Hevelia airstrip, 40 miles away, would, if upgraded and expanded, be an attractive alternative for fully 20 percent of the passengers using Greentown airport. Nevertheless, experts reject the claim that turning Hevelia into a full-service airport would end the chronic delays at Greentown.Which of the following, if true, most helps to justify experts' position?A Turning Hevelia into a full-service airport would require not only substantial construction at the airport itself, but also the construction of new access highways.B A second largely undeveloped airstrip close to Greentown airport would be a more attractive alternative than Hevelia for many passengers who now use Greentown.C Hevelia airstrip lies in a relatively undeveloped area but would, if it became a full-service airport, be a magnet for commercial and residential development.D If an airplane has to wait to land, the extra jet fuel required adds significantly to the airline's costs.E Several airlines use Greentown as a regional hub, so that most flights landing at Greentown have many passengers who then take different flights to reach their final destinations.正确答案:E题目翻译:G机场需要减少10%的客流才能避免目前的拥挤。

The breakage frequencies in the extinct species were strikingly higher thanthose in the present-day species. In considering possible explanations for this finding, the researchers dismissed demographic biasbecause older individuals were not overrepresented in the fossil samples. They rejectedpreservational bias because a total absence of breakage in two extinct species demonstrated thatthe fractures were not the result of abrasion within the pits. They ruled out local bias becausebreakage data obtained from other Pleistocene sites were similar to the La Brea data. Theexplanation they consider most plausible is behavioral differences between extinct and present-daycarnivores-in particular, more contact between the teeth of predators and the bones of prey due tomore thorough consumption of carcasses by the extinct species. Such thorough carcassconsumption implies to the researchers either that prey availability was low, at least seasonally, orthat there was intense competition over kills and a high rate of carcass theft due to relatively highpredator densities.1.The primary purpose of the passage is to______A.present several explanations for a well-known factB.suggest alternative method of resolving a debateC.argue in favor of a controversial theoryD.question the methodology used in a studyE.discuss the implications of a research finding正确答案:E解析:This question asks you to identify the primary purpose of the passage. Choice E is the best answer. The first paragraph of the passage mentions evidence discovered at the Rancho La Brea tar pits and suggests that his evidence provides information about predator-prey dynamics in the late Pleistocene era. After dismissing possible alternative explanations, the second paragraph describes what is considered to be the most likely explanation for the findings. Choice A is incorrect because the passage discusses several explanations for the findings but only in order to eliminate them as rivals of the explanation that credits behavioral difference. In addition, there is no indication of how well known the evidence regarding tooth fractures is. Choice B is incorrect because no alternative methods for resolving a debate are mentioned. Choice C is incorrect because there is no suggestion in the passage that the preferred explanation for the tooth factures is controversial. Choice D is incorrect: there is nothing in the passage to suggest that the evidence discussed in the passage or the。

Gmat考试逻辑试题90题(10)72. A gas tax of one cent per gallon would raise one billion dollars per year at current consumption rates. Since a tax of fifty cents per gallon would therefore raise fifty billion dollars per year, it seems a perfect way to deal with the federal budget deficit. This tax would have the additional advantage that the resulting drop in the demand for gasoline would be ecologically sound and would keep our county from being too dependent on foreign oil producers.Which one of the following most clearly identifies an error in the author's reasoning?(A) The author cites irrelevant data.(B) The author relies on incorrect current consumption figures.(C) The author makes incompatible assumptions.(D) The author mistakes an effect for a cause.(E) The author appeals to conscience rather than reason.73. There is no reason why the work of scientists has to be officially confirmed before being published. There is asystem in place for the confirmation or disconfirmation of scientific findings, namely, the replication of results by other scientists. Poor scientific work on the part of any one scientists, which can include anything from careless reporting practices to fraud, is not harmful. It will be exposed and rendered harmless when other scientists conduct experiments and obtain disconfirmatory results.Which one of the following, if true, would weaken the argument?(A) Scientific experiments can go unchallenged for many years before they are replicated.(B) Most scientists work in universities, where their work is submitted to peer review before publication.(C) Most scientists are under pressure to make their work accessible to the scrutiny of replication.(D) In scientific experiments, careless reporting is more common than fraud.