I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.” With little hesitation, I devoted the next five years of my life to the project.I never walked through any shabby (破旧的) neighborhoods. From one end of my map to the other, all houses were well looked after. People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage (正面). I discovered that pigs are a popular decorative element throughout the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts, and even swimming costumes.Every outing has its wonders. Never assume a neighborhood has little of interest to offer. You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while walking out ? A puzzle. As my project progressed, I felt like I owned the city. I could get off at any subway station and my feet remembered the route to the best shops. There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel more light-hearted than when I left.Anyone can get in on this walking game. I admit with some shame. I used to huddle (蜷缩) in my part of town, feeling isolated, but walking its streets has truly opened my eyes to Montreal’s full menu. Now I’m quite satisfied with what I obtain. So just head to a neighborhood to nose around. I can assure you that you’ll feel like a pioneer with the discoveries you bring back. 4.Why did the author decide to walk the streets of Montreal?A.She wanted to collect strange things.B.She wanted to do some research.C.She had to conduct a project.D.She drew inspiration from an article.5.What do we know about the neighborhoods in Montreal?A.The shabby houses are abandoned.B.People enjoy dressing up as pigs.C.People enjoy decorating their houses.D.All the houses are equal in length.6.What amazed the author during her trips?A.The houses in good condition.B.The clothes left on sidewalks.C.The routes of subway stations.D.The animals walking on the streets.7.How did the author feel on her walk?A.Cheerful and content.B.Excited and energetic.C.Relieved and grateful.D.Puzzled and upset.Jackdaws (寒鸦) are the smallest member of the crow family. They often live in a crowd. Indeed, when cold weather comes, they gather in the hundreds (and sometimes thousands) every evening so that they can sleep in the same place. If you’ve ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and morning departures, you’ll know they are not quiet birds. Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?A team of the Cornish Jackdaw Project set out to determine why jackdaws are so noisy before they depart from their sleeping spot. The team’s theory was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of“voting”. The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!”s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’natural morning calls. Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done. Subsequent experiments confirmed their expectation. The team therefore showed that jackdaws use their calls as a sort of voting system. You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.So the loud calls of jackdaws in the morning are therefore not the pure chaos it sounds like. If you are ever being driven mad by the sound in the morning, you can find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they will leave you in peace.8.What aspect of jackdaws confused scientists?A.Their strong team spirit.B.Their preference for noisy habitats.C.Their collective sleeping habit.D.Their unusual calling behavior.9.What happened to the jackdaws when artificial calls were added?A.They stopped calling together.B.They left their sleeping spot earlier.C.They became noisier and more active.D.They changed their sleeping location. 10.What does the voting system mean to individual jackdaws?A.A signal of seeking food.B.A strategy for better survival.C.A way to attract potential partners.D.A method of displaying social skills. 11.What can be the best title for the text?A.Jackdaws are Noise Makers.B.Jackdaws Have a Complex V oting System.C.Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.D.Jackdaws ‘V ote’ to Choose Their Group Leaders. It was extremely generous of the people of France to give the American people the Statue of Liberty, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation ofEuro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism (殖民主义)”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France have ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the center of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top-class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States. All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture — like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom. However, until that day arrives we won’t be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.12.What is many French people’s attitude toward Euro Disney?A.They are unhappy with it.B.They show no interest in it.C.They warmly welcome it.D.They think it a reward for the Statue ofLiberty.13.Why did the Americans choose to build Euro Disney near Paris?A.It was a culturally logical decision.B.It symbolized the two countries’ friendship.C.There were no theme parks near Paris.D.The location had a geographical advantage. 14.What does the underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Partner.B.Competitor.C.Neighbor.D.Customer. 15.Which of the following is the author’s opinion?A.Euro Disney can’t provide real American service.B.Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.C.Theme parks should accept popular heroes.D.American culture isn’t popular around the world.Sometimes, it’s good to be bored“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom. 16 That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? 