AHave you ever heard of an old saying? Intelligence is a born ability while goodness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after a ll. Choice can be hard.I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, an d I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t and I wasn’t sure what to expect.MacKenzie told me I should go for it.As a young boy,I’d been a garage inventor.I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me,and finally said,“That sounds like a really goodidea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t alr eady have a good job.”That logic made some sense to me,and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision.Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally,I decided I had to give it a shot.I didn’t think I’d r egret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration,I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.21.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?A. His dream of being an inventor.B. The support of his wife.C. The greatly increasing usage of the Internet.D. Millions of exciting titles.22. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?A. The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.B. He would be very excited if he tried it out.C. H e would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.D. The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him.23. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Cleverness and KindnessB. The Starting of AmazonC. Following My PassionD. We Are What We Choose24. We can know from the passage that_______.A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the authorB. the author wanted someone else to try the ideaC. the author might not regret if he failed the ideaD. the author might go back to his boss if he failedBWith the development of modern society, human beings are increasingly invading wild animals’ habitat as well as the wild plants’. Nearly a third of the world’s cacti (仙人掌) are facing the threat of extinction, according to a shocking global assessment of the effects.Cacti are an important provider of food and water to desert wildlife ranging from wolves and deer to tortoises, bats and birds, and these fauna spread the plants’seeds in return. But the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s first worldwide health check of the plants says that they are coming under huge pressure from human activities such as land use changes, commercial and residential developments and shrimp farming. But the paper said the driver of cacti species extinction was the “uncontrolled collection of live plants and private decorating collections, and annual agriculture.”The findings were described as “disturbing” by Inger Anderson, the IUCN’s director-general. “They confirm that the scale of the illegal wildlife trade, including the trade in plants is much greater than we had previously thought, and that wildlife illegal trade concerns many more species than the elephants which tend to receive global attention.”Cacti are almost always delicious but unlike most others, they store water in their stems alone, enabling them to survive extreme draughts. The plants can be as small as one centimeter in diameter and grow above 19 meters in height. Well over half of the species are used by humans for display decoration, food or medicine. Almost 1,500 types of cacti were surveyed by the IUCN specialists over a five-year period, mostly in America.Dealing with the illegal trade is a hard task as they can be hidden in suitcases or even socks. While countries such as Peru have made progress in blocking the illegal trade, the IUCN is calling for more strictly carrying out the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) in the “hotspots’’ of Uruguay, Brazil and Chile. Mexico has made advances but still has work to do, according to Goettsch.25. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?A. What causes cacti species extinctionB. What gives people pressureC. What IUCN has foundD. What farmers have planted26. In Inger Anderson’s opinion, _____________.。

Each Main street Movies store has three main sections:1.New Releases Wall.2.Film library.3.Video Games.New Releases Wall.Almost 70 percent of movie rentals are new releases, and that is the first place where most customers go when they enter the store. The center section of shelves on this wall holds Hottest Hits. When new titles come into the store, place them on this wall in alphabetical order. The shelves beside Hottest Hits are called Recent Releases. The New Releases Wall, including the Hottest Hits and Recent Releases shelves, holds about 350 titles.Film Library. The thousands of titles in the Film Library are organized into categories. The films within each category are displayed alphabetically. Here are the categories and their two-letter computer codes:Foreign Language titles include films that were originally made in a foreign language and films with foreign language subtitles.A sticker on the back of each box tells which type of film it is.Video Game. All the video games in Main street Movies are arranged in alphabetical order.Although video games represent only a small percentage of our inventory(库存),they are stolen more often than any other type of goods in our store. Therefore, video games are never displayed on the shelves.Shelves in the Video Game section hold cardboard with pictures and information about each game. When a customer wants to rent a particular game, you then find the game from the locked case behind the counter.1.Whom do you think this passage is most probably addressed to?A.The readers in the store.B.The manager of the store.C.The customers in the store.D.The salespersons of the store.2.In which order are the new movies moved in the store?A.From Hottest Hits to Film Library to Recent Releases.B.From Film Library to Hottest Hits to Recent Releases.C.From Recent Releases to Film Library to Hottest Hits.D.From Hottest Hits to Recent Releases to Film Library.3.Why can’t video games be seen on the shelves?A.Because they’ve been sold out.B.Because they’re in the storehouse.C.Because they’re in a loc ked case behind the counter.D.Because they represent a small percentage of the inventory.4.How can a customer find a film with foreign language subtitles?A.Check the computer.B.Look at the back of the box.C.Check the center section.D.Watch a few minutes of the film.4.DThe Enigma (谜)of BeautyThe search for beauty spans centuries and continents.Paintings of Egyptians dating back over 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs (假发)of long, white hair to make themselves attractive.Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance. There is at least one good reason for the desire to be attractive:beauty is power.Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier. But what exactly is beauty? It's difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it.And our awareness of it may start at a very early age.In one set of studies,six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones. The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologists, men consistently showed a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist.According to scientists, the mind unconsciously tells men and women that these traits —the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders —equal health and genetic well-being.Not everyone thinks the same way, however." Our hardwiredness can be changed by all sorts of expectations —mostly cultural," says C.Loring Brace,an anthropologist at the University of Michigan. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another.Look at most Western fashion magazines:the women on the pages are thin. But is this "perfect" body type for women worldwide? Scientists' answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures. For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another.Although there do seem to be certain physical traits considered universally appealing,it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard.Beauty really is,as the saying goes,in the eye of the beholder.1.People's ideas about beauty ________.A.have existed since ancient timesB.can be easily describedC.have little influence on a person's successD.are based upon strict criteria2.In Paragraph 3,the babies in the study ________.A.were rated for their appearanceB.were entered in a beauty contestC.were shown photos of a group of college studentsD.were able to tell attractive faces from unattractive ones3.The underlined word “traits” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.A.qualitiesB.measurementsC.judgmentsD.standards4.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.the ideas of beauty vary as people grow upB.the search for beauty is rooted in lack of confidenceC.the standards for beauty are based on scientific researchesD.the understanding of beauty depends on cultural backgrounds二、阅读填空(共2小题)5.

ASports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us.I have been into sports since I was six years old.I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play. When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski.I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before.I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met.H e didn’t expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn’t.After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life’s challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked off,not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted.I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life.My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students.I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.1.Different from other coaches, Coach Brian ________.A.concentrated on skill trainingB.expected the team to do well in their studiesC.trained the team to the edge of deathD.asked the team to do more reading than training2.T he underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means ________.A.paid no attentionB.showed no interestC.made less effortD.had less passion3.In the author’s eye, Coach Brian is ________.A.professional and seriousB.hardworking and honestC.skilled and cruelD.strict and helpful考点:人物/故事答案:1—3 BCD试题解析:1.细节理解根据文章中地三段的内容,尤其是He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom,可知B选项与之相一致,故选B。

One of the best is laid on by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam;its tour allows visitors to view its Vermeers and Rembrandts, including the magnicent "Night Watch”, far more closely than would normally he possible. Another standout offering is from the Museu de Arte de SPaulo, which has an even broader collection. With the frequency of space launches dramatically increasing in recent years, the potential for a disastrous collision above Earth is continually growing. Now, Japanese orbital clean-up company Astroscale is testing a potential solution. The firm's End-of-Life Services by Astroscale demonstration mission is scheduled to lift off on 20 March aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket. It consists of two spacecraft: a smal “client” satellite and a larger “servicer” satellite, or “chaser”. The smaller satellite is equipped with a magnetic (磁力的) plate which allows the chaser todock withit. The two stacked spacecraft will perform three tests once in orbit, each of which will involve the servicer satellite releasing and then recapturing the client satellite. The first test will be the simplest, with the client satellite drifting a short distance away and then being recaptured. In the second test, the servicer satellite will set the client satellite tumbling before catching up with it and matching its motion to grab it.Finally, if those two tests go well, the chaser will live up to its name by letting the client satellite float a few hundred metres away before finding it and attaching to it. All of these tests will be performed autonomously, with little to no human input once they are set in motion.