We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a false view of life.On the screen, we see what people want to show us. It’s reported that a lot more college students feel ―overwhelming anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2011 to 62% in 2016. Anxiety is now the most common mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.Certainly, we can’t blame it on social media alone. We expect toomuch from our children and a lot of these expectations aren’t reasonable. Their schedules are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don’t have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don’t care how much it costs. As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn’t and can’t promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn’t try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.4. AI is designed to imitate(模仿)the human brain in decision making and learning, so with the computing power to learn tasks in days or even hours, it is possible to create medical AIs that rapidly outperform doctors in certain tasks.Data plays a hugely important role in helping AI systems learn about human medicine. AI systems are trained on large data sets gathered from real-life cases. Providing detailed patient information in quantities is a crucial factor for their success. One of the most important areas for influencing global health is in the field of epidemiology(流行病学)。

Players have to walk around those places in search of Pokemon and try to catch as many as possible, which attracts kids most.Fans of the game say it gets kids off the sofas and encourages them to play in new places and make new friends. She advises kids to discuss with their parents what they are allowed to do before playing. They should also pay careful attention to their surroundings (环境)and avoid talking to strangers. With the help of my dad and uncle, I built my own gym in the garden. It’s basically a beautified room with insulation (隔热层) and electries and a small heater for the winter. We built a corner desk too intending it to be for me to do the paperwork for my small business. However, the desk served its real purpose when I started my writing journey two years ago.I’ve always had stories going through my mind. I could be out jogging and I’d lose myself playing out thoughts in my head like movie scenes. Once seen, they stay in there. I have trouble keeping other information, but when it comes to story ideas, they lock in. I have many full novel ideas in my head waiting to be written. When I was younger, I wasn’t brave enough to write. I didn’t do well in school and I’ve spent most of my life in physical work, so the idea of becoming a writer felt laughable.I now know there isn’t a writer type; writers come in all forms. I still use the gym for its real purpose, but some of the equipment has been replaced by books and a small bed for the time when I want to relax and read. I like to have my desk looking colorful-some might say messy. My love for sport is clear to see, with photos around of my favorite boxers and the football team I follow. On the other hand, having my own writing room is important. Without it I wouldn’t be where I am now on my writing jourmey. It’s far from charming, but it is mine. It’s my happy place.4.Why did the author build his own gym?A.Because of his tight schedule.B.Because of his small business.C.Because of his poor financial condition.D.Because of the encouragement of his family.5.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2?A.He was jogging for more ideas.B.He got on well with his study at school.C.He had the potential to become a writer.D.He was confident about becoming a writer.6.What is the author’s gym mainly used for now?A.Reading and business.B.Storing books and typing.C.Relaxing and entertaining.D.Writing and fitness.7.Which section of a magazine does the passage probably come from?A.Health.B.Life.C.Education.D.Opinion.I’ve spent much of my life dealing with written and spoken words. Now I’m a technologist making use of natural language processing for human good. Given that I work in artificial intelligence (AI), I’m realizing something dangerous happening. Machines are ruining the way we communicate.AI voices are normalized and yet cold, no matter which accent (口音) you set your Siri or Amazon Alexa into. It’s difficult to normalize language to be inoffensive because sometimes we do make people feel uncomfortable or even make them annoyed. Yet this is exactly what we’re asking artificial intelligence to do for us on a billion - person scale. Once these rules are carried out by machines, they’re unavoidable and create much bigger issues. We notice that there is an active desire to only include standardized language in AI -powered tools in an attempt to avoid including potentially harmful or offensive language. And these AI-powered tools are exactly what we use to complete our thoughts almost at any given time. They are everywhere — in our emails, word processors, and web pages. The machines are pushing us into a common tongue, and we accept it as a matter of convenience. But what’s the cost? We’retrading uniqueness and accuracy for convenience. We’re also handing the power of acceptable speech to machines not people. In the real world, people don’t communicate like a Wikipedia (维基百科) article. We use tone (语气), humor and facial expressions. We can tell where people were born based on their accents and wording. Humans are truly unique, and our communication is constantly changing. So we should demand AI systems that promote individuality and uniqueness. We should demand to know how AI is developed and the data used to build it. Because we all deserve this.8.What is the function of paragraph 1?A.To illustrate the function of communication.B.To introduce the impact of AI on language.C.To share the author’s working experience.D.To stress the importance of AI on language processing.9.What does the underlined word “inoffensive” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Hateful B.Valuable C.Harmless D.Beneficial 10.How can we promote AI voice?A.AI voice should be legalized.B.AI voice should be modernized.C.AI voice should be standardized.D.AI voice should be personalized. 