I roll down the window and take a deep breath of that fresh country air. It smells like hay, dirt, and freedom!When we finally pull into their long driveway, I can barely sit still with excitement. Their big white farmhouse comes into view, with its wraparound porch and swinging wooden bench that creaks when you sit on it. Grandma is always waiting outside with her warm smile and a hug for everyone. "Well hi there, sugar!" she says as I jump out of the car. Her garden is bursting with colorful flowers that buzz with bumblebees.Grandpa comes ambling over from the barn, a piece of straw sticking out from his mouth, with Old Blue the ranch dog trotting happily at his heels. "Glad you young'uns could make it out!" he bellows, wrapping me up in one of his big bear hugs that make me feel so safe and loved. He smells like sweat, horse hair, and sweet tobacco from his pipe.After we get our bags unpacked into the cozy upstairs bedrooms, Grandpa takes me out to the barn to see all the animals. We watch the sun dip below the fields as we pass around platters of fried chicken, thick slices of sweet onions, ripe red tomatoes, and buttermilk biscuits that melt in your mouth. For dessert, we stuff ourselves with Grandma's signature blackberry cobbler, still warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream dribbling down the sides.After supper, we sit in the rocking chairs and porch swing, fanning ourselves as dusk falls. Grandpa tells us stories from his childhood about getting into mischief in those very same fields. We watch meteors burn bright trails across the star-filled night sky, so clear without any city lights. Sometimes we see the distant flickering lights of fireflies winking in the meadow.
