AFestivals are a great way to experience a destination in a different way. Whether you are looking for a unique cultural difference or the experience of sheer joy, there is something here for everyone in this article.St. Patrick's DayDublin, Ireland & New York, the USA, March 17thIt has been a cultural and religious celebration held in memory of the death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland, since 1762. Sounds good?King's DayAmsterdam, Netherlands, April 27dhKing's Day may well be the best party in Holland and Amsterdam turns a very bright color of orange on April 27th. People celebrate King Willem-Alexander's birthday with music, street parties, flea markets, and fun fairs. The king himself travels through the country with his family.Just for LaughsMontreal, Canada, July 14th—30thFor comedy lovers there is no other festival in the world better than Montreal's Just for Laughs. Which of the four festivals mainly involves music and films?A. St. Patrick's Day.B. South by Southwest.C. King's Day.D. Just for Laughs.2. What do St. Patrick's Day and King's Day have in common?A. What can we learn about Just for Laughs?A. It lasts for a monthB. It provides free food for all.C. It's the best comedy feast.D. It is concerned about the royal family.BFor the past 13 years, Martin Burrows has been working as a long-distance truck driver. Spending up to five nights a week on the road can be a lonely business, leaving him with plenty of time to notice his surroundings. “I kept seeing more rubbish everywhere and it was getting on my nerves. I decided I had to do something about it,” he says. One day, he stopped his vehicle, took out a trash bag and started picking up the garbage. The satisfaction after clearing a small area was remarkable. Before his time on the road, Burrows spent over two decades in the military as a vehicle driver. His service saw him stationed throughout Europe and also on tours in Afghanistan. After returning to civilian life, he was diagnosed with PTSD(创伤后应激障碍)and had a mental health crisis in 2017. His involvement in fundraising for Help for Heroes led him to meet a man who used model-building as a distraction from PTSD. Burrows realized that his act of roadside cleanup had a similar calming effect on his mental well-being.By 2019, Burrows had begun using his free time on the road to regularly clean up garbage. A passerby encouraged him to set up a Facebook group, which he called Truckers Cleaning Up Britain. “I was worried I'd be the laughing stock of my town for putting videos and photos up of me cleaning but people started to join,” he says. “I was amazed. The local council stepped in and gave me litter-picking supplies and we're up to almost 3,000 members now.”Since truckers are so often on the move, the Facebook page acts as a means of raising awareness rather than a platform for organizing cleanups. Burrows expressed his intention to continue the cleanup efforts as long as his physical condition allowed, as he still found joy in the process.4. What initially caused Burrows to pick up roadside garbage?A. He wanted to kill time by picking up litter.B. He aimed to raise fund for soldiers with PTSD.C. He felt annoyed to see the increasing rubbish.D. He received the assignment from his employer.5. How did collecting roadside garbage affect Burrows' PTSD?A. It resulted in his embarrassment.B. It increased his sense of isolation.C. It worsened his stress and anxiety.D. It brought him comfort and relief.6. What concerned Burrows when he started Truckers Cleaning Up Britain?A. He feared being teased for his action.B. He was lacking in advanced cleanup tools.C. He was unsure about the group's development.D. He worried about the local council's disapproval.7. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. A Joyful V olunteer ExperienceB. A Trucker's Cleanup InitiativeC. A Fighting Hero against PTSDD. A Platform for EnvironmentalistsCWhen most people think of drones(无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well.Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones, and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. “We really want to help farming and agriculture. I's super-important to America and our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides(杀虫剂).”The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff . Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need and what they don't.However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.“We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well and fly low enough that it is not using up all of its power,” she says. “The fields are a couple hundred acres(英亩), so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field.”Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will help the farmers and the environment.8. What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. challenges.B. features.C. benefits.D. solutions.9. What particular usage is the drone designed for?A. Spreading proper quantities of pesticides.B. Helping to determine the chemicals needed.C. Assisting to monitor the state of crops.D. Measuring the areas of the fields.10. What technical issue of the drone shall be tackled?A. Its camera capacity.B. Its data collection ability.C. Its durability and control.D. Its material and efficiency.11. What can best describe the students?A. Disciplined and realistic.B. Experienced and reliable.C. Humble and reserved.D. Responsible and creative.DAi-Da sits behind a desk, a paintbrush in her hand. She looks up at the person posing for her, and then back down as she applies another drop of paint onto the canvas(画布). A lifelike portrait is taking shape. If you didn't know a robot produced it, this portrait could pass as the work of a human artist.Ai-Da produces portraits of sitting subjects using a robotic hand attached to her lifelike figure. She's also able to talk, giving detailed answers to questions about her artistic process and attitudes towards technology. She even gave a TEDx talk titled “The Intersection of Art and AI” in Oxford several years ago. Ai-Da's creators have also been experimenting with having her write and perform her own poetry. But how are we to interpret Ai-Da's output? Should we consider her paintings and poetry original and creative? Are these works actually art? What discussions about AI and creativity often overlook is the fact that creativity isn't an absolute quality that can be defined, measured and reproduced objectively. When we describe an object—for instance, a child's drawing—as being creative, we project our own assumptions about culture onto it. Indeed, art never exists in isolation. It always needs someone to give it “art” status. And the criteria for whether you think something is art are formed by both your expectations and broader cultural conceptions. If we extend this line of thinking to AI, it follows that no Al application or robot can objectively be “creative”. It is always we—humans—that decide whether works created by AI are art. Some may see robot-produced paintings as something coming from creative computers, while others may be skeptical, given the fact that robots act on clear human instructions. In any case, attribution(归属)of creativity never depends on technical arrangement alone—no computer is objectively creative. Rather, the attribution of computational creativity is largely inspired by contexts of reception. Through particular social information, some people are inspired to think of AI output as art, systems as artists, and computers as creators. Therefore, as with any piece of art, your appreciation of AI output ultimately depends on your own interpretation.12. What can we learn about Ai-Da?A. She has a complex many-sided personality.B. She beat others in the debate on art and ALC. She is capable of drawing high-quality portraits.D. She can write poems without being programmed.13. What fact do discussions about AI and creativity often ignore?A. That art is content-based.B. That art can take many forms.C. That creativity is closely related to cultures.D. That creativity is often measured subjectively.14. What idea does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?A. Every coin has two sides.B. Great minds think alike.C. Four eyes see more than two.D. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.15. What would be the best title for the text?A. Is AI-created Art Really Art?B. Will People Accept AI Artists?C. Can We Use Al to Create Portraits?D. Do We Need to Improve AI's Creativity?第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.6分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

We can tell dogs what w e want them to do and sometimes they comply, but we’ve always struggled when it comes to understanding the true meaning of their barks and whimpers. There is exciting news now –a dog translator has been invented to help you communicate with your furry friend.Researchers at North Carolina State University have fashioned some kind of miracle dog translator body harness(束腰带). What’s special about it is that it doesn't just rely on the dog’s vocalizations to interpret(口译) what Fido is banging on about.Oh no –this miracle harness reads and interprets the ordinary dogs’ body language as well, giving us a full two-way dog communication experience.Researcher David Roberts says: "Dogs communicate primarily through body language, and one of our challenges was to develop sensors that tell us about their behavior by observing their posture remotely."Sensors on the harness monitor the dog’s heart rate and body temperature and software builds up a vocabulary, letting the human know what the dog is feeling. What would dogs say if they could talk to us? The human can even communicate backthrough the harness thanks to vibration motors, supposedly by tapping into the dog’s senses so that it can understand what you’re trying to say to it.The dog harness is designed for dogs involved in search and rescue and other front-line work, but it's got us dreaming of a beautiful future, one where humans and dogs can co-exist as equals, with the dog able to fully express itself at all times.4. Why can’t people c ommunicate with dogs?A. They have difficulty understanding dogs’ barks and whimpers.B. They have no idea about dogs’ behavior in relation to their posture.C. They don’t know how to tell dogs what they want them to do.D. They don’t have a machine to translate the dogs’ language.5. What does the underlined word most probably mean in paragraph two?A. Pursue fashion.B. Research.C. Influence.D. Make.6. For what purpose is the dog harness designed?A. It is designed for dogs to understand what people are trying to say to them.B. It is designed for a full two-way dog communication experience.C. It is designed to monitor the dog’s heart rate and body temperature.D. It is designed for dogs