(E) Most scientists work as part of a team rather than alone.74. Governments have only one response to public criticism of socially necessary services: regulation of the activity of providing those services. But governments inevitably makethe activity more expensive by regulating it, and that is particularly troublesome in these times of strained financial resources. However, since public criticism of childcare services has undermined all confidence in such services, and since such services are socially necessary, the government is certain to respond.Which one of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?(A) The quality of child-care will improve.(B) The cost of providing child-care services will increase.(C) The government will use funding to foster advances in child-care.(D) If public criticism of policy is strongly voiced, the government is certain to respond.(E) If child-care services are not regulated, the cost of providing childcare will not increase.75. Advertisers are often criticized for their unscrupulous manipulation of people's tastes and wants. There is evidence, however, that some advertisers are motivated by moral as well as financial considerations. A particular publication decided to change its image from being a familynewspaper to concentrating one sex and violence, thus appealing to a different readership. Some advertisers withdrew their advertisements from the publication, and this must have been because they morally disapproved of publishing salacious material.Which one of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument?(A) The advertisers switched their advertisements to other family newspapers.(B) Some advertisers switched from family newspapers to advertise in the changed publication.(C) The advertisers expected their product sales to increase if they stayed with the changed publication, but to decrease if they withdrew.(D) People who generally read family newspapers are not likely to buy newspapers that concentrate on sex and violence.(E) It was expected that the changed publication would appeal principally to those in a different income group.76. Learning how to build a nest plays an important part in the breeding success of birds. For example, Dr. Snow has recorded the success of a number of blackbirds in severalsuccessive years. He finds that birds nesting for the first time are less successful in breeding than are older birds, and also less successful than they themselves are a year later. This cannot be a mere matter of size and strength, since blackbirds, like the great majority of birds, are fully grown when they leave the nest. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that they benefit by their nesting experience.Which one of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument?(A) Blackbirds build better nests than other birds.(B) The capacity of blackbirds to lay viable eggs increase with each successive trial during the first few years of reproduction.(C) The breeding success of birds nesting for the second time is greater than that of birds nesting for the first time.(D) Smaller and weaker blackbirds breed just as successfully as bigger and stronger blackbirds.(E) Up to 25 percent of all birds are killed by predators before they start to nest.77. How do the airlines expect to prevent commercial plane crashes? Studies have shown that pilot error contributesto two-thirds of all such crashes. To address this problem, the airline have upgraded their training programs by increasing the hours of classroom instruction and emphasizing communication skills in the cockpit. But it is unrealistic to expect such measures to compensate for pilots' lack of actual flying time. Therefore, the airlines should rethink their training approach to reducing commercial crashes.Which one of the following is an assumption upon which the argument depends?(A) Training programs can eliminate pilot errors.(B) Commercial pilot routinely undergo additional training throughout their careers.(C) The number of airline crashes will decrease if pilot training programs focus on increasing actual flying time.(D) Lack of actual flying time is an important contributor to pilot error in commercial plane crashes.(E) Communication skills are not important to pilot training programs.Questions 78-79Despite improvements in treatment for asthma, the death rate from this disease has doubled during the past decade from its previous rate. Two possible explanations forthis increase have been offered. First, the recording of deaths due to asthma has become more widespread and accurate in the past decade than it had been previously. Second, there has been an increase in urban pollution. However, since the rate of deaths due to asthma has increased dramatically even in cities with long-standing, comprehensive medical records and with little or no urban pollution, one must instead conclude that the cause of increased deaths is the use of bronchial inhalers by asthma sufferers to relieve their symptoms.78. Each of the following, if true, provides support to the argument EXCEPT:(A) Urban populations have doubled in the past decade.(B) Records of asthma deaths are as accurate for the past twenty years as for the past ten years.(C) Evidence suggests that inhalers make the lungs more sensitive to irritation by airborne pollen.(D) By temporarily relieving the symptoms of asthma, inhalers encourage sufferers to avoid more beneficial measures.(E) Ten years ago bronchial inhalers were not available as an asthma treatment.79. Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?(A) Urban pollution has not doubled in the past decade.(B) Doctors and patients generally ignore the role of allergies in asthma.(C) Bronchial inhalers are unsafe, even when used according to the recommended instructions.(D) The use of bronchial inhalers aggravates other diseases that frequently occur among asthma sufferers and that often lead to fatal outcomes even when the asthma itself does not.(E) Increased urban pollution, improved recording of asthma deaths, and the used of asthma deaths, and the use of bronchial inhalers are the only possible explanations of the increased death rate due to asthma.【。

