Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many Old World cities have very narrow, winding streets. In these cities a small car is more practical and easier to handle than a large one. Some Americans like powerful engines in their cars. They enjoy having roomy cars that are comfortable for large families and long trips. 3 Other Americans, however, have learned to like the small, nimble cars. Many visitors to Europe during and after World War I discovered that small cars were fun to drive and easy to park in small spaces. They were delighted to learn how far small cars could go on a few gallons of gasoline.4 In 1957, for the first time, the United States imported more cars than it exported. The best selleramong these imported cars was a cool-looking but small car from Germany. Americans immediately gave it another name “the bug”.5 There are big cars for people who want large room, comfort, and power. And there are small cars, mostly imported but some American-made, for people who want easy parking and economical operation.A. The price of gasoline has much to do with this.B. Price plays a very key role in choice of cars.C. Many Americans prefer large cars.D. Small cars became popular in America.E. In the 1950s many Americans began buying European cars.F. Today, American car buyers have a wide choice.G. Playing Chinese checkers really needs skill.B. In the 1990s, a strategy called WIN-WIN became widespread in the western world.C. It was important for me after I knew its meaning.D. 补全短文11. LeukemiaLeukemia is the most common type of cancer kids get, but it is still very rare. Leukemia involves the blood and blood-forming organs, such as the bone marrow. (1)A kid with leukemia produces lots of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow. Usually, white blood cells fight infection, but the white blood cells in a person with leukemia don’t work the way they’re supposed to. (2)The abnormal white blood cells multiply out of control, filling the bone marrow and making it hard for enough normal, infection-fighting white blood cells to form. Other blood cells—such as red blood cells (that carry oxygen in the blood to the body’s tissues)and platelets (that allow blood to clot)—are also crowded out by the white blood cells of leukemia. These cancer cells may also move to other parts of the body, including the bloodstream, where they continue to multiply and build up.Although leukemia can make kids sick, most of the time it is treatable, and kids get better. Almost all leukemia patients are treated with chemotherapy, which means using anti-cancer drugs. (3)Chemotherapy quickly goes to work, traveling through the blood to the bone marrow. There, the drugs can attack the cancer cells. After several weeks of chemotherapy, many kids begin to feel better. Some children with leukemia will also have radiation therapy, too. (4)If the cancer isn’t getting better from usual amounts of chemotherapy and radiation, then a kid with leukemia Will probably need more treatment—with higher doses of chemotherapy and radiation to finally kill the cancer cells. But this heavy-duty treatment will also harm the normal cells in the kid’s bone marrow too, and the bone marrow will no longer be able to produce normal blood ceils. So, doctors will then give a kid—or anyone else with bone marrow that is no longer working—normal bone marrow tissue from someone else who is healthy. (5)练习:A. The chemotherapy drugs are given through a catheter, a narrow tube that is inserted into a blood vessel, sometimes in the kid’s upper chest.B. Early symptoms of leukemia are often overlooked, since they may resemble symptoms of the flu or other common diseases.C. This is a special procedure called a bone marrow transplant, and it helps the patient make new blood cells so they can recover from the leukemia.D. Bone marrow is the innermost part of some bones where blood ceils are first made.E. They don’t protect the person from infections very well.F. Radiation therapy uses invisible high-energy waves (similar to X-rays)to kill cancerous cells.练习答案:1.D 2.E 3.A 4.F 5.C12.More Efforts Urged to Empower Women at AIDSConference1Prevention is a central issue being discussed at the sixteenth International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada. But glucose can’t beused by the body on its own—it needs a hormone called insulin to bring itinto the cells of the body. Most people get the insulin they need from the pancreas, a large organnear the stomach. The pancreas makes insulin; insulin brings glucose intothe cells; and the body gets the energy it needs. When a person hasinsulin-dependent diabetes, it’s because the pancreas is not making insulin. So someone could be eating lost of food and getting all the glucose he needs, but without insulin, there is no way for the body to use the glucose forenergy. _____(2)_____You may have heard older people talk about having diabetes, maybepeople of your grandparents’ age. Usually, this is a different kind of diabetescalled non-insulin-dependent diabetes. It can also be called Type 2 diabetes,or adult-onset diabetes.