新标准大学英语综合教程4 Unit 1

Unit 11、If you ask me, real life is not all it’s cracked up to be. Twelve years at school and three years at university, teachers banging on about opportunities in the big wide world beyond our sheltered life as students, and what do I find?
Try as I might to stay cheerful, all I ever get is hassle, sometimes with people (especially boys, god, when will they grow up?), but mostly with money. It’s just so ex pensive out here! Everyone wants a slice off you. The Inland Revenue wants to deduct income tax, the bank manager wants repayments on my student loan, the landlord wants the rent, gas, water, electricity and my mobile bills keep coming in, and all that’s before I’ve had anything to eat. And then some bright spark calls me out of the blue, asking if I’m interested in buying a pension. And this rate, I won’t even last till the end of the year, let alone till I’m 60.无论我怎么想保持心情愉快,可麻烦事总是接踵而来:有时是跟人发生矛盾(尤其是跟男孩子,天哪!他们什么时候才能长大?),但通常是为钱发愁。

Unit OneSo far as the relations of love and marriage are concerned, in becoming alive to the finer shades of feeling which arise within these relations, in being able to enter with tact and sympathy into the subtle instinctive propensions and repugnances of the person with whose life his own life is bound up, to make them his own, to direct and govern in harmony with them the arbitrary range of his personal action, and thus to enlarge his spiritual and intellectual life and liberty, than in remaining insensible to these finer shades of feeling and this delicate sympathy, in giving unchecked range, so far as he can, to this mere personal action, in allowing no limits or government to this except such as a mechanical external law imposes, and in thus really narrowing , for the satisfaction of his ordinary self, his spiritual and intellectual life and liberty.——Matthew ArnoldLove does not make the world go around. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.——Franklin P. JonesT eaching objectives:1. talk about some feelings of family life;2. use words、phrases and expressions in brief translation;3. review grammar on The Adverbial Clause 1;4. read material on a similar topic and with a similar degree of difficulty.T eaching focus: the author’s feeling toward his mother’s soup pot before and after the dinnerT eaching difficulties: how the author’s feeling toward his mother’s soup pot changedT eaching process: study of texts A and BBackground Information for This Unit:Generation Gap in Modern SocietyGeneration gap refers to a situation when older and younger people do not understand each other because of their different experiences, opinions, habits and behavior. One cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own life. In traditional societies, children live in the same area as their parents, marry people their parents know and approve of, and often continue the family occupation. In our society, people often move out of the home at an early age, marry or live with people their parents have never met, and choose occupations that are rather different. In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to be better than them. However, these ambitions for their children are another cause of the division between them. Often they discover that they have very little in common. Finally, the speed of change in our society is another cause of it. In a traditional culture, people are valued for their wisdom, but in ore society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of our life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedoms and opportunities of our societies, and in the rapid pace at which society changes.Traditional birthday celebration in W estern countriesIn the west, it is customary to hold a party in celebration of a person’s birthday. The guests will come to the party with birthday presents and say “Happy Birthday” to the birthday person. The guests then watch him or her open the presents and he or she thanks them for the presents they have brought. At the party drinks and food are served. Toward the end of the dinner the lights in the room are turned off, and someone come in from another room with a cake on which are lighted candles, one for each year. At the sight of the cake the guests begin singing “Happy Birthday to Y ou” and the birthday person makes a wish before he or she blows out the candles on the cake. It is said that the wish will come true if all the candles go out in one puff. After that, the cake is cut in slices usually by the birthday person, one piece for each guest. When the party comes to an end, the guests wish the birthday person “Happy Birthday”again and leave.About the Author: Reeve LindberghReeve Lindbergh, the youngest daughter of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, avoided writing a memoir about her family for years. An author of several novels and children’s books, she has published fictionalized accounts of life in the Lindbergh family. It was only after her sister Anne died that Reeve, 53, decided to write a memoir, wanting to preserve her memories of the family she grew up in. The result, Under a Wing, offers a portrait of an American hero who was also a protective father who scrutinized his children with checklists the same way he would carefully examine an airplane’s inner workings. Reeve’s mother, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was also a writer who published her accounts of life in the Lindbergh family. Both mother and daughter have gone through the unfortunate experience of having a baby die. The former was the result of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and the latter from a seizure.Unit DurationLanguage points in this unit:1. take it for granted that: assume that something is true or will happen---Don’t take it for granted that they will support you.---We cannot take it for granted that a computer system will never fail.2. worth: the quality that renders something desirable, useful, or valuable---This research project is of great worth.---He keeps in the safe $3 million worth of diamonds.3.