Passage 1 Virtually everything astronomers known about objects outside the solar system is based on the detection of photons-quanta of electromagnetic radiation. Yet there is another form of radiation that permeates the universe: (5) neutrinos. With (as its name implies) no electric charge, and negligible mass, the neutrino interacts with other particles so rarely that a neutrino can cross the entire universe, even traversing substantial aggregations of matter, without being absorbed or even deflected. Neu- (10) trinos can thus escape from regions of space where light and other kinds of electromagnetic radiation are blocked by matter. Furthermore, neutrinos carry with them information about the site and circumstances of their production: therefore, the detection of cosmic neutrinos (15) could provide new information about a wide variety of cosmic phenomena and about the history of the uni- verse. But how can scientists detect a particle that interacts so infrequently with other matter? Twenty-five years (20) passed between Pauli's hypothesis that the neutrino existed and its actual detection: since then virtually all research with neutrinos has been with neutrinos created artificially in large particle accelerators and studied under neutrino microscopes. But a neutrino telescope, (25) capable of detecting cosmic neutrinos, is difficult to co- nstruct. No apparatus can detect neutrinos unless it is extremely massive, because great mass is synonymous with huge numbers of nucleons (neutrons and protons), and the more massive the detector, the greater the pro- (30) bability of one of its nucleon's reacting with a neutrino. In addition, the apparatus must be sufficiently shielded from the interfering effects of other particles. Fortunately, a group of astrophysicists has proposed a means of detecting cosmic neutrinos by harnessing the (35) mass of the ocean. Named DUMAND, for Deep Under- water Muon and Neutrino Detector, the project calls for placing an array of light sensors at a depth of five kilo- meters under the ocean surface. The detecting medium is the seawater itself: when a neutrino interacts with a (40) particle in an atom of seawater, the result is a cascade of electrically charged particles and a flash of light that can be detected by the sensors. The five kilometers of sea- water above the sensors will shield them from the interf- ering effects of other high-energy particles raining down (45) through the atmosphere. The strongest motivation for the DUMAND project is that it will exploit an important source of information about the universe. The extension of astronomy from visible light to radio waves to x-rays and gamma rays (50) never failed to lead to the discovery of unusual objects such as radio galaxies, quasars, and pulsars. Each of these discoveries came as a surprise. Neutrino astronomy will doubtless bring its own share of surprises. 1. Which of the following titles best summarizes the passage as a whole? (A) At the Threshold of Neutrino Astronomy (B) Neutrinos and the History of the Universe (C) The Creation and Study of Neutrinos (D) The DUMAND System and How It Works (E) The Properties of the Neutrino 2. With which of the following statements regarding neutrino astronomy would the author be most likely to agree? (A) Neutrino astronomy will supersede all present forms of astronomy. (B) Neutrino astronomy will be abandoned if the DUMAND project fails. (C) Neutrino astronomy can be expected to lead to major breakthroughs in astronomy. (D) Neutrino astronomy will disclose phenomena that will be more surprising than past discoveries. (E) Neutrino astronomy will always be characterized by a large time lag between hypothesis and experimental confirmation. 3. In the last paragraph, the author describes the development of astronomy in order to (A) suggest that the potential findings of neutrino astronomy can be seen as part of a series of astronomical successes (B) illustrate the role of surprise in scientific discovery (C) demonstrate the effectiveness of the DUMAND apparatus in detecting neutrinos (D) name some cosmic phenomena that neutrino astronomy will illuminate (E) contrast the motivation of earlier astronomers with that of the astrophysicists working on the DUMAND project 4. According to the passage, one advantage that neutrinos have for studies in astronomy is that they (A) have been detected for the last twenty-five years (B) possess a variable electric charge (C) are usually extremely massive (D) carry information about their history with them (E) are very similar to other electromagnetic particles 5. According to the passage, the primary use of the apparatus mentioned in lines 24-32 would be to (A) increase the mass of a neutrino (B) interpret the information neutrinos carry with them (C) study the internal structure of a neutrino (D) see neutrinos in distant regions of space (E) detect the presence of cosmic neutrinos 6. The passage states that interactions between neutrinos and other matter are (A) rare (B) artificial (C) undetectable (D) unpredictable (E) hazardous 7. The passage mentions which of the following as a reason that neutrinos are hard to detect? (A) Their pervasiveness in the