This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before midnight. It looked like it was going to be a good day. Then he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. Daryl often passed dead animals on the roadside but he knew then this was something different. He slammed on his brakes and the truck screeched to a halt. The lump was a girl. He tried shaking her awake but she wouldn’t move, so he picked her up and carried her to the side of the road. A t least she wouldn’t be run over there. Now she was someone else’s problem. He had to make it to Los Angeles by midnight and didn’t have time to be a here. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl lying still by the si de of the road, he knew he couldn’t leave her. Daryl put her into his truck and drove to the next town.An hour later he pulled up at the police station. After explaining what had happened, he prepared to leave, only for the policeman to say that he needed to make a report. Daryl knew this would take several hours, but he had no choice. There was no way he’d get to Los Angeles on time now.Three hours later the report was done and the girl had recovered somewhat. She explained that she had fallen on the highway, weak from hunger, but could remember nothing else. She also thanked Daryl for saving her life. Daryl told her that he had been happy to help, but as he got back into his truck he knew his boss wouldn’t be.Just as he was about to pull back onto the r oad, his mother called. “Have you seen?” she said, “A bridge collapsed two hours ago, the one that you drive over on the way to Los Angeles.”Daryl’s blood run cold. If he had been on time, he would have been on that fallen bridge about two hours ago. Daryl realized how lucky he was.24. What did Daryl plan to do in Los Angeles?A. Go on holiday.B. Deliver some goods.C. Visit his mum.D. Report to his boss.25. Why did Daryl first leave the girl by the side of the road?A. He didn’t want to be late.B. He thought the girl would be fine.C. Daryl was greatly shocked by the news.D. Daryl felt the sudden change in temperature.CHave you ever wondered when dogs first became “man’s best friend” and the world’s favourite pet? If you have, then you’re not alone. When and wher e dogs first began living side-side with humans are questions that have stirred hot debate among scientists. There are a few hard facts that all agree on. These include that dogs were once wolves and they were the first animal to be domesticated(驯养) by humans. They came into lives some 15000 years ago, before the dawn of agriculture.Beyond that, there is little agreement. The earliest bones found that are unquestionable dogs and not wolves date from 14,000 years ago. However, 30,000-year-old skulls have been discovered in France and Belgium that are not pure wolf and some scientists think could be dogs. With such puzzling evidence, many scientists are now turning to DNA to find out when and where dogs were first domesticated. In one research project, tens of thousands of blood samples have been taken from street dogs around the world. The plan is to compare them with those of wolves. It’s even possible to analyse DNA from ancient bones. Tiny pieces of the 30,000-year-old skulls mentioned earlier are currently being studied, and another DNA study has already shown that ancient dogs preserved in the Alaskan ice-fields evolved from Asian wolves, not American ones.Indeed, the ancient DNA may turn out to be more informative than the DNA of living dogs. Because dogs have accompanied humans around the world for thousands of years, their current distribution may tell us very little of their origins. This is why different groups of scientists believe that dogs variously originated in eastern Asia,Mongolia, Siberia, Europe or Africa. But why were the animals domesticated in the first place? The most recent theory is that dogs domesticated themselves, initially living in and around our ancient villages to eat any food thrown out. Today, this is a way of life still shared by three -quarters of a billion unowned dogs worldwide.28.Which is the only statement generally agreed on by scientists studying dogs?A.They originally were used as farm animalB.They evolved from wolves found in EuropeC.They helped the development of agricultureD.They were the first animal to be kept as pets29.Why does the writer first mention the 30,000-year-old animals skulls?A.To show that dogs were much larger in the pastB.To prove that dogs developed from Asian wolvesC.To suggest that dogs may have evolved much earlierD.To argue that dogs were first kept in France and Belgium30.How did scientists determine the origins of the ancient dogs found in Alaska?A.By analyzing the age of their bonesB.B. By examine the animals’ DNAC.By studying the shape of their skullsD.D. By comparing them with modern dogs31.Why did dogs start living with humans?A.Because they were attracted by foodB.B. Because they were trapped by humansC.Because they couldn’t survive in the wildD.D. Because they were trained to protect villagesDSpace is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors(流星) but also because of rays from the sun and others stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanketon earth. Light gets through, and this is essential for plants to make the food which we eat. Heat, too, makes our environment endurable. Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called “rem”. Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage --- a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her physical organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed children or even grandchildren.Missions of the Apollo flight have had to cross belts of high amount of rems. So far, no dangerous amounts of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far.32.According to the first paragraph, the atmosphere is essential to man in that ________A. it provides enough light for plant growth.B. it protects man against the harmful rays from space.C. it supplies the heat necessary for human survival.D. it screens off the falling meteors.33. Why is it difficult to identify space radiation damage?A.The effect of exposure to radiation is slow in coming.B. Tiny amounts of radiation do no harm to human body.C. Only more than 60 rems of radiation can be discovered immediately.D. Astronauts in spacesuits won’t be hurt by radiation.34. It can be inferred from the passage that _______A. the Apollo mission was very successful.B. astronauts will have disabled children or grandchildren.C. protection from space radiation is no easy job.D. radiation is not a threat to well-protected space explorers.35. The best title for this passage would be ______.A. The Atmosphere and Our EnvironmentB. Research on RadiationC. Importance of Protection Against RadiationD. Effects of Space Radiation第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

