AOne Sunday, I took my daughter to the seaside. On arriving at the beach, I saw JoJo, a wealthy man in hotel business. We sat down to chat in an open air cafe while I watched my daughter enjoy herself on the swings (秋千) in front of us.Suddenly, our conversation was interrupted by a stranger, who politely asked permission to speak to me privately. People often want to tell me something about my TV show.We stood a bit away from my table. He said, “I’m James, the father of a 7-year-old girl who’s very sick. The doctors said that if she was treated in the UK, she would probably survive. But I’m poor, so can you help me, pl ease?”I stared into the man’s eyes full of tears and asked how I could help. After I went back, JoJo asked me, “What’s wrong?” I told him about it and he was very sorry for that family. All day I thought about James’s family. I even thought about making a special TV show to raise money for the sick child. On Monday morning, JoJo walked into my office. Actually, JoJo was very busy, and I never imagined he would have the time to come and see me.“Please, call the man and tell him I’ll pay all the expenses for the girl’s treatment,”JoJo said with a cheque in his hand.“I’ve been married for 35 years; I wasn’t lucky enough to have a child. Sometimes I feel lonely. I want to help this child.”I picked up the phone to call James. Now James’s daughter is well and JoJo sometimes goes to visit her. I’m so happy that there are so good people on this earth.1. According to the passage, the writer _____ .A. often go to the beach with his daughterB. is often troubled by his audienceC. was unwilling to help JamesD. met JoJo at the beach by accident2. James turned to the writer for help probably because he _____.A. guessed the writer was rich enough to help himB. wanted the writer to ask JoJo for helpC. thought the writer could help him through TVD. knew the writer was warm-hearted3. Why did JoJo make up his mind to help James? _____.A. To show his love for a child.B. To remove his loneliness by doing something.C. To show his warm heart and kindness.D. To build a relationship with Jame’s family.BSome time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a lot of antique (古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair. The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth - so I decided that my approach must be wrong. I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,”he said. “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that. It’s nothing.” Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done. “ “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “ You must be crazy,” he said. Then, su ddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chairfor me?’” “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But l’ll mend this for you. Shall we say for five pounds?”He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.4. We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer_____.A. was rather impoliteB. asked the shopkeeper to repair his chairC. asked the shopkeeper to buy his chairD. was warmly received5. The underlined word “approach” in the second paragraph means_____.A. plan for dealing with thingsB. decision to sell tingsC. way of doing thingsD. idea of repairing things6. The expression “the penny dropped” means the shopkeeper______.A. changed his mindB. accepted the offerC. saw the writer’s purposeD. decided to help the write r7. From the text, we can learn that the writer was_____.A. honestB. carefulC. funnyD. smartCFear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting andpumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed.Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said:“Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus, our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don’t see—and guide whether we see fear.”To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪)to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person’s feeling of fear.“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’to each ot her to change our feelings and reduce fear,”Dr Garfinkel said.“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who maybe suffering from serious stress disorder.”8. What is the finding of the study? ________.A. Fear is a result of one’s relaxed heartbeat.B. One’s heart affects how he feels fear.C. Fear has something to do with one’s health.D. One’s fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.9. The study was carried out by analyzing ________.A. volunteers’ heartbeats when they saw terrible picturesB. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditionsC. volunteers’ reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scansD. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication10. Which of the following is closest in meaning to“mechanism”in Paragraph 6?A. orderB. treatmentC. machineD. system11. This study may contribute to ________.A. treating anxiety and stress betterB. explaining the cycle of fear and anxietyC. finding the key to the heart-brain communicationD. understanding different fears in our hearts and headsDThe evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on well with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is happier than it has ever been in the past.“We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team.“They’re expected to be rebellious(叛逆的)and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”So it seems that these parents are much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends.“My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel LaSalle.“I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. When they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Cromer, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call talk or discussion. For example, when I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not based on real facts. A researcher explains,“Teenagers were thought to be different from others in a part of time in our social history. But to our surprise, they say they are getting on well with their parents. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled.”【高中生寒假专题】12. The study shows that teenagers don’t want to ______________________.A. share family dutiesB. cause trouble in their familiesC. go boating with their familyD. make family decisions13. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents ___________________.A. go to clubs more often with their childrenB. are much stricter with their childrenC. care less about their children’s lifeD. give their children more freedom14. According to the writer, teenage rebellion ____________________.A. may be a wrong opinionB. is common at presentC. always happened in the 1960sD. was caused by changes in families15. Which title best gives the main idea of the passage?A. Discussion in familyB. Teenage education in familyC. Teenage trouble in familyD. Harmony in family根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的选项。

Maybe the following advice can help you. First of all, believe in yourself. Your greatest problem is that you lack self-confidence. The first thing you must do is to smile at your classmates. One smile speaks louder about your wish to make friends than any words. Your smile will show that you are friendly to them. Next, try talking with a student who is as shy as yourself or who shares the same interest as you. You can discuss your studies with a classmate, and you can also talk about your hobbies as well. If anyone is in trouble in life or study, you should be ready to help him or her. Once you have confidence, you can make as many friends as possible.Yours,Xxx寒假作业三参考答案Unit1徒步旅行肯定是激动人心的经历。

We received a series of school education as well as non-school education during the course of growing up. And we become physically and mentally mature at some time when we can start to live independently in society, which owes to learning and shows its irreplaceable significance. Some people, however, argue that it is not necessary for us to continue learning after we start our career. Maybe this was true if time rolls back to hundreds of years ago when the accumulation of knowledge of human beings was at a low level. On the contrary, we would be stunned looking at the pace of our society’s development. Knowledge and information update themselves with periods which become shorter and shorter. It is not unimaginable anymore that the world changes a lot during the interval of closing and opening your eyes.We cannot propose a life without learning in such a fast-paced society, for we probably would become outdated if we stop learning after we graduate. It is only through the life-long learning that we can catch up with the changing society.Script for Listening ComprehensionPart I Listening Comprehension (20 %)Section ADirections:You will hear four conversations between two speakers. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute ortwo, we demand the needle—a shot of novocaine—that deadens the nerves around the tooth. Now it’s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the world. Without our nerves—and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves—we wouldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture is based on the human body being open to pain. But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.Questions 5 to 7 are based on the passage you have just heard.5. What is the passage mainly about?6. What is TRUE about the Indian fakir?7. What is the most important thing to handle painPassage TwoThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world ---- even the seasonal changes ---- as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and fearful powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area” and the “auditorium”. In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, orsupernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect ---- success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun ---- as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to these ties, tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds. Questions 8 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.8. Where did drama begin according to many theories?9. What is the route of drama’s evolution according to another theory10. Why is drama related to dances?Section CDirections: You are going to hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. Thenlisten again and fill in the blanks with what you have heard. When thepassage is read for the third time, check what you have written. Thenwrite your answer in the corresponding place on your Answer Sheet.Life undeniably has its ups and downs. One moment you are happy and the other you are already sad.
