Read and follow all of Whelen’s written instructions when installing or using this device. Emergency vehicles are often operated under high speed stressful conditions which must be accounted for when installing all emergency warning devices. Controls should be placed within convenient reach of the operator so that they can operate the system without taking their eyes off the roadway. Emergency warning devices can require high electrical voltages and/or currents. Properly protect and use caution around live electrical connections.Grounding or shorting of electrical connections can cause high current arcing, which can cause personal injury and/or vehicle damage, including fire. Many electronic devices used in emergency vehicles can create or be affected by electromagnetic interference. Therefore, after installation of any electronic device it is necessary to test all electronic equipment simultaneously to insure that they operate free of interference from other components within the vehicle. Never power emergency warning equipment from the same circuit or share the same grounding circuit with radio communication equipment. All devices should be mounted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and securely fastened to vehicle elements of sufficient strength to withstand the forces applied to the device. Driver and/or passenger air bags (SRS) will affect the way equipment should be mounted. This device should be mounted by permanent installation and within the zones specified by the vehicle manufacturer, if any. Any device mounted in the deployment area of an air bag will damage or reduce the effectiveness of the air bag and may damage or dislodge the device. Installer must be sure that this device, its mounting hardware and electrical supply wiring does not interfere with the air bag or the SRS wiring or sensors. This type of battery provides efficient and long-lasting energy using the safest, most environmentally friendly technology available. In addition, Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are capable of up to 5 times as many charge cycles as traditional Lithium Ion (LiCoO2) batteries! For maximum battery life, there are precautions that must be followed to ensure long battery life. Be sure to follow the information contained in this manual carefully.Installation1.Select a mounting location for the IIC (Intelligent InductiveCharger) base. The base may be mounted on any smooth, flat surface of ambient temperature. This surface can be either horizontal or vertical (provided the base is properly oriented).IMPORTANT! The location selected must not allow the LF35 to be exposed to temperatures above 140°F or below -4°F.This will cause permanent damage to the battery and void the warranty.2.Position the base against the proposed mounting surface. Whendetermining the location for the base, remember there needs to be sufficient room for the LF35 to be easily removed from and returned to the base for charging (see below). Additionally, the Release Button/Diagnostic Display needs to be clearly and readily visible.3.With the base in position, mark the locations of the four mountingholes with an awl, marker or similar tool. Remove the base from the mounting location and using a 1/4 inch bit, drill 4 mounting holes. Be sure to deburr these holes before continuing.4.Return the base to its mounting location and using the hardwareprovided, secure the base to its mounting surface.WiringDC chargers - Using appropriately sized wire, extend the wires coming from the base to an ignition controlled, 12VDC circuit capable of accommodating a current draw of 5 amps. The circuit used should be fused at 7.5 Amps. IMPORTANT! Failure to use an ignition controlled circuit could, over time, result in vehicle battery drain.AC Chargers - AC chargers (120/240 VAC) do not require any special wiring. The base features an AC adaptor and includes a removable power cord that plugs into a standard AC receptacle.OperationAfter installation of the charging base has been completed, mount the LF35 onto the base. Orient the LF35 so that the light is facing away from the release button/diagnostic display. Place the LF35 onto the base so that the four, metal, mounting tabs are located just ahead of the mounting tab retainers. Slide the LF35 backwards until it fully engages the mounting release button with a ‘click’.Once the LF35 is latched into position, the IIC will evaluate the batterystate and report its condition by illuminating the Release Button in one of four colors. Each color represents a different property of the battery and serves to keep the user informed as to the battery’s state:RED -Indicates that the LF35 is properly positioned and the battery is charging.GREEN -Indicates that the battery has been fully charged. Note: This color may remain lit for a few moments after the LF35 hasbeen removed from the charger.AMBER -Indicates that the temperature of the LF35 is outside its acceptable range (140° to -4°F). The user mustimmediately move the light into an area within theacceptable operating range.BLUE -Alerts the user that a metal object has been placed on or near the charger and should be removed. After removal, wait for the Blue light to go out before placing the LF35in the charger. This may take up to 30 seconds. Do notplace any object other than the LF35 on the charger! While the LF35 is on its base, the battery is being constantly monitored and charged as needed. The translucent release button doubles as the diagnostic display and provides important information about the state of the battery. Note that the LF35 can not be activated while on the base.Operating ModesThe LF35 can be used in one of three