universe (B) Their ability to escape from different regions of space (C) Their inability to penetrate dense matter (D) The similarity of their structure to that of nucleons (E) The infrequency of their interaction with other matter 8. According to the passage, the interaction of a neutrino with other matter can produce (A) particles that are neutral and massive (B) a form of radiation that permeates the universe (C) inaccurate information about the site and circumstances of the neutrino's production (D) charged particles and light (E) a situation in which light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation are blocked 9. According to the passage, one of the methods used to establish the properties of neutrinos was (A) detection of photons (B) observation of the interaction of neutrinos with gamma rays (C) observation of neutrinos that were artificially created (D) measurement of neutrinos that interacted with particles of seawater (E) experiments with electromagnetic radiation Passage 2 Since the late 1970's, in the face of a severe loss of market share in dozens of industries, manufacturers in the United States have been trying to improve produc- tivity-and therefore enhance their international (5) competitiveness-through cost-cutting programs. (Cost- cutting here is defined as raising labor output while holding the amount of labor constant.) However, from 1978 through 1982, productivity-the value of goods manufactured divided by the amount of labor input- (10) did not improve; and while the results were better in the business upturn of the three years following, they ran 25 percent lower than productivity improvements during earlier, post-1945 upturns. At the same time, it became clear that the harder manufacturers worked to imple- (15) ment cost-cutting, the more they lost their competitive edge. With this paradox in mind, I recently visited 25 companies; it became clear to me that the cost-cutting approach to increasing productivity is fundamentally (20) flawed. Manufacturing regularly observes a “40, 40, 20” rule. Roughly 40 percent of any manufacturing-based competitive advantage derives from long-term changes in manufacturing structure (decisions about the number, size, location, and capacity of facilities) and in approaches (25) to materials. Another 40 percent comes from major changes in equipment and process technology. The final 20 percent rests on implementing conventional cost- cutting. This rule does not imply that cost-cutting should not be tried. The well-known tools of this approach- (30) including simplifying jobs and retraining employees to work smarter, not harder-do produce results. But the tools quickly reach the limits of what they can contribute. Another problem is that the cost-cutting approach (35) hinders innovation and discourages creative people. As Abernathy's study of automobile manufacturers has shown, an industry can easily become prisoner of its own investments in cost-cutting techniques, reducing its ability to develop new products. And managers under (40) pressure to maximize cost-cutting will resist innovation because they know that more fundamental changes in processes or systems will wreak havoc with the results o n / p > p b d s f i d = " 2 1 7 " > 0 0 w h i c h t h e y a r e m e a s u r e d . Such newly thin persons will, therefore, ultimately regain weight until their body size again matches their metabolic rate. The conclusion of the argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?(A)Relatively few very overweight people who have dieted down to a new weight tend to continue to consume substantially fewer calories than do people whose normal weight is at that level.(B)The metabolisms of people who are usually not overweight are much more able to vary than the metabolisms of people who have been very overweight.(C)The amount of calories that a person usually burns in a day is determined more by the amount that is consumed that day than by the current weight of the individual.(D)Researchers have not yet determined whether the metabolic rates of formerly very overweight individuals can be accelerated by means of chemical agents.(E)Because of the constancy of their metabolic rates, people who are at their usual weight normally have as much difficulty gaining weight as they do losing it.7. “Fast cycle time” is a strategy of designing a manufacturing organization to eliminate bottlenecks and delays in production. Not only does it speed up production, but it also assures quality. The reason is that the bottlenecks and delays cannot be eliminated unless all work is done right the first time. The claim about quality made above rests on a questionable presupposition that(A)any flaw in work on a product would cause a bottleneck or delay and so would be prevented from occurring on a “fast cycle” production line(B)the strategy of “fast cycle time” would require fundamental rethinking of product design(C)the primary goal of the organization is to produce a product of unexcelled quality, rather than to generate profits for stockholders(D)“fast cycle time” could be achieved by shaving time off each of the component processes in production cycle(E)“fast cycle time” is a concept in business strategy that has not yet been put into practice in a factory8.Blood banks will shortly start to screen all donors for NANB hepatitis.Although the new screening tests are estimated to disqualify upto 5 percent of all prospective blood donors, they will still misstwo-thirds of donors carrying NANB hepatitis. Therefore, about 10 percent of actual donors will still supply NANB-contaminated blood. The argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?(A)Donors carrying NANB hepatitis do not,in a large percentage of cases, carry other infections for which reliable screening tests are routinely performed.(B)Donors carrying NANB hepatitis do not,in a large percentage of cases, develop the disease themselves at any point.(C)The estimate of the number of donors who would be disqualified by tests for NANB hepatitis is an underestimate.(D)The incidence of NANB hepatitis is lower among the potential blood donors than it is in the population at large.(E)The donors who will still supply NANB-contaminated bloodwill donate blood at the average frequency for all donors.文档内容到此结束,欢迎大家下载、修改、丰富并分享给更多有需要的人。

