The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.Requirements for completion:•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings•Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings•At least three pair-teacher meetings•One five-minute final videoSign up!The sign-up and registration process is as follows:•Students sign up and indicate the languages they can share and languages they are interested in learning.•Based on the information entered by each student, potential pairs are identified.•Proficiency (熟练) levels are confirmed through coursework or placement tests.•Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme.Reminders:Signing up for the programme does not automatically mean that you will be able to register and participate. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. Since there are many factors involved in the pairing process, not all students who sign up will be matched with a partner and be able to register for the programme.1.In the programme, students will _________.A.chair daily meetings B.evaluate the exchangeC.meet teachers each week D.practise their language skills2.To complete the programme, students are required to _________.A.development tests B.participate in pair meetingsC.welcome new students D.work on weekly videos3.What do students need to do during the registration?A.Indicate their languages of interest.B.Select their own coursework.C.Make individual contact.D.Choose their partners. When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns. In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art O-level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless. But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice. One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so authoritative that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations butkeep going.Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.4.How did the author feel about the result of the art exam?A.Scared.B.Worried.C.Discouraged.D.Wronged.5.In her 30s, the author _________.A.avoided oil painting practice B.sought for a painting careerC.fancied abstract painting D.exhibited child paintings6.Which word would best describe the author’s dream?A.Confusing.B.Empowering.C.Disturbing.D.Entertaining.7.What can we learn from this passage?A.Actions speak louder than words.B.Hard work is the mother of success.C.Dreams are the reflections of realities.D.Creative activities involve being confident.Since the last ice age, humans have cleared nearly half of the earth’s forests and grasslands for agriculture. With the world population expanding, there’s ever-increasing pressure on farmland to produce not only more food but also clean energy. In places such as Yakima County, Washington, it’s created competition for space as land-hungry solar panels (板) consume available fields. Last month, the state approved plans to cover 1,700 acres of agricultural land with solar panels, fueling concerns over the long-term impacts of losing cropland.A recent study from the University of California, however, shows how farmers may soon harvest crops and energy together. One researcher, Majdi Abou Najm, explains that visible light spectrum (光谱) can be separated into blue and red light waves, and their photons (光子) have different properties. Blue ones have higher energy than red ones. While that gives blue light what is needed to generate power, it also results in higher temperatures. “From a plant angle, red photons are the efficient ones,” says Abou Najm. “They don’t make the plant feel hot.”A goal of the study is to create a new generation of solar panels. He sees potential in the organic solar cells, which come from carbon-based materials. Thin and transparent, the cells areapplied like a film onto various surfaces. This new technology could be used to develop special solar panels that block blue light to generate power, while passing the red light on to crops planted directly below. These panels could also provide shade for heat-sensitive fruits during the hottest part of the day.By 2050, we’ll have two billion more people, and we’ll need more food and more energy. By maximizing the solar spectrum, “we’re making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource,” says Abou Najm. “If a technology kicks in that can develop these panels, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be.”8.What problem does the first paragraph focus on?A.Losing cropland to solar panels.B.Distribution of the world population.C.Reduction in forests and grasslands.D.Competing for land between farmers.9.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Generation of solar power.B.Hot weather increasing efficiency.C.Blue photons having higher energy.D.Separation of visible light spectrum.10.What do we know about the organic solar cells?A.They make fruits heat-sensitive.B.They can cool down in hot days,C.They allow red light to pass through.D.They can store carbon-based materials.11.What does Abou Najm think of the future of the new solar panels?A.Limited.B.Promising.C.Uncertain.D.Challenging.“Anxiety.” The very word invites discomfort. Its effects—shortness of breath, pounding heart, muscle tension—are outright upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend to miss out on many valuable opportunities presented by this human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is notdeadly, nor is it a disease. Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us.We all know working out at the gym is hard. By nature, a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do. The sweet spot of exercise is always a somewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension. For example, one effective treatment for fear is exposure therapy (疗法), which involves gradually encountering things that make one anxious, reducing fear over time.Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., “I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support”), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love. From time to time, we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up, our resources break down, and we feel uncomfortably anxious—what we’re experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales (天平) going out of balance. Focusing on work and pretending everything is OK only leads to disastrous results. Medical treatment for stress may function for a while, but it tends to make things worse in the long run. The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales.12.What does the author say about anxiety?A.It is an invitation to diseases.B.It indicates stable mental health.C.It costs us many valuable chances.D.It is a natural emotional expression.13.Why does the author mention “good workout” in paragraph 2?A.To prove how exercise influences emotions.B.To suggest an effective way to challenge limits.C.To explain how anxiety builds emotional strength.D.To show a positive connection between mind and body.14.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The key to closeness is partners’ support.B.Sharing anxieties improves relationships.C.Humans are defined by their social nature.D.Expressing feelings keeps us off anxieties.15.According to the last paragraph, how can we deal with stress?A.Devote more energy to our work.B.Increase resources available to us.C.Seek professional medical treatment.D.Master advanced mathematical skills.Once a year in a small mountain village, the Mande people gather to hear the folk stories of their traditions. The man playing an instrument called Sosso-Bala while singing is the storyteller. He holds all the folk knowledge of the Mande people. Most of us don’t have a musical instrument that ties us together, but we have someone in our lives who’s the keeper of our folk knowledge. Often it’s a grandmother, who keeps all our stories of wisdom ready to tell upon request. 16 .What’s the best way to get a baby to sleep? Where do I come from? What’s my moral compass? The stories provide an answer, and it’s useful to speak with someone who knows how things are done.17 Researchers have documented folk knowledge in other species whales returning to parts of the sea that they’d abandoned a generation before; monkeys that communicate hunting skills to their offspring (后代). Folk knowledge is not only culture, it’s also survival. 18 Traditionally, we share it in small units—families sharing around a dinner table. 19 Look at any social median, and you’ll see folk knowledge at work and at play. It’s exploded as we’re trained to look for information online, rather than from within. In this case, chances are that our questions can be answered with misinformation. But we don’t gather once a year to reality check our “folk stories” as the Mande people do; nor do we center our folk traditions around a musical instrument. The internet has no reality except its own and, left unchecked, its wisdom has no rhythm(节奏). 20A.It’s just chaos.B.This is why we do it.C.Human wisdom has been passed down through generations.D.The stories can be useful for dealing with all sorts of doubts.E.Nowadays, folk knowledge has expanded to digital networks.F.Now the internet has made valuable folk wisdom at your fingertips.G.Recently, we discovered that this very human practice isn’t limited to humans.二、完形填空Katherine would never forget the day when her daughter brought a plate from kindergarten, with a drawing of mouse-like creatures on it.“Emma, what are these little characters?