11.What’s the author’s tone in the passage?A.Praising.B.Humorous.C.Concerned.D.Objective.Next time you consider striking up a conversation with a stranger in line at the grocery store or while waiting at the laundry, keep in mind that it might be beneficial for your well-being. A recent study by a group of researchers found that there is a link between happiness and a term that the researchers coined called “relational diversity.”Using public data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the World Health Organization, the researchers analyzed data sets and survey responses from people who had shared their daily habits, schedules and interactions. They noticed a clear relationship between relational diversity and overall levels of satisfaction.Hanne Collins, a Harvard Business School doctoral student who co-authored the study, says that relational diversity is composed of two elements: richness and evenness. Richness measuresrelationship categories, or how many kinds of people you interact with in a day. That could be your romantic partner, a family member, a neighbor or a stranger. “The more relationship categories they talk to in a day and the more even their conversations are across those categories, the happier they are. And we find this in a large sample across many countries,” Collins said. Evenness relates to the distribution of conversations among those different relationship categories. Some people may find themselves interacting with colleagues at work more than, say, their family members. “If you have a few conversations with colleagues, a few with friends, a few with a romantic partner or a couple chats with strangers, that’s going to be more even across these categories,” Collins explained.Ultimately, Collins says, the study gives insight to the idea that humans are social creatures at heart. Having a support system is important, but it goes beyond your inner circle. “It’s about this mix. It’s about connecting with people who are close to you, who are maybe less close to you, who connect you with other people, who provide different kinds of support,” she said. “Essentially, the idea is that the more diverse your social portfolio, the happier you are and the higher your well-being.”12.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A.The research method.B.The supporting evidence.C.The analysis of the research data.D.The application of the research findings.13.How does Collins explain the findings in paragraph 3?A.By illustrating concepts.B.By presenting questions.C.By using an expert’s word.D.By referring to another study.14.What does Collins suggest people do in the last paragraph?A.Live a more active life.B.Expand the inner circle.C.Gain as much support as possible.D.Connect with all kinds of people.15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A.Humans, social creatures at heartB.Finding support benefits your well-beingC.The more you interact, the better you will beD.Talking to strangers might make you happierMusic has existed since the beginning of time. Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants first do an “unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could. Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity. But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way. When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.44.The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants ______.A.complete an easy task B.complete a very difficult taskC.take a 12-minute break D.think of various ways to use an object 45.Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best?A.They were not actively working to solve the easy task.B.They daydreamed and it helped them be more creative.C.They were daydreaming while performing the difficult task.D.They skipped the 12-minute break to complete the task again.46.What does the underlined phrase “unconscious thought” in Paragraph 5 mean? A.Your brain wander in a subtle way within your control.B.Your brain knows clearly what you’re thinking and doing.C.Your brain is thinking about a problem outside of your awareness.D.Your brain refuses to receive any information from the outside world.47.The passage mainly wants to tell us that ______.A.brainstorming is important to creative ideasB.daydreaming is a way to improve creativityC.problem-solving skills are important in our livesD.the more we exercise brains, the more ideas we’ll getIn most towns today, you can see teenagers standing over electronic machines with flashing lights, shooting at spaceships from other planets and dropping bombs on strange monsters (恶魔). The machines have names like Space Warrior, Dark Invader and so on. It used to be believed that damage was done only to those strange visitors from outer space, but now it seems that they are striking back. Many teenagers like electronic games so much that they can’t stop playing. They spend hours tightly holding the joystick controls and constantly pressing buttons marked “fire”. They develop pains on their fingers because of the constant pressure. They play and play that the pains have no chance to cure properly. The rapid wrist movement required to guide the spaceship across the screen causes another problem: The muscles of the wrist and arm become so inflamed and swollen (充血红肿) that they press against the bones. This condition is what doctors now call “Space Warrior’s Wrist”.Other strange aches and pains also are likely to affect the elbows and shoulders.Another even more alarming problem is shown by the case of a 17-year-old girl which was recently reported in the British Medical Journal. She had been playing various kinds of electronic games for more than two hours a day. Her father repaired games and machines and she could use the cassettes and systems in his workshop as often as she liked. One day, after playing a game called Dark Invader, she lost consciousness (晕倒) and fell to the floor.Doctors who examined her found she was suffering from an unusual illness caused by lights flashing at a particular frequency (频繁).48.Whom are electronic games found very popular with?A.People living in towns.B.Students studying in high schools. C.Young people.D.Girls working in their father’s workshops.49.What is “Space Warrior’s Wrist” caused by?A.Constantly pressing the buttons.B.Rapidly moving across the screen. C.Tightly holding the joystick controls.D.Inflamed and swollen muscles of the wrist.50.The case of a 17-year-old girl given by the writer shows that the writer ________. A.supports playing electronic games B.feels very sorry for the girl C.disagreed with young people’s playing electronic games D.feels worried about young people’s poor health51.From the passage we can conclude that playing electronic games is ________. A.enjoyable and helpful to the study B.amusing and satisfying C.interesting but harmless to the eyes D.exciting but harmful to the health and studyDuring his life Dr James Naismith worked as a doctor, taught P.E and wrote several books. While he never thought it very important, Dr Naismith is today best known for one thing. He was the inventor of basketball.Dr James Naismith was born in Canada in 1861 and his first job was at a special sports school in the USA.One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. Soon after, the game changed to 5 players on each side, using special “basketballs” through nets.Although Dr Naismith did not live to see basketball become the worldwide game it is today, in 1936, just three years before his death, basketball became an Olympic sport at the Games in Berlin.52.Which of the following things did Dr James Naismith NOT do?A.Teach P.E in school.B.Write some books.C.Work at a hospital.D.Take part in the Olympic Games. 