17 In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “ 18 ” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever. The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “ 19 ” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.20 The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.A.And there is, of course, bad boredom.B.Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.C.But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?D.These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.E.Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.F.We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.G.When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.二、完形填空On a June morning, Nicolo 21 working the whole night at a factory in Turin. The rest of the days we would practice in the pool what we’d learned with our coach. Every day, we had to dress ourselves up in a tight diving suit and a jacket with a heavy steel tank(钢瓶) on the back. This isn’t how most people would imagine spending their vacation at the beach, but we really enjoyed it. Different from snorkeling(浮潜) in a life jacket, we were able to get away and explore underwater, swimming with turtles and other beautiful sea creatures. As US journalist James Nestor wrote in his book Deep(《深海》, 2015), “There are no mobile phones down there, … no car keys to lose, no terrorist threats(恐怖主义威胁)… All the stress, noise, and distractions(烦心事) of life are left at the surface.”The experience also allowed us to get to know ourselves better. We had to pay attention to how we breathed, because even a little bit of difference in the amount of air we breathed in or out could change our buoyancy. By doing so, we started to realize how we’d been taking it for granted(想当然) and had never truly “felt” ourselves breathe. Now I no longer have any doubt about the attraction of diving. In fact, my friends and I are already planning another diving trip, probably to the Red Sea in Egypt. Maybe these kinds of waste have made a big mess when you’ve thrown them away before.Shi Yuan, 14, from Shanghai Wenlai Middle School, has made a special bag to solve this problem. The plastic bag has a band of adhesive tape(粘贴带). When one end of the tape is open, the bag can be turned upside-down. You can hold the bottom end and easily throw wet garbage into a trash can.Shi came up with the idea after an unpleasant experience in which he got wet waste all over his pants while throwing it away. He found that many other people had the same problem. He became determined to solve this issue and invented his special bag.He first thought about using a gunny (麻布) bag or placing a bag break on his trash cans. But neither of these ideas worked. So he decided to just design his own garbage bag. “I didn’t want to put any extra burden (负担) on the bag, so I used adhesive tape,” Shi said. However, the original bag was a one-off product (一次性产品) and not environmentally friendly. So Shi kept on improving his design. He remembered reading about the adhesiveused for Post-it notes (便利贴). Shi thought this weak glue could be used for the adhesive tape and allow the garbage bag to be reused.Shi’s bag has become popular in many communities. He has already sold 2 million bags online. His father is quite proud of him.“Kids like to play. Shi just changed the way he ‘plays’ and put his mind toward exploring a way to make life easier,” Shi’s father said.41.Shi’s bag makes it easier to ________.A.find one-off products B.clean garbage cansC.throw away wet waste D.throw away plastic42.Shi decided to design the bag because ________.A.he thought he could make money B.common waste bags caused him trouble C.he thought plastic bags were too expensive D.he wanted to design a recyclable bag43.The underlined phrase “became determined” is closest in meaning to ________.A.made up his mind B.became worried C.was interestedD.was doubtful44.Paragraph 5 explains ________.A.why Shi used a gunny sack to make the bag B.why Shi’s bag is better thancommon bagsC.how Shi’s bag helped with his problem D.how Shi made his bag environmentally friendly45.What do we know about Shi from the story?A.He won a prize for his own creation.B.He likes to play rather than study.C.His father didn’t support his work.D.His creation has helped a lot of people. It is the year 1026, the time of the Song Dynasty. You are training to become a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor. You are about to take your final exam. What kind of thing will you face?During the Song Dynasty, doctors needed to show they understood meridians (经络)— paths of energy running through the body.If you were the one to take the exam, you would be asked to show how you would treat symptoms (症状) on a life-sized model covered in wax (蜡). Under the wax, the model wouldbe made of bronze (铜), filled with water, and covered in holes running along the meridian paths. You would need to place an acupuncture needle(针灸用的针) into the correct part of a meridian to pass the exam. If you got it right, the needle would go straight through the hole, and water would pour out of the model. If you picked the wrong spot, the needle would hit the bronze model and that would be that — failed. The exams wanted to make sure all young doctors knew how to treat patients by hitting the same correct acupuncture points. The first “bronze man” acupuncture model was made in 1026 by one of the great doctors named Wang Weiyi. Wang also wrote a book that was used across the country to teach how to use the model. Now you can see a copy of one of these bronze men in China’s National Museum.46.Why was there wax on the model?A.Because the model was totally made of wax.B.Because wax stopped the test takers seeing the holes.C.Because wax can protect the model well.D.Because the meridians of the body were covered with wax.47.What