“These kinds of demonstrations have never been done before in space - they are very different to, say, an astronaut controlling a robotic arm on the International Space Station,” says Jason Forshaw at AstroscaleUK.“This is more of an autonomous mission.” At the end of the tests, both spacecraft will burn up in Earth's atmosphere. If companies wanted to use this capability, they would have to attach a magnetic plate to their satellites so they could be captured later. Because of the growing space garbage problem, many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites once they run out of fuel or fail, so this could be a fairly simple likely plan, Forshaw says. Right now, each chaser can only nab one satellite, but Astroscale is working on a version that could drag three or four out of orbit at once.8. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "dock with" in Paragraph 2?A. Deal with.B. Keep up with.C. Join together.D. Crash.9. Why many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites?A. Because of the growing space waste problem.B. Because the frequency of space launches are dramatically increasing.C. Because they can earn large profits from it.D. Because Astroscale has found a new method of capturing the space garbage.10. What will Astroscale do to solve the space junk problem?A. An astronaut controls a robotic arm on the International Space to capture the “client” satellite.B. Through a magnetic plate remotely controlled by humans on the ground to catch the “client” satellite.C. Finding the "client "satellite and attaching to it with a magnetic plate automatically.D. Tumbling to match the motion of “client satellite the drag three or four satellites out of its orbit into atmosphere.11. What can we infer from the passage?A. People will bum the space junk up in Earth's atmosphere in the future.B. Japan andRussiawill conduct space debris cleanup experiment together.C. These kinds of demonstrations have never been done before.D. The demonstration mission will be divided into three phases.DRock and pop hitmaker Jim Steinman, who wrote and composed music for Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Celine Dion, and more, died Monday in Danbury, Connecticut. That same year, the Public Theater staged his musicalMore Than You Deserve. One of the actors who auditioned forMore Than You Deservewas Meat Loaf, and he and Steinman soon struck up a close personal and professional relationship. The two began working on Meat Loaf's solo album,Bat Out of Hell, in the early 70s, but it wouldn't be released until 1977. It wasn't until about one year later — after Meat Loaf performed onSaturday Night Live— that the album became a hit.“There is no other songwriter ever like him,” Meat Loaf said. “I can never repay him. He has been such an influence, in fact, the biggest influence on my life, and I learned so much from him that there would be no way I could ever repay Mr. Jim Steinman.”12. AHow can we reduce the risk? There are four general approaches to dealing with volcanic dangers. We can try to keep the danger from occurring - often an impossible task. We can try to change its path or reduce its impact on existing development. We can take steps to protect future development. We can also do our best to have disaster response plans in place before they are needed.Removing the ThreatClearly, there is no way to stop an eruption. We can, however, attempt to reduce the eruption’s effectsby strengthening structures, for example, building protective works such as walls to make lava(熔岩) flow away from developed areas. Such efforts can be and have been successful, but are of limited use in a large-scale eruption.Planning for the FutureProtecting future development from volcanic dangers is a simple task. Before building houses, we should judge the risk. If the risk seems too great, a safer location should be found. This type of planning is very effective, but all too often, people are drawn to the lush(葱郁的),rolling land of a quiet volcano. Disaster PreparednessWhen a volcano comes to life, a few weeks may not be enough time to avoid a tragedy. Planning is the key to saving lives. Well before the warning signs occur, people must be educated about volcanic dangers. Escape plans must be in place. Communication between scientists, officials, the media, and the general public should be practiced. Emergency measures must be thought out and agreed upon.If you doubt the importance of these efforts, take another look at past volcanic tragedies, such as the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz. Communication failures left the town of Armero unprepared for escape. Whena deadly mudflow came down the slope(斜坡), 21,000 people--90 percent of the town’s people--died.21. The passage is intended for ________.A. the general publicB. architectsC. adventurersD. geographers22. When building houses, people tend to ________.A. judge volcanic dangers carefullyB. take volcanic dangers seriouslyC. live near a quiet volcanoD. find a safer place far away from a volcano23. The writer mentioned Nevado del Ruiz to prove ________.A. The failure to keep volcanic dangers from happeningB. The importance of preparing for a volcanic eruptionC. The bravery of the people in Armero TownD. The uncertainty of volcano’s damageBWhen someone is happy, can you smell it?You can usually tell when someone is happy based on seeing them smile, hearing them laugh or perhaps from receiving a big hug. But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell, reports .For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period. Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, apparently because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling—though it's unclear why only men were chosen to produce the scents.Researchers found that the behavior of the women after smelling the scents—particularly their facial expressions—indicated a relationship between the emotional states of the men who produced the sweat and the women who sniffed them.