中英双语美文欣赏之一位母亲写给女儿的信英语栏目为您推荐“中英双语美文欣赏之一位母亲写给女儿的信”,希望能帮助到您!dear girls,我亲爱的孩子们,you're so young right now, but i hope these letters will be helpful to you one day when you're older. there is so much i wish i could ask my mother now that i am a grown woman. there is so much we never got to talk about. i'm planning on being around for you well into your lives and adulthood, but even so, i think having these letters will be useful in some way. who knows how things might change down the road, and at least you'll have your 34-year-old mother's thoughts down on paper.

anyway, i want this letter to be about beauty and my relationship to it. i feel this enormous responsibility, as a mother of two little girls, to lead you down a path that is relatively healthy when it comes to beauty and self image. in a lot of women's eyes i've probably already failed in that respect due to the amount of pink-princess-barbie mess cluttering up vera's room right now.

Dear dad,A tide of emotion rose and directly touched my heart as I was reading the letter full of your loving tenderness. Despite blessed with a thoughtful father and your fatherly concern, I used to be a naughty girl who took everything for granted. With the passage of time, I grew up, gradually realizing your meticulous care, gradually becoming clear about my goal, gradually learning to cherish every moment in my life.Few months ago, I graduated from high school, secure in the knowledge that I had been admitted to Columbia, yet it was just the beginning of my coming brilliant college time when I wanted to follow my passion. Dad, I appreciate the full support you give for me to create my dots, thus helping me find my calling and connect a gorgeous curve someday. Nevertheless, as far as I believe, it is a must to exert myself in classes in the meantime, no matter how hard it will be. What’s more, in the process of exploration, as you told me, I will come to learn the way of critical thinking and self-directed learning, which will be the parts of me.Altogether, college time won’t be wandered away and I won’t let you down. It’s not far to seek that the priceless treasure we own is friendship. Thank you for reminding me of some old friends and teaching me to be sincere and genuine. I will also rate it as the creed I live by. We shape our world with kindness and affection at the simplest moments every day. As to my beloved sister, the adorable girl who I grew up with, the bond between us is believed not to weaken.Dad, you inspired me and strengthened my belief that we are the masters of our life and our future, and it’s none other than we ourselves that are writing our destiny. While none of us knows what the future holds in store for us, we should take comfort in knowing that we are in command of our life. Every now and then, we can’t choose what we are given, but what we are to do about it determines what we will gain in the end.I could take care of myself.Don’t worry much about me.Love,Daughter。

