Humans are naturally wired to sleep best at night and be awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to accommodate the unnatural schedule of shift(轮班)work — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.In order to make this adjustment, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help.Arrange to sleep uninterrupted in a quiet, dark room. This means you may have to turn off or unplug your phone, hang darkening curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, and train your family and friends to leave you alone while you sleep.Fit in a nap(小睡). When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a short nap of less than 30 minutes just before work or on a break has been shown to improve alertness and enhance performance.Develop and follow a sleep routine. Its best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Try not to vary this too much on weekends. Your body likes routine.Take extra care to make healthy choices. You may be tempted to reach for unhealthy foods or nicotine to stay awake or alcohol to try to sleep. But ultimately these choices are more harmful than helpful. If you have tried all these things and are still having problems getting enough quality sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist. Sometimes medications(药物治疗)may be helpful and safe. In other cases, there may be an underlying sleep disorder that needs to be addressed.72.The purpose of the text is to .A.persuade workers to have a god sleep.B.advise night workers to keep healthyC.encourage workers to do day workD.help night workers to sleep well73.What does the author recomusend?A.A suitable account of alcohol to help sleep.B.A regular life on weekdays and weekends.C.A dark room without phoebes to sleep in.D.A break for sleeping anytime during the day.74.On which condition should a person turn to a sleep specialist for help?A.If he suffers from a sleep disorder for the first time.B.If a good sleep environment is greatly needed for him.C.If he falls to get quality sleep through his own efforts.D.If he has the problem of bailing to sleep in the daytime.75.We can learn from the test that .A.night workers need a long time to fall asleepB.constant breaks at work help to improve performanceC.it is difficult to create a good sleep environmentD.night work requires people to adjust their body clocks英语阅读理解强化训练参考答案:72—75 DBCD。

George de Mestral saw a new way to stick things together and keep them attached. He was inspired to turn his accidental discovery into a useful product. He borrowed money from a bank, gave up his job, and gave all of his time and energy to the__task. At first, people refused to take him, and the idea, seriously. He took his idea to a weaving center, where he did manage to get the help of one weaver, who made two products out of cotton that worked. However, the cotton wore out quickly. Finally, by using nylon instead of cotton, he made his invention work. It took ten years to develop it. He called it Velcro.Today, Velcro is used everywhere: in shoes, purses, and children’s toys. We can thank de Mestral for discovering and developing a wonderful way to attach things. But the real thanks should go to nature for making the secret known.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

九年级专项练习—阅读理解(1)ALast year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke so quickly that I did not understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because of my poor pronunciation. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything. Then one day I watched an English movie called Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although I could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning by listening for just the key words. My pronunciation improved as well by listening to the conversations in English movies. I discovered that listening to something intere sting is the secret to language learning. I also learned useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right”. I did not understand these sentences at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary. Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn new words and more grammar so that I can have a better understanding of English movies.1. Someone who ______ will most possibly be interested in this passage.A. wants to study abroadB. wants to watch English moviesC. is poor in his English studyD. is learning to use an English dictionary2. What is the best way to learn English well according to the writer?A. Listening to something interesting.B. Remembering many useful sentences.C. Asking teachers questions in class.D. Learning more words and grammar.3. Which is the best title for this passage?A. The ways to learn English wellB. How I learned to learn EnglishC. Why I love watching English moviesD. The secret to improve pronunciationBWhen I was little, I loved picture books. Even if my parents didn’t have time to read the story for me, I could look at the pictures and follow the story. Then I moved on to comic books with their exciting stories of superheroes and, later, to novels. I forgot all about picture books and how wonderful they are.Last week though, my friend gave me A Fish with a Smile by Jimmy Liao, a writer who makes picture books for older readers. I found the story about a thoughtful man and his pet fish very meaningful. I also thought the pictures were beautiful. Now I’ve become a fan of picture books all over again.Jimmy Liao is one of Asia’s most famous picture book writers and has had best-sellers at home and abroad. I just finished reading one of his most popular books, Turn left, Turn right. The book is about a man and a woman who meet by chance in a park. The woman scribbles down her phone number, but the rain washes it away and they never find each other again. The story touches your heart because the two characters never realize that they are neighbors.Jimmy Liao’s pictures are often funny and cute. He included a rabbit in his book, Secrets in the Woods and the rabbits has re-appeared in his books ever since, partly because readers liked it so much. However, his stories can also be serious. They show what it’s like to feel alone in the city, fear(恐惧) of losing your job