In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!" In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift,it means she will marry him. Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.A love seat is a wide chair. It was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together -- but not too closely! Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry. As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off. Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have. If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have.1. It exists to promote a free-market international trade system. The WTO promotes trade by:1. reducing tariffs;2. prohibiting import or export bans or quotas;3. eliminating discrimination against foreign products and services;4. eliminating other impediments to trade, commonly called "non-tariff trade barriers''.With China's successful entry into WTO in Nov 2001, it currently has 135 member countries, accounting for over 90% of world trade. Over 30 others are negotiating membership. The WTO's top-level decision-making body is the ministerial conference which meets at least once every two years. Over three-quarters of WTO members are developing countries. Special provisions for these members are included in the WTO's agreements. GATT is now the WTO's principal rule-book.Decisions are made by the entire membership by consensus or majority vote. The WTO's agreements have been ratified in all members' parliaments. If a trade barrier is found to be unfair, the WTO can authorize the imposition of trade sanctions to force a change in that country's law. The WTO exempts trade barriers which are designed to conserve naturalresources or protect health.Critics say the WTO credits agreements are skewed in favor of rich countries. The west may preach trade liberalization, but it has used negotiations to prize third world market while keeping its own barriers intact.1.When was the World Trade Organization established?2. What is the aim of establishing the WTO?3. According to the passage, how many member countries does the WTO currently have?4. Which of the following statements is NOT true?5. What does the WTO do if a trade barrier is found to be unfair in a certain country?1.GATT,2.over 90%,3.the ministerial conference,4.conserve natural resources, protect health,5.in favor of rich countries.Passage IIWorld financial circles affirm that this year has witnessed the most forceful economic growth over the past 13 years. The growth rate is expected to reach 4.7 percent, much higher than the 2.5 percent in 1998 and the 3.3 percent in 1999. The average economic growth rate of developed countries may reach 4.2 percent this year. The US economy continues to lead the tide of the world economic growth, with its economic growth rate getting close to 5.2 percent. The European economic situation is also better than that in previous years, and the average growth rate of the 11 countries in the Euro zone is to reach 3.5 percent. The Japanese economy has freed itself from a slump, and its growth rate this year may reach 1.9 percent, higher than the average growth rate in the past 10 years. The average economic growth rate of the developing countries this year can reach 5.6 percent. The economic development in the Asian developing regions has attracted people's attention. Their growth rate this year may reach 7.1 percent. The Russian economy has had an unexpected, strong recovery from the 1998 crisis, with the growth rate possibly reaching 6 percent.Among the many factors that have boosted world economic growth, the growing information technological industry is playing an increasingly outstanding role. The information technological industry is becoming a leading industry in the national economy and a new economic growth point. According to experts' estimate, file current contribution rate of the information technological industry to the world economic growth is 18.2 percent. Its ratio in the growth of the US economy is even higher, standing at one-third. He made this address at the eighth informal meeting of leaders of the APEC forum. He explained that the "New Economy" refers to the kind of economy initiated and sustained by new technologies and hi-tech industries. The advancement of technology, led by IT and biotechnology industries, is giving rise to a new industrial revolution, Jiang said.Developing countries are faced with the difficult task of both transforming their traditional industries and developing new industries, Jiang noted, adding that continued expansion of the 'digital divide" has widened the wealth gap between North and South and may trigger new imbalances in the world economy."Against the background of accelerated economic globalization and the dynamic progress of science and technology, we must facilitate cooperation between developed and developing countries on exchanges of human resources,。

I'll give u the activity schedule later. But, now I want to answer a question one of u asked me yesterday about campers with asthma. Let me explain a little about the disease. First of all, it's chronic and very common. 20 million people in the United States alone have it. It affects the bronchial tubes, that is the airways of the lungs. During normal breathing, air is drawn in through the mouse and nose, and eventually makes this way into the bronchial tubes. The asthma patient's bronchial tubes are very sensitive, and easily irritated by exercises or strength, exposure to allergen(过敏原) or pollution, or breathing in cold air, or cigarettes smoke. When asthmatic suffers an attack, the airway path was constricted, making it difficult for the person from breathing normally. If a camper in your group has even a mild case of asthma, you would be informed and given further instructionsabout what to do in case of an attack. But don't worry. Some of our campers might have a mild case, but they always bring their medicines with them and we never have a problem. Are there any other questions? Ok, let's talk about the schedules for tomorrow.40:Q: what does the speaker mainly discuss?41:Q: according to the speaker, what part of asthmatic's body is particularly sensitive?42:Q: what does the speaker say about the camps who have asthma?43:Q: why does the speaker mention cigarette smoke?44-47:Question 44-47Today most astronomers accept the notion that groups of stars that make up the universe are all moving farther and farther away from each other. but until very recently this idea of an expanding universe was not a theory most European scholars believed in. Since ancient times and up to about the 17th