He was thoroughly American. He grew up on the Virginia border and it was there, at Monticello, in Albermarle County, that he made his home. He always kept the simple manners of the western border. A tall man with red hair, blue eyes and a large, friendly mouth, he was so open and friendly and lively that he attracted the affection and the loyalty of his followers. He was a Virginia planter, and was very fond of his plantation and of farming. “Those who labor in the earth,” he once wrote, “are the chosen people of God,” and he never lost faith in the farmers of5the nation. All his life he was interested in the problems of agriculture, in the introduction of new plants, new kinds of cattle and sheep, and in the development of scientific farming. But Jefferson was more than a political leader and a farmer. He was a man with many talents. He was an architect, a scholar, a philosopher. He designed not only his own house, the beautiful Monticello, but also the buildings of the University of Virginia, of which he was the founder. As a scientist he built at Monticello his own laboratory and there carried on experiments. His interests in science took a practical turn; he invented the swivel chair which we use today, and the folding door, which is used on many streetcars now, and the dumb-waiter, a small elevator commonly used to lift dished from a basement kitchen to the dining room on an upper floor. He designed an improved plow(犁). He was a one of the great scholars of his age, perhaps the most widely read man in America; and his library later formed the foundation of the Library of Congress. He translated Greek books and made dictionaries of Indian languages. He wrote articles on government and on religion, and, as President, sent out scientific and exploring expeditions.39. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?A. Jefferson designed his house and the buildings of the University of Virginia.B. Jefferson was a political leader and a farmer.C. A widely Read LeaderBBanks view online banking as a powerful “value-added” tool to attract and keep new customers while helping to eliminate costly paper handing or teller(出纳员)interaction in an increasingly competitive banking environment.Today, most large national banks, many local banks and credit unions offer some form of online banking, variously known as PC banking, home banking, electronic banking or Internet banking. Online banks are sometimes referred to as “brick-to-click”banks, both to tell them from “brick-to-mortar”banks that haven’t yet offered online banking, as well as from “virtual” banks that have no physical branches or tellers whatsoever.7The challenge for the banking industry has been to design this new service channel in such a way that its customers will readily learn to use and trust it. Most of the large banks can now offer fully safe, fully functional online banking for free or for a small cost. As more banks succeed, online and more customers use their sites, fully functional online banking will likely become as commonplace as automated teller machines.Online banking has a lot of advantages. Unlike your corner bank, online banking sites never close; they’re at hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they’re a mouse click away. If you’re out of state or even out of the country when a money problem appears, you can logon instantly to your online bank and take care of business. Online bank sites generally carry out and confirm deals at or quicker than ATM processing speeds. Many online banking sites now offer fashionable tools to help you manage all of your valuable items more effectively.42. The word “eliminate” in the first paragraph probably means _______.A. moveB. removeC. reduceD. improve43. What is the challenge for the banking industry according to the text?A. T o make online banking attractive.B. To open new services all over the world.C. T o offer online banking for free.D. T o take care of business 24 hours a day.844. From the passage we can conclude that _______.A. “brick-to-click” banks are in fact another kind of physical banksB. the function of a “brick-to-click” bank is as common as an ATMC. a “brick-to-mortar” bank is no better than a virtual oneD. customers can deal with their banking by a mouse click45. What would be the best title for this passage?A. Banking of Various FormsB. Improvement of Banking IndustryC. Development of Online BankingD. Functions of the “brick-to-click” BankⅣ. But the study found women with high levels of vitamin D had c omparatively longer telomeres --- a sign of being biologically younger and healthier. The study suggests vitamin D may help to slow down the agei ng process of DNA, and therefore the ageing process as a wh ole.Lead researcher Dr Brent Richards said: "These results are e xciting because they prove for the first time that people who h ave higher levels of vitamin D may age more slowly than peop le with lower levels of vitamin D."This could help to explain how vitamin D has a protective effe ct on many ageing related diseases, such as heart disease an d cancer."He said further studies are required to prove the findings. Professor Tim Spector, head of KCL's twin research unit, and a co-author of the report, added: "Although it might sound absurd(荒谬的), it's possible that the same sunshine which may increase our risk of skin cancer may also have a healthy effect on the g eneral ageing process."Vitamin D made by the action of sunlight on the skin accounts for 90 per cent of the body's supply, but lower levels can also be obtained(获得) through food such as fish, eggs and breakfast cereals(谷物).Other studies have suggested the vitamin plays a key role in protecting against cancer and heart disease.32. 2019-2020学年上海市徐汇中学高三英语月考试卷及参考答案第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项AAlex Palmer says he'll never forget his 13th birthday, not because of a gift or a party, but fire. “It made me realize how valuable life is,” said Alex, a seventh grader atMonroeDemonstrationSchoolinTulsa,Oklahoma. On April 18, Alex and many other kids from his school were riding home on a school bus when they suddenly saw smoke coming from the bus’ engine. “It was jaw-dropping,” he told reporters.By the time Alex and some other kids made it out the bus’ back door, the bus was already on fire. And some of their schoolmates were still inside. So he and some of the other older kids took action.