“Human sweat prod uced when a person is happy brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell,” said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey. This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.Researchers have yet to isolate(分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies(香味疗法)could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us.24. What is the main finding of the new research?A. Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.B. Negative emotions have a smell.C. Men produce more sweats.D. Women have a better sense of smell.25. The underlined part “abstain from” in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.A. continueB. practiceC. avoidD. try26. What is the application value of the new research?A. Perfumes could help people understand each other.B. Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.C. Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.D. Some smells could be developed to better our mood.27. We can learn from the last paragraph that .A. happiness comes from a scent of sweatB. social surroundings can influence our emotionsC. people need more emotional communicationD. positive energy can deepen understandingCNew Orleans, Louisiana, was established as part of the French Empire in 1718.Its location on the east bank of the Mississippi River gave it control of the American hinerland and it became strategically important to many nations. It was transferred from France to Spain, returned to France, and finally sold by Napoleon to the United States in 1803. The city was the site of a famous battle fought in 1815 between the British, who hoped to control it, and the Americans under General Andrew Jackson. The riverbed of the Mississippi is constantly silting(淤积)and the river is now actually higher than the city. Levees hold back the river and giant pumps are used to move water from the city into the river.Although New Orleans has been a part of the United States for almost two centuries, its population takes great pride in its French heritage. Louisiana still retains parts of the Code Napoleon which, for manyyears, was its only law.New Orleans is carefree city and it boasts its hot, spicy Creole seafood and its native Dixieland Jazz. The Jackson Square neighborhood maintains its French colonial homes and in other sections are pre-Civil War mansions. Visitors are surprised to find that behind this interesting surface of yesteryear is a busy industrial and port city. Grain and coal come from the Midwest and foreign goods are unloaded here. A refusal to engage in trade and commerceD. A praising of Dixieland Jazz.31. Tourists visiting New Orleans are surprised to encounter _____.A. Creole foodB. Dixieland jazzC. a busy cityD. authentic colonial homesDWhen it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they're done. These days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder morale(士气)and creativity.Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 am to 10 a.m., research from 10 a.m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning. What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities—from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga—by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under “clock time” vs "task time." They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in the business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies. This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It'll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.32. What does the author think of time displayed everywhere?A. It makes everybody time-conscious.B. It is a convenience for work and life.C. It may have a negative effect on creative work.D. It clearly indicates the fast pace of modern life.33. What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments about clock-timers?A. They seize opportunities as they come up.B. They always get their work done in time.C. They have more control over their lives.D. They tend to be more productive.34. What do the researchers say about today's business culture?A. It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.B. It does not attach enough importance to task-based practice.C. It places more emphasis on work efficiency than on workers' lives.D. It aims to bring employees’ potential and creativity into full play.35. What do the researchers suggest?A. Task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work.B. It is important to keep a balance between work and life.C. Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.D. A scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.How do actors and actresses memorize hundreds of lines? Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.36For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals(彩排) encourage this by running through the lines or having a "read through". By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.Listen to your cast members.Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. 37 This will help the actor learn his lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbed.38Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play’s dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene. Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. 39 Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members, and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.Think positively and don’t panic. Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don’t freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again. 40A. Record your lines.B. Practice makes perfect.C. Read lines loud and repeat them.D. Read lines loud and remember them in a short time.E. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.F. Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.G. Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times.第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
