(1)Questions 1 and 2 will be based on the following news item.Recently, a photo showing a visitor on the Great Wall last week aroused a heated discussion on the Internet. They called it the "great queue of China". It was, with the famous structure snaking to the horizon behind him completely hidden by a mass of other tourists. The vast imperial palace, the Forbidden City, at one point welcomed more than 180,000 visitors in a single day. In the desert at Dunhuang, at least two camels transporting tourists reportedly died from overwork in the Golden Week. And Chinese media said road traffic was up by thirteen percent on last year, causing unprecedented jams. (2)Questions 3 and 4 will be based on the following news item. These days, German government has been criticized for not doing enough to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I.Germany has spent less on events than some other European countries. And the events which have taken place have been seen as half-hearted by critics.Traditionally in Germany the First World War is overshadowed by the Second World War. History teaching in German schools tends to focus on the crimes of the Nazis rather than what happened a generation earlier. And since 1945 there's been a strong aversion in Germany to anything that might be seen as glorifying militarism. So many people here are uncomfortable with any anniversary of a war or a battle. There's still some disagreement among historians about who was responsible for World War I. But having spent the last 70 years making up for Nazi guilt, many Germans have little appetite to now take on the blame for the First World War, too. Question 3.What makes the German government be criticized recently?Question 4.What's the attitude of German people towards militarism?

Pigs are not native to North America. They were first introduced to California by Spanish and Russian explorers and settlers many centuries ago. In the early times, pigs were allowed to wander freely and search of food. This practice also allowed many pigs to escape from farms and live in the wild, which became a problem.

