Promoting IBC Skills in Business Language Teaching Abstract:Learning a foreign language is important in intercultural business communication studies. But equally important is developing intercultural business communicative (IBC) competence,that is,the recognition of the cultural factors influencing behavior in business encounters around the globe (Beamer,1992; Bennett,1986; Varner,2001). Currently,courses in business language or intercultural communication often put non-Western students at a disadvantage. This paper provides some suggestions and aims to raise challenges for business language teachers in constructing learning environments that facilitate improving IBC skills among Chinese and other international business partners in their future business.Keywords:intercultural business communication (IBC); Chinese learners; international business teachingIn this paper,I’ll discuss the development of intercultural business communication teaching and the challenges we face in getting it right in the 21st century. In the past people establish business communication as a teaching area in the United States, and at present, it is a transitional period in which we are learning to communicate in a global and multidisciplinary environment, then in the future,it is the time for acquiring perfect intercultural business communication techniques and reacting to new challenges and opportunities. At present,we are going through a transition period in which we are adapting and learning how to communicate in this ever changing intercultural environment. Our challenge is to build on the fundamental principles and the foundation that were established in the past and develop new teaching methodologies,approaches,and techniques that will allow us to communicate more effectively and efficiently in the present and increasingly so in the future.A new western colonialism in business often distorts the teaching of intercultural communication and places non-Western students at a disadvantage. Ethnic Chinese students are an increasingly significant presence in Western business programs,and thus it is important to understand how they make the transition from their first culture education to new constructs for learning,socializing,communicating,and being. Learning a foreign language is important in intercultural business communication (IBC) studies. But equally important is developing intercultural communicative competence,that is,the recognition of the cultural factors influencing behavior in business encounters aro und the globe (Beamer,1992; Bennett,1986; Varner,2001). This paper intends to show how Chinese students perceive and make sense of IBC styles in international business,and how they can improve their IBC skills in their future business.一、Intercultural LearningByram (1997) assumes there is a direct relationship between foreign language (FL) teaching and the development of intercultural communication competence. In his view,FL courses should not only teach students the language needed to communicate but also confront them with “the experience of otherness,” as the effectiveness of communication in the FL depends on their ability to understand how messages will be perceived in another cultural context,FL business courses also need to promote the development of this intercultural component,as it is likely that graduates will end up using the FL primarily with fellow nonnative speakers of different nationalities in their international business. Courses need to provide students with the opportunity to analyze materials and critical incidents involving business professionals with various backgrounds (native and nonnative,different nationalities) who use the FL as a shared code (Schnitzer,1995). By consistently exposing learners to the potential “otherness” of FL communication in a intercultural business context (involving different accents,pragmatic expectations,discourse patterns,and the like),FL courses for international business major have the potential task to make a considerable contribution to achieving an important goal of IBC programs: the development of intercultural communicative competence in the target group.Production tasks involve assignments in which students practice FL and business pragmatic ability by participating in business communication activities. These tasks involve student-centered interaction in which the participants take on professionally relevant speaker or addressee perspectives. The tasks incorporate various business genres within which students co-create different types of communicative action in the FL. For example,longer role-play simulations provide practice in a wide range of linguistic and business pragmatic abilities. In such situations,students may initially be confronted with experiences and contexts they may be unfamiliar with and will be required to use their existing knowledge and skills to carry out a particular task (chair a meeting or write a management summary,for example) only as best they can. As part of this “deep-end” approach,the teacher acts as a monitor and facilitator and provides the support the students need when they work through the task. Feedback,on the basis of a videotaped performance,for example,is tailored to the need revealed by the task and geared not just to creating FL awareness but also to evaluating the outcomes and processes of the task (for the group) within the project as a whole.In this increasingly globalized and multidisciplinary communication environment,business language communication teachers need to introduce new theory and build new teaching approaches into our pedagogy. At the same time,theyshould continue to stress the fundamentals of effective business communication. This means continually taking into account advances in communication technologies,even more complex knowledge in the professional genres. Our challenges to the future are to learn how to communicate in an information-overloaded environment,how to encode and decode messages within different cultures at varying competency levels,and how to use and choose among communication media and technologies. The framework of business communication that has been developed in the past and present periods should now be used as the platform from which to extend and enrich our discipline and our teaching.A key factor is the advancements made in technology. Current technologies are influencing not only the way businesses communicate globally but also the way in which teaching,learning,and research can be done collaboratively. For example,advancements in technology (e.g. the Internet,videoconferencing) have allowed teachers to provide students with global visions and involve them in collaborative joint research projects. The next challenge we all face is how to incorporate new technologies into the way we deliver courses to a mass audience in ways that will enhance teaching and learning efficacy as well as providing instantaneous feedback to students.Irrespective of the role technology has play,we believe that there are two interrelated considerations we must take into account as we move into the future.Research InputThe knowledge and theory base that we will have to teach will continually expand as business communication researchers discover how to better communicate in specific situations and how to accomplish specific tasks,with interlocutors at varying competency levels. With continuous research input,we will be able to keep business communication teaching relevant and related to the ever changing and evolving global environment. Frameworks and models are needed to organize this knowledge so that we will be able to generalize the research findings into principles and guidelines that can guide communication practice. New research findings can be integrated into these frameworks and models so that,in the process,our knowledge and theory base can be continually updated,kept relevant,and made usable and operational. In sum,business communication research has to play an increasingly important role in the future and must become even more tightly integrated with teaching. Research results and new models can expand the subject areas of business communication and keep what we teach related to real-world communication.Skill BuildingDeveloping communication competencies will become an ever more central focus of our teaching responsibilities. We need to develop exercises,projects,andcases so that students can apply communication theory and use communication technology as they learn to communicate in the multidisciplinary global communication environment. Teaching new theories and models without the associated application materials will lead students to see the field of business communication as abstract and irrelevant,so it is vital that we develop the skill-building materials that go hand in hand with and illustrate theory.As teachers of business language communication,we should focus on developing and training our students to adapt and communicate effectively in current and future communication environments and develop their competencies to:1. interact in a multilingual and multicultural environment in which individuals possess various levels of language proficiency and use different professional genres,2. adjust to the varying linguistic and cultural competencies of their communication partners,and3. use communication technologies effectively to provide real-time information and message exchange with counterparts in remote locations and in virtual organizations.五、Conclusion:In sum,the major challenges we face as teachers of business language communication include first the need to integrate new knowledge and technology into our teaching while showing how this knowledge and use of technology is related to and is consistent with the fundamental principles and process of business communication. Second,we must focus on skill building so that our students can use their knowledge to guide them toward becoming more effective communicators. Third,we should become engaged as researchers,contributing to the knowledge and theory base of our business communication discipline (conducting both basic research and teaching related studies). Our goal should be to provide students with competencies,skills,and knowledge bases to communicate in an increasingly complex and diverse global communication environment,that is to say,the skill of intercultural business communication (IBC) is great needed.。
