Trailing snowboarding are sledding and hiking, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report in the journal Wildemess and Environmental Medicine. The most common problems were broken bones and sprains, accounting for half of all cases.“We want people to participate in outdoor recreational activities But we want people to recognize that there‟s cause for concern and people can and do get injured,‟‟study co-author Arlene Greenspan said Tuesday. She said injuries can be avoided through planning and preparation: making sure your fitness level and skills match the activity and using proper equipment like helmets.Greenspan said the study is the first to look at injuries from all activities, instead of individual sports or geographic areas. The researchers looked at data on injuries from outdoor activities treated at 63 hospitals in 2004 and 2005.They calculated that almost 213,000 people annually were treated for such injuries nationwide.About half of those injured are young, between ages 10 and 24 and half of the injuries are caused by falls.Males are injured at twice the rate of females, but the research did n‟t look at the reasons. “It could be that males are more risky or it could be that males just participate more than females, or a combination of both,” said Greenspan. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult and visual sightings are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when with the help of the Navy they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy‟s formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potent potential enemies.Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption for the first time and that they plan similar studies.Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measures changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second—slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important is that different layers of ocean water can act as channels for sounds focusing them in the same way a stethoscope does when it carries faint noises from a patien t‟s chest to a doctor‟s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean especially low-frequency ones can often travel thousands of miles.Word Bankattach v.连接navy n. 海军volcanic eruption火山爆发biologist n.生物学家news conference新闻发布会stethoscope n.听诊器( )5.The article is chiefly about________.A.an effort to protect an endangered marine speciesB.the civilian use of a military detection systemC.the exposure of a US Navy top-secret weaponD.a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales( )6.The underwater listening system was originally designedA.to trace and locate enemy vesselsB.to monitor deep.sea volcanic eruptionsC.to study the movement of ocean currentsD.to replace the global radio communications network( )7.The deep-sea listening system makes use of________.A.the sophisticated technology of focusing sounds under waterB.the capability of sound to travel at high speedC.the unique property of layers of ocean water in transmitting soundD.low-frequency sounds travelling across different layers of water( )8.It can be inferred from the article that_______.A.new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whalesB.blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening system C.opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to usemilitary technologyD.military technology has great potential in civilian use9.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the US Navy underwater listening network?A.It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists.B.It has been replaced by a more advanced system.C,It became useless to the military after the cold war.D.It is indispensable in protecting endangered species.Reading C词数336 类别历史地理难度★★★建议用时7‟ 实际用时In the sixteenth century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration, Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail around the world, As a young Portuguese noble, he served the king of Portugal, but he became involved in the marsh of political plots at court and lost the king's favor. After he was dismissed from service to the king of Portugal, he offered to serve the future Emperor CharlesV of Spain.A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees W longitude to Spain and all the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan offered to prove that the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one of these ships was exploring the topography of South America in search of a water route across the continent. This ship sank, but the remaining four ships searched along the southern peninsula of South America. Finally they found the passage they sought near a latitude of 50 degrees S.Magellan named this passage the Strait of All Saints, but today we know it as the Strait of Magellan. One ship deserted while in this passage and returned to Spain,so fewer sailors were fortunate to gaze at that first panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Those who remained crossed the meridian we now call the International Date Line in the early spring of 1521 after ninety-eight days on the Pacific Ocean. During those long days at sea, many of Magellan‟s men died of starvation and disease.Later Magellan became involved in an insular conflict in the Philippines and was killed in a tribal battle. Only one ship and seventeen sailors under the command of the Basque navigator Elcano survived to complete the westward journey to Spain and thus prove once and for all that the world is round, with no cliff at the edge. The sixteenth century was an age of great exploration.Word Banknoble n.贵族decree n.政令,法令papal adj.教皇的panorama n.全景dismiss v.免职,开除longitude n. 经度topography n.地形( )10. The most famous of these eruptions occurred in A.D.79.The volcano had been inactive for centuries. There was little warning of the coming eruption, although one account discovered by archaeologists says that a hard rain and a strong wind had disturbed the calm during the previous night. Early the next morning, the volcano poured a huge river of molten rock down upon Herculaneum, completely burying the city and filling in the harhor with clotted lava.Meanwhile, on the other side of the mountain, stone and ash rained down on Pompeii. Sparks from the burning ash ignited the combustible roofs quickly. Large portions of the city were destroyed in great fire. Fire, however, was not the only cerise of destruction. Poisonous sulphuric gases saturated the air. These heavy gases were not drifting in the atmosphere and therefore sank toward the earth and suffocated people.Over the years, excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum have revealed a great deal about the behavior of the volcano By analyzing data, much as a zoologist cut up a specimen animal, scientist have concluded that the eruption changed large portions of the area’s geography. For instance, it turned the Sarno River from its course and raised the level of the beach along the Bay of Naples. Meteorologists studying these even have also concluded that Vesuvius caused a huge tidal wave that affected the world’s climate. In addition to making these investigations, archaeologists have been able to study the skeletons of victims by using distilled water to wash away the volcanic ash.By strengthening the brittle bones with acrylic paint, scientists have been able to examine the skeletons and draw conclusions about the diet and habits of the residents. Finally, the excavations at both Pompeii and Herculaneum have yielded many examples of classical art, such as jewelry made of bronze, which is an alloy of copper and tin.Word Bankvolcano n.