Like most of his childhood friends, Ronaldo began his soccer career playing barefoot in the streets of his neighborhood. (11) At the age of 14, he joined a soccer club and only two years later became the star of the club scoring a total of 58 goals in 60 matches and (12) earned himself a reputation for his explosive pace and outstanding finishing skills. His goal-scoring record and unusual alertness led him to be included in the Brazilian World Cup winning team the following year. After the World Cup, many top European football clubs were trying to sign him. Since his transfer to the Dutch team, Ronaldo’s biography is one of success after success. Since the 1998 World Cup he has suffered two serious knee injuries that have severely limited his appearances. Just when people began to wonder whether Ronaldo would be able to continue with his football career, he proved to the world that he still could play. (13)In the World Cup held in Korea and Japan, the magical striker won the Golden Shoe award. He helped Brazil capture its fifth World Cup championship. A good example is the words “motor” and “hotel”. Many years ago someone linked them together into the word “motel”. (14) A motel is a small hotel near the road where people travelling in cars can stay for the night. Other words come from the first letters of names of groups or devices. A device to find objects that cannot be seen called Radio Detecting and Ranging became “Radar”. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is usually called NATO. (15) Experts say that English has more words that explain the same thing than any other language. For example, the words “large,”“huge,”“vast,”“massive,” and “enormous” all mean something really “big”. People often ask how many words there are in the English language. Well, no one really knows. (16)The Oxford English Dictionary lists about six hundred fifteen thousand words. Yet the many scientific words not in the dictionary could increase the number to almost one million. And experts are never really sure how to count English words. For example, the word “mouse”, a mouse is a small creature having pointed nose and small ears with hairless tails. But “mouse”has another very different meaning. A “mouse”is also a hand-held device used to help control a computer, If you are counting words do you count “mouse” two times?4.A motel is usually for people who________.A.have no place to stayB.lose their waysC.travel in carsD.live far from roads正确答案:C 涉及知识点:短文5.We can learn from the passage that experts believe_______.A.English has many words to explain the same thingB.English speakers always invent combined wordsC.the number of English words could be countedD.words of two meanings shouldn’t be counted twice正确答案:A 涉及知识点:短文6.The Oxford English Dictionary lists about _______A.615,000 wordsB.650,000 wordsC.1,615,000 wordsD.1,650,000 words正确答案:A 涉及知识点:短文听力原文:The British summer is extremely beautiful. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this picturesque scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them? Butterfly Conservation in the UK is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected. (12) According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in the British Isles, more than three-quarters of them are suffering a declining population. Moreover, half of all butterfly species are on the verge of extinction. The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a low record in the past three years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler and their habitat is also degrading. Fortunately, Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year compared to the last few summers. Conservationists believe the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies. Sir David Attenborough, President of Butterfly Conservation, said, “(13) Butterflies in profusion tell us that all is well with nature. When they decline it’s a warning that other wildlife will soon be heading the same way”. The organizers hope the survey will help raise public awareness of the value of butterflies in the UK. Butterflies give an indication of the well-being of nature and the environment.7.According to the passage, a survey about butterflies is carried on by________.A.British IslesB.British Butterfly ConservationC.Environment Conservation in the UKD.Sir David Attenborough正确答案:B 涉及知识点:短文8.How many percent of butterfly species are suffering the population declination?A.More than 59%.B.More than 50%.C.More than 45%.D.More than 75%. 9.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Butterflies in profusion tell us that all is well with nature.B.Butterfly species’ declining indicates that other wild lives will face extinction.C.The butterflies’ situation tells us the relationship between nature and human being.D.The butterflies survey makes public aware of the importance of butterflies. Before we start our first lab, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the workbook we’ll be using. (14)The first thing I’d like to point out is that the workbook contains a very large amount of material—far more than you could ever handle in a single semester. (15)What you’re supposed to do is choose the experiments and activities that you want to do—within a certain framework, of course. Part of my job is to help you make your choices. Next, I’d like to mention that in each workbook chapter, there are usually two subsections. The first is called “Experiments”and the second is called “Activities”. (16) In the “Experiments”section, the workbook gives full instructions for all the experiments, including alternate procedures. Choose the procedure you wish—there’s plenty of equipment available. In the “Activities” section, you will find suggestions for projects that you can do on your own time. You’ll see that there are usually no detailed instructions for the activities—you’re supposed to do them in your own way. If there are no questions, let’s turn to Chapter One now.10.How long does it take to cover the workbook material?A.For more than a term.B.For less than a semester.C.For no more than a term.D.For no less than a year. 11.According to the passage, students would choose the experiments and activitiesA.under a set structureB.in accordance with instructionsC.based on discussionsD.within some frameworks正确答案:D 涉及知识点:短文12.Where can you find detailed procedures in the workbook?A.In “Preface” section.B.In “Directions” section.C.In “Experiments” section.D.In “Activities” section. While nearly all men are poor at public speaking, women are even worse. This is partly because women cannot tell jokes, but also because we are better at self-awareness and therefore know that our speech is average and the audience would rather be doing something else—(17) thoughts that do little to enhance performance. (18) To combat fear and innate hopelessness, I try quite hard to be better. Every time a book about public speaking arrives on my desk, I skim it for tips. Mostly they tell you to “relax”and to “be yourself”—(19)which is downright irresponsible. This works only for the one in a billion who is born a brilliant speaker. Being good, for everyone else means reaching such an elevated level of nervousness and artifice that you can present an entirely convincing picture of authenticity and relaxation. I have only come across two bits of helpful advice. The first is practice, practice, practice. This is a bore because it takes a lot of time, but there is no way round it. (20)The second is to junk all aids-PowerPoint is a crutch. It is an ugly thing in itself and must be thrown away if you want to talk smoothly. Equally, you must never read a speech. Write it, learn it and then leave it at home, speaking with minimal notes.13.Which is NOT mentioned as the reason why women are poor at public speaking?A.Women cannot tell jokes.B.Women are better at self-awareness.C.Women do little to enhance performance.D.Women know their speech is average. 14.According to the passage, which of the following statements is CORRECT?A.Men are poorer than women at public speaking.B.Books on public speaking work for people poor at speaking.C.Being good means reaching a usual level of artifice.D.The speaker tries hard to combat innate hopelessness. 15.What’s the speaker’s attitude towards books about public speaking?A.Positive.B.Grateful.C.Neutral.D.Distrustful. 16.The speaker suggests all the following EXCEPT________.A.writing a speechB.using PowerPointC.practicing moreD.taking minimal notes正确答案:B 涉及知识点:短文。

hat Kind Of Dogs Are Sled Dogs?
In books and movies like Call of the Wild, huge, vicious huskies pull sleds for hundreds of miles over the Alaskan tundra. A Moment of Science wonders, what kind of dogs are sled dogs?
Husky
Most champion sled dogs are not pure husky: in fact, the “Alaskan Husky” isn’t really a breed at all:it’s a mix of various breeds. Although not pure bred, every sled dog must be carefully bred for life on the trail.
The dogs need heavy coats to protect them from the cold, and tough feet to prevent injuries. Unlike the tough dogs in the movies, dogs with softer feet wear booties when they run.
Sled Dogs
The dogs also need compact bodies to maximize endurance. The sled dogs’ remarkable endurance is t hanks to their large heart-to-body ratio, and their ability to carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles, which is about three times that of a human being
On film, large dogs seem powerful, but their size decreases their ability to use oxygen efficiently. In competitive dog-sledding, dogs usually weigh less than 55 pounds and can comfortably trot over 70 miles a day.
Temperment
A sled dog also needs the right temperament. They must love running and be sociable and obedient. Like wild dogs, each team has a hierarchy, but the dogs struggle for position by taking aggressive or submissive postures such as squealing and rolling. Real dogfights are rare because the dogs are carefully introduced and trained before going out on the trail.
The careful crossing of northern dogs, like Malamutes, with southern breeds like Greyhounds produces dogs with the right stuff to be sled dogs.
