复习讲义9:B5U3 Extended reading背诵速记版Acupuncture(针刺疗法): magic needles(针)One of the most famous Chinese medical treatments is the art of "magic needles", or Chinese acupuncture. It was developed long ago, perhaps as early as 2000 BCE. There is evidence(证据;证明)that acupuncture dates back to (追溯到)the Stone Age, when stone tools called bian were used to press areas of the body.As acupuncture developed, the simple bian stones were replaced by stone needles. Eventually, metal needles began to appear and took the place of stone needles. These solid(实心的)needles are made of different metals, such as gold and silver. Some acupuncturists today still use gold and silver needles, but the majority have now switched(转变;转换)to stainless(adj. In addition to the changes in material, the shapes of the needles have also changed over time.Originally, there were nine different kinds of needles, with variations(变化)in shape. Nowadays, the fine sharp needles that measure usually between 15 and 75 millimetres(n.毫米)in length are still used, while most of the others have been replaced by more complex(复杂的)medical instruments. So what happens during a visit to the acupuncture clinic(私人诊所)? First, the acupuncturist(针灸学家)examines(检查)the patient, looking at the patient's skin and tongue(舌头), listening to the sound of his or her voice and breathing, and smelling his or her breath. Then the acupuncturist(针灸学家)asks some questions about the patient's condition and feels his or he pulse(脉搏).This is a particularly important step according to the energy theory behind acupuncture. The acupuncturist can check the pulse(脉搏)in three positions on each wrist(手腕,腕关节),and every one of them is connected with a major body organ(器官). By checking all the positions, the acupuncturist can find out which energy channel does not have enough energy.According to the results of the check-up, the acupuncturist(针灸学家)then selects certain points on the body called acupuncture points. Needles(针)are pushed into the skin at these points so that a health problem can be treated. Up to now, more than 360 acupuncture points have been identified, each linked (独立主格)to a different part of the body. Sometimes the needles are pushed into points near the body part affected by a disease, and sometimes into points that are not so close to it.Over the years, acupuncture has been used to treat a wide variety of health problems, including severe(adj. 严重的) pains, blood pressure issues(血压问题),stomach discomfort(胃不舒服), sports injuries(受伤)and weightproblems. And it has been used to treat more than just physical problems-acupuncturists(针灸学家)have discovered that the treatment helps with mental problems like depression(抑郁)and anxiety(焦虑)too. Acupuncture has also been applied to treat people who abuse(滥用,辱骂)alcohol(酒精),tobacco(烟草)or drugs(毒品,毒药).How(如何)acupuncture actually works(奏效)is not clearly understood. For example, there are different theories trying to explain how it eases pain, but no agreement has been reached. One theory explaining this phenomenon(现象)suggests(表明)that acupuncture blocks pain signals from reaching the brain(阻止疼痛信号到达大脑). Another theory relates acupuncture to the production of a substance(物质,要点)in the body which can reduce pain.Despite the uncertainty(不确定性)about its medical basis, acupuncture has become a popular form of treatment. As a unique contribution of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture spread to many other Asian countries, such as Japan, as early as the 6th century. It was introduced to the West around the 16th century. In 2010, acupuncture was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Today, acupuncture(针灸)is recognized as a symbol(象征)of traditional Chinese culture and has come into widespread(广泛的)use around the world. The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture as a good treatment for over 100 medical problems. While doubts about its safety have gradually disappeared, interest continues to grow.

Find the reasons why people are for or against human cloning in the article and letters and write them in the table below2. Do you think it would be easy for the cloned baby to accept his/ her social identity as a ‘cloned’ human being?3. What would the person that had the original cell feel about the cloned baby?4. Think about the relationship between the title of the unit Science versus nature and cloning technology.Step7 HomeworkThink about the difficult scientific terms underlined before up on the text learning