“One little kid was slowing everyone down with his big backpack, ” eighth grader Destiny Fain said, “so I got it off and threw it to the side and helped to make sure all the little kids weren’t fighting or pushing. ”As that was going on, sixth grader Marketez Doyle-Smith reportedly helped another classmate who had trouble in breathing because of the smoke. “We saw our friend lying on the ground,” he said, “so we took our shirts off and waved them to get him some air to breathe.”Marketez also reportedly stopped a younger kid trying to get back on the bus to search for something he’d left behind. “We're all a family,” he told reporters. “So I went back to help the little kid.”Finally everyone made it off safely, thanks to Alex, Destiny, Marketez and several other kids. By later that day, they were already being called heroes. “I really don’t see it as being a hero,” Alex said, according to The World. “I see it as the right thing to do—helping others before you help yourself.”1. The study was a project of researchers in theUnited Statesthat was ongoing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2,300 men and women to identify 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults scores, from 0 to as high as 12, based on how many smells they identified correctly.During the years of follow-up investigation, over 1,200 of the subjects died. When the study was launched, none of the adults were weak. They could walk a little under half a kilometer, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted that those with a weak nose were 30 percent more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.Honglei Chen, a doctor withMichiganStateUniversityinEast Lansing,Michigan, was the lead writer of a report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good-to-excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign for worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing disorders. The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning for poor health in older age that goesbeyond dementia or other neurodegenerative(神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of a weakening of the mind or body.4. What do you know about the study mentioned?A. The study involved researchers from the world.B. All the participants were of different ages.C. The study began to be performed about 13 years ago.D. 2 ,300 men and women were young and healthy.5. What was the situation like at the beginning of the study?A. More than 1,200 of the participants passed away.B. Many of the subjects were found with health problems.C. All the subjects were independent of others when walking.D. One third of the participants had a poor smell sense.6. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?A. People with a poor sense of smell have heart disease.B. You should be careful with your health if you smell poorly.C. People with a poor sense of smell won't suffer from cancer.D. Most of the elder people may have the dementia disease.7. Which is the best title for the passage?A. Strong Sense of Smell May Be Linked to Longer LifeB. Old People Tend to Have a Poor Sense of SmellC. A Number of Factors Result in Longer LifeD. Being Ill Means Losing the Sense of SmellCA team of researchersfrom theUniversityofColorado Boulderhave created a revolutionary type of robotic muscles. They are strong and flexible at the same time, can feel the movements they perform and, whenever they suffer damage, they can self-heal. However, what is best about them is probably the fact that they are extremely cheap to manufacture. The robotic muscles have been called actuators, and have drawn inspiration from real-life muscles. By creating robots equipped with this kind of actuators, researchers would allowthem to perform movements just like human muscles. To make the robotic muscles work, they filled some flexible material with electrodes(电极)and with liquid and oil. Then, they applied some electricity, and the liquid and oil started moving around the electrodes and powered them. This way, the robotic muscles started contracting and relaxing just like real muscles, but a lot quicker.Researchers also took inspiration from the variety of human muscles, and created more types of actuators, each of them performing a different movement. They called these robotic muscles HASEL ( Hydraulically-Amplified Self-healing Electrostatic). However, they are superior to biological muscles as they are stronger, faster, and more flexible.Even the researchers were amazed they could develop such technology. Eric Acome, the author of one of the studies, explained what is unique about the robotic muscles.“The ability to create electrically powered soft actuators that lift a gallon of water at several times per secondis something we haven't seen before.”These muscles are special because they are also self-healing. This property is given by the liquid placed inside of them, which also gives them a lot more advantages than those mechanisms (机械)using solids. In the end, the material which keeps the liquid, the oil and the electrodes is extremely cheap. But if you take the time to actually examine your anger instead of just “feeling” angry, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself. Knowing why you feel so angry can provide you with some surprising answers. These answers can enable you to suddenly grow spiritually and mentally.I can give you a personal example. I went to a meeting once and I was verbally attacked over an application I supported at my workplace. Various people went on and on about how terrible this system was and that it never worked. That didn’t bother me that much. I was used to that but one of the comments that was said was, “Your job is pointless.” This really upset meand at the time, I was ly furious(发怒地) with that comment.I was so angry and upset that they would treat me that way. Once I took the time to think about what was really making me so mad. I learned a lot. I realized that the comment was more truethan I wanted to admit. In the big scheme of things, my job was pointless. It wasn’t what I really wanted to be doing with my life and this was what frustrated me the most. Here I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn’t even really want to do. I was using it as a crutch(拐杖) because I didn’t have the confidence in myself to take the scary road towards what I really wanted to do. As soon as I realized that, a lot of my anger just melted away. I also realized that Ineeded to start focusing on what I really wanted to do.I now consider this incident as a great gift It got me back on track to moving in the direction I wanted to go with my life. I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken the time to figure out why I was really so angry.12. What made the author angry at the meeting?A. The system of the company was terrible.B. Someone said his job is insignificant.C. The policy of the company didn’t work.D. The application he supported was of no effect.13. What brought down the anger of the author?A. The apology someone made at the meeting.B. The crutch he used to take the scary road.C. His awareness of the fact that the comment was true.D. The courage he had to overcome the challenges.14. Why did the author consider the incident as a gift?A. It brought him back on track to the goal.B. It helped him get promoted to a higher position.C. It helped him change his character since then.D. It provided him with confidence in his career.15. What can be the best title of the passage?A. How to Cope with Verbal Attack in a CompanyB. Avoid Being Pointless at WorkC. “Those who labor in the earth,” he once wrote, “are the chosen people of God,” and he never lost faith in the farmers of the nation. A widely Read LeaderBBanks view online banking as a powerful “value-added” tool to attract and keep new customers while helping to eliminate costly paper handing or teller(出纳员)interaction in an increasingly competitive banking environment.Today, most large national banks, many local banks and credit unions offer some form ofonline banking, variously known as PC banking, home banking, electronic banking or Internet banking. Online banks are sometimes referred to as “brick-to-click” banks, both to tell them from “brick-to-mortar” banks that haven’t yet offered online banking, as well as from “virtual” banks that have no physical branches or tellers whatsoever. The challenge for the banking industry has been to design this new service channel in such a way that its customers will readily learn to use and trust it.
