Why would human beings waste a third of their lives sleeping when they could be doing more important things like looking after their families or working? Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge the body, while others think it is important for strengthening newly-formed memories. Now, there is new evidence which suggests that the purpose of sleep may be to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day.

The neurons(神经元)in the human brain consist of fibers called dendrites(树突). These grow as we learn new things and connect the brain's cells to each other at contact points called synapses (突触).The larger the dendrites become and the more cells they connect, the more information we store.

In 2003, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, both biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, suggested a new idea: The things our brains learn each day result in so many synapses that things start to get a little messy. Sleeping allows us to sort through the "noise" and dispense all the unnecessary information, leaving behind only the most important memories.

Recently, the university's research has provided direct evidence to support the theory. The experiment involved analyzing 6,920 synapses in the brain shavings from two groups of mice over a four-year period; one group had been allowed to sleep, while the other had been kept awake and entertained with toys. The researchers discovered that the brain shavings of the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses than those that had been kept awake and entertained.

It was also evident during the study that the brain does not shave every synapse. 20% of neurons remained unchanged; these were most likely well-established memories. Therefore, although We may be sleeping to forget some of what we've learned, the brain "forgets" in a smart way.

Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep. Resting our minds and bodies has also been found to help with other biological functions like strengthening our immunity(免疫). Though scientists may never agree on a single reason, they are all sure of one thing-a good night's rest is essential for our health. So try and spend at least a third of your day sleeping!

38.What will happen when we learn new things?

A.We tend to forget some key information.

B.We develop the ability to recharge the body.

C.The dendrites expand and connect brain's cells.

D.The neurons gather at what are called contact points.

39.Which of the following can replace the underlined word "dispense" in Paragraph 3?

A.Pick up.

B.Get rid of.

C.Bring down.

D.Pull out of.

40.What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

.While taking time out of the workday to run personal errands(事情)has previously been forbidden in the workplace, a recent survey by Captivate Network on "homing from work"-doing personal activities during the workday-shows mixing work and personal time may be the best way to resolve work-life conflict.

Data show 93 percent of busy professionals took breaks to do personal activities during the workday in an effort to improve their work-life balance. More than two out of three of those surveyed admitted surfing the Internet or shopping online while nearly half left their office to run personal errands including going to the bank, medical appointments, picking up a gift or dropping off dry cleaning. The number of employees running personal errands during the day has increased by 31 percent. Perhaps the most shocking thing is that the number of employees who reported having a healthy work-life balance increased by 11 percent despite a 30 percent increase in the number of individuals working more than nine hours a day.

Is this increase in work-life balance satisfaction a consequence of the growth of "homing from work?" Professor Stewart Friedman at the University of Pennsylvania thinks so. He also says allowing employees to openly take breaks during the workday to perform personal tasks can result in higher productivity.

"One of the real destroyers of productivity is the inability to focus on the projects or the tasks at hand," says Friedman. Thinking about family or personal tasks while at work interferes with one's ability to focus on work tasks. Allowing employees the freedom to take care of some of these personal tasks while at work reduces psychological interference and makes them better employees. Friedman argues the majority of work/life issues are a result of employees feeling out of control of their own lives, which leads to decreased productivity and

decreased happiness. "If you give people freedom and flexibility they feel they have more control,' says Friedman.

Friedman argues businesses should focus on results rather than time spent at work. Giving employees a clear sense of what is expected of them and the freedom to figure out when, where and how to achieve these goals will result in a more efficient and productive workforce than one that is told they have to be in the office from 9 to 5 with strict limits on what tasks they can perform at work.

41.What can we learn from the recent survey about "homing from work"?

A.People can work at home rather than in the office.

B.People can enjoy flexibility during the workday.

C.People can replace personal activities with work.

D.People can find the best way to run personal affairs.

42.What breaks worker's concentration at work according to Friedman?

A.Healthy work-life balance.

B.Poor physical health.

C.Concern over personal affairs.

D.Longer working time.

43.What is of great importance to employers according to Friedman?

A.Where employees perform their tasks.

B.How employees complete their tasks.

C.Whether employees stay in the office.

D.What goals employees should achieve.

44.Which of the following best summarizes the whole text?

A.It pays to mix work and personal time.

B.The work-life balance has been achieved.

C.More people run personal errands at work.

D.Help employees concentrate on tasks at hand.

.Aimee Spevak was checking her Facebook news feed. She was delighted to see a notification from her friend Michael Lythcott. Spevak knew he was in Bali now and was glad to take a momentary trp.

And then she read the post: a bright red background with a few words written in white: "Help. In danger. Call police."