operating modes. As outlined intheir descriptions, the duration of each mode is estimated using a 76°Fambient temperature. As the temperature moves away in eitherdirection, the estimated battery life will diminish. The further away itmoves, the more significant the reduction of usable battery life. The modes are as followsHigh Power High power mode produces the brightest, mostintense light. To turn the light on in high power mode, press and release the power button. In this mode, a fully charged battery will last forapproximately 3 hours of continuous use.Battery Saver Battery Saver mode is used to extend battery lifewhen a less intense light output is acceptable. Tochange to Battery Saver mode, turn the light on inhigh power, then press and hold the power button. When you see the light output has been reduced, release the button. In this mode, a fully charged battery will last forapproximately 6 hours of continuous use.Alert Mode Alert mode produces a flashing light. To turn the lighton in alert mode, with the power off, press and holdthe power button until the light begins to flash. In this mode, a fully charged battery will last forapproximately 8 hours of continuous use.IMPORTANT! While the LiFe portable light iscapable of flashing, it is not a warning light!Critical Mode When there is approximately 15 minutes of usablebattery life left, the light will automatically switchto critical mode. Until the battery has beenrecharged, no other mode of operation isavailable.During Critical mode, light output is reduced to10% of full intensity. When the light has switched to critical mode, itmust be recharged before it can be returned toservice.ONCE THE LF35 HAS SWITCHED TO CRITICALMODE, IT WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURSTO FULLY CHARGE THE BATTERY.Angle AdjustmentThe angle of the projected light may be adjusted as needed by rotatingthe Angle Adjustment Knob. The total sweep is 180° in 15° increments.Battery Removal / Installation1.Remove the 12 screws securing the bottom cover to the housing.Carefully lift the bottom cover away from the housing anddisconnect the harness connector from the electrical assembly.2.Remove the 7 screws securing the interior mounting plate and liftthe plate out of the housing and from around the harnessconnector.3.With the battery now accessible, remove it from the housing anddisconnect the Red and Black wires from the battery terminals.IMPORTANT! The label on the interior mounting plate lists the batteries that may be used with this product. Do not install any battery other than what is listed on this label.4.To install a battery, connect the RED wire to the POSITIVE (+)battery terminal and connect the BLACK wire to the NEGATIVE (-)battery terminal. CONNECTING THE WIRES TO THE WRONGTERMINAL COULD CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THEBATTERY AND VOID THE WARRANTY! Return the battery to itsinstalled location.5.Route the harness connector through its opening in the InteriorMounting Board. Position the Board in its original mountinglocation, making sure not to pinch any wires. Secure using theoriginal hardware removed in step 2.6.Connect the harness plug to the connector on the bottom cover, position the cover in its original mounting location and secureusing the original hardware removed in step 2.7.Before reinstalling the bottom cover, make sure that the gasketseal is properly positioned and not twisted. Position the cover ontothe housing and secure it to the housing using the originalhardware removed in step 1.8.Place the LF35 onto its base and allow it to fully charge beforereturning it to service.IMPORTANT! When the battery has reached the end of its usablelife, it is important that it be disposed of safely and properly.Contact your local officials for Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)battery disposal guidelines and battery recycling locations foryour area.Attention! If for any reason it becomes necessary to ship the LiFe battery, whether installed in the LiFe Light or not, there are critical shipping guidelines and procedures that need to be strictly followed.

When you’ve been in the optics business as long as we have, you come to learn a thing or two about how to build a better riflescope. Our Quantum Optical System™ takes that knowledge to the next level.Ummatched experienceLeupold mechanical and optical scientists, engineers, and product line managers work in collaborative teams, pooling experience, expertise and the most sophisticated optical design and manufacturing tooling in the industry. material selection and refinementWe start with lead-free, precision-ground, environmentally friendly glass compositions. The geometry of each lens is then maximized through a combination of ZEMAX® optical design software and evaluation using Leupold’s Zygo®interferometer. Wavefront error is minimized. Resolution is increased. The result is razor sharp imaging across the entire spectrum of light conditions.application-specific coatingsFor each scope model, we select from a variety of premium and proprietaryanti-reflective lens coatings (Multicoat 4®, Index Matched, and Xtended Twilight),each carefully chosen for specific use and performance level. The critical natureof proper lens coatings affects light transmission, glare, color resolution, andoptical clarity. As a result, Leupold Quantum Optical System scopes boast totallight transmission from 92% to 98%.For select models, we blacken the lens edges, reducing the diffusion of light fromunwanted glare. The blackened edges aid in directing more of the available lightto your eye to provide the highest resolution and contrast.precision tolerances in assemblyEach of the optical