__________(3)_____When a kid diagnosed with juvenile (insulin-dependent) diabetes, hewill have that type of diabetes for his whole life. It won’t ever change tonon-insulin-dependent diabetes when he gets older.Scientists now think that a person who has juvenile diabetes was bornwith a certain gene or genes that made the person more likely to get theillness. _____(4)_____ Many scientists believe that along with havingcertain gees, something else outside the person’s body, like a viral infection,is necessary to set the diabetes in motion by affecting the cells in thepancreas that make insulin. But the person must have the gene (or genes) for diabetes to start outwith—this means you can’t get diabetes just from catching a flu, virus, orcold. And this type of diabetes isn’t caused by eating too many sugary foods, eight. Diabetes can take a long time to develop in a person’s body—sometimes months or year. Another important thing to remember is thatdiabetes is not contagious. _____(5)_____练习:A Genes are something that you inherit form your parents, and they are inyour body even before you’re born.B This sugar-fuel is called glucose.C It may be possible to beat insulin resistance through lifestyle changes.D You can’t catch diabetes from people who have it, no mater how closeyou sit to them or if you kiss them.E The glucose can’t get into the cells of the body without insulin.F When a person has this kind of diabetes, the pancreas usually can stillmake insulin, but the person’s body n eeds more than the pancreas can make.练习答案:1.B 2.E 3.F 4.A 5.D14 A Memory Drug? (A级)IT’S DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE MANY THINGS that people wouldwelcome more than a memory-enhancing drug. ____1____ Furthermore, such a drug could help people remember past experiences more clearly andhelp us acquire new information more easily for school and at work. Asscientists learn more about memory, we are closing in on this tantalizinggoal.1Some of the most exciting evidence comes from research that has builton earlier findings linking LTP2and memory to identify a gene thatimproves memory in mice. ____2____ Mice bred to have extra copies ofthis gene showed more activity in their NMDA receptors, more LTP,andimproved performance on several different memory tasks —learning aspatial layout3, recognizing familiar objects, and recalling a fear-inducingshock.If these basic insights about genes, LTP, and the synaptic basis ofmemory can be translated to people — and that remains to be seen — theycould pave the way for memory-enhancing treatments. ____3____ Asexciting as this may sound, it also raises troubling issues. Consider thepotential educational implications of memory-enhancing drugs. If memoryenhancers were available, children who used them might be able to acquireand retain extraordinary amounts of information, allowing them to progressfar more rapidly in school than they could otherwise. How well could thebrain handle such an onslaught of information? What happens to childrenwho don’t have access to the latest memory enhancers? Are they left behindin school — and as a result handicapped later in life?____4____ Imagine that you are applying for a job that requires a goodmemory, such as a manager at a technology company or a sales positionthat requires remembering customers’ names as well as the attributes ofdifferent products and services. Would you take a memory-enhancing drugto increase your chances of landing the position? Would people who feltuncomfortable taking such a drug find themselves cut out of lucrative careeropportunities?Memory drugs might also help take the sting out of disturbingmemories that we wish we could forget but can’t.4The 2004 hit movieEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind told the story of a young manseeking just such freedom from the painful memories of a romanticbreakup. As you will see in the section on persistence later in the chapter, emotionally arousing events often create intrusive memories, andresearchers have already muted emotional memories with drugs that blockthe action of key hormones. Should emergency workers who must confronthorrifying accident scenes that can burden them with persisting memoriesbe provided with such drugs? Should such drugs be given to rape victimswho can’t forget the trauma? Memory drugs might provide some relief tosuch individuals. But could they also interfere with an individual’s ability toassimilate and come to terms with a difficult experience?5 ____5____练习:A Like steroids for bulking up the muscles, these drugs would bulk upmemory.B A memory enhancer could help eliminate forgetting associated withaging and disease.C What are the potential implications of memory-enhancing drugs for theworkplace?D We may find ourselves struggling with these kinds of questions in thenot-too-distant future.E There is a pill that you could take every day to allow you to remembereverything.F The gene makes a protein that assists the NMDA2 receptor, whichplays an important role in long-term memory by helping to initiate LTP.答案与题解:1.B 2.F 3.A 4.C 5.D15. But if a cut appears to be pumping blood out with some force, this may be a sign of arterial (动脉的)bleeding.__【小题4】_Finally, always keep this in mind: even a cut that does not require medical attention must be kept clean to prevent infection.Small cuts should be cleaned gently with clean water._【小题5】Then cover it with a clean, dry bandage.A.How a wound bleeds can be a sign of how serious it is.B.That requires a specialist to either cut down the bone or reattach the fingertip.C.This kind of injury should be treated by a medical professional as soon as possibleD.The first signs of this disease include difficulty opening the mouth.E.Use a washcloth to clean the area if the wound is dirty.F.With a cut finger, holding the hand above the heart can reduce the loss of blood.G The length is usually not as important as the depth.4. The crowd ofdealers, collectors, bargain-hunters and plain sale-goers walked about examining this and that and generally having a last look round before the excitement of the sale. Every piece was numbered and listed, and everyone had a copy of the list. The sale was to take place in the largest room, the sitting room, which had been prepared. A few people were already waiting there. The room was half full of chairs. These carried the highest numbers, so that they could be put to ordinary use till near the end. In front of the fireplace stood the salesman's desk, a box-like piece of furniture with four steps. At work, the salesman stood a meter above everyone. He was trained to notice the slightest movement of a hand, an eye, or even an eyebrow, any of which might signal a bid. Beside the desk were a table and two chairs for the clerk and the cashier. Many of the sale goods were already here, some from the bedrooms looking out of place.Almost in the middle stood a big kitchen table covered by a blanket. The salesman came in and climbed on to his stand. His assistants followed him in and took their places.