or someone you love.I think this is why Jimmy Liao’s career has been so popular.4. According to Paragraph 1, the writer ______.A. used to like comic booksB. found books with no pictures boringC. does not like reading novelsD. thinks picture books are for children5. According to the passage, Turn left, turn right can be described a(an) ______ story.A. funnyB. lovingC. boringD. exciting6. The underlined word “scribbles” in Paragraph 3 is probably close to ______.A. writesB. turnsC. looksD. speaks7. According to the passage, the topics of Liao’s work are mentioned except ______.A. fearB. lonelinessC. funD. courageCHave you ever noticed that aside from the furniture and decoration, many people’s homes seem almost the same? Well, some people have had enough of that and prefer to live in homes that are being the only one of its kind. Some people want homes that are environmentally friendly. Earthships, for example, are made from mud(泥) and materials that would be bottles. Many use wind or the energy from the sun, collect and recycle water, and have a greenhouse in which to grow food. The Phooenix Earthship in the US is a place which can be used as a holiday accommodation, so if you want to try it out, you can.Shipping containers(集装箱) are now being reused to make another kind of environmentally friendly home. They can be used for a small holiday house in the country or connected to make coffee blocks, such as those at Container City in London, England.Other people are interested in homes that look different, like the Steel(钢铁) House in Texas, USA. As you can tell by its name, it is made out of steel. The designer, Robert Bruno, makes it look like cross between a machine and an animal.Especially in crowded areas like Hong Kang, many people want a home that makes the most of space. Artist Gray Chang has achieved this. He found a clever way of using walls which can be moved and fold-down(折叠) items like tables and a bed to change his tiny flat into a home with twenty-four possible rooms.Seeing all of these examples of imaginative homes, what would you like to do to make your own home as a special place to live?8. Earthships are made from ______.A. old shipsB. shipping containersC. recycled materialsD. moving walls9. Gray Chang changed his room because he______.A. wanted more roomsB. thought it was crowdedC. had too much furnitureD. found a way to move walls10. All of the homes mentioned in the article are _____ in common.A. expensive to buildB. strange-lookingC. good for the environmentD. unusual places to live11. Deep in my stomach, where I keep all my sadness, I felt it like a kick in the ribs(肋骨).Children ask all kinds of questions about my son. “Why is he in that?”“Why can’t he walk?” “What’s wrong with him?” But questions are easy. For children, questions always have answers.“I feel sorry for him” is not a question. It is a statement of fact. I know there are many people who feel the same. Many people who see my son, they feel sorry. They feel sad. But adults know how to hide. We know what not to say. This little girl was a leak(漏洞) in the system, which tells me my son’s wheelchair is “very sad”, tells me he is a “poor thing”, prefers to see people like my son as recipients of charity(慈善救助对象), rather than seeing them as neighbors, classmates, teachers, and friends. So I stood there and I realized I am very small. I am only one person. Then last week, sitting by the pool with my husband and my little boy, I heard it again. This time it’s from a teen, maybe 19-year-old. He had seen us there a few times. Today he had a girl with him. “Something’s wrong with that kid,” he whispered to her, “Did you see his back? He can’t walk. So sad…” I felt it more than I heard it. And _________. Her agreement.“Nothing sad about it,” she said, looking at my son with so much kindness. “My brother wa s in the Special Olympics. That kid is cute.”I closed my eyes to keep from crying. I wanted to hug her. I wanted to tell her how lovely she is. More than anything, I wanted to thank her for reminding me that I am not the only one who sees my son for who he is. I am only one person, but I am not alone.12. What happened to the writer’s son?A. He fell off the tree.B. He couldn’t walk.C. He had a car accident.D. He wasn’t able to talk.13. Hawaii"s native minority is demanding a greater degree of sovereignty over its own affairs. But much of the archipelago"s political establishment, which includes the White Americans who dominated until the second world war and people of Japanese, Chinese and Filipino origins, is opposed to the idea. The islands were annexed by the US in 1898 and since then Hawaii"s native peoples have fared worse than any of its other ethnic groups. They make up over 60 percent of the state"s homeless, suffer higher levels of unemployment and their life span is five years less than the average Hawaiians. They are the only major US native group without some degree of autonomy. But a sovereignty advisory committee set up by Hawaii"s first native governor, Joahn Waihee, hasgiven the natives" cause a major boost by recommending that the Hawaiian natives decide by themselves whether to reestablish a sovereign Hawaiian nation. However, the Hawaiian natives are not united in their demands. Some just want greater autonomy within the state -- as enjoyed by many American Indiannatives over matters such as education. This is a position supported by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), a state agency set up in 1978 to represent the natives" interests and which has now become the moderate face of the native sovereignty movement. More ambitious is the Ka Lahui group, which declared itself a new nation in 1987 and wants full, official independence from the US.But if Hawaiian natives are given greater autonomy, it is far from clear how many people this will apply to. The state authorities only count as native those people with more than 50 percent Hawaiian blood.Native demands are not just based on political grievances, though. They also want their claim on660,000 hectares of Hawaiian crown land to be accepted. It is on this issue that native groups are facing most opposition from the state authorities. In 1933, the state government paid