doing search and rescue and other front-line work.7. What is the author’s attitude towards the possible human-dog communication?A. Shocked.B. Excited.C. Embarrassed.D. Annoyed.CWhat is the most common cause for people in the UK to ask for leave due to illness? The answer is not the common cold or flu, but back pain. Back pain affects one in three British adults, costs the country over 5 billion pounds every year and is very difficult to treat. But now Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) will be offering a new solution: acupuncture(针灸). The ancient Chinese needle treatment has been around in the UK for many years, but this is the first time it has been officially approved by the NHS.Traditionally, doctors in the UK have advised back pain sufferers to stay active,do stretching exercises and take painkillers when necessary. In more serious cases some people are given X-ray treatment or injections with medicines. However, there is evidence that acupuncture may be more effective than expensive X-rays or injections, so patients who have been suffering for over six weeks should be given a choice. As an alternative to acupuncture, patients will be able to choose either a course of spinal manipulation (脊柱推拿), or a series of special exercise sessions. In the UK, acupuncture is regarded as an aiding treatment, which means medical procedure hasn’t experienced serious experiments by which scientists prove some treatments work. While many experts have welcomed the policy to make acupuncture available on the NHS, some are still skeptical(怀疑的) about its effectiveness.Research from the US earlier this month found that similar acupuncture using toothpicks (牙签) which do not stick into the skin could be as good as using real needles. So while some are yet to be convinced, back pain sufferers will be hoping that acupuncture helps get them feeling healthy again.8. According to the passage, which is the best way to treat back pain?A. To stay active.B. To be acupunctured.C. To do stretching exercises.D. To take X-ray treatment or injections.9. Why are some people still doubtful about the effectiveness of acupuncture?A. Because they have other choices.B. Because acupuncture is just an aiding treatment.C. Because using toothpicks is as good as using real needles.D. Because acupuncture hasn’t been tested by scientists strictly.10. What does the author want to prove in the last paragraph?A. Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for back pain.B. Toothpicks as a useful tool for acupuncture is widely accepted by people in the UK.C. Needles are no better than toothpicks.D. Toothpicks will take place of needles in the future.11. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The magic needles.B. Acupuncture in the UK.C. The ways to treat back pain.D. The reasons for people to ask for leave.DResearchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger's personality simply by looking at the person's shoes. "Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers," the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. "Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal clues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear."Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected (发现) in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 University of Kansas students looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more “friendly” people, while ankle boots were more closely connected with “aggressive” personalities. The strangest of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take exceptional care of them, you may suffer from “attachment anxiety,” spending too much time worrying about what others think of your appearance. There was even a political calculation in the mix with wearing “shabbier and less expensive” shoes. The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality traits, but researchers pointed out that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personalities.12. By looking at a person’s shoes, it’s possible for people to___________.A. know the wearer thoroughlyB. estimate the wearer’s characterC. have exact cl ues about the wearer’s social statusD. j udge the wearer’s educational background13. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A. In the study, people’s personality traits were detected.B. In the study, participants wore 208 different shoes.C. In the study, 63 students were asked to fill out questionnaire about personality.D. In the study, judgments were made according to various characteristics of people’s shoes.14. Taking exceptional care of new shoes shows that ____________.A. the owners care much about others’ opinions on th eir appearanceB. the owners are in a relaxed stateC. the owners are particular about their appearanceD. the owners have too many shoes to choose from15. What is the best title of the passage?A. How To Choose Suitable ShoesB. How To Judge Peo ple’s Personality TraitsC. People Are What They WearD. AHummingbirds (蜂鸟) are very small birds. This small bird is quite an acrobat (杂技演员). Only a few birds, such as kingfishers and sunbirds, can hover, which means to stay in one place in the air. But no other bird can match the flying skills of the hummingbird. The hummingbird can hover, fly backward and fly upside down!Hummingbirds got their name because their wings move very quickly when they fly. This causes a humming sound. Their wings