century most of these scholars thought the size of the universe have remained unchangedsince the moment of its creation or perhaps forever, with all the stars remaining more or less in place in relation to each other. but that was challenged in the late 17th century by Izic Newton's idea of gravity as a force of attraction, which contradicted the idea of a university that is static, unchanging. If gravity causes all the stars out there in space to attract each other as Newton said, then they could remain centrally motionless. Sooner or later all the stars will fall in towards each other. well, scientists then propose a new model, taking Newton's theory into account, they didn't want to abandon the idea of motionless stars, but for this model to work, so the stars wouldn’t fall in each other, they had to modify Newton's law of gravity, so they theorize that for distance as large as those between stars, the gravitation force repels rather attracts. As you might guess, this let to some other contradictions. But this is prettily resolved in the past centuries by the currently accepted theory, which says the universe is continuously expanding. You'll be reading all about that as your homework tonight.44:Q: what does the professor mainly discuss?45: Q: what did most European scholars believe before 17th century about the size of the universe?46:Q: what did some scientists try to explain by suggesting that stars repel each other?47:Q: what will the students read about for homework?48-50:Question 48-50On Monday we talked about insects, and how they gather food. Today I'd like to talk about the common garden spider and how it captures its prey with the round net-like structure it first produced almost 200 million years ago. I mean, of course a spider web. What's interesting is why such a delicate structure isn't ripped apart when a fast-flying insect crashes into it, and compared with the spider, these insects can be huge and really heavy. In fact capturing a large insect in a spider web could be compared to capture an airplane in a fishing net. So, how can the web offset such a shock without breaking? is it just because the silk like thread is made of so strong? well, experts analyze spider webs using a computer program designed when an insect crashed and caught and they found the structure of the web, the way of threads connected together helps balance the strength and tensions caused by the impact and spread them all across the web this saves the web from being destroyed and by the way, suggests some creative new ideas that human might use in designing buildings. The big surprise, though, is the role of air resistance in cushioning(缓冲) the shock of collision. The computer model showed that dragging a tinythread from a spider web through the air is a lot like pulling a heavy rope through water. And since air resistance acts on many threads all across the web its amazing effect that multiplies many times. And this definitely helps the web survive the impact48:Q: what is the talk mainly about?49: Q :What does the speaker say about some of the insects that spiders capture?50:Q: according to the speaker, who might benefit from studying spider webs?。

I need to find a handle that matches, but that shouldn’t take too long.Q: What does the man mean?Q14.M: This truck looks like what I ne ed but I’m worried about maintenance. For us, it will have to operate for long periods of time in very cold temperatures.W: We have several models that especially adapted for extreme conditions. Would you like to see them?Q: What’s the man’s demand f rom the conversation?Q15.M: I think your boss will be very upset when he gets your letter of resignation.W: That may be so. But in the letter, I just told him frankly I could no longer live with his poor management and stupid decisions.Q: What do we learn about the woman?Q16.W: I’d like to exchange the shirt. I’ve learned the person I bought it for is allergic to wool.M: maybe we can find something in cotton or silk. Please come this way.Q: What does the woman want to do?Q17.M: Excuse me Miss, did anyone happen to turn in a new hand bag? You know it’s a birthday gift for my wife.W: Let me see. Oh, we’ve got quite a lot of women’s bags here. Can you give me more detailed information, such as its color, the size and the trade mark?Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?Q18.W: What’re you going to do with the old house you inherited from your grandfather?M: I once intended to sell it. But now I’m thinking of turning it into a g uest house, because it’s still a solid structure.Q: What does the man plan to do with his old house?W: there is an element there about the competitioner, isn’t there? Because British railways are a nationalized industry, there isn’t any one railway sys tem in the country. If you don’t like a particular kind of big beans, you can go on by another; but if you don’t like the particular railway, you can’t go on using anotherM: some people who write to me say this. They say that if you did not have a monop oly, you would not be able to do the things you do. Well, I don’t think we do anything deliberately to upset our customers, we have particular problems. Since 1946, when the Transport Act came in, we were nationalized.W: Do you think that is a good thing? Has it been a good thing for the railways, do you think, to be nationalized?M: Oh, I think so, yes, because in general, mosts of the transports are all around. Let’s face the fact, the car are arrived the cars are here to stay. There is no question about thatW:So what’s your saying then? Is it if the railways haven’t been nationalized, they would simply have disappeared?M: Oh, I think they would have. They are disappearing fast in America. The French railways lose 1 billion pounds a year, the German railways, 2 billion ayear. But you see those governments are preparing to pour the money into the transport system to keep it goingW: So, In a sense, you call between two extremes. On the one hand, they are trying not to lose too much money, and o n the other hand, you’ve got to provide the best service.M: Yes, you are rightQuestions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you’ve just heard22. What does the woman say about the British railways?23. What do some people who write to the man complain about?24. What does the man say threatens the existence of the railways?25. What does the man say about the railways in other countries? Passage 1Among global warming’s most frightening threats is the prediction that the polar ice caps will melt, raising sea level so much, that coastal cities from New York, to Los