This section totals 20 points, two points for each question.Passage OneThe impact of e-commerce is happening in phases. In its first phase (1994-1997), e-commerce was about presence: making sure that everybody had a web site, meeting the demand that every company, large or small, get out there and have at least something on the Internet. People weren't quite sure why they were doing it, but they knew that they had to have an online presence. The second phase (1997-2000) of e-commerce was about transactions buying and selling over digital media. The focus in this phase was on order flow and gross revenue. Some of that was the matching of buyers and sellers who never would have found each other in the past. Some of it was simply taking transactions that would have been done through paper purchase orders and saying that this business was done on the Internet, although the meaning of that change was quite insignificant. But in this phase, the announcements were all about order flow at any cost: why-sell-it-when-you-can-give-it-away business models. As a result, many of the first movers in this phase such as V alue America, are either gasping, have gasped their last breath, or are flailing about in a sea of red ink.Today, e-commerce is entering the third phase (2000-?), with a focus on how the Internet can impact profitability. And profitability is not about increasing gross revenues but rather increasing gross margins. We call this phase e-business, and it includes all the applications and processes enabling a company to service a business transaction. Thus, e-business is not just about e-commerce transactions or about buying and selling over the Web: it's the overall strategy of redefining old business models, with the aid of technology, to maximize customer value and profits. To paraphrase Business Week: “Forget B2B and B2C, E-business is about P2P-path to profitability."( ) 1.Between 1994 and 1997, companies built their web sites mainly because they .A. wanted to find more customersB. had no other things to doC. wanted to show their existence on InternetD. felt the Internet was quite interesting( ) 2.In the second phase of e-commerce, companies were satisfied that they . A.have built their own web sites on InternetB. have taken some transactions through InternetC. took transactions through paper purchase ordersD. take transactions through paper purchase orders( ) 3.What does “the first movers" (para. 2) most probably mean?A. The first motivations for the companies to take e-commerce.B. The earliest transformation of transactions from paper orders to e-commerce.C. The first companies that have failed in the field of e-commerce.D. The earliest companies that get involved in e-commerce.( ) 4.The earliest e-commerce began in the year of .A. 1994B. 1997C. 1999D. 2000( ) 5.What does the last sentence in the passage most probably mean?A. B2B and B2C are no longer suitable e-business models.B. The aim of taking e-business is to earn more profit.C. E-business is by no means a good way of getting profit.D. P2P is the most suitable e-business model.Passage TwoWalk into a street market anywhere from Manila to Manchester, and someone will be selling T-shirts branded with the distinctive CK logo of Calvin Klein, the New York fashion designer. If the price is very low, the T-shirts are probably fakes. Calvin Klein, like most other internationally-known fashion designers, has, for a long time, had problems with counterfeits selling poor quality merchandise bearing his brand name. Now he is doing something about it. “As the Calvin Klein brand has become well-known, we’ve seen a big increase in counterfeit activity,”says Gabriella Forte, chief executive of Calvin Klein, “the better-known the brand name, the more people want to rip it off.”In the past Calvin Klein took a relatively passive approach to the counterfeit problem. The company has now got tougher by establishing a network of employees and external specialists to uncover copyright abuse. The move began with a general change in corporate strategy whereby Calvin Klein has aggressively expanded its interests outside North America. Calvin Klein has been one of the leading fashion designers in the North America market since the mid-1970s. Now Calvin Klein isbuilding up its fashion business in other countries. It has increased its investment in advertising, and restructured its licensing arrangements by signing long-term deals with partners for entire regions such as Europe or Asia, rather than giving licensing rights to individual countries. But as sales and brand awareness have risen, Calvin Klein has become an increasingly popular target for Asian and European counterfeiters, alongside other luxury brands such as Gucci, Chanel and Ralph Lauren. The fake goods, mostly T-shirts, jeans and baseball caps, not only reduce the company’s own sales but damage its brand image by linking it to poor quality merchandise. “You’d be amazed at how many people pay $5 for a T-shirt without realizing it’s counterfeit,” said one executive. ( ) 6.Which of the following statements is the correct understanding of the word “logo”?A. a name, a term or a symbol which is used to differentiate a product fromcompetitors’ products.B. the ability of a brand to make money.C. the symbol of a company or other organization.D. agreements which allow a company to make and sell a registered brand locally. ( ) 7.According to the passage, why the problem of CK’S being counterfeiting is getting worse?A. The company changed its way of dealing with counterfeiters.B. The brand name has become well-known.C. The price of the fake goods is much lower than that of the original ones.D. The brand name is easy to remember.