move so fast that you can’t see them at all. This takes a lot of energy. These little birds must have food about every 20 minutes to have enough strength to fly. Their favorite food is nectar (花蜜). Nectar is the sweet water deep inside a flower. Hummingbirds use their long, thin bills to drink from flowers. When a hummingbird drinks nectar, it hovers in front of a flower. It never touches the flower with its wings or feet.Of all the birds in the world, the hummingbird’s colors are among the brightest. Some are bright green with red and white markings. Some are purple. One kind of hummingbird can change its color from reddish-brown to purple to red!The hummingbird’s nest is special, too. It looks like a small cup. The inside of the nest is very soft. This is because one of the things the mother bird uses to build the nest is the silk from a spider’s web (蜘蛛网).1. What is special about hummingbirds?A. They are the only birds that can hover.B. They have excellent flying skills.C. They can walk on water.D. They can fly very high.2. Hummingbirds got their name from _____.A. their foodB. their small bodiesC. the sound they makeD. the color of their wings3. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?A. Hummingbirds’ markings are dark.B. A kind of hummingbird has one color.C. The hummingbird is one of the prettiest birds.D. Some hummingbirds change their colors for protection.4. According to the text, a hummingbird’s nest is _____.A. difficult to findB. hard and strongC. made by the father birdD. built partly from spider silkBWe just love giving cards in Britain. If there’s a special occasion coming up, there’s no doubt that we’ll be there, card in hand, to celebrate it.And this isn’t just for birthdays; we also give cards when people are ill or when they have got a new job. And even if you forgot somebody’s birthday, there are even “sorry it’s late” cards. So you can pretty much find a card for any occasion. Before coming to Italy I had never even considered that our love for card giving might not be shared by other countries. In fact, my workmates told me that hardly anyone sends Christmas cards in Italy and that they actually don’t really give birthday cards either! Unbelievable! In the UK, if a close friend or family member didn’t get me a card I’d feel upset! However, the only place you can buy cardsin Italy is in a shop which sells school things. In comparison, we have whole shops that sell them in the UK and we even have different types of card shops.Although cards can take up your time, from choosing the perfect one, to thinking up the perso nal message inside, I think it’s a really nice gesture. And especially with Christmas cards, it adds to that festive feeling. When I sit down to write countless cards to friends and family, I get that little bit happier that it will be Christmas soon! Especially when I see my own Christmas cards, proudly sitting on my desk wishing me a very merry Christmas.Of course, the problem comes when they’re no longer needed, when Christmas is over. It makes me sad just to throw them all away, so I try and hang on to my favorite ones.5. According to Paragraph 1, in the UK card giving _____.A. is very popularB. is changing people’s livesC. is mainly carried out on birthdaysD. is more common between family members6. After arriving in Italy, the author found that _____.A. Italians seldom send cardsB. cards are sold in card shopsC. the relationship between people is badD. card giving is losing its attraction slowly7. Which of the following may the author agree with?A. Self-made cards make Christmas happy.B. Gi ving cards doesn’t take up any time.C. Throwing cards away is a bad gesture.D. There is no need to save every card.8. What’s the author’s attitude towards card giving?A. He supports it.B. He doubts it.C. He disagrees with it.D. He is uninterested in it.CPeople are always looking for lost cities and occasionally one is found: Borobudur in Indonesia, for example. But perhaps some of the places people look for never existed — or did they? Here are just a few famous mythical (传说中的) cities. El DoradoEl Dorado is a story that began in 1537, when Spanish explorers found the Muisca people in the mountains of what is now Colombia. They heard the story of a man who covered himself with gold and dived into a lake. Then people began to talk of El Dorado —‘the golden man’. Soon people started to think of El Dorado as aplace, too —a city of gold and amazing riches. Nowadays, the name ‘El Dorado’ is still used to mean ‘a place where you can get rich quickly’.AtlantisThere was once an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was the mythical island of Atlantis. The people of the island were very rich, thanks to the natural resources (资源) on their island. For hundreds of years, they lived simple lives. But slowly they began to change. They started to want power. So the gods decided to destroy Atlantis. Suddenly, the island and its people were swallowed (淹没) by the sea and were never seen again.ShambhalaIn Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Shambhala is a mystical (神秘的) country that is hidden somewhere behind the Himalayas. Shambhala is a word from an old language that means ‘place of peace’ or ‘place of happiness’. It is said that there is no war in Shambhala, and in the future, when the world is full of war, a huge army will come out of Shambhala, destroy the world’s bad rulers, and start