Letterto+Daughter

Letter to DaughterOct. 9, 2009 Dear Daughter,As we drove off from Columbia, I decided to write you a letter to tell you all that is on my mind. First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Admission to Columbia is a real testament to your academic, artistic and social abilities. Whether it was getting the highest grade in Calculus, completing your elegant fashion design, successfully selling your painted running shoes, or becoming one of the top orators in the Model United Nations, you have become a talented and accomplished young woman. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.I will always remember the first time I held you in my arms. I felt a tingling sensation in my heart tha t must have been our “father-daughter connection” which will bind us for life. I remember singing you a lullaby while I rocked you to sleep. You have been a wonderful daughter ever since you were born, always quiet, empathetic, attentive, and well-mannered. I remember my daughter of three following us around every weekend to get building supplies. You put up with that boring period without a fuss, happily eating hamburgers in the car and singing with Barney until you fell asleep. You even went to Sunday Chinese school and studied hard even though it was no fun for you. I cannot believe how lucky we are as parents to have a daughter like you.You have been an excellent elder sister. Sometimes the two of you argued, but in the last few years you have become best friends. Your sister adores you and looks up to you as her role model. As you saw when we departed, she will miss you so much. There is nothing like family, and other than your parents, your sister is the one person who you can always confide in. There is nothing we wish more than that your sisterhood will continue to bond as you grow older, and that you will care for each other throughout your lives. While you are at college, do have a short video chat with her or email her every few days.College will be the most important years in your life. You often question “what good is this course”.While you should remain inquisitive, always remember that “education is what you have left after all that is taught is forgotten”.In college you will move from being teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become a self-directed learner. Please take each subject seriously, for evenif what you learn isn’t critical for your life, the skills of learning will be something you cherish forever.Do not fall into the trap of dogma. There is no single simple answer to any question. Remember your high school debate class, when I told you to argue the side that you did n’t believe in I did that to show you things are rar ely “black and white”, and a problem can always be looked at from different perspectives. This is “critical thinking”, and it is the most important skill you need in life. You must also become tolerant and supportive of others. I remember when I proposed a new dissertation topic to my . advisor. He said “I don’t fully agree with you, but I’ll support you.”I have come to learn this isn’t just flexibility but is supportive of critical thinking. This is an empowering style of leadership that I try to follow. I hope you will too.Follow your passion in college and take courses you will enjoy. Steve Jobs said when you are in college, your passion will create many dots, and later in your life you will connect them. In his great commencement speech at Stanford, Jobs spoke of his calligraphy class, and how a decade later it became the basis for the beautiful Macintosh fonts, which later ignited desktop publishing and brought fabulous tools like Microsoft Word to our lives. His expedition into calligraphy was a dot, and the Macintosh became the connecting line. Do not worry excessively what career you will have, and don’t be too utilitarian. If you like Japanese, go for it, even if your dad thinks “it’s not useful.” Enjoy picking your dots, and be assured one day you will find your calling, and connect a gorgeous curve through the dots.Exert yourself in classe s, but don’t let pressure upset you. Your mother and I have no expectations for your grades. If you graduate and educate yourself in your four years, we will feel happy. Your Columbia degree will take you far, even if you don’t graduate with honors. The only thing that matters is that you have learned and the only metric you should use is that you have tried. Grades are just silly letters that vain people brag about, and lazy people dread. You are too good to be either. Most importantly, make friends and be happy. College friends will be the best in your life because they are not only physically closer than your family but the bonds will be strong as you gain independence and enter adulthood together. Choose friends who are genuine and sincere to you. Don’t worry about their hobbies or even their personalities. Be self-assured, outgoing and proactive. Keep your high school friends and stay connected to them, but do not use them as substitutes for college friendship. You have chosen wonderful friends from high school, so trust your instincts. Give people the benefit of the doubt; don’t stereotype and alwaysforgive. People are imperfect, so as long as they are genuine and sincere, trust them and be good to them. This is my secret of success –I am genuine with people and trust them (unless they do something to lose my trust). Sometimes I am taken advantage of by dishonest people but that loss is nothing compared to what I have gained from being open. Whether it is for management, work, or friendship, this is something you should ponder.Whatever decisions that confront you, you must take control of your life. I used to help you, whether it was in extracurricular activities or your college application. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for you to be in the driver’s seat. I remember the exhilarating feeling when I took real control of my life by deciding to leave academia for Apple, and then go to China and work for Google. Later I decided to start my own business. Being able to decide means you get to live the life you want to.I told your mom I’m writing this letter, and asked what she wanted me to say. She thought and said: “just ask her to take care of herself.” Simple but deeply caring –that is how your mother is. In this short sentence is her hope that you will become independent in the way you look after yourself – whether it be getting sufficient sleep, following a balanced diet, taking some exercise, or seeing a doctor whenever you are ill. An ancient Chinese proverb goes that the best way to be nice to your parents is to take care of yourself. This is because your parents love you so much, and that if you are well, they will have comfort. You will understand this one day when you become a mother. But in the meantime, please listen to your mother and take care of yourself.College is the four years where you have:• the greatest amount of free time• the first chance to be independent• the most flexibility to change• the lowest risk for making mistakesSo please treasure your college years – make the best of your free time, become an independent thinker in control of your destiny, evolve yourself into a bi-cultural talent and be bold to experiment, learn and grow through your successes and challenges. When I faced the greatest challenge and opportunity in my life in 2005, you gave me a big hug and said “bonne chance”, which means “good luck” and “good courage”. Now I do the same for you. Bonne chance, my angel and princess. May Columbia become the happiest four years in your life, and may you blossom into just what you dream to be.Love,Dad (& Mom)。

as we drove off from columbia, i wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind.

first, i want to tell you how proud we are. getting into columbia is a real testament of what a great well-rounded student you are. your academic, artistic, and social skills
have truly blossomed in the last few years. whether it is getting the highest grade in calculus, completing your elegant fashion design, successfully selling your painted running shoes, or becoming one of the top orators in model united nations, you have become a talented and accomplished young woman. you should be as proud of yourself as we are.

i will always remember the first moment i held you in my arms. i felt a tingling sensation that directly touched my heart. it was an intoxicating feeling i will always have. it must be that “father-daughter connection” which will bind us for life. i will always remember singing you lullaby while i rocked you to sleep. when i put you down, it was always with both relief (she finally fell asleep!) and regret (wishing i could hold you longer). and i will always remember taking you
to the playground, and watching you having so much fun. you were so cute and adorable, and that is why everybody loved you so.

you have been a great kid ever since you were born, always quiet, empathetic, attentive, and well-mannered. you were three when we built our house. i remember you quietly followed us every weekend for more than ten hours a day to get building supplies. you put up with that boring period without a fuss, happily ate hamburgers every meal in the car, sang with barney until you fell asleep. when you went to sunday chinese school, you studied hard even though it was no fun for you. i cannot believe how lucky we are as parents to have a daughter like you.

you have been an excellent elder sister. even though you two had your share of fights, the last few years you have become best friends. your sister loves you so much, and she loves to make you laugh. she looks up to you, and sees you as her role model. as you saw when we departed, she misses you so much. and i know that you miss her just as much. there is nothing like family, and other than your parents, your sister is the one person who you can trust and confide in. she will be the one to take care of you, and the one you must take care of. there is nothing we wish more than that your sisterhood will continue to bond as you grow older, and that you will take care of each other throughout your lives. for the next four years, do have a short video chat with her every few days, and do email her when you have a chance.。