( ) 8.What was Calvin Klein’s attitude to counterfeiting at present?A. He adopts a constructive and active approach.B. He is pessimistic and discouraged.C. He thinks fighting back doesn’t pay.D. He asserts that the brand awareness has risen and counterfeiting will drop over time. ( ) 9.What has the company done to fight back counterfeiting?A. Establishing a network of employees to find out the counterfeiters.B. Inviting external specialists to uncover copyright abuse.C. Adopting a positive and more aggressive strategy.D. All of the above.( ) 10.How many fashion victims are mentioned in the passage?A. One, Gucci.B. Three, they are Gucci, Chanel and Ralph Lauren.C. One, Calvin Klein.D. About 40 per cent of the population’s food and a large proportion of the raw materials used by industry have to be imported. In 1980 exports of goods and services were equal to about 25 per cent of the Gross National Product. In the exports of manufactures, the UK, in recent years, has done less well than her major competitors. The UK’s share of the value of the main manufacturing countries’ exports fell from 16 percent in 1980 to about 9 per cent in 1999. This was due to the fact that the volume of UK exports increased at an annual average rate of 5 per cent, only about one-half the rate achieved by the main manufacturing countries as a whole and about one-third the rate for Japan.Changes in the commodity composition of exports have been very small in recent years. The share of manufactured goods has increased slightly while the share of basic materials has declined. There has been a steady decline in the share of textiles and an increase in the share of chemicals in total exports. Over the next decade the possibility of exporting North Sea Oil and the diminishing dependence on imported oil should have a beneficial effect on the UK’s visible trade balance. The most striking change in the geographical distribution of UK exports in recent years has been the swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growing dependence on the market in Western Europe. Exports to Western Europeaccounted for about5 / 1434 per cent of UK exports in 1989 but by 2000 this share had grown to nearly 60 per cent. This is much in line with developments in world trade as a whole, because trade between industrialized countries has been the fastest growing sector of world trade. The other important development is the growing importance of the markets in the oil-exporting countries.()1. The export of manufactures of U.K. during recent years .A. has risen.B. has done better than the major competitors.C. has fallenD. has done less well that developing countries.()2. The export of textiles .A. has declinedB. has declined sharplyC. has increased slightlyD. has increased sharply()3. The export of basic materials .A. has increasedB. has declinedC. has remained steadyD. has little changed()4. What is the most striking change in UK exports?A. The swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growingdependence on the market in Western Europe.B. Changes in the commodity composition of exports.C. The increase of the share of manufactured goods and the decline of the share ofbasic materials.D. the beneficial effect of the export of oil on the UK’s visible trade balance.()5. Which statement is not true?A. UK is exporting more to Western Europe.B. trade between UK and Western Europe has been the fastest growing sector of6 / 14world trade.C. UK will possibly import less oil over the next decade.D. UK is exporting more chemicals.Passage TwoIs a quiet revolution under way in the nation’s shopping habits? Are we gradually allowing an increasingly select number of large companies to take care of all our basic requirements? The supermarket chains certainly hope so. ‘Peop le don’t have the time to shop around any more. If they’re happy with the quality of a company’s service, then they’re likely to buy other product types from them as well,’ says Jim Austin, an industry analyst. With the major supermarket brands such as Tesco, J Sainsbury and Asda already offering financial services, credit cards, own-label clothing, mobile phones, and cut-price electrical goods including computers, Austin believes that the supermarkets’ diversification is set to continue.‘The UK retail food market is saturated, so their only real prospect of growth is either to enter foreign markets or diversify into new markets at home..’Tesco and J Sainsbury have done both. Having already bought foreign subsidiaries, both large supermarket chains have set up their own banks in order to offer customers financial services such as personal loans, mortgages and savings accounts.Together, the two new banks took over £2bn of customer deposits within the first year of trading. ‘They are winning business by using a lower cost base to offer their customers better interest rates on savings than traditional banks,’ says Austin. However, there are question marks over long-term profitability. The traditional providers say there is bound to come a point when the new banks will eventually want to widen margins and boost profits. ‘When they start to raise prices, they might create bad publicity, which could hurt their brand,’ says one observer. ‘How will a major supermarket react, for instance, when it is faced with having to repossess a regular shopper’s home?’Shoppers, however, do not share these fears. A recent survey of 1,000 people by brand consultants Cook & Pearson concludes that shoppers will continue to buy a wider range of goods and services from supermarkets. Many people said that they would be prepared to buy7 / 14a supermarket own-label car or even a house from a supermarket-branded estate agent. Interest was also shown in combining a food shopping trip with a visit to a supermarket dentist.Loyalty schemes are another incentive for customers. ‘Most supermarkets now offer bonus points with every purchase. These points add up to free air miles or cash discounts, so it really pays to stay loyal to the brand in all its diversified forms,’ says Austin.