the OHA US 136 million in back rent on the crown land and many officials say that by accepting this payment the agency has given up its claims to legally own the land. The OHA has vigorously disputed this.1. Hawaii"s native minority refers to_________________.A. Hawaii"s ethnic groupsB. people of Filipino originC. the Ka Lahui groupD. people with more than 50% Hawaiian blood2. Which of the following statements is true ofthe Hawaiian natives?A. Sixty percent of them are homeless or unemployed.B. their life span is 5 years shorter than average Americans.C. Their life is worse than that of other ethnic groups in Hawaii.D. He suggested the native people decide for themselves.D. He is leading the local independence movement.4. Which of the following groups holds a less radical attitude on the matter of sovereignty?A. American Indian natives.B. Office of Hawaiian Affairs.C. The Ka Lahui group.D. The Hawaiian natives.5. Even if you know full well that you could never afford such an expensive vehicle, you don’t forget the name, or the car. Why? You have been subjected to product placement.Companies pay a film to place their products in the movie. Product placement took off in the West in the 1980s and is now catching on in China. Two Hunan Satellite TV dramas arerecent examples:Ugly Wudi and Let’s Go Watch the Meteror Shower(《一起去看流星雨》).Shampoo, mobile phones, cars and fitness centers-anything can be product-placed. Advertisers value the mass appeal of the movies, knowing that a successful film can showcase their goods to hundreds of thousands of viewers. But when product placement takes over, artistic considerations can take a back seat.Cai Zhiyong has been product-placing for years. The Beijing-based advertiser admits there is a conflict between art and business. He explains the way one ad works. In If You are the One(《非诚勿扰》),the actress Shu Qi plays a flight attendant. The movie contains product placement for airline companies.Cash-strapped filmmakers often have to sacrifice the quality of their work because they need money form advertisers. In the original story for Meteor Shower, the heroine’s mother owned an ice cream shop. But no ice cream company wanted to sponsor the film. For this reason, the story was changed. In the film the man drinks20 cups of milk tea where it was originally intended that he would eat ice cream.Even here tough, you may see the power of business over the movies, since the script was perhaps written so a product could be placed-whether it was ice cream or milk tea. 1. Somewhere within its protein, fat, 100,000 miles of blood vessels and 100 billion nerve cells, it helps us remember where we put our gym shoes. Change our temperature so we don't die because of the heat or cold. Speed us up or slow us down. Help us choose between orange juice or orange flavored drinks. Its complexity are stunning, far beyond anything most of us can imagine. To keep this work of art as polished as possible we need to eat right, exercise and keep mentally stimulated.Good nutrition helps brain cells communicate with each other. Exercise stimulates a hormone in our brain that improves memory. Mental stimulation keeps you sharp even as you age.“It's very important that we tell people to be physically active and mentally active,” said neurologist Malcolm Stewart.“People cannot stop aging, but you're able to reduce the damage; you're able to keep the function up.”Following are Dr. Stewart's advice for improving brain health:●NutritionAvoid fast food. Follow the old adage(格言): For breakfast, eat like a king; for lunch, like aqueen; for supper, like a beggar.●ExerciseDo a combination of stretching aerobic and muscle strengthening every day.●Mental gamesTry to have a sense of hope about the future. Two years later, my schedule reads more like a traveler’s than a student's does , having spent 18 months abroad under university programmes.I have seen many students abandon their studies, desiring to see the world before making any long-term decisions. My advice for would-be globe travelers is to choose a degree subject that you find truly interesting, and use the resources available to see as much of the world as possible. So no longer does the “travel or study" question need an either/or response ;with a little research and organization, it’s possible to combine the two. Two programmes that allow you to do this are "Erasmus" and "U21".The Erasmus Programme aims to increase student mobility within the European Union and associated states. Participants under this programme get to spend a semester (学期)at a foreign university, often receiving a grant(助学金)from the EU or their home department. By the start of the next academic year, more than one million students will have benefited under Erasmus. Not only do you get to sit through hours of lectures in the local language , you also gain cultural experience in the country. France, Germany and Spain are always popular, but the EU encourages applications to countries where less popular languages are spoken, such as Greece and Portugal. Theoretically» students of any subject can participate in the Erasmus Programme , although it depends on the involvement of your specific department in the project. The reality is that, in many universities, the programme is most commonly intended for modern language students. For a French student like me, Melbourne in Australia seems an unlikely- destination ,yet I was sent there in my second year. U21 is a multinational association of universities throughout the world, which have united to offer their students the opportunity to study abroad for a semester. The applicant's destination depends on the links between their department and the corresponding departments of member universities, which can be found in countries such as New Zealand , China , Singapore , Canada, Sweden and the United States.9. They used the resources available to see the world.D. They responded to the “travel or study " question.10. Who is most likely to be chosen by the Erasmus Programme?A. A student from the EU.B. A student who would be a global traveller.C. A modern language student.D. A student involved in a specific department.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.