火山archaeologist n.考古学家ignite v.点燃skeleton n.骨架eruption n.喷发molt v.熔化saturate v.浸透( )8.Herculaneum and its harbor were buried under_______ lava.A.1iquid B.solid C.flowing D.gas( )9.The poisonous gases were______ in the air.A. not able to float B.visible C.not able to evaporate D.invisible ( )10.Scientists analyzed data about Vesuvius in the same way that a zoologist__________ a specimen.A.describes in detail B.studies by cutting apart C.photographs D.chart ( )11._______ have concluded that the volcanic eruption caused a tidal wave.A.Scientist who study oceans B.Scientist who study atmospheric conditionsC.Scientist who study ash D.Scientist who study animal behavior( )12.Scientists have used _______water to wash away volcanic ash from the skeletons of victims.A.bottled B.volcanic C.purified D. seaReading D词数409 类别人类环境难度★★★★建议用时8’实际用时_________ Frustrated with delays in Sacramento,Bay Area officials said on Thursday they planned to take matters into their own hands to manage the region’S growing pile of electronic trash.A San Jose councilwoman and a san Francisco supervisor said they would propose local plans aimed at controlling electronic waste if the California law-making body fails to act on two bills delayed in the Assembly. They are among a growing number of California cities and counties that have expressed the same intention.Environmentalists and local governments are increasingly concerned about the toxic threat caused by old electronic devices and the cost of safely recycling those products. An estimated 6 million televisions and computers are stocked in California homes, and an additional 6,000 to 7,000 computers become outdated every day.The machines contain high levels of lead and other dangerous substances, and are already banned from California landfills.Legislation by Senator Byron Sher would require consumers to pay a recycling fee of up to $30 on every new machine containing a cathode ray tube.Used in almost all video monitors and televisions.those devices contain four t0 eight pounds of lead each. The fees would go toward setting up recycling programs, providing grants to non-profit agencies that reuse the tubes and rewarding manufacturers that encourage recycling.A separate bill by Los Angeles-area Senator Gloria Romero would require high-tech manufacturers to develop programs to recycle so-called e-waste.If passed, the measures would put California at the forefront of national efforts to manage the refuse of the electronic age.But high-tech groups, including the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and the American Electronics Association.oppose the measures, arguing that fees of up to$30 will drive consumers to online, out-of-state retailers.“What really needs to occur is consumer education. The common place among all of these social networks is that they provide a place for people to interact, rather than a place to go to read or listen to “content ”.Web 2.0Social networks are considered to be web 2.0.What does this mean? To understand this,it’s important to understand what the original web did(often called web 1.0).Back in the nineties, the Internet—or web—was a place to go to read articles, listen to music, get information, etc. Most people didn’t contribute to the sites. They just“browsed”the site, and took advantage of the information or resources provided. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the mostbeautiful bridges in the world. It is also one of the tallest. The ides for a bridge across the strait had been around for many years, because San Francisco suffered from its isolated location. The only practical way to get across the San Francisco Bay was to take a ferry. Planning for the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1916, but the design underwent many changes before construction finally started in 1933.It was not easy to get the project started. Financing had to be found, and there was much opposition to the very idea of a bridge. The US Navy, for example, feared that a bridge would obstruct ship traffic. The Southern Pacific Railroad, which ran the ferry fleets, feared competition from the bridge. Many experts did not believe that it would be possible to build such a long bridge under such difficult circumstances. A suspension bridge of that length had never been built before. There are strong currents and heavy winds on the bridge site, which made construction dangerous. The construction of the bridge finally began in 1933. The construction work set new standards for safety—workers were among the first required to wear hard hats, and an innovative safety net saved the lives of nineteen men while the bridge was built. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, when the bridge opened to pedestrians. The bridge was finished ahead of schedule and cost much less than originally budgeted.Today, the Golden Gate Bridge has s main span of 4,200 feet(almost a mile)and a total length of 8,981 feet, or about 1.7 miles, making it one of the longest bridges in the world(it was the longest until 1964).About 40 million automobiles cross the bridge every year:proof that the bridge serves a vital function.Word Banklandmark n.地标span v. 跨越obstruct v.妨碍suspension bridge斜拉桥circumstance n.情况innovative a.创新的( )15.The Golden Gate Bridge__________.A.spans the San Francisco BayB.is the best-known symbol of the United StatesC.spans the Golden Gate StraitD.is painted gold and has a gold-plated gate at each end( )16.The idea for a bridge across the Golden Gate Strait_________.A.was first suggested in 1916 B.was perfected by Irving Morrow in 1933 C.was around for many years before construction startedD.was first put forth by Joseph Strauss( )17.Which of the following statements is NOT what the bridge opponent claim? The scientists found that a little extra sleep helps people learn better. They found out that people who learn a new skill and then sleep well are better at performing the skill the next day.Matthew Walker of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and his team studied the effects of sleep on the ability to 1earn to do simple skills. They tested 62 people who carried out a number of small experiments. The people were trained to perform a simple skill with their fingers. They were asked to push a series of numbers on a computer keyboard as quickly as possible. They used the hand they do not normally use for such activities. The people were trained in the morning and then tested twelve hours later. The scientists found that their speed and performance did not improve greatly. Yet the results were different when the people were trained at night and tested the next day. Af ter a good night’s sleep, their performance improved by about 20 percent. The researchers looked closely at the brain activity of the people in the study. They found that the improvement seemed to be directly linked to a kind of sleep at the end of a person’s normal sleeping period.Doctor Walker said that this is the kind of sleep that many people do not experience if they get up early in the morning. The findings could help musicians, doctors or anyone else who is learning difficult skills that have to be repeated.
