿曼·莫特万:现在环境面临的最大威胁来自我们人类对环境的态度。
