这种跨世纪人才素质的培养需求，促使我们反思已往所进行的英语教学存在着很大的局限性：重理论、轻实践；重书本知识的传授，轻动手能力的培养；重学习结果，轻学习过程；重间接知识的学习，轻直接经验的获得；重教师讲授，轻学生探索。
传统的教学模式是以教师的讲授为主，学生接受型的教学理论体系。
学生学习英语的动机是外在的：记住教师所教的语言知识和通过考试。
因此，我们认为课堂教学改革的进一步深化，必须确立以人的发展为终极目标，探索一种崭新的适应时代发展需求的教学模式。
国家教委颁布的《新课程标准》要求：英语教学要实现认知、情感和技能三大领域的教学目标，特别注重在传授知识与进行思想教育的同时，培养学生的自主学习能力。
“学会学习，掌握一定的学习策略，培养终身学习的能力，已成为一个人生存与发展的必备条件。
”而学生只有在他们乐于参与活动中，才自始自终是自觉主动的语言实践者，而不是被动的追随教师。
“以活动为中心,学生自主学习”型教学模式强调通过学生的自我发现去掌握知识，培养学生对知识本身的兴趣与热爱，使学生把语言的学习看作为内在的需要，学生的角色从接受者转变为分析者、探究者。
三、《新目标英语》为实施“以活动为中心, 学生自主学习”提供了教学可行性《新目标英语》使广大学生和英语教师耳目一新，它采用新颖的编写体系：每个单元都有一个明确的主题。
教材内容丰富，信息量大，题材广泛，话题注意到知识和趣味的结合、科学和人文的结合、记忆和思维的结合。
在任务型教学方面有独特的设计，与学生的知识面形成了明显的“信息沟（Information Gap）",有利于激活语言与情景的关系，使学生在用英语做事中感受英语，体现交际教学的理念与要求。
这套教材的推广为教师根据学生与教学实际设计教学活动提供了肥沃的土壤。
四、教育学基础现代教育的代言人杜威在《民本主义与教育》中明确阐述教法与教材的统一，强调目的与活动的统一，主张“在做中学”，“在问题中学习”。
他认为教学的任务不仅在于教给学生科学的结论，更重要的是要促进并激发学生的思维，使他们掌握发现真理、解决问题的科学方法。
他所主张的教育是没有目的的，是让学生在问题的情境中自己探索，自己改造和改组经验，自己得出结论，从而得到发展。
以罗杰斯（Carl Rogers）为代表的人本主义的学习理论主张学习是发挥人的潜能，实现人的价值的过程，要求学生愉快地创造性学习。
人文主义的课程论主张，教学过程应该是解决问题的过程，成为思想训练的过程，成为学习“学习方法”的过程。
以活动为中心组织课程教学，在愉快、轻松的活动中展开课程，完成教学。
马斯洛、罗杰斯更强调教育应培养“自我实现的人格”，这种人格是情绪、感情、态度、价值等的“情感发展”与理智、知识，理解等“认知发展”的统一，从而使人的本性，人的尊严，人的潜能在教育过程中得到实现和发展。
这些教育学理论都为“以活动为中心,学生自主学习”型教学模式的探索提供了广泛的理论基础。
五、实施原则我们的教育不仅要培养成绩优异的学生，而且还要帮助每个学生获得最好的理智发展。
“以活动为中心,学生自主学习”型教学模式不应仅仅是帮助实现教学目标的工具，而且要遵循现代学生认识的发展顺序，帮助学生实现认知的飞跃。
教师在实际教学中设计的活动应该是学生能够接受，愿意接受，主动探求的形式，应始终贯穿以下原则：1. 趣味性原则。
在新课程标准中分级制定了情感目标。
教学中一定要注意激发学生的学习热情，使他们树立自信心，主动求知。
2.实践性原则。
主体的实践性活动、直接经验对学生身心发展具有决定性的影响。
教师应通过设计丰富多彩的活动，引导学生用眼、用口、用手、用脑，在活动中启发多种感官去获得直接经验，增加感性认识。
通过完成具有挑战的活动任务，让学生在亲身实践和实际体验中，独立思考，积极参与，提高解决实际问题的能力。
3. 自主学习原则。
使全体学生都成为活动的主体，这是衡最活动教学成功与否的标志。
要求教师确立学生在活动中的主体地位，尊重学生的自主权，尊重他们独特的思维方式和活动方式，尊重和保证活动的独立性与差异性，让学生积极地、自主地、创造性地活动和发展，真正使学生成为自己学习和活动的主人。
4.生活性原则。
在活动的设计中，要注重通过日常生活中具体的经验与生活来学习，要在经验的范围内发现适合于学生学习的材料，注重选择有可能引起新经验的知识点；注意选择与学生生活贴近的大自然和社会生活来展开教学，使他们有更多的对生活的实际感受和与现实、大自然的直接接触，让他们从现实和生活经验中发现课题，在多样的、具体的生活经验中培养“用英语做事的能力”。
5.序列原则。
即按最佳顺序呈现教学内容，由于学生的认知发展水平、动机状态、知识背景都可能产生影响教学序列的作用。
因而，根据教学的需要应进行必要的调整。
6. 开放性原则。
活动教学过程是一种开放的过程，这主要体现在教学环境和氛围的创设上，一是开放的人文环境，要求营造出民主的，为学生所接纳的、无威胁的、富于创造性、主体性发挥的师生氛围，使学生形成一种自由的、无所畏惧、独立的探索心态，以激发学生参与各种活动的积极性，因为学生的学习积极性与满足感是在一种允许提问与自由探索环境中获得的；二是开放的时空环境，表现在时间上不限制在一节课和在校学习时间，空间上重视教室内环境的灵活安排与组合，同时将课堂引向社会和大自然，利用更为广泛的教育资源，使学生得到最为广泛的关注与发展。
7. 合作性原则。
“以活动为中心,学生自主学习”型教学模式是以学生活动为中心进行的一种同伴间交往互助，合作交流。
通过合作，学生能够相互学习，齐心协力解决问题。
有助于培养学生的合作精神，提高沟通能力、学习适应能力和社会适应性。
合作还应包括师生共同优化教学的过程。
教师要关爱每个学生，从学生的心理需求和认知水平出发，设计出学生喜闻乐见的活动，以情促知。
在活动过程中及时给与学生指导和帮助，对他们的成绩给与积极地评价，尽量排除他们的心理障碍。
教学活动中师生的和谐交往可以激发学生对认知的兴趣，对学习的热爱。
教师亲切的话语及与学生平等的关系，使学生在轻松愉悦的意境中提高运用英语的能力。
六、与计算机辅助教学系统（CAI）的整合培养学生实际运用英语的能力还要求新科技的辅助。
英语课堂往往有许多异域的生活场景是学生没有生活体验的，教师用语言来描绘有时也缺乏形象性。
这时电脑多媒体技术就能大展身手了。
计算机辅助教学系统（CAI）将教学内容、教学经验和计算机技术紧密地结合在一起，成为创设真实语言环境的物质基础，这可以将学生带进所要涉及的语言氛围中，使学生身临其境地学习知识，运用语言。
因此可以借助CAI系统，一方面这样可以引起学生对研究对象的浓厚兴趣，激发学生探求知识的欲望；另一方面，也可以大大丰富学生的表象，有利于学生展开形象思维，对于学生右脑的开发，直觉思维能力的培养有重要作用。
七、主要的活动方式“以活动为中心,学生自主学习”型教学模式主张"以活动促发展"的思想，明确提出了以活动的方式作为教学基本方式，这是对传统课堂教学的一次革命性变革，其目的是为了更好地促进学生的发展。
因此，活动教学中活动方式的选择，必须立足于能促进学生素质能力的培养，使学生自主参与学习过程，并通过主体实践活动圆满完成认识与发展任务。
由于学生素质发展是多层次、多侧面的，活动方式也必然呈现出多种形态。
在活动教学中主要为：1. 信息差的活动。
例如：在七年级下册Unit 7 What does he look like? 一课中可以设计“寻人”的活动。
情景：(1) 假设一名学生是公园里的保安，另一名学生找不到自己的妹妹／弟弟，前来求助。
(2) 一个学生扮演警察，另一人扮演刚被坏人抢走背包的受害者，前来报警。
(3) 一个学生请另一个学生帮忙，去机场接自己的外国笔友。
活动方式：学生两人一组，合作编排情境对话并表演出来。
目的：准确地表述出人物的外貌特征。
2. 游戏竞赛类的活动。
例如：在七年级下册Unit 4 I want to be an actor. 一课中可以设计“猜职业”的游戏。
活动方式：小组活动，每组给一些写有职业名称的单词卡片，让一个组员提问“What do you do?”,根据另一个组员的肢体语言表演，猜出卡片上的词汇。
哪一组在单位时间里猜出的最多，哪一组取胜。
目的：强化新词汇，操练询问职业的句型，培养集体荣誉感。
3. 分析解决问题型的活动。
例如：在八年级下册Unit 7 Would you mind turning down themusic? 一课中可以设计一个“为创建文明班集体提建议”的活动。
情景：学校号召我们争创文明班集体，我们要争创第一。
想一想班上还存在那些不足，怎样礼貌地提出你的建议？活动方式：两人一组，一个学生表演班上存在的不足，另一个用句型“Would you mind ...”提出建议。
目的：在操练新句型的同时，对学生进行文明教育。
4. 调研型活动。
例如：在七年级下册Unit 8 I'd like some noodles. 一课中可以设计“饮食与健康”的调查。
情景：在班上做一次调查，采访同学们的一日三餐的饮食情况。
看看那些食物有益健康，那些食物应该少吃。
活动方式：课内外相结合，自己设计调查问卷，完成调查报告，得出结论。
目的：学会就“饮食”的话题自由交际，同时进行健康教育。
5. 合作型活动。
例如：在八年级上册Unit 3 What are doing for vacation? 一课中可以接合七年级下册Unit 10 Where did you go on vacation? 的内容，让同学们办一期以“Vacation”为主题的英语板报。
