长江雨课堂——高级英语写作-综合英语(1)作业习题2

Direction: Read the following passage and do the activities after it.The Hazards of Being an Only Child1 Many people who have grown up in multichild families think that being an only child is the best of all possible worlds. They point such benefits as the child’s annual new wardrobe and the lack of competition for parental love. But single-child status isn’t as good as people say it is. Instead of having everything they want, only children are sometimes denied certain basic needs.2 Only children lack companionship. An only child can have trouble making friends, since he or she isn’t used to being around other children. Often, the only child comes home to an empty house; both parents are working, and there are no brothers or sisters to pl ay with or to talk to about the day. At dinner, the single child can’t tell jokes, giggle, or throw food while the adults discuss boring adult subjects. An only child always has his or her own room but never has anyone to whisper to half the night when sle ep doesn’t come. Some only children thrive on this isolation and channel their energies into creative activities like swimming or drawing. Owing to this lack of companionship, an only child sometimes lacks the social ease and self confidence that come from being part of a close-knit group of contemporaries.3 Second, only children lack privacy. An only child is automatically the center of parental concern. There’s never any doubt about which child tried to sneak in after midnight on a weekday. And who will get the lecture the next morning. Also, whenever an only child gives in to a bad mood, runs into his or her room, and slams the door, the door will open thirty seconds later, revealing an anxious parent. Parents of only children sometimes don’t even understand the child’s need for privacy. For example, they may not understand why a teenager wants a lock on the door or a personal telephone. After all, the parents think, there are only the three of us, there’s no need for secrets.4 Most important, only children lack power. They get all the love, but if something goes wrong, they also get all the punishment. When a bottle of perfume is knocked tothe floor or the television is left on all night, there is no little sister or brother to blame it on. Moreover, an only child has no recourse when asking for a privilege of some kind, such as permission to stay out late or to take an overnight trip with friends. There are no other siblings to point to and say, “You let them do it. Why won’t you let me?” With no allies their own age, only children are always outnumbered, two to one. An only child hasn’t a chance of influencing any major family decisions, either.5 Being an only child isn’t as special as some people think. It’s no fun being without friends, without privacy, and without power in one’s own home. But the child who can triumph over these hardships grows up self-reliant and strong. Perhaps for this reason alone, the hazards are worth it.1.A3. Second, only children lack privacy. An only child is automatically the center of parental concern. 成人高等学历英语作业2-5(仅供参考)

the education of the common man had occupied his thoughts for decades. He believed ignorance (无知) to be the enemy of freedom, and he wanted to correct what he considered to be the weaknesses of educational institutions (机构) modeled on European settings. He imagined that an “academical village” around a tree-lined lawn would provide an ideal setting in which to pursue higher education. The center of such a village would be a Temple of Knowledge that would house the university library. When Virginia decided to set up a state university in 1818, the retired U.S. President finally was able to devote his talent, time, and energy to creating this new kind of educational institution. By the time he was finished with his design, Jefferson had invented an entirely new American setting for higher education: the college campus. In 1812, Jefferson chose to begin building his “academical village,” the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA, far away from the city center. He intended this spot to promote learning because it was natural and unspoiled, and far from anything that could distract or harm the students. The University consists of two rows of houses, five on each side, leading to a main building. This main building, the Rotunda, became the most important part of the University, because it contained the library. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church, Jefferson revolutionized American university architecture.Jefferson’s aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his daily business. This new approach to citizensip and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas. He attempted to create this environment by combining the professors’ houses and students’ classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students’ whole life, and given much thought and planning to设施).分)分)分)A.give everyone the information he needs for conducting his businessB.be one under which every citizen enjoys equal opportunityC.provide students with a natural and unspoiled setting for learning分)A.Intellectual exchange.B.Students’ learning.C.Both students’ and professors’ life.D.Professors’ teaching.分)分)分)分)分)分)A.Little did I knewB.Little did I know分)分)分)分)A.bring outB.let outC.leave outD.make out1. 高级英语写作unit two 作业讨论

Most everyday writing is casual. Tweets, Facebook updates, holiday cards, friendly emails —these have their own simple etiquette, and we don’t spend a lot of time thinking about them before we lick that stamp or hit send.Sometimes, though, the occasion calls for something more formal. Whether it’s a letter to your political representative about an important issue, a cover letter to a potential boss, or a business proposal letter, these require a bit more care if you’re going to be taken seriously. As a lawyer, I write many formal letters each week, and there is an art to doing it well. Here are a few points to keep in mind when you’re writing your own formal letter, whether it will go through the mail or via cyberspace.1. Understand your purpose. Why are you writing? What do you want the reader to do after reading your letter? Do you want to change her mind or convince him to take a specific action? Are you seeking forgiveness? Do you mean to complain about bad service or a faulty product? Are you tryin g to get hired? What’s the “ask”?Once you know this, you can — and should —cut everything out that doesn’t serve that purpose.2. Identify your audience.Knowing your audience helps you choose your language and target your ideas more precisely. I write differently in a letter to another lawyer than I do when the addressee is a non-lawyer executive or even an elderly “pro bono” client. In a letter to the editor, your real audience is the publication’s readers—who are they? (Keep in mind that most newspa pers are written at an 8th or 9th grade reading level.) Don’t use jargon that your reader won’t understand.3. Keep it short. Most of us endure a constant flood of written communications, and we have a limited amount of time to spend reading it. You therefore have a better chance of being read if you keep your letter to one page. A multi-page letter with long paragraphs and complex sentences looks overwhelming. The busy reader will be tempted to set it aside for when she has more time—and she might never get around to picking it up again. Use short paragraphs, short sentences, short words.4. Use simple language. It’s the writer’s job to be understood. Even if your audience is highly educated, you should avoid big words and long, complex sentences. Peopl e aren’t stupid; they’re busy. Make our job easier, and we’re more likely to give your letter the attention it deserves. Formalwriting does not require the use of big words. Don’t try to sound sophisticated; try to be clear. Use “ask” instead of “request.” Say “buy” instead of “purchase.” Instead of “enclosed herewith please find,” just say, “I’ve enclosed” or “Here is. . . .”5. Lead with the most important point. As journalists say, don’t bury your lead. Find a way to open with the idea or information that you most want your reader to focus or act on. The first paragraph might be the only one he reads, so don’t hide the “ask” in the last paragraph.6. Follow the rules. There are rules for formatting a business letter. You ignore them at your peril.7. Proofread. Then proofread again. No matter how grammatically gifted you are, errors and typos can creep in. When you think you’ve finished writing, read your piece slowly and attentively, watching for those typos. Don’t trust spellcheck. If possible, pr int a hard copy of your letter and read it—out loud—with a pen in hand, marking those typos, awkward sentences, confusing lines. If it’s really important, have somebody else read it and let you know if you’ve missed something.8. Let it cool before sending.Especially if you are writing to persuade or complain, you probably are motivated by some pretty strong feelings. Absolutely write your first draft in the white-hot heat of passion. Express your feelings. Get it all on paper. But then . . . before you print and sign, or hit send, walk away for awhile. Go do something else. Let that heat of passion cool. Then come back and re-read what you’ve written. Is it fair? Is it smart? Is it true? Is it kind? Would you regret having it read on television, in front of your boss and your grandmother? Make the changes that seem appropriate after your emotions have settled. Then, and only then, hit send. What have I missed? What is your stickiest communication challenge? Your questions and suggestions are invited.。
