Sugar Painting
Sugar painting always plays an indispensable role in our childhood which is a traditional Chinese form of folk art, and it used hot, liquid sugar to create two dimensional figures. This delicious snack is popular among many children especially in our Sichuan Province. Selecting a figure is normally determined by spinning the arrow on a wheel, so I always wish I can get a dragon or something that has much sugar every time.
As we all know, Sugar painting has a very long history. Some experts once said that Sugar painting may have originated during the Ming dynasty when small animals made of sugar were created in molds for religious rituals. During the Qing dynasty, this art form then became more and more popular. After that period, techniques was improved a lot, and more different patterns came out. In Sichuan, further developments were made in production, a small ladle, often bronze or copper is used for the mold for creating the sugar painting.
And do you know how to make a sugar painting? Let’s see the steps of making a goldfish figure.
Firstly, produce it with a relatively thick stream of sugar which is being heated in a small pan. Then, place supporting strands of thinner sugar to attach to the outline, and fill in the body of the figure. These supporting strands may be produced to a goldfish figure. Finally, when completed, a thin wooden stick, used to hold the figure, is attached in two or more places with more sugar. while still warm and flexible, the figure is removed from the surface with a tool, and is sold to the waiting customer, or placed on display.
In a word, sugar painting is not only the best memories and flavors for children but also the symbol of Sichuan traditional culture.