D.Nearpod.24.A teacher who wants to learn on-line teaching is expected to arrive by_____.A.3:30 pm B.2:00 pm C.10:30 am D.9:00 amBSome years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn't accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen...At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling.I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I'm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won't have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I'll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don't live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves.25. What caused a change in the author's understanding of keeping a diary?A. A dull night on the journey.B. The beauty of the great valley.C. A striking quotation from a book.D. Her concerns for future generations.26. Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ________.A. observing her school routineB. expressing her satisfactionC. impressing her classmatesD. preserving her history27.What does the author put in her diary now?A. Special thoughts and feelings.B. Notes and beautiful pictures.C. Detailed accounts of daily activities.D. Descriptions of unforgettable events.28.The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ________.A. to live the present in the futureB. to experience itC.to make memoriesD.to give accurate representations of itCLife is filled with challenges. As we get older we come to realize that those challenges are the very things that shape us and make us who we are, it is the same with the challenges that come with friendship. When we are faced with a challenge,we usually have two choices. We can try to beat it off, or we can decide that the thing presenting the challenge isn’t w orth the trouble and call it quits. Although there are certain times when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most cases all that is needed is commitment(承诺)and communication. When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how painful or how uncomfortable something is, we will always choose to face it through instead of running away from it. Communication is making space for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other per- son did wrong. If you can say to a friend, “I got my feelings hurt.” rather than“You hurt my feelings.” you are going to be able to solve the problem much faster. In dealing with many challenges that friendship will bring to you, try to see them for what they are: small hurdles you need to jump or get through on your way through life. Nothing is so big that it is im- possible to get over, and hurt only serves to make us stronger. It is all part of growing up; it happens to everyone, and some day you will look back on all of this and say, “Hard as it was, it made me who I am today. And that is a good thing. ”29.The underlined word "committed" can be replaced by_________A. SympathizedB. SatisfiedC. DevotedD. interested30.It can be inferred from the text that _________.A. friendship needs challengesB. challenges shape our characterC. small hurdles aren't worth the troubleD. commitment promotes friendship31. The whole passage is centered on the relationship between______.A. friendship and challengesB. commitment and communicationC. communication and friendshipD. challenges and the ways to get through32.The writer suggests that _________when facedwith a challenge.A.one should call it quitsB.one should temporarily run away from itC.one should be committed and communicableD.one should lay it aside for a whileD"Indeed," George Washington wrote in his diary in 1785, "some kind of fly, or bug, had begun to eat the leaves before I left home." But the father of America was not the father of bug. When Washington wrote that, Englishmen had been referring to insects as bugs for more than a century, and Americans had already created lightning-bug(萤火虫). But the English were soon to stop using the bugs in their language, leaving it to the Americans to call a bug a bug in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The American bug could also be a person, referring to someone who was crazy about a particular activity. Although fan became the usual term, sports fans used to be called racing bugs, baseball bugs, and the like.Or the bug could be a small machine or object, for example, a bug-shaped car. The bug could also be a burglar alarm, from which comes the expression to, bug, that is, "to install(安装) an alarm". Now it means a small piece of equipment that people use for listening secretly to others’ conversations. Since the 1840s, to bug haslong meant "to cheat", and since the 1940s it has been annoying. We also know the bug as a flaw in a computer program or other design. That meaning dates back to the time of Thomas Edison. In 1878 he explained bugs as "little problems and difficulties" that required months of study and labor to overcome in developing a successful product. In 1889 it was recorded that Edison "had been up the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his invented record player."33.We learn from Paragraph 1 that .A. both Englishmen and Americans used the word bug in the eighteenth centuryB. George Washington was the first person to call an insect a bugC. the word bug was still popularly used in England in the nineteenth centuryD. Americans had difficulty in learning to use the word bug34.The passage is mainly concerned with .A. the misunderstanding of the word bugB. the development of the word bugC. the public views of the word bugD. the special characteristics of the word bug35.What does the word "flaw" in the last paragraph probably mean?A. After you've done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York tasted the local food in Paris, and danced to your heart's content at the Brazilian carnival, where else can you go? What exotic tourist destination awaits you?Well, Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! It's considered the last great wildness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can cope with the low temperatures.Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and it's still small scale. About 37,000 tourists are expected there this season, but many won't even leave the boat. The BBC's Juliet Rix visited the frozen continent and asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment. Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave a footprint and they all go to the same places, the accessible coastline, which is also where the penguins and seals go to breed. But some people believe that if carefully controlled, tourism can be good for Antarctica. It has no native population and it needs advocates. Visitors to the icy continent might be ready to support and even to fund its preservation. And they're likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers.According to Rix, guidelines are followed when you're about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect(消毒) their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced. And once on land, there's no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments - nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind.Tourists fortunate enough to visit the Antarctica must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breathtaking views.5.What can we infer from the second paragraph?A.The Antarctica has become the best place for people to travelB.only scientists can be allowed to go to AntarcticaC.Antarctica is less affected by human activitiesD.no animals can survive in Antarctica except penguins6.Juliet Rix's travel in Antarctica mentioned in the fourth paragraph indicatesthat________.ernments should take measures to stop tourists from going to AntarcticaB.whether tourists should go to Antarctica or not should be considered carefullyC.the animals- habitat in Antarctica has been seriously affected by tourismD.only journalists begin to pay attention to the environmental protection in Antarctica7.What does the underlined word“disinfect” in the sixth paragaph prabably mean?A.Clean.B.Move.C.Remove.D.Change.CMost heroes are not super. They don't appear in comic books, on television,or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He's a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index,a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him—supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did. After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested. In one case, Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary. His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called “RobinHood”. Since he wasn’t exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, “Batman”seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation as a friendly city.8.
