高中英语Unit 3 Amazing people Section 1 A text

Unit 3 Amazing peoplePart Two Teaching Resources第二部分教学资源Section 1: A text structure analysis of THE CURSE OF THE MUMMY I. Type of writing and summary of THE CURSE OF THE MUMMYII. A retold version of the text THE CURSE OF THE MUMMY Howard Carter is one of the most famous explorers the world has ever known. He was bright and curious about the world outside his hometown when he was very young. By the 1920s, he had become an explorer, searching for the tombs of the Egyptian kings. In 1922, Howard Carter made his most amazing discovery of all, in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt, where he found the tomb of King Tutankhamun. However, not long after the tomb had been opened, people in Carter’s team began to fall ill and die strangely. Within seven years, 21 people who had something to do with the opening of the tomb died. Some people say the deaths were just coincidence. Others believe that they were the result of the mummy’s curse. However, still others believe that there is a scientific explanation, because inside the tombs there are many viruses.●Section 2: Background informationI. Background information about mummy and Howard CarterWhat are mummies? When you think of a mummy what comes to mind? Most of us usually picturean Egyptian mummy wrapped in bandages and buried deep inside a pyramid. While the Egyptian ones are the most famous, mummies have been found inmany places throughout the world, from Greenland to China to the AndesMountains of South America.A mummy is the body of a person (or an animal) that has been preserved after death. Normally when we die, bacteria and other germs eat away at the soft tissues (such as skin and muscles) leaving only the bones behind. Since bacteria need water in order to grow, mummification usually happens if the body dries out quickly after death. The body may then be so well preserved that we can even tell how the dead person may have looked in life.Mummies are made naturally or by embalming, which is any process that people use to help preserve a dead body. Mummies can be dried out by extreme cold, by the sun, by smoke, or using chemicals such as natron. Some bodies become mummies because there were favorable natural conditions when they died. Others were preserved and buried with great care. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummifying a person's body after death was essential to ensure a safe passage to the afterlife. How are mummies made?Mummification in ancient Egypt was a very long and expensive process. From start to finish, it took about seventy days to embalm a body. Since the Egyptians believed that mummification was essential for passage to the afterlife, people were mummified and buried as well as they could possibly afford. High-ranking officials, priests and other nobles who had served the pharaoh andhis queen had fairly elaborate burials. The pharaohs, who were believed to become gods when they died, had the most magnificent burials of all. In the case of a royal or noble burial, the embalmers set up workshops near the tomb of the mummy. The art of Egyptian mummification consisted of many steps. First, the body was washed and ritually purified. The next step was to remove the deceased person's inner organs. A slit was cut into the left side of the body so that the embalmers could remove the intestines, the liver, the stomach and the lungs. Each of these organs was embalmed using natron, which served to dry out the organs and discourage bacteria from decaying the tissues. The organs were then individually wrapped using long strips of linen and placed in jars. The lids of these jars were fashioned after the four sons of Horus, who were each entrusted with protecting a particular organ.Who are the mummies?Over time almost all Egyptians who could afford to becamemummies when they died -- a total of about 70 millionmummies in 3,000 years. By the 4th century AD, manyEgyptians had become Christians and no longer believedthat mummification was necessary for life after death.Eventually, the Egyptians gave up the art and science of making mummies. So where did all the mummies go? Sadly, most were plundered in ancient times by grave robbers and vandals looking for treasures wrapped up in the bandages. Countless mummies were also destroyed during the Middle Ages, when they were ground into powders to make supposedly magical potions. Later on, modern treasure hunters blundered into their tombs looking for artifacts and souvenirs. Even industry aided the destruction by using mummies' bandages to make paper or burning their bodies for fuel. The best preserved mummies are those of the pharaohs and their relatives. These mummies tended to be more carefully embalmed and protected from harm. The mummies that have survived allow us to look back into the past and know something of the ancient Egyptians and their time. Three of the most famous Egyptians mummies are Tutankhamen, Seti I and Rameses II (Ramses the Great).Tutankhamun's TombTutankhamun's tomb is located in the Valley of the Kings between the tombs of Rameses II and Rameses IV. Although robbers probably entered the tomb at least twice in antiquity, its contents were virtually intact when it was discovered by Howard Carter.II. Background information about AstronautsChina's First Astronaut Crowned "Space Hero"China's first astronaut Yang Liwei was conferred the titleof "Space Hero" on Friday at a high-profile rallycelebrating the country's first manned space flight.Yang, 38, was also awarded a badge of honor for hisspace faring merits at the rally organized by the CentralCommittee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), theState Council and the Central Military Commission. At the rally attended by top leaders of the countryand several thousand others, including space experts, government officials and servicemen, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao announced the decision by the Party, the central government and the military commission to honor Yang Liwei.Jiang Zemin, chairman of the military commission, presented the certificate of "Space Hero" and the badge to Yang Liwei.Addressing the rally, President Hu Jintao praised Yang and others who contributed to the country's manned space program.China will work with the international community for peaceful use of outer space, said the president, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.China launched its Shenzhou-5 manned spacecraft, with astronaut Yang Liwei aboard, on Oct. 15 from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province, northwest China.Yang and his spacecraft orbited the Earth 14 times before safely landing in north China the next day.The successful launch and return of the spacecraft made China the third country in space after Russia and the United States, and marked the initial success of the manned space program launched in1992.Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968)Yuri Gagarin, a Russian, was the first man who went into space.