53.In which season did Dr Naismith invent basketball?A.Summer.B.Winter.C.Spring.D.Autumn. 54.Why is December 21 thought to be the birthday of basketball?A.It was on this day that Dr Naismith came up with his idea for basketball.B.It was the day on which Dr Naismith was born.C.It was the day on which Dr Naismith was asked by his boss to invent a new game.D.It was on this day that the first game of basketball was played.55.At the time of Dr Naismith’s death, which of the following was true?A.Basketball was already a worldwide game.B.Basketball was played with 9 players on each side.C.Basketball was an Olympic sport.D.Basketball was still played using footballs.四、短文改错56.此题要求你对一段文章改错。

I had to be extra welcoming and gentle simply to play with other children. Of course, now my coaches wish I weren’t quite so kind on the basketball court.I learned the quality of not being too proud about myself. At 7 feet tall, everyone expects me to be an amazing basketball player. They come expecting to see Dirk Nowitzki, and instead they might see a performance more like Will Ferrell (successfully starred a professional basketball player). I have learned to be modest and to work even harder than my fellows to meet their (and my) expectations.I developed a sense of lightheartedness. When people playfully make fun of my height, I laugh at myself too. On my first day of high school, a girl dropped her books in a busy hallway. I got down to her level and gathered some of her notebooks. As we both stood up, her eyes widened as I kept rising over her. Astonished, she dropped her books again. Embarrassed, we both laughed and picked up the books a second time. All of these lessons have defined me. Looking back, I realize that through years of such experiences, I have become a confident, expressive person. Being a 7-footer is both a blessing and a curse, but in the end, accepting who you are is the first step to happiness.4. Why does the author often draw attention from strangers?A. Built over 2, 200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6, 000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province. In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region’s governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed. The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention of gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 20-metre-wide canals had been carved through the mountain.Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature. Unlike modern dams where the water is blockedwith a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.8. What are the benefits of Dujiangyan according to the first paragraph?A. Reducing flooding and watering farmland.B. Protecting the mountain and reducing the flooding.C. Watering farmland and improving water quality.D. Drying the river and supplying cities with water.9. What was the main cause of the Minjiang River’s flooding?A. Heaving rainsB. Melting snow.C. Low river banks C. Steep mountains.10. How was Li Bing able to break through the rocks of Mount Yulei?A. By using gunpowder.B. By flooding the rocks with water.C. By applying a heating and cooling technique.D. By breaking the rocks with hammers and spades11. Why is Dujiangyan greatly admired by scientists today?A. It preserved much of the natural river life.B. It took very little time to complete the project.C. The building techniques used were very modern.D. It had raised the living standards of the local people.DBill Gates recently predicted that online learning will make place-based colleges less important, and five years from now, students will be able to find the best lectures in the world online. I applaud Mr. Gates. But what’s taking us so long?As early as 1997, MIT(麻省理工)decided to post videos of all university lectures online, for free, for all people. But today, how many students have you met who mastered advanced math or nuclear physics from an MIT online video? Unfortunately, the answer is not many. The problem is the poor quality of online education websites and the experience they provide to students. Those who go to the MIT website and watch courses onlineare surely very smart people, but it’s not like playing a video game such as World of Warcraft. Only the most ardent students, those who are highly motivated, will devote themselves to studying these boring online videos. The real question is why we aren’t spending more to develop better online education platforms. Where is the Avatar of education? Think about this. The market for Hollywood films per year is worth around 30 billion USD. Education in the world is a trillion-dollar-a-year market, hundreds of times bigger than Hollywood movies. Yet the most expensive digital learning system ever built costs well under 100 million dollars.Bill Gates’ prediction is going to happen. There is no doubt abo ut this. But it will only happen when we create high level educational content and experiences that attract and excite more people than it has ever been possible in the real world.12. What has Bill Gates forecast about online learning?A. It will concentrate on physics lectures.B. It will completely replace real universities.C. It will help to make universities more successful.D. It will play an increasingly important role in education.13. What does the underlined word “ardent” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Creative.B. Eager.C. Well-behaved.D. Experienced.14. According to the author, what is stopping people learning online?A. The lack of lectures available online.B. The high cost of admission to the websites.C. The low standard of educational websites.D. The competition with online computer games.15. Why does the author mention Hollywood?A. To show that Hollywood produces many successful movies.B. To prove that education is more profitable than entertainment.C. To argue that movie directors should produce educational content.D. To urge that more money be spent developing educational websites.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