()6 Why are the large UK supermarket chains diversifying? _____________.A. Because the retail food market in the UK has been occupied by foreigncompanies.B. Because the retail food market in the UK is saturated.C. Because the retail food market in the UK is quite small.D. Because diversification into new markets can promote the growth of the retailfood market in the UK.()7 How are the supermarkets able to attract business in the banking sector?____________.A. Because they can offer more services.B. Because they can offer more varieties of commodities.C. Because they can offer better interest rates.D. Because they can offer free car parking for customers.()8 What are the risks involved with brandstretching?_________________.A. There may come a point when providers will want to raise prices.B. There may come a point when providers lose all their banking business.C. There may come a point when customers lose their confidence in the bankingsector.D. All the UK large supermarkets will have to close all their banking business. ()9 How do the large UK supermarket chains encourage brand loyalty? ___________.A. By offering free samples of commodities.B. By offering a wide range of goods and services.C. By offering convenient banking services.D. By offering loyalty schemes like bonus points.8 / 14()10 The headline “Banking on a brand” means ______________.A. selling a brandB. purchasing a brandC. relying on a brandD. stretching a brandIII.Business Translation: 20%(商务翻译,20分)Section ADirections: There are ten terms in this section. 2011年剑桥商务英语中级真题阅读精选及答案

2011年剑桥商务英语中级真题阅读精选〔1〕Questions 1-7Look at the statements below and the article about the development of future business leaders on the opposite page. Which section of the article (A, B, C or D) does each statement (1-7) refer to?For each statement (1-7), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once.1 Managers need to take action to convince high-flyers of their value to the firm.2 Organisations need to look beyond the high-flyers they are currently developing.3 There is a concern that firms investing in training for high-flyers may not gain the benefits themselves.4 Managers need expert assistance from within their own firms in developing high-flyers.5 Firms currently identify high-flyers without the support of a guidance strategy.6 Managers are frequently too busy to deal with the development of high-flyers.7 Firms who work hard on their reputation as an employer will interest high-flyers.The Stars of the FutureA Existing management research does not tell us much about how to find and develop high-flyers, those people who have the potential to reach the top of an organisation. As a result, organisations are left to formulate their own systems. A more effective overall policy for developing future leaders is needed, which is why the London Business School has launched the Tomorrow's Leaders Research Group (TLRG). The group contains representatives from 20 firms, and meets regularly to discuss the leadership development of the organisations' high-flyers.B TLRG recognises just how significant line managers are in the process of leadership development. Unfortunately, with today's flat organisations, where managers have functional as well as managerial responsibilities, people development all too often falls victim to heavy workloads. One manager in the research group was unconvinced by the logic of sending his best people away on development courses, 'only to see them poached by another department or, worse still, another firm'. This fear of losing high-flyers runs deep in the organisations that make up the research group.C TLRG argues that the task of management is not necessarily about employee retention, but about creating 'attraction centres'. 'We must help line managers to realise that if their companies are known as ones that develop their people, they will have a greater appeal to high-flyers,' said one advisor. Furthermore, selecting people for, say, a leadership development programme is a sign of commitment from management to an individual. Loyalty can then be more easily demanded in return.D TLRG has concluded that a company's HR specialists need to take action and engage with line managers individually about their role in the development of high-flyers. Indeed, in order to benefit fully from training high-flyers as the senior managers of the future, firms must actually address the development of all managers who will be supporting thehigh-flyers. Without this, managers will not be in a position to give appropriate advice. And when eventually thehigh-flyers do move on, new ones will be needed to replace them. The next challenge will be to find a new generation of high-flyers.首先得搞明白的是这篇文章到底讲的什么。

This section totals 20 points, two points for each question.Passage OneIn international commerce, payment for goods and services usually involves the currencies of more than one country, and the problem of which currency to use can become a serious barrier to completing a deal. There would be no problem if the currency of a seller’s country could always be bought and sold at a fixed and invariable price compared to the money of a buyer’s country. However, in most cases, the relative value of currencies is constantly changing, and some are quite volatile. If the value of a currency changes between the time a deal is made and the time payment is made it could have serious impact on the profitability of a transaction. For example, if a trader has made a deal to be paid in a foreign currency and that currency devalues before payment is made, the trader will receive less value for the goods than originally anticipated. Of course it is also true that extra profits could be made if the foreign currency increases