subject,it was, perhaps, physical education. He was an excellent soccer player, yet not as good as his brother. This was Niels Bohr, the world-famous Nobel prize winning physicist.Born to a physiology(生理学) professor,Niels lived in a world of ideas and discussion from his very early childhood at home.He developed an interest in physics and mathematics from the early days of his education. With no laboratory available in school and college,he would perform experiments in his father’s laboratory. His first work on surface tension was done here, for which he won the Gold Medal in 1906 from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences.Early in his scientific career,Bohr made great contributions to the understanding of atomic(原子的) structure based on quantum mechanics(量子力学).Neils Bohr came up with the model of an atom which was able to explain all the properties(性质) of the atom.It is this atomic model that is accepted even today with only very slight improvements. This work won him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922.When the Nazis controlled Denmark, his life became difficult. He had to escape to Sweden in 1943 ina fishing boat;from there he fled to England.England opened up opportunities of working on the atom bomb(原子弹).After a few months he joined a British research team and went to Los Alamos in the United States where the team continued to work on the project.Niels was also deeply concerned with making people realize the destructive power of the atomic bomb.He published a letter to the United Nations in 1950 which asked them to help get rid of nuclear(核的) weapons in the world. This and his other activities won Bohr the first U.S.Atoms for Peace Award in 1957.He spent his remaining years showing people that nuclear energy must be used in a positive and productive way.1.Who probably helped Niels Bohr develop an interest in physics?A.His brother.B.His mother.C.His teacher.D.His father.2.Niels Bohr received the Nobel Prize mainly because of________.A.his physical educationB.his atomic modelC.his understanding of quantum mechanicsD.his work on surface tension3.Niels Bohr did his research work on the atom bomb in________.A.DenmarkB.AmericaC.EnglandD.Sweden4.From the last paragraph we can infer that________.A.the power of the atomic bomb will be used properlyB.Niels thought it wrong to develop nuclear weaponsC.nuclear energy has been used in quite a few waysD.Niels would like to go on with his research workBIn my living room, there is a plaque(匾) that advises me to “Bloom(开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy.I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s,when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville,Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program.Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County,Kentucky,Appalachian Mountain area.To get to her school from the town of Harlan,I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey,I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times.Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains,I found itdepressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom(忧郁) disappeared.Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom,I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects.Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner”(lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification,Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas.Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory,as if she had received her Ph.D.degree.After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom(传家宝),but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.5.“Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to________.A.a program directed by Alexander Fleming was born in Scotland in 1881. He left school when he was thirteen years old; for a few years he worked in a shopping company. When he was about twenty years old, an uncle died and left him some money. At his elder brother’s advice, he took an entrance examination for medical school. He passed brilliantly and joined St. Mary’s Hospital in London. There he met Sir Almroth Wright and that meeting changed the course of his life. When he graduated, he joined Wright’s laboratory staff instead of going into private practice as he had earlier intended.During the First World War, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was shocked by what he saw in France. Hundreds of wounded soldiers, with bacteria crawling in their wounds, were brought to his hospital. But there was little he could do for them as the antiseptics in use then were not effective for deep wounds. He was horrified by the suffering and the numerous deaths, but Fleming was a determined man full of courage and he vowed to discover something that would kill these bacteria and save lives. After the war he continued his research. For years he toiled on; then in September 1928 he made one of the greatest discoveries of all time. He had been growing colonies of bacteria in flat, open dishes. A few days later he saw that mould had settled in one of the dishes. However, he did not throw away the dish; instead he examined it and saw that no bacteria grew near the mould. “Had the mould killed the bacteria?” he asked himself.A chemical from the mould had done just that. Fleming later named this chemical penicillin. Thus one of the greatest achievements of man had taken place. But penicillin was not immediately used—years were to pass before that happened. More knowledge about the drug was gained and in 1941 many people were successfully treated. Before long penicillin was produced on a large scale, and during the Second World War it helped save thousands of wounded soldiers.1.