―Ladies and gentlemen, ‖the salesman said, ―I have been informed to tell you that everything must be sold this afternoon. No price is too low or too high for anything, but a price I must have for everything. We are now ready to begin, and we do so with Lot Number One …‖At this point two strong-looking men lifted on to the central table a large wooden chest. It seemed too big for a modern house.―Lot Number One is an oak chest. Now what am I bid for this fine old chest? Do I hear £20? No? £10 then. Do I hear £10? Come along, ladies and gentlemen, this chest is solid oak. The wood alone is worth £40, so make me an offer for Lot Number One, just to get us started. ‖His eyes swung round the room.―One pound, ‖a woman's voice called.―One pound I'm bid, ‖said the salesman eagerly, ―for this splendid chest. Any advance on £1 now? One pound I'm bid. Do I hear two? No? Going at one pound then. No advance on £1? Going at £1. One pound. ‖He brought his wooden hammer down sharply on to his desk. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization. Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlanticis rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.―Storm at Sea‖, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind‘s earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic. When the wind is from the westAll the waves that cannot restTo the east must thunder onWhere the bright tree of the sunIs rooted in the ocean‘s breast. As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull. It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling. It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath—perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿) nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic (共生的) existences, too: unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.1. Kincaid looked at his watch: eight-seventeen. The truck started on the second try, and he backed out, shifted gears, and moved slowly down the alley under hazy sun. Through the streets of Bellingham he went, heading south on Washington 11, running along the coast of Puget Sound for a few miles, then following the highway as it swung east a little before meeting U.S Route 20. Turning into the sun, he began the long, winding drive through the Cascades. He liked this country and felt impressed, stopping now and then to make notes about interesting possibilities for future expeditions or to shoot what he called ―memory snapshots.‖ The purpose of these causal photographs was to remind him of places he might want to visit again and approach more seriously. In later afternoon he turned north at Spokane, picking up U.S Route 2, which would take him halfway across the northern United States to Duluth, Minnesota. He wished for the thousandth time in his life that he had a dog, a golden retriever, maybe, for travels like this and to keep him company at home. But he was frequently away; overseas much of the time and it would not be fair to the animal. Still, he thought about it anyway. In a few years he would be getting too old for the hard fieldwork. ―I must get a dog then.‖ He said to himself. Drives like this always put him into a sentimental mood. The dog was part of it. Robert Kincaid was alone as it‘s possible to be – an only child, parents both dead, distant relatives who had lost track of him and he of them, no close friends. He thought about Marian. She had left him nine years ago after five years of marriage. He was fifty–two now, that would make her just under forty. Marian had dreams of becoming a musician, a folksinger. It’s reported that the Great Fire attacked London in the 17th century. The fire started in the very early hours of the day. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. 36
On Sunday morning the fire started in the house of the King’s baker in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof.37 Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.
By eight o’clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. 38 The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Pa ul’s and the Guildhall among them.
People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment.
39 The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.
After the fire, the city was expected to be rebuilt with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. 40 But more than fifty churches were also rebuilt, among them new St Paul’s.
Although great pain and loss was caused by the fire, after it,London was rebuilt as a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.
A.Tuesday was the worst day, for more buildings were caught in the fire.
B.In fact, the streets were still narrow after totally rebuilt.
C.At last, the streets became much wider.
D.The family were able to survive the fire after all.
E.The homeless had to wander in the streets for no shelter to stay.
F.A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door.
G.One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.。