Angeles, to Shanghai will be flooded. Scientists agree that they key player in this scenario is the West Antarctic ice sheet. A Brazil size mass frozen water that as much as 7,000 feet thick, unlike floating ice shelves which have little impact on sea level when they break up, the ice sheet is anchored to bedrock will blow the sea surface. Surrounded by an open ocean, it is also vulnerable. But Antarctic experts disagree strongly on just how unstable it is. Now new evidence reveals that all are most of the West Antarctic ice sheet collapsed at least once during the past 1.3 million years-- a period when global temperatures probably will not significantly higher than they are today. And theice sheet was assumed to have been stable. In geologic time, a million years is recent history. The proof which was published last week in Science comes from a team of scientists from Uppsala University in Sweden and Californian Institute of Technology who drill deep holes near the edge of the ice sheet. Within samples collected from the solid substance lying beneath the ice, they found fossils of microscope marine plants which suggests the region was once an open ocean, not solid ice. As Herman Ankleherd, a co-author from Californian Institute of Technology says, “The West Antarctic ice sheet disappeared once and can disappear again.”Questions 26 to question 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.Question 26: What is one of the most frightening threats of global warming according to the passage?Question 27: What did scientists disagree on?Question 28: What does the latest information reveal about West Antarctic ice sheet?Question 29: What does scientists’ latest finding suggest?Passage2It’s always fun to write about reserch you can actually try out yourself. Try this. Take a photo and upload it to Facebook, then after a day or so, know what URL link to the picture is and then delete it. Come back a month later and see if the link works. Chances are, it will. Facebook isn’t alone here. Researches at Cambridge University have found out nearly half of the social netwworking sites don’t delete pictures immediately when a user request they be removed. In general, photo-centric websites like Phlica were found to be better at quicklyremoving deleted photos upon request. Why did deleted photos deck around so long? The problem relates to the way data restored on large websites. While your personal computer only keeps one copy of a file., large-scale services, like Facebook, rely on what are called Content Delivery Networks to manage data and distribution. It’s a complex system where we render data tomutil-intermedia devices usually to speed up access to files when millions of people are trying to access the service at the same time. But because changes aren’t reflected across Content Delivery Networks immediately, ghost copies of files tend to linger for days or weeks. In the case of Facebook, the company says data may hang around until the URL link questioned is reused, which is usually after a short period of time, though obviously that time vary considerably.Question 30 What does the speaker ask us to try out?Question 31 What accounts for the failure of some websites to remove photos immediately?Question 32 When will the unwanted data eventually disappear from Facebook according to the company?Passage3Enjoy an iced coffee, better skip dinner or hit the gym afterwards. With the Cancer Charity warning that some iced coffees contain as many calories as a hot dinner, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) conducted a survey of iced coffee sold by some popular chains in Britain including Starbucks, Cafe Nero and Costa Coffee to give the calories as studies increasingly link obesity with cancer. The worst offender, a coffee from Starbucks had 561 calories, other iced coffees contained more than 450 calories, and the majority had an excess of 200. Health experts advise that the average women should consume about 2000calories a day and a man about 2500 calories to maintain a healthy weight. Dieters in for 1000 to 1500 calories a day. The fact that there is an iced coffee on the market with over a quarter of a woman’s daily calories allowance is alarming. Doctor Rachel Thompson, science programmer manager atLondon-based WCRF, said in a widely reported statement, this is the amount of calories you might expect to have in an evening meal, not in a drink. The WCRF has estimated that 19 thousand cancers a year in Britain could be prevented if people lost their excess weight, with growing evidence that excess body fat increases various cancers. If you are having these types of coffee regularly. Then they will increase chances of you becoming overweight, with in turn increases your risk of developing cancer as well as other diseases such as heart disease, she added.Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.Q33: What warning does some health experts give?Q34: What does the author suggest people do after an iced coffee?Q35: What could British people expect if they maintain the normal body weight according to the WCRF?Psychologists are finding that hope plays a surprisingly vital role in giving people a measurable advantage in zones of diverse as academic achievement, bearing up in tough jobs and coping with tragic illness. And by contrast, the loss of hope is turning out to be a stronger sign that a person may commit suicide than other factors long thought to be more likely risks. Hope’s proved a powerful predictor of outcome in every study we’ve done so far.” said Doctor Charles R Snider. A psychologist who has devised a scale to assess how much hope a person has. For example, in research with 3920 college students, Doctor Snider and his colleagues found that the level of hope among freshmen at the beginning of their first semester was a more accurate predictor of their college grades than were their SAT scores or their grade point averages in high school-the two measures most commonly used to predict college performance. Students with high hope set themselves higher goals and know how to work to attain them.”Doctor Snider said. When you compare students of equivalent intelligence and past academic achievements, what sets them apart is hope. In devising a way to assess hope scientifically, Doctor Snider went beyond the simple notion that hope is merely the sense that everything will turn out all right. That notion is not concrete enough and it blurs two key components of hope.” Doctor Snider said. Having hope means believing you have both the will and the way to accomplish your goals whatever they may be.。