Mikey Lythcott, a 39-year-old graphic designer, had landed on the Indonesian island just the day before. Excited for the adventure, the American had rented a scooter on the outskirts of Ubud and driven into town, where he stayed until well past 2 a.m., when he hopped back

on the scooter and headed to his hotel. Lythcott had placed his iPhone in the pouch of the scooter and was using it to navigate. As he climbed a hill past the jungle, he glanced down at the GPS and back up at the road-a curve ahead. Lythcott tapped the brakes to make the turn.

He awoke sometime later to the noise of nearby water. He tried to sit up, but his body wouldn't cooperate. What happened? Where am I? In an empty forest? Then it came to him. Bali! Oh man. I was in a scooter accident, he thought.

The scooter was gone, and with it his cell phone. He couldn't walk with his legs bleeding out. I might die here, he thought.

There, a frightening calm came over him. If he was going to die, let it be like this, in a peaceful place. Let him close his eyes and allow it to take him over.

No, he scolded himself.

How would anyone find him? Then he remembered-he had a second phone, the one with his American SIM card that allowed him to contact the United States. He felt around in his jacket pocket, and there it was! Carefully he pulled it out, powered it on, and turned on international data roaming(漫游), balancing the phone on his chest with his good hand. Battery charge: 42 percent.

He noticed a few of the apps on the phone, including Facebook. An idea struck. He opened a bright red backdrop on his status page and typed away. Less than two minutes later, Aimee Spevak saw the post.

At first, Spevak had no idea what to do. Then she remembered that Facebook has a function that allows you to call your friends. She gave it a try. To her immense surprise and relief, Lythcott picked up. Sometimes the constant connectivity of the online world isn't such a bad thing.

"Aimee," he said, "I'm in the woods. I don't know where I am. I don't know what's happening."

"OK," Spevak said. "Can you send me your location?"

"Yes."

"I'm going to call somebody, and we'll get you out of there."

After they hung up, Lythcott sent her his GPS coordinates(坐标)on a map using Facebook's "pin drop" function. Spevak posted a screenshot of the pin drop to the Facebook comment thread, hoping Lythcott's vast circle of friends from around the globe would work. She watched nervously as every few seconds another friend jumped into the conversation. "Mikey!! ARE YOU OKAY???" "Mikey, what police do we call???".

Ricardo Mendes, wanting Lythcott to activate Apple's Emergency SOS call, wrote, "PRESS THE OFF BUTTON OF YOUR IPHONE 5 TIMES QUICKLY."

Kaitlin Haggard found all the local police numbers by district and shared them.

Leah Schlossman aired her frustration: "I can't get through to any of these numbers and Michael's line is busy!"

Josh Hofer, Lythcott's old friend from college, was then sitting at his office computer in North Carolina. Finding the location was frustratingly vague, he soon took a HR screenshot and sent it to the U.S. Consulate in Indonesia.

In Island Surabaya, Indonesia, Christine Getzler-Vaughan, a public affairs officer at the U.S. Consulate General, was monitoring the night-duty emergency phone when it began to ring. "My friend posted on Facebook that he's hurt and needs help," the caller said.

At 5:29 a.m., less than an hour after his Facebook SOS, she managed to contact Lythcott.

Lythcott was drifting in and out of consciousness when he heard the sound of brush rustling. Bali has snakes, and he wasn't exactly in a condition to defend himself. He waited anxiously as whatever it was approached. Soon the sound turned into a murmur, then into voices. A search party!

At 8:14 a.m.-nearly four hours after Mikey Lythcott posted his plea for help on Facebook-Josh Hofer, who had been in constant touch with the hospital in Ubud, posted: "UPDATE-HE IS OKAY AND IN THE HOSPITAL!"

A miracle? Maybe.

.I have some gray hairs. Do l dare to count them?Just the fact that I have enough to count scares me,and turns getting old into a reality. I'm certainly getting older. We all are. But why does it have to happen so quickly?

We just celebrated my birthday. I say "celebrated" because we had cake and ice cream. For my kids, any excuse for ice cream and cake is a celebration. I'm not sure if to me it was a thing to celebrate, though. I like the special attention that birthday bring, but I don't wait for them 364 days of the year like my children do. For them, another number means more privileges and more things that they get to do. For an adult, another number means fewer things. that you can do,like "I can't run as fast as I used to…etc. "

I went with my children to the old-age home near my apartment building. We walked inside the door. The contrast between my preschoolers full of energy and the old women siting in the wheelchair by the door made me lost in thought. Not so long ago,I was a bouncing preschool like my children. Not so long ago, there women were the mothers of small children. Fifty years ago, they were me,and in fifty years,I could be them,The visit, like my birthday, served as a reality check. "Life is so short and it goes by so quickly. Enjoy the moment that you are in,because you will never get it back,"I told myself.

This is also what I want to leave behind to my children. I decide to try to start just by not complaining. In any difficult situation,I will try to find the good things about it,no matter how small the good things might be.
