“哼！休息够了吧？干活去！”命令下，凡卡咬咬牙，站起来拿起拖把向老板房间里去……
“啪——”凡卡正在整理房间时，老板突然中上来打他一巴掌，凡卡还没明白怎么回事时，老板就破口大骂：“你这小兔崽子！没进过允许乱动东西！看看！看看！放在柜台上的墨水怎么回事？你用了是不是？！”凡卡惊恐的看着老板凶神恶煞的脸，颤抖的说：“我……我只是好奇的动了动……拧开盖子又盖回去了……其他真……真的没动过……”话还没说完，老板就上来毒打他一顿，先是一巴掌，后是揪耳朵，然后又是踢他的脚……凡卡被打的脸上青一块紫一块的。
完后，老板叫他照顾孩子，凡卡抽泣着，想：该死的东西！恶毒的东西！我的信已经寄出去了，我也马上就能回去，爷爷一定会来接我的，一定！
凡卡盼啊盼，希望爷爷能来接他，可爷爷就是没来，凡卡渐渐失望了。
两个星期后，老板重重地把信扔到正在抹地的凡卡面前：“小子，我就知道你用了墨水写了信！哼！乡下捎来的口信说你爷爷早就死了！你就别指望回去了！”凡卡听了脸色苍白，他惊呆了：不！爷爷不会就这么丢下我的！这不是真的……
过了几天，凡卡等老板一家和店里的伙计去做礼拜时，急忙披上旧棉袄，赤着脚。
不顾一切的奔向去自己乡下的路——他要去找爷爷！凡卡拼命地跑，生怕被老板抓回去。
但他还是因为太饿了，晕倒在路上…。
凡卡缓缓睁开眼睛，发现自己在一间陌生的小木屋里，正躺在一张床上。
这是，一位妇女走进来，说：“孩子，你醒了？”“这里是？”凡卡说。
妇女笑着说：“这里是我家，我在放羊时见你倒在路旁上，就抱你回来了。
”凡卡眼睛湿润了，他没有说话。
那妇女又问：“孩子，你怎么会倒在地上？你的爸爸妈妈呢？他们不管你吗？”凡卡听后哭了，述说了他的身世际遇。
妇女听后拿出手绢擦擦眼角的泪水，说：“可怜的孩子，你现在无依无靠。
但我可以收养你，你留
在我这儿吧。
”凡卡听了“哇”的一声，不只是哭是笑：“谢……谢谢！您真是一位好心人！”
凡卡留了下来。
并改了名，叫迩斯弗·玛卡里奇
后来凡卡知道这位妇女叫艾尔米•莉亚，丈夫因病去世，她没有孩子，一直一个人生活。
莉亚很喜欢凡卡，照顾他像亲生儿子一样，凡卡也亲切的叫莉亚为“妈妈”。
他们在一起生活，非常快乐。
凡卡知道她爷爷真的死了之后，痛哭了一整天，后来在小木屋附近建了一个坟。
一天凡卡和莉亚在爷爷的坟面前，把一束花放在那里。
凡卡说：“爷爷！这是我亲手采摘的花，好看吗？您在天堂过得好吗？孙子我想您了。
我有莉亚妈妈照顾我，生活的很好……爷爷……”凡卡笑着看了看坟上的“康司坦丁•玛卡里奇”的字，又望了望蓝天，不知是高兴还是哀伤。
现在世上已经没有叫“凡卡”的孩子了，也没有在鞋匠那痛苦的折磨后干活的那个小孩了；只有那个叫迩斯弗的小伙子，在一个小村里幸福的生活。