a new Golden Age. I sat up, somehow terrified, so I could hear the phone call better. To my surprise, I heard my mom burst into tears. “Get the car Dean! Andrea has been in a car accident.”We ran every stop sign on the way to the hospital and our tires screeched around every corner. We got to the hospital, but were not allowed to see Andrea. The next morning, after wearing masks, we were allowed to go to the ICU to see Andrea. Well, the least I could say was that everything was injured in her body and she lost all of her memories. It was a fatal accident.Over the next two months, I lived more at the hospital than I did at my house.I watched as Andrea worked so hard to gain back everyday motor skills. She never once complained or pitied herself, her determined spirit was shining through. After two weeks in the ICU and two months of the regular hospital treatment, Andrea was able to come home. She missed several months of school, so it was hard for her to catch up. Andrea had tasks to accomplish, and no matter how hard it was, she stuck with them until the job was done. Though busy with dealing with pain and therapy, she always found time to love and play with me.I’ll never forget the impact that this incident made on my life. I admire her strong-willed personality and her determined spirit. Today she is perfectly normal, despite the scars and the pins holding her leg in place. I couldn’t ask for a better sister, hero, or best friend.26.The writer sat up to hear the call because he _______A. sensed that something terrible had happened.B. might be very concerned about who phoned so late.C. wanted to scold the people who phoned so late.D. was not sure whether the telephone concerned him.27. During the treatment, Andrea _______A. had to give up all her studiesB. stopped playing with the writer.C. refused to be accompanied.D. showed unbelievable strength.28. What would be the best title for the passage?A. My Sister---- the Hero in My LifeB. A Miracle Happening to My SisterC. An Accident Which Changed My SisterD. An Incident Which Influenced Me Much.BHave you ever met the situation where you kept thinking that there are opportunities, or chances, which are better than your current one? This is the syndrome(综合症) when you are looking at the other side of the grass and think that the grass is greener on the other side and is also what I call the “greener grass”syndrome. Why are you like this? Uncertainty and curiosity play a big part in creating the “greener grass” syndrome. If you have his syndrome, you are likely to miss a lot of things you have now. when you are always focusing on other opportunities. So what can you do to treat the “greener grass” syndrome? I have to congratulate the other incredible nominees(提名者)this year for their unbelievable performances. “The Revenant” was a product of the tireless efforts of an unbelievable cast and crew I got to work alongside. First off to my brother in this endeavor, Mr. Tom Hardy. Tom, your fierce talent on-screen can only be surpassed by your friendship off screen. As the history of cinema unfolds, you have forged your way into history these past two years. Thank you for creating an outstanding cinematic experience for all of us. Thank you to everybody at Fox and New Regency, my entire team. I have to thank everyone from the very beginning of mycareer. Mr. Caton Jones for casting my first film. And to my friends, I love you dearly, you know who you are.“And lastly I just want to say this: Making “The Revenant” was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world that we all felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work together immediately and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, or all the people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. But does it tell the full story?I have hated getting up early all my life. The moment the alarm goes off in the morning I feel sick and it’s hard to stomach any food until mid-morning. Nights, though, are a different story; I’ll happily stay up and I’ll do anything to escape an early start. This makes me an owl, but I know plenty of larks who insist that dawn is the best part of the day. While I stumble into work bleary-eyed, they have been up for hours and even seem cheerful about it. By the evening the roles are reversed(颠倒). This is where we come into our own.But it is a myth to say that society is neatly divided into lark and owls. Surveys that explore what time of day people prefer to do activities reveal that only 20% of adults are true larks or owls. That leaves 80% of us---half of which lean to towards one direction or the other, the other half are neither. That’s terrible for those owls around the world who have to exist in a society organized around the larks. Schools and work often start very early, and ther e’s a sense of love for getting up early, while the owls are simply slovenly. But no one suggests that the larks are lazy for having an early night while owls are working.Fortunately science is on my side. I’m not sleeping my life away or missing the best part of the day. I’m behaving according to my genes. Researchers have found that your chronotype(睡眠类型) is to a large extent genera. So it seems that when I try to get up early I am fighting my genes. With the help of an alarm clock I can force myself to get up early. But as soon as I fail to set the alarm my genes will return to my old ways.37.