GMAT 模拟题Analytical WritingAnalysis of an Argument30minutesThe following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:“This past winter,200students from Waymarsh State College traveled tothe state capitol building to protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. The other12,000Waymarsh students evidently weren’t so concerned about their education:they either stayed on campus or left for winter break.Since the group who did not protest is far more numerous,it is more representative of the state’s college students than are the protesters. Therefore the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students.”Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what,if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.Integrated Reasoning30minutesQ uestion1-12A nswer KeyQuantitative human consumption.Krechalso contradicts Martin’s exclusion ofclimatic change as an explanation by(20)asserting that widespread climaticchange did indeed occur at the end ofthe Pleistocene.Still,Krech attributessecondary if not primary responsibilityfor the extinctions to the Paleoindians,(25)arguing that humans have producedlocal extinctions elsewhere. But,according to historian Richard White, even the attribution of secondaryresponsibility may not be supported(30)by the evidence.White observes thatMartin’s thesis depends on coincidingdates for the arrival of humans and thedecline of large animal species, andKrech, though aware that the dates(35)are controversial, does not challengethem;yet recent archaeologicaldiscoveries are providing evidencethat the date of human arrival wasmuch earlier than11,000years ago.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q5:Which of the following is true about Martin’s theory,as that theory is described in the passage?A.It assumes that the Paleoindians were primarily dependent on hunting for survival.B.It denies that the Pleistocene species extinctions were caused by climate change.C.It uses as evidence the fact that humans have produced local extinctions in othersituations.D.It attempts to address the controversy over the date of human arrival in North America.E.It admits the possibility that factors other than the arrival of humans played a role in thePleistocene extinctions.Answer:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q6:In the last sentence of the passage, the author refers to“recent archaeological discoveries”(lines 36-37)most probably in order toA.refute White’s suggestion that neither Maritn nor Krech adequately account forPaleoindians’contributions to the Pleistocene extinctionsB.cast doubt on the possibility that a more definitive theory regarding the causes of thePleistocene extinctions may be forthcomingC.suggest that Martin’s,Krech’s,and White’s theories regarding the Pleistocene extinctionsare all open to questionD.call attention to the most controversial aspect of all the current theories regarding thePleistocene extinctionsE.provide support for White’s questioning of both Martin’s and Krech’s positions regardingthe role of Paleoindians in the Pleistocene extinctionsAnswer:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q7:Which of the following,if true, would most weaken Krech’s objections to Martin’s theory?A.Further studies showing that the climatic change that occurred at the end of thePleistocene era was even more severe and widespread than was previously believedB.New discoveries indicating that Paleoindians made use of the small animals, plants, andinsects that became extinctC.Additional evidence indicating that widespread climatic change occurred not only at theend of the Pleistocene era but also in previous and subsequent erasD.Researchers’discoveries that many more species became extinct in North America at theend of the Pleistocene era than was previously believedE.New discoveries establishing that both the arrival of humans in North America and thewave of Pleistocene extinctions took place much earlier than11,000years agoAnswer:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q8:Community activist:If Morganville wants to keep its central shopping district healthy,it should prevent the opening of a huge SaveAll discount department store on the outskirts of Morganville. Records from other small towns show that whenever SaveAll has opened a store outside the central shopping district of a small town, within five years the town has experienced the bankruptcies of more than a quarter of the stores in the shopping district. The answer to which of the following would be most useful for evaluating the community activist’s reasoning?A.Have community activists in other towns successfully campaigned against the opening ofa SaveAll store on the outskirts of their towns?B.Do a large percentage of the residents of Morganville currently do almost all of theirshopping at stores in Morganville?。