in value. In any event, this is a risk most traders would prefer to avoid. There are many ways of dealing with foreign exchange risk and the simplest, if you are the seller, is insisting on payment in your own currency. This strategy lays the risk at the buyer’s door, but it may not always be a viable option, and traders may have to accept payment in foreign currency in order to make a sale. If full agreement cannot be reached, it may be6possible for both buyer and seller to share the risk by arranging for a portion of the payment to be made in one currency and the remainder in another. If it is absolutely necessary to take on the foreign exchange risk, traders can protect themselves in a number of ways. One way is to build the estimated cost of a currency fluctuation into the deal to guard against potential losses. However, as this is simply an estimate it will rarely fully protect the trader.()1. Which of the following is least likely to constitute a barrier to completing a deal?A. There are many currencies in the world.B. The seller and the buyer disagree on the use of a currency.C. The buying and selling prices of the currency of the seller’s country in terms ofthe currency of the buyer’s country are changing violently.D. The relative value of currencies is invariably fluctuating.()2. Which of the following statements is true?A. The profitability of a transaction will not be affected if the value of a currencyremains static.B. The trader will receive less value for the goods than originally anticipated if thevalue of the foreign currency for the contract is higher at the time of payment thanat the time of concluding the deal.C. The trader will receive more value for the goods than originally anticipated ifthe value of the foreign currency for the contract is higher at the time of paymentthan at the time of concluding the deal.D. Most traders seek to make profits by taking advantage of price fluctuations ofcurrencies.()3. There are many ways of dealing with foreign exchange risk, and the writer suggests _______ in the third paragraph.A. oneB. twoC. threeD. four()4. A viable option is an option that _______ .A. will enable the trader to develop its businessB. is likely to generate profits for the traderC. can work successfully国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第7页(共14页)D. makes the trader a stronger competitor()5. The last paragraph implies that the writer thinks _______ .A. it absolutely necessary that traders take on the foreign exchange riskB. that there are a number of ways by which traders can fully protect themselvesC. that to build the estimated cost of a currency fluctuation into the deal to guardagainst potential losses is a perfect way of protecting tradersD. that traders are unlikely to be fully protected although there are more than oneway available to themPassage TwoRunning a small business certainly is alluring, which is why so many people dream of it. Sad to say, though, of every ten small businesses formed, eight go out of business within the first ten years after they open their doors. The financial risks of running a small business are very high.Even if the business keeps going, the odds are not in the entrepreneur’s favor that he or she will have the next Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Company, New England’s leading premium ice-cream vendor. It is more likely that the business will produce a living for its owner, but not much more. And there are always worries about the new equipment, expanding inventory, rent increases, or competition. Ben & Jerry’s, for instance, found itself shut out of supermarkets as a result of competition from Haagen-Dazs, the original premium ice cream maker whose owners sold it to Pillsbury. It took a lawsuit to open the supermarket doors again. In addition to facing financial and psychological stresses, entrepreneurs tend to be victims of physical stress. The small businessperson often must be the owner, manager, sales force, shopping and receiving clerk, bookkeeper, and custodian. Sixteen-hour days quickly become standard, and vacations are rarely possible.A key element in the definition of an entrepreneur is that he or she takes risks. If the potential rewards – whether financial or psychological – were not enormous, no one would go into a small business. A million or so people each year balance the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship and decide to become entrepreneurs. Our society rewards innovation and8risk taking, if the entrepreneur can persist. Many creative persons succeed or fail not in their business concepts but rather in managing their businesses once they start.()6. Many people dream of running a small business because they think that _______.A. it is less riskyB. it is flexibleC. it is temptingD. it is profitable()7. When business continues to grow , the entrepreneur ________.A. is offered more opportunities to expandB. still has many worriesC. faces more competitionD. tends to get involved in lawsuits()8. It’s hard for small businesses to survive because entrepreneurs face all but_______.A. financial stressB. physical stressC. psychological stressD. public pressure()9. What is essential to an entrepreneur?A. Risk-taking spiritB. Ability to persistC. Good management skillD. Innovation()10. According to the writer , _______.A. many creative persons succeed in their businessB. there are also enormous potential rewards for people running small businessesC. entrepreneurs depend on financial incentives provided by the governmentD. people decide to become entrepreneurs because they like to take risksIII.Business Translation: 20%(商务翻译,20分)国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第9页(共14页)Section ADirections: There are ten terms in this section. This section totals 20 points, two points for each question.Passage OneAs