They borrow Chinese culture, like Hua Mulan and Kung Fu Panda.They make use of other country’s history to earn huge amount of money. They make fun of other nation’s culture.In another word, the success of American movies points us to the right direction---We need to have our Chinese movies labeled with China, come down to ordinary people’s daily life, and finally come to every part of the whole world.Key words individualism, heroism, science and technology, freedom, innovation, slavery, influenceI. Individualism and heroismAmerican people have a strong sense of self-centered, they believe in individualism and they regard the pursuit of individual happiness as a social consensus. They call for people struggle by themselves, only in this way, can they achieve their goals and get respect from other people. These are all contained in American movies, such as Forrest Gun, he is a mentally disabled man, but he finds his position and makes a great success finally, even surpass ordinary people’s achievement. If Forrest Gun is rather like an unreachable dream, then The Shawshank Redemption can be a kind of extraordinary life. Life is always simpler than dream, but it is also crueler than dream. So whenever we see Andy suffers from the discomfort of poison, we get angry for his unfair treat, but no one can change his life even himself. He is limited by the high wall, by the awful law, by institutionalization. But nothing can free his minds. He never give up hope for life, through constant effort, he makes himself managed to escape from the jail. Life without hope will be doom and gutless, or even meaningless. It is because Andy never give up the hope of his future life, after 19 years miserable as well as painful life, he gets his freedom back in the end. Another famous film throughout American movie history is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,it is also a movie about freedom, but what makes it different from other movies is---it dare to unveil the ugly face of the society---suppress human nature and limit their own freedom. Maybe this is why I appreciate American movies, for it dares to expose the dark side and criticize it by a rather humorous way. So the audiences not only gain happiness while seeing movie, but also rethink what the movie intend to convey. In a word, American movies are though-provoking.III. Spirit of innovationPut Americans’ admiration of liberty aside, the key of American culture I think is the spirit of innovation. Nowadays, we can say that no country in the world can reach the height of American scientific and technological level in films, for inconsiderable 3D films are produced in America every year. I perceive that there is no one but likes Harry potter, it has been translated into hundreds of Languages and became the bestselling book over that time even until now. It is universally known that this book is written by a British author, but America has made it displayed to the whole world. Someone may say that it is because the author that make this book so popular, while I suppose that without making into films, Harry Potter can’t gain popularity, for thefilms do apply advanced technology to show some scenes which we can’t see in reality. In American movies, we can use scientific technology to change the genetic structure of human beings, we can fly to other planet to build a new home, we can achieve everything as long as we want. American movies can always realize our dream and give us a dream-like visual spectacle. For instance, in Star Wars, it set up a splendid space scene with many special effects, which beyond the ordinary scientific technology. There is no doubt that American movies become popular soon all over the world. That is the power of innovation. Because we cannot see such movies made by our own nation, we buy their tickets, and make contribution to American movie income.IV. Slavery culture in moviesAlthough America is a young nation, she does have its own history. A key word of American history is slavery. Negro slaves exist extensively in the western country, so does America. In its films, we can also take a glimpse of African American’s life in the past years. My favorite one is Gone with the Wind, slavery culture is not the theme of this films but the background. Many African Americans criticized the stereotypical black characterizations, such as the "shiftless and dull-witted Pork", the "indolent and thoroughly irresponsible Prissy", Big Sam's "radiant acceptance of slavery", and Mammy with her "constant haranguing and doting on every wish of Scarlett". I think Gone with the Wind tell the truth of slavery history in the southerners’ eyes which denied by African Americans. I’ll cite the words of Scarlett’s mother:“Always remember, dear, you are responsible for the moral as well as the physical welfares of the darkies God entrusted you to your care.”This paragraph not only expresses the author’s prejudice towards the Blacks, but also the Whites’. She regards them as inferior people to the Whites. That’s the truth of White people’s attitudes towards the Blacks under that social background and also part of American culture shown in the films. What’s more, nowadays people have acknowledged the evil nature of slavery, and we are respectful for those African Americans who fought for equality in American history.V. InfluenceTo say American movies, we cannot leave Hollywood behind. Hollywood is American “movie maker”, it becomes the symbol of American movies and even influence international movie industries. As Hollywood doesn’t have stories of their own, they often bring in culture of other countries, here are some strong evidences:Mulan, a retelling of the old Chinese folk tale is about the story of a young Chinese woman called up into the army to fight instead of his lame father, is very much displayed in an American style; Troy, about a war happened in Greece history, Americans’ heroism and individualism are obviously seen in this movie. Hollywood now has become the world's film capital. More and more Chinese movie makers are cooperated with Hollywood and actors are inclined to step up to the stage of Hollywood, which means the highest honor in filmmaking area.Conclusion American movies are the nation’s important in strument of cultural expression. It contains American spirits of individualism, heroism, liberty. They spread their particular cultural values to the whole world, and at the same time influence people’s idea of personal values. Among all the movie makers in the world, America is more courageous, more creative, more self-confident. As a nation of people with different races, American culture is inclusive, which makes the diversity of its movies. No matter making use of other countries’ history or criticizing their own social background, America can always manage to find their position in the film industries, that is, to lead the world’s fashion and put those advanced elements into American movies.
