Tom was a successful writer. He had written a new play and it would / was going to be performed on the stage. Not surprisingly, Tom was invited to give
some advice on the scene lighting and any other things that will make the play successful.
But Tom was a man who is difficult to please, as he had his own thought of what each thing should be like. In a scene, the young lovers / couples were watching (一说walking in) the sunset together before singing love songs. So they must make a beautiful scene of sunset (It was necessary to produce wonderful lighting effects).