a manager, I rely a lot on e-mail; especially with two telecommuters on my staff. After seeing how e-mails have come back to haunt so many executives in court, I'm wondering what should one avoid e-mailing?I just read about a big Hollywood star who decided that he was going to seeka divorce from his spouse of 22 years. He didn't sit down to talk to her about this. He didn't even give her a call. Nope, he e-mailed her about it.Unfortunately, he's not the only one who has broken his vows through e-mail. Many of us have e-mailed someone over something that was far too important, far too nuanced, far too personal to e-mail. Below is a list of times not to hit send. For more, check out The Boss's Survival Guide by Rosner, Halcrow and Levins (McGraw Hill, 2000).Don't e-mail big stuff. Don't e-mail an announcement about a merger, acquisition, reorganization or downsizing. If it's a big deal then you need to tell your people face-to-face. Reading a major announcement in an e-mail isn't as bad as reading it for the first time in the newspaper, but it's close.Don't e-mail policy changes that will generate questions. Changes in sick leave or vacation time policies or benefits coverage will generate questions. As a general rule, anything that hits someone's wallet should be explainedface-to-face.Stop e-mails that become a tennis match. We've all known e-mail debates that have volleyed back and forth more times than a tennis ball at Wimbledon. Ifan e-mail goes back and forth more than three times — and especially if thedistribution list gets bigger — that's a sure sign that the discussion is bigger thane-mail. Call a halt and bring people together to resolve the issue.Don't put anything confidential in e-mail. That includes: Salaries, comments about performance, etc.Don't put anything in e-mail that you don't want to see in the newspaper or hear in court. Now that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the WhiteHouse have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court, you know that even "private" e-mail is not really private. Nor can it be easilydeleted.Which leads to the big issue — are you hiding behind your e-mail? Some managers rely on e-mail in lieu of face-to-face conversation. It's especiallytempting when people are off-site; such as telecommuters, vendors, orindependent contractors. E-mail is more easily misinterpreted because it doesn'tallow for give-and-take discussion and people aren't guided by facial expressionsand vocal intonations. And the more dependent you are on e-mail, the moremysterious you become. Even the Wizard of Oz learned that being the manbehind the curtain only gets you so far. Go down the hall, hang out in thelunchroom, or pick up the phone at least some of the time.Follow these tips and what you are trying to say won't get divorced from the way that you say it.()1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true?A. Even "private" e-mail is not really private.B. E-mails are more easily misinterpreted.C. “Private” emails cannot be easily deleted.D. No “private” emails can be r eally deleted.()2. The fact that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the White House have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court indicatesthat .A. people should not use emails in their work.B. even "private" e-mail is not really private.C. emails have brought people too much trouble and inconvenience.D. emails will lead to a lot of law suits.()3. The expression “in lieu of” in the paragraph above the last means _____________.A. instead ofB. in line withC. in spite ofD. prior to()4. According to the passage, all the following should be explained face-to-face except _______________.A. anything that hits someone's walletB. Changes in the time of conferencesC. changes in sick leaveD. changes in holiday time policies()5. The best title for this passage would be_________________.A. The Importance of E-mail in BusinessB. The Popularity of E-mail in BusinessC. E-mail Always a Must in Business CommunicationD. E-mail Not Always the Best MessengerPassage TwoEconomic "globalization" is a historical process, the result of human innovation and technological progress. It refers to the increasing integration ofeconomies around the world, particularly through trade and financial flows. Theterm sometimes also refers to the movement of people (labor) and knowledge(technology) across international borders. There are also broader cultural, political and environmental dimensions of globalization that are not covered here.At its most basic, there is nothing mysterious about globalization. The term has come into common usage since the 1980s, reflecting technological advancesthat have made it easier and quicker to complete international transactions—both trade and financial flows. It refers to an extension beyond national borders of thesame market forces that have operated for centuries at all levels of humaneconomic activity—village markets, urban industries, or financial centers.Markets promote efficiency through competition and the division of labor—the specialization that allows people and economies to focus on what they do best.Global markets offer greater opportunity for people to tap into more and larger markets around the world. It means that they can have access to more capital flows, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. But markets do not necessarily ensure that the benefits of increased efficiency are shared by all.Countries must be prepared to embrace the policies needed, and in the case of the poorest countries may need the support of the international community as they do so.()6. Globalization is .A. a novelty in recent years.B. mysterious as it hasn’t been well known by the majority of people.C. not new to peopleD. a historical event.