The future is our gene(基因)Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you all for coming to this lecture. Over the course of my career, I have seen many wonderful scientific(adj. 科学的) developments, but none are as game-changing(彻底改变事态的)as genome(基因组)editing. I am full of excitement about the possibilities _that/which_this scientific advance can bring and I hope to share my excitement with you today. As many of you may already know, genes play a critical(关键的) role in shaping (塑造)our lives. Everything from the colour of our eyes to our talent for maths depends on genes. The complete set of genes inside a cell(细胞)or a living being(生物,存在,身心)is called a genome(基因组).Our own personal genome(基因组)carries all the information needed to make us grow and develop. It also contains information that helps determine our lifespan(寿命,有效期)and affects(v.影响)our chances of contracting(感染;与... Some people, for example, carry a gene(基因)that makes them more likely to catch a certain virus(n.病毒)or develop a particular form of cancer(癌症).Geneticists(基因学家)have been trying to identify(确认)which(哪一个)genes relate(联系)to which diseases, as they believe genome(基因组)editing is an effective means(方法,方式)of disease treatment and prevention (预防). It allows geneticists(基因学家)to make changes to the genome (基因组)by correcting, adding, deleting(删去)or replacing specific parts of the genetic material. In the near future, geneticists hope to apply(应用)this technology to treat a wide range of health problems.Soon we may be able to use such treatments to restore(v.恢复)a blind person's vision(视线)or give someone who was born deaf(聋的)an excellent sense of hearing. Ultimately (最终地,根本上地),this new technology might even make it possible to prevent diseases from ever developing by correcting abnormal(反常的,畸形的)genes early on. Genome editing(基因组编辑), serving as(当作)a new weapon(武器)in the fight against diseases, will lead to a fundamental(adj.十分重大的,基本上的)change in our approach to health care.As the technology continues to develop at a fast pace(n.节奏,步速),however, questions arise(v. 产生)about how to use it appropriately(正确地). Should (万一)we restrict(v.限制)our use of this technology to the treatment andprevention of diseases? Should we prohibit(禁止)geneticists(基因学家)from using it to enhance healthy bodies? One day soon we will be able to use genome editing(基因组编辑)to increase the human resistance(n.抵抗力)to colds and flus(流感), to make people taller, to help their muscles develop faster, to sharpen all of their senses or to make them more intelligent. We will also be able to select specific characteristics(n.特征;特点)for children before they are born, creating what some have called “designer babies".However,is this a good thing? What consequences(结果)might it have? Philosophers(哲学家),geneticists(基因学家)and government officials(政府官员)have all started to wrestle(vt.奋力斗争;努力对付)with such moral issues(道德问题). We have to figure out how to keep the technology from running wild. This means putting appropriate controls in place(准备就绪)to make sure that genome editing will work to our advantage.Without them, genome editing could be as dangerous as a car out of control. There is still much to be explored and debated(辩论)on the subject(主题)of genome editing(基因编辑). Despite(=in spite of尽管)the public argument over this technology, its possibilities have been creating much excitement throughout the entire medical community and beyond. Without doubt(毫无疑问),genome editing is one of the greatest inventions in the history of science.Thank you for listening.B1:1.Without doubt, the discovery is an important finding(调查发现) in the field of genetics.2.This could significantly enhance people’s chances of living to a ripe(成熟的)old age(高龄).。

Unit 3 Science and nature
板块:Reading
Thoughts on the design:
Teaching aims:
After learning The perfect copy, students will be able to:
e some useful phrases to state their “for and against” opinions on an atmosphere.
2.write a persuasive article using supporting details.
3.do conversion between book knowledge and their own knowledge.
4.persuade using their voices.
5.concern more about the relationship between science and nature.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 lead in (PPT 4-5)
1.Start the lesson by a brief review of what students have talked about cloning.
2.Present the learning objective of this period, which is to get more knowledge about cloning,
and grasp effective ways to express positive and negative opinions.
3.Prediction based on the title. What attitude does the author hold towards cloning, positive or
negative or neutral?
[Explanation]
Step 2 First reading (PPT 6-14)
1.Activity 1: Divide the whole class into 6 groups and set them off to dealing with separate
paragraphs. Require them to make each paragraph into a short drama, a monologue or a small press conference dependently. Allow them five to six minutes to do speed reading and preparations. Requirements: They need to get the main idea of each paragraph across to their peers with very short performance and they need to pay attention to some details.
2.Before students’ performance, hand out question sheets to be completed so that students can
better understand what is being performed and they can be more focused.
3.Check the answers. If there’s any information missing, they can do a second reading. [Explanation]
Step 3 Second reading (PPT 15-19)
1.Ask students to read the passage on P42 again and it they find any sentence difficult to
understand, they can ask.
2.What’s the author’s attitude? (neutral) What phrases can be used to state both positive and
negative attitudes towards an item? ( On the one hand; on the other hand; and state different facts))
3.If you want to state “for”or “against”only, how or what can you write to make your
arguments more persuasive? Free discussion.
4.Ask students to read the two letters on P43 and ask students to do a brief summary.
(Use “if” to state the possible consequences it can bring about, facts, quotes, etc.)
5.Activity 2: Who’s got the most persuasive voice?
Situation: I’m blind. I can’t read. How can I be persuaded?
Just pretend they are in a debate. Ask students (divided into two groups) to practice reading the two letters using persuasive voices. This skill is a must for debaters and will be useful when they do debates in Project.
[Explanation]
Step 4 Summary (PPT20)
1. Skills to make your writing persuasive.
2. Whether the copy is perfect or not, it’s already happening. What matters most? It is how we take advantage of science instead of preventing science going forward.
[Explanation]