elements must then be precisely aligned and positioned withzero margins for error to achieve maximum optical performance. Every element, from the maintube to the lens system, from adjustment knobs to lubes andadhesives, must work together in perfect harmony to yield the brightest, clearestresolution and color fidelity.cad/cam mechanical engineering processQuantum Optic’s mechanical systems are dynamically engineered withsophisticated design tools that allow rapid prototyping and high-speed, near-zerotolerance machining.4Xtended Twiligh tIndex MatchedMulticoat 4DiamondCoat 2DiamondCoa tLead-FreeArgon/Krypton l e u p ol dWhat is Quantum? It is synergy at work; the “engine”that drives our entire scope-building process. At its core,Quantum is the heart and soul of the world’s best opticsand the products that bear the Leupold® name. For each scope model, we develop a unique set ofspecifications, material requirements, and performanceexpectations. Compromise is swept away. Raising the baris the mission of the day. And then, it all comes together.RICK ReGANEngineering R&D Supervisor(32-year Leupold employee)“ W e solemnly promise never to let doWn on qUality, thecUstomer is entitled to a sqUare deal.”— Markus Friedrich “Fred” Leupold, 1907The Punisher—We built the most advanced recoil test center in the world, featuring machines that can be calibrated to replicate the impact of nearly any kind of rifle on earth. We call it, “The Punisher.” In addition, we can measure the stress on the scope throughout the impact cycle, which helps us design scopes that are rugged, yet lightweight. Our standard impact test for Leupold Golden Ring ® and Mark 4® scopes: 5,000 impacts at 750Gs—the equivalent of a .375 H&H magnum rifle. The Dunk Tank—To test our scopes’ waterproof seals, every Leupold is placed in a specially designed and manufactured tank filled with 120°F water. As the scopes submerge, a vacuum is generated that makes the pressure inside the scope greater than the pressure outside, any flaws in the waterproof seals will let tiny bubbles of gas escape.imPacT shifT TesTing—A Leupold technician places the scopes on the Frame Grabber after impact testing. This will determine if the point of impact has shifted after the 5,000 impacts the scope has received. Leupold’s impact testing protocol is the industry’s most stringent.test. test. and retest. Before any Quantum System optic earns the right to carry the Leupold name, it must first endure the most stringent and harshest testing protocols in the industry. From the extremes of thermal and waterproof testing, to the pounding rigors of shock and impact testing, a Leupold optic must pass the test before it is deemed ready to sit atop your rifle. That is the Quantum Optical System. And the best way to truly understand its importance is to put a Leupold scope to your eye. The difference is instantly—and brilliantly—clear.67Understanding the langUage of opticsLighT TransmissionChances are you’ve heard that scopes “gather light” or “scopes with larger objectives gather more light.” In reality, scopes do not “gather light,” but rather “transmit it.” The lenses in your scope channel the available light into a beam and direct it to your eye. How much of that usable light is transmitted to your eye determines the brightness (and the quality) of the picture you see.exiT PuPiLThe exit pupil of a scope is the circle of lightcontaining the image of the object being viewed as it leaves the scope through the eyepiece. To find the diameter of the exit pupil (in millimeters) divide the objective diameter of the scope (in millimeters) by its magnification level. A 50mm objective scope set at 10x would offer an exit pupil of 5mm in diameter. Place your eye the proper distance from the eyepiece (optimal eye relief) and the full field of view of the scope will be seen. The exit pupil also has an effect on how “bright” an image appears (see Total Light Throughput ™).ToTaL LighT ThroughPuT ™The visible brightness differences from one scope to another are due to a variety of factors, but NONE more important than the exit pupil. The human eye has a pupil dilation range from about 2mm in bright sunlight to 7mm in darkness. In order to get the full potential from a scope, the exit pupil needs to match the pupil dilation of the eye. A 40mmobjective on 10x will have a 4mm exit pupil, an area of 12.6 square millimeters…well suited for early morning or evening shooting. A 50mm objective would increase the exit pupil to 5mm, an area of 19.6 square millimeters. This represents a 56% increase in Total Light Throughput. On some optics, such as a fixed power 4x33mm, the exit pupil is more than 8mm…your eye is awash in light and the image is incredibly bright. So, the advantage of a large objective is that it increases the exit pupil size at higher magnifications.eye reLiefThe space between your eye and the scope’s eyepiece. Ample eye relief keeps your eye a safe distance from the scope during recoil.resoLuTionA crisp, finely detailed image. Without good resolution, the remaining optical elements are useless.conTrasTThe best indicator of proper light management. Resolution and light management (often mistakenly called light gathering) enhance contrast while glare degrades it.ThermaL shock/exPosure TesTing—During our Thermal Shock Test, we rapidly heat and freeze the scopes to determine if they will fog internally in real-world conditions. In the Thermal Exposure Test, we bake and freeze the scopes, then check all moving parts to ensure they move properly.l e u p ol dA reputAtion eArned (And re-eArned).When you carry the moniker of “America’s Optics Authority”, people naturally look to youfor leadership.