()7. Globalization refers toA. the increasing integration of economies around the worldB. the movement of people (labor) and knowledge (technology) across internationalbordersC. an extension beyond national borders of the market forcesD. What are the benefits of globalization?A. increased efficiency of the marketB. cheaper importsC. larger marketsD. all of the above()10. Which of the following is not true?A. Choosing the wrong candidate may leave an organisation paying for years to come.Few companies will have escaped all of the following failures: people who panic at the first sight of stress; those with long impressive qualifications who seem incapable of learning; hypochondriacs whose absentee record becomes astonishing; and the unstable person later discovered to be a thief or worse.Less dramatic, but just as much a problem, is the person who simply does not come up to expectations, who does not quite deliver; who never becomes a high-flier or even a steady performer; the employee with a fine future behind them. The first point to bear in mind at the recruitment stage is that people don’t change. Intelligence levels decline modestly, but change little over their working life. The same is true of abilities, such as learning languages and handling numbers. Most people like to think that personality can change, particularly the more negative features such as anxiety, low esteem, impulsiveness or a lack of emotional warmth. But data collected over 50 years gives a clear message: still stable after all these years. Extroverts become slightly less extroverted; the acutely shy appear a little less so, but the fundamentals remain much the same. Personal crises can affect the way we cope with things: we might take up or drop drink, drugs, religion or relaxation techniques, which can be have pretty dramatic effects. People can be groomed for a job. Just as politicians are carefully repackaged through dress, hairstyle and speech specialists, so people can be sent on training courses, diplomas or experimental weekends. But there is a cost to all this which may be more than the price of the course. Better to select for what you actually see rather than attempt to change it. ()1. Employers should select candidates for what they are rather than for their potential.C. Employers should select the newly graduated and send them on training courses, diplomasor experimental weekends.D. Massive infrastructure spending, the benefits of past investments and deregulation and growing regional trade will push along regional growth. The report tipped China’s gross domestic product to grow by 9.5 per cent in 1996 and 10.5 per cent in 1997, and Hong Kong’s to grow by 4.3 and 5.0 per cent. Singapore’s real GDP was forecast to grow by 7.6 and 7.4 per cent, Malaysia’s by 8.6 and 8.1 per cent, Thailand’s by 8.8 and 8.4 per cent, Indonesia’s by 7.3 and 7.1 per cent and Philippines’ by 5.6 and 5.8 per cent.“However, all is not rosy,” cautioned the report, which listed overheating as the region’s biggest challenge in the short term and skilled-labor shortages in the long run.It cited strains from rapid growth that had begun to stretch current account deficits and spur inflation in some regional economies, which could prevent their central banks from lowering interest rates.“This implies that economic vulnerability to unexpected shocks will remain high,” the report said, forecasting a further tightening of monetary policy in countries such as the Philippines and Malaysia, and no significant easing in Thailand, Indonesia and China.Crosby Securities also cited massive new investment programs generated by demands on infrastructure such as power, telecommunications and transport which had fuelled over-heating.It said Asia would also face a bigger challenge from newly deregulating economies in Eastern Europe which offered lower costs and better-educated workers to foreign investors.Asia’s main foreign investors should, however, continue to expand their presence in the region, the securities house said, noting new trends of intra-Asian investment.Singapore is shifting its lower value-added disc drive and electronics industry to Malaysia, which in turn is moving some of its garment-making and consumer electronics manufacturing to Indonesia and==============================专业收集精品文档=============================个人收集了温度哦精品文档供大家学习==============================专业收集精品文档======================================================================================================== ==========================================================================================专业收集精品文档=============================Thailand. xx年全国国际商务英语《BEC中级》考试题For each question 15 – 20 , mark one letter (A, B, C or D ) on your Answer Sheet for the answer you choose. The Negotiating Table:You can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by panies to negotiate on their behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game BECause, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a petitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he sueeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will remend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it isthe safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or suessful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more fortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may notlike you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to bee their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not sueed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they havebecause people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this bees too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More mon is a corporate culture clash between panies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be petitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy option。