would happen if a test taker put his needle into a wrong point?A.The water would pour out of the model.B.There would be one more hole in the bronze model.C.The needle wouldn’t go straight through the hole.D.The hole would be covered with wax.48.From the last paragraph, we learn that ________.A.Wang Weiyi invented the bronze man to test doctors B.Wang Weiyi was ateacher in the Song DynastyC.doctors now still take the bronze man test D.we can’t see any of the bronze men now49.What does the story mainly talk about?A.Why TCM is still popular now.B.The invention of the acupuncture needle C.How doctors in the Song Dynasty treated different symptoms.D.The exam for the TCM doctors in the Song Dynasty.50.The exams mentioned aimed to test ________.A.if the doctors could find acupuncture points correctlyB.how energy ran through a human’s bodyC.if the tester knew how to treat different symptomsD.whether acupuncture worked well in treating a patientLast January, my wife received a 1,000-piece jigsaw (拼图) puzzle as a birthday gift from some dear friends. The puzzle was of a cabin by the lake that looked like the one we live in. We were not sure when we would actually do the puzzle, but it was nice to have it in case the need arose. Then the need arose. On the 16th day of our isolation (隔离), we cut the box open and ceremoniously (郑重地) dumped (倒) the pieces on the table. We knew the drill. We tackled the frame first and then the large objects with distinctive lines and colors. My wife primarily used the color and shape of the pieces to solve the puzzle; I relied more heavily on the picture on the box as a guide. And so began our odyssey (漫长的历程) of the puzzle.I came to know every piece of that puzzle more intimately than I have known anything in my life. Some pieces found a home in the puzzle the first time I picked them up. Others hung around for more than a week until the puzzle filled in enough to be properly placed. But once a piece joined the collective (整体), it lost its individuality and blended into the puzzle to complete the picture. What is a jigsaw? First and foremost, it is a puzzle to be solved. But unlike many puzzles, it can be solved eventually with some talent and a sufficient (充足的) reserve (储备) of stubborn determination. In our case, three to four hours a day for 16 days.Ultimately (根本上), a jigsaw puzzle is a testament (证明) to one’s character. You usually complete this time-consuming but ultimately useless task for no better reason than not quitting. I documented the odyssey on Facebook and received both encouragement along the way and hearty congratulations upon our eventual success. So what to do with the completed puzzle? The only reasonable option seemed to be tobreak it up and put it back in the box. It took 16 days to put the puzzle together and only two minutes to tear it apart.Once our pieces were back in the box, it became apparent (显而易见的) that the goal was never to complete the puzzle at all. Rather it was merely a mechanism (方法) to kill time. In this way, jigsaw puzzles are like life itself: It’s all about the journey; the destination is, in fact, of little importance.51.Why did the author and his wife decide to do a jigsaw puzzle?A.Their friends encouraged them to do so.B.They were attracted by the picture on the box.C.They wanted to kill time during isolation.D.They wanted to document it on Facebook.52.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.How the couple solved the jigsaw puzzle.B.How the couple felt about doing the jigsaw puzzle.C.The support the couple got from friends while doing the jigsaw puzzle.D.The problems the couple came across doing the jigsaw puzzle.53.How did other people respond to the couple’s completion of the puzzle?A.They made fun of their efficiency.B.They were pleased for them.C.They persuaded them to tear it apart.D.They considered it meaningless. 54.What does the author want to tell us from this article?A.It is helpful to do jigsaw puzzles.B.Determination matters in life.C.It takes patience to achieve success.D.The process matters more than the result. 55.What can be the best title for the story?A.A wonderful birthday gift B.How to play with jigsaw puzzlesC.Playing with jigsaw puzzles D.Ways to kill time during isolation四、五选五Whether you will be a doctor or a police officer in the future, there are teachers in your life right now. 56 Of course, you want to thank them.Teachers’ Day is the perfect chance for students around the world to thank their teachers.57In China, Teachers’ Day is on Sept 10. But in the US, teachers have a whole week to celebrate. Teacher Appreciation Week is in the first full week of May every year. 58 Now, they bring gifts with pictures of apples, such as mugs, picture frames and teddy bears. Some students also make DIY gifts for their teachers. During the week, school clubs often offer teachers free breakfast or a cup of coffee.South Korea’s Teachers’ Day is on May 15. Many students offer carnations (康乃馨)to their teachers. 59 Thousands of students prepare personalized cards and give them to their favorite teachers.Although different countries have different Teachers’ Days, there’s one day for the whole world to honor teachers. On Oct 5 of every year, over 100 countries, such as Canada and the Philippines, express their thanks by celebrating World Teachers’ Day. UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) started the day in 1994. 60A.Cards are also a traditional gift.B.The festival falls on different days in different countries.C.It wants to remind people of the importance of the teachers.D.They teach you and help you to know who you are.E.Kids used to bring apples for their teachers because apples are healthy.五、用